Save the neglected Obama school in Kenya!
Conservative bloggers aren’t waiting for The One Who Is The Change He Seeks. No, they’re doing it for themselves.
Doing what, you ask?
Doing the job Barack Obama wasn’t willing to do: Helping out a little school in Kenya that bears Obama’s name and which he promised to assist.
Shocker: It was an empty promise. The school remains in dire need of help, as It’s Vintage, Duh pointed out. Via the Evening Standard last week:
[Obama] told the assembled press, local politicians (who included current Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga), and students: “Hopefully I can provide some assistance in the future to this school and all that it can be.” He then turned to the school’s principal, Yuanita Obiero, and assured her and her teachers: “I know you are working very hard and struggling to bring up this school, but I have said I will assist the school and I will do so.”
…Seven months ago I travelled to Iowa to cover the start of the US primaries and was impressed by Obama’s charisma and integrity as he kicked off a thrilling battle with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Now, with only John McCain standing in the way of him making history as America’s first black President, and amid the fanfare over his current world tour, nowhere is this possibility more eagerly awaited than in Kogelo, the place where his father and grandfather are buried. Yet there is disappointment and hurt here, too. Granting us access to the school and its records, Principal Obiero, 48, tells us: “Senator Obama has not honoured the promises he gave me when we met in 2006 and in his earlier letter to the school. He has not given us even one shilling. But we still have hope.”
The letter Obiero refers to – dated 22 June 2005, signed by Obama and addressed to her – was written after his election to the US Senate in 2004 and hangs, framed, on the wall of her spartan office alongside photographs of Obama’s visit to their school. It says: “I am honoured that you have decided to rename the Kogelo School in my name.
The land that the school is built on was donated by my grandparents and I am proud to carry on the tradition of supporting the school.”
Obiero and her board of governors followed up his letter offering ” support” with a bald, formal request for funds in the form of a nine-page proposal, a copy of which has been provided to the Evening Standard, laying out their ambitions for the school. In it they ask for 8.2 million Kenyan shillings (approximately £65,000) to upgrade the school. The money would be used, they say, to bring water to the school by sinking a borehole and building a water tank, erect a perimeter fence, complete the science laboratory and add muchneeded new classrooms, additional latrines, and a school dining hall.
Obiero recalls: “When the US Ambassador William Bellamy came to visit the school for the official renaming ceremony in February 2006, we gave him two copies of the proposal, one for the Embassy and one to give to Senator Obama. But we have not heard anything from either of them since.”
Kenyan-American milblogger Juliette Ochieng at Baldilocks is setting up a non-profit called “Save Senator Obama Kogelo School, Inc” to effect the change the village had hoped Obama would deliver.
Wrote Juliette:
Since I am of the same tribe as Obama, I think that it should fall to me to assist in filling in this gap. I’d like to start a fund to help this village school—and others, if possible.
Off the top of my head, the following information needs to be known:
1. an itemized list of the things which the village schools in Kenya require and that school in particular
2. supporting items and services for the above list
3. the logistics
4. the oversight plan of the money and the tasks
5. maintenance and upkeep requiredIn addition, there’s an over-arching concern about the infrastructure in the country: how much modern technology can the village handle?
I’m a fund-raising virgin, however, so as soon as I get some more information, we’ll get this ball rolling.
BTW, this will be a non-partisan endeavor. I’ve tweaked Obama as much as I’m going to on this topic. I’ll keep thumping him about other stuff but not about this. Heck, he can help–even get out in front of this parade as he is wont to do.
You can donate here.
And no, Michelle O, this conversation doesn’t help your kids.
But it will help one Kenyan village’s kids.
And you and Barack are all about saving the children, right?

Count this typical white person in.
Now that I’ve made a contribution, I’m struck by the thought that with an Obama presidency, many fewer contributions will be voluntarily made like this. I won’t feel much like paying the Global Poverty Tax and kicking in even more on my own.
This is not the source of funding Senator Obama thought he knew. I’ll throw them a couple of bucks.
Nor will they. As I’ve said before, Obama’s pretty words – and promises – are made of marshmallow fluff: sugar and air and no substance. It’s just a shame those kids had to learn this lesson.
This will be more fun to follow up on than an Edwards love child…
When I was 21 (it was a very good year…but I digress), I owned my first new car, got into an accident on a snowy highway, collided with an elderly driver for some scrapes and dings to his leased car. I asked if we could keep from going through our insurance so my rates wouldn’t go up. He actually got a lower quote for me from another shop than his dealer gave him. I was a day late calling him back to arrange payment and he indicted me by saying, “I see you’re not a man of your word.” I was horrified at the insinuation, but explained the delay, then complied with my obligation. I can’t imagine making such a promise as this to a poor village school that bears your name then just dropping the (basket)ball.
And he wants us to elect him on his judgment??
Obama never ever meant to do anything himself. His idea of doing something for this school undoubtedly meant using our money to do it.
The empty suit has struck again. It just goes to show he will promise anyone, anything, even if they can’t vote for him, just to make himself look like he cares.
I’d rather have someone tell me they won’t help me than give the false promise that they will. Then at least I know who I can not count on.
I’m pretty sure that when Obama said “I will assist the school” what he meant was “When I come into my full power and become POTUS, I’ll send you a few billion of the US taxpayers dollars”. He’s generous like that.

As the old adage goes, a conservative will give you the shirt off his back while a liberal will give you the shirt off someone elses back.
gee whiz! Odumbo doing nothing. what a shocker! If he would have been paying attention to
someall the bills he didn’t vote on he probably could have snuck in an earmark or two for the school. what a tool.Imagine, if you will, what would happen if Senator McCain had pulled a stunt such as this.
The man, er, um, I mean “The One” loses credibility with every passing day.
It takes a blogger to fulfill Obama’s promise.
What a hack.
Obama didn’t help HIS kids.
If they still have hope, then all Obama has to do is pony up the change.
/sarcasm off
As for Senator McCain, he puts his money where his mouth is…think adoption.
Differences are vast. Again.
And the left/dems/moron.org called a general “betrayus’ and this crack smoker can’t keep a promise made years ago? even if out of his own pocket the items on that list he and his icky wife could afford.
This guy makes me puke.
Yet another broken promise by a lefty. I am so shocked! I think the McCain campaign should step in an give to the school…. that would be great!
Does Oprah know this?…..
That appears to be a beer in Senator Kerry’s hand, in the picture on the left. Even if it’s Grape Nehi, it shows that he didn’t just walk over for a brief picture.
Worse: it appears as if those underage women are drinking alcohol in public. With a United States Senator.
Evidently Kerry is getting ready to assume the mantle of Senior Senator from Massachusetts. It appears as if “debauchery” is part of the job.
Another example of Obama being full of hot air and no substance. He only wants to spend your tax dollars, not his own money as he promised. If his kids were enrolled there, he would have given the help long ago. I’m sure he is counting on his Global Poverty Tax to help them out and then he can take full credit.
Rob,
Methinks you have the wrong thread.
Now watch for the Big “O” to sweep in and take credit for all your generosity.
Or better yet, the media will do a puff piece on the school and Big 0’s promise, but conveniently leave out where the money actually came from.
Wait and see…
“Hope” by itself means nothing. Kind of like Obama’s entire campaign. How thoroughly disappointed they must be with this man. I suppose there’s nothing politically for him to gain from fulfilling this promise, so he ignores it.
I thought Obama would have us to believe his family lived in poverty? Remember, “I was raised by a single mom on food stamps…”
DBNinKY
I agree …
I see a photoshop here …
How about BO as the Marshmallow man from “Ghostbusters” …
Any takers?
Just words, just speeches–empty promises. Typical liberal liar.
See? That is what I was thinking, MerryMavin, as I read…
I doubt that even his own children’s well-being would motivate him to crack open his own wallet.
I agree with MerryMaven that…
and then take full credit, as someone else pointed out, followed by the media’s story which will conveniently leave out the true source of the $$$, whether it’s the unwitting taxpayer or the generosity of those who contribute voluntarily.
Typical liberal playbook.
“Since I am of the same tribe as Obama”
Um, what tribe would Obama be from? He was born and raised in the USA by his white grandparents. So what tribe is that? Do we have tribes here?
Ugh, sick of this crap.
And sorry, I wouldn’t dare make a donation to any organization named after Barack Obama. It never should have been named after him in the first place. They named a school after a man they didn’t even know or know anything about. They just jumped on the fact that he’s half-Nigerian. I have little respect for people who make heroes of people over the most shallow reasons. And now they admit Obama has done NOTHING for the school. But they are keeping the name, right????
I loved Obama’s quote: “Hopefully I can provide some assistance in the future to this school and all that it can be.”
Gosh, the man’s so full of hope these days, isn’t he?
Unfortunately the officials at the Kenyan school probably didn’t have an opportunity to speak with the poor residents in Chicago’s Englewood and Grove Parc neighborhoods, and find out how Obama’s other promises of assistance have turned out.
Of course this is reminiscent of the aftermath of Katrina, when liberal bloggers were gleefully dancing on the graves of the New Orleans dead, reveling in wet dreams about blaming everything on Bush, while conservative bloggers were raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid for the victims. More than anything else, this illustrates the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives.
It is disappointing to see conservatives embracing Obama’s and Oprah’s We Are The World attitude. Why not help a private school here in the United States?
If the goal here is to make Obama look foolish by tweaking him, okay, but if it is just a demonstration of throwing money into another Black Hole, fuggid about it!
Help out your OWN tribe… AMERICA!
When dealing with local nationals, the very first rule is to promise nothing. At best, agree to see what you can do, or forward the request to someone that can do something. Every Soldier on the streets of Iraq knows this. But Odummy doesn’t. What a great way to lose credibility, whether nationally or individually. Personally, I don’t care which way he does, as long as he continues to discredit himself.
Once again MM is focusing on the trivial, rumors, inuendo. She should be putting her efforts to glorifying the Obama, not tearing him down. After all he has a positive, bright vision for the future and a better life for the whole world. She should be working to help create this brave new world. Why would anybody even care about right-wing slurs like this?
/sarc off
I would send money to Obama’s school, but I’m already sending all I can to his new preacher.
Where is Oprah? Really these kids in Kenya, and the kids in Monrovia,Liberia, are going to school in a burned out Church. Oprah will help children in South Africa, well girl children. What is wrong with these other African Countrys with needs? Liberia is trying to get back on it’s feet after Robert Taylor. Zimbabwea is in deep turmoil right now because of Mugabe. All I hear in the news media is Obama’s soo kool, NO he’s not he is kind of plastic. Oprah’s choice for President. African Countrys are not counting on Obama “helping” are they? The U.S. President, that has done the most for Africans is George W Bush.
sent a small donation, i have 3 kids so school is something i know needs payed for.
every year my wife and i send extra stuff with our kids at the first of the year like extra crayons and tissues and whatnot for those that dont have it to give, it feels good and doesnt cost alot.
Warden,
I can’t believe you ever found that set of videos, let alone sat through them long enough to find out where to send him the money!!! That stuff is hilarious in short doses, especially when you read the comments.
I watched about 30 seconds before giving up. I wonder how long until he gets thrown under the bus?
If this was an unnamed school, I’d chip in a couple of bucks, but I’m not giving to anything named after Barack HUSSIEN Obama, and then have him take the credit as others have pointed out.
When oh when will the dingbat people of this nation wake up to the fact that this moron is nothing but a blowhard?
Cav, you lasted 26 seconds longer the I.
We have several “tribes” here in the good old USA. Cherokee, Apache, and Sioux, are just a few.
Can’t wait for B.O. be a Native-American, too.
It’s possible he meant when he is president and can use tax money to build an edifice worthy of the name Obama.
Oh, gee, Obummer broke his promise to the school. B.I.G. S.H.O.C.K.E.R!
I’m sure he just couldn’t find the cash to help out in between those expensive piano lessons, arugula salads, and fundraising jaunts to encourage more people to feel “less bitter.”
Then again, I guess he’s just being a typical politician. Perhaps, Oprah can help him out?
Maybe Luol Deng, with his 80 million dollar contract can help.
I agree. Remember the ice skater Nancy Kerrigan? I thought that was the most colossal waste of a hero(ine)’s mantel. But now this takes the cake!
Empty suit, empty promises.
Thank you Michelle (Malkin).
This is a very good thing.
If this becomes national news, the headline will be “Right wing bloggers try to embarrass Obama” or some other such spin.
You are right on the mark! Here is a story from the Chicago Tribune that shows that he didn’t consider charities (here or elsewhere) to be worthy of his riches (how much was that house he bought? $1.5 million?) until it would be useful to him:

Liberals are just full of empty promises, and the ones they do keep are usually make to advantage them and paid for by us.
shooter,
Without a doubt it is. It gets better and better which each passing day. Additionally, despite the MSM blackout of Obama’s shortcomings, missteps and outright flip-flops he isn’t gaining any traction from his world tour. Tis’ very good, indeed.
Be ready for Obamabi to take credit for anything that is done because, he elevated the profile of the school just by going there. Liberals have a habit of taking credit for things that they opposed or had nothing to do with.
madamevengier #27:
“Since I am of the same tribe as Obama”
Juliette here. That’s the Luo tribe of Kenya, the country in question.
That doesn’t change his ethnic heritage on the other side. I was born and raised here also by my American family, not white, FYI.
American.
Yes. I’m also of the USAF tribe.
I’m not sure of what you’re sick of. I’m not allow to mention my ethnic/other groups?
The school is named after him. I can’t change that.
Thank you very much!
Keep up the good work baldilocks.
Those of you who have donated to this are better people than me.
I’m having trouble with this one. I’ll deal with my own problems on this but was wondering why Oprah hasn’t come in to save the day..?
If this all comes together, I’ll see if I can arrange to go there myself, since I spend some time next door in Uganda.
The political irony here is just oozing, but never lose sight of the real goal here; to get water to a bunch of kids that need it.
As for renaming the school, I wouldn’t suggest that; he is their most famous relative. However, adding some slogans under that name might be appropriate:
“Actons speak louder that words”
“Honor your commitments, so you yourself will be honored.”, etc.
So he’s throwing the whole school under the bus this time? I believe the problem here is that Tony Resko is in jail so Obama can’t hire him with tax payer money to go to Africa and dig a well. In 2009, after Resko is pardoned, he will go to Africa to fill Obama’s promise.
Obama is a liar. It’s that plain and simple.
What a Showboat! All talk, no substance. This empty suit has got to to be taken to task…
Howbout’ if McCain takes a quick trip to the school in Kenya for a photo op, bringing shool supplies, some IMACS, and some fundage. Would all the news anchors come along to report the event of the Prine Minister and the Senator meeting in front of the school as they change it’s name to the McCain School?
“It would have been for the children…. If I had given it. Now it is for MY children. Oh, wait, we don’t give them Christmas, or Birthday presents.”
“I was for that school before I was against it.”
Great (mis)quotes from presidential candidates.
B Hussien O didn’t have the time to visit the wounded troops at Landasahl (sp)while he was busy “working out” in Germany…
The Iraqi Interior Minister had time to visit the wounded troops at Walter Reed:

Command SERGEANT Major..
Sorry-up late last night…
Another example of not finishing what he starts. He’s head of a committee which doesn’t have meetings, voted present numerous times and now doesn’t have to vote because he’s too busy giving speeches in europe. He hasn’t been officially nominated or elected and has moved on to President of the world. What better way to fix the world than to be the global leader.
I agree with Rob. I would prefer to send my dollars to a private local school of which I know can produce results, than to some school in Africa where I have no way of knowing if it is really going to be used in the way I hope it would. We send millions of dollars in aid to foreign countries whether we want to or not, and I’d rather spend the money here – by my own choosing.
However, you folks who contributed are generous, and are to be commended.
Seems to me the MSM has been taking a page out of Baghdad Bob’s playbook, only reporting what the Barakadoodledoo wants them too.
Shame on the so-called journalists. It is like living in the 60’s and 70’s again. Bias and or Lies.
The apocalypse must be upon us. Atheling, you make a very rational and totally defensible point in your last post. I’d have to do a bunch of diligence (as we always do) prior to making such a donation, so I agree with you for the most part. However, do you really want to “agree” with Rob? I think he might be coming from a different place than you are on this subject if you know what I mean…read his comment again.
Michelle, have you been drinking the McSwish Kool-Aid.
Yes dakine, we must agree with your point of view, and you better make sure you keep an eye on atheling. I don’t think he should be allowed to have an opinion without getting your okay first… lol
Thanks for the link Michelle (Vintage being a co-blogger for those confused), and thanks for supporting Juliette’s efforts to help this school.
There’s no reason that we can’t help them, and these are basic needs, the key things this school needs are to have a well drilled and tapped, latrines, additional classrooms, a perimeter fence and a lunchroom.
These are not lavish things, they’re basic necessities. I can understand and respect donating to schools here in the US and I applaud you for doing that if you choose to do that, but there’s no reason this school can’t be helped too.
As for the Kenyans naming the school after Obama, if you’re some very poor village in Kenya, and you have a Senator from the most powerful nation in history who has close family ties to the school and village promising to give you money to fund your school, you’re probably going to suck up to him as best you can, right? So the fact that the school is named Senator Obama Secondary isn’t surprising, and shouldn’t deter anyone. I don’t know why people are losing their heads over the fact that they named it that…
Amazing. Conservatives helping kids who liberals broke their promise too. Very nice. You all have heart.
I think that’s the problem, it’s just a promise.
dakine,
I agree that he’s coming from another place, but that the destination is the same.
One just happens to be driving a clown car
I believe that taking care of the needs we have at home should trump those of outside interests. That’s not to say we shouldnt send aid to others. but with our struggling schools here in the states, i think that most of the funds we’d donate should go there.
Not losing my head, just unimpressed.
They should however rename the school – how does
Barakadoodledoo Hot Air School
sound to you?
Fool them once Shame On Him, fool them twice, Shame On Them.
Point taken Rob…nobody really has to answer to anyone else on this site (other than the moderators). Let me ask you point blank though, are you a bigot?
I hear ya abstract…we’re on the same page.
One which Obama broke. This is a poor village, they’re going to cling to any hope of basic assistance they can, even a false promise from a sleazy US politician. This isn’t even a lot of money, the Kenyan school is only going to need about $130,000 for all the upgrades.
There’s no reason Obama couldn’t have gotten them that money already. He could have probably done a one evening charity event for a bunch of his rich, self-important friends and easily put together the charitable funds to do this, if not more.
As for renaming the school? I say name it the Juliette Ochieng Kogelo Secondary School.
Promise U.
For those that are concerned about ‘due diligence’ on the money’s use: I’ve been doing this stuff personally for about 5 years now and have familiarity on what it takes to get this stuff done right. This usually involves someone you trust on the ground, even if it’s yourself (my nickel, if I go). It also involves getting locals to actually make the purchases; if you don’t, one gets what is called ‘mzungu pricing’- inflated rates for the rich white people. Several times, I’ve hidden in the back of the truck to keep the prices down.
I’ll be working with baldilocks on the details to get the bang for the buck everone expects.
Clarification: called ‘Mzungu pricing’ in Lugandan, the Ugandan language; I’m sure Swahili has an equivelent.
Yes, by all means send MONEY to the administrators of this poor African school. It will be put to good use…wink, wink, nudge, nudge!
Yes, I am sceptical, and cynical. Two things I know about sending money to Africa…either the money gets “misappropriated” or it is received as part of a scam/scheme. I wouldn’t touch this “opportunity” with a ten foot pole!!
Probably because the kids that go to the school will think that Obama is some sort of great man and idolize him. You don’t think they’ll ever hear how he failed to keep his promise to assist the school or that the people who opposed him actually did, do you?
I have to agree with keeping the donations in the U.S. I’ve heard too many people complain about us being the world’s police and interfering in other countries’ business, yet they never have any problem accepting our cash.
DPU said,
Yes, I agree with you. I should have said it was just an EMPTY promise, with nothing to back it up.
It makes it that much more heinous that these children are so desperately impoverished that they
and that he would then so callously ignore their pleas to him to fulfill the promise he made over 2 years ago.
Juliette,
Look, I applaud what you’re doing. I hope they wise up and re-name the school in your honor. Or some kind of name that signifies that it was the American people who made the school possible. I would HAPPILY contribute if the school didn’t have Obama’s name on it. But I and many others won’t give to a school that bears Obama’s name.
No, I don’t have a problem with you mentioning other racies/ethnicities. I’m all for it. My point was about people pandering to Obama and his Nigerian heritage. He’s American. He should receive honors based on accomplishments in this country, not based on his bloodline from somewhere else.
The crap that I was referring to being sick of is the shallow hero-worship given to Barack Obama and the constant pandering to his being half-Nigerian.
I will say it again, the school officials named the school after a man they knew NOTHING about. And that man failed them. They made an unwise decision and they did it not becuase they truly felt that Obama warranted having a school named after him, but becuase they wanted his financial support. This is the oldest trick in the book. Naming something after someone in order to get their support. I’m all for that, too. It is certainly a valid way to get much-needed support for something very good–provided the person they are naming the institution/organization after truly deserves it. But I question naming something after someone who has done NOTHING to deserve it. And who proved, in the end, that he doesn’t deserve it.
racies = races. LOL.
Meanwhile Zimbabwae is in dire distress.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1558771/Mugabe-has-lots-of-food-at-local-shop.html
RACIST and BIGOT are terms of liberal methodology: the attempt to limit or stifle inconvenient or dissenting viewpoints through the use of a negatively charged, politically correct word. This is the same verbal trick used successfully for years by that champion race baiter and hypocrite, Jesse Jackson.
Much as dogs are conditioned to cower at the word NO, the white sheeple of America have been programmed by the media and our educational system to cower in fear as soon as they hear those liberal labels. Don Imus is an example of such foolishness. When Imus was called one of those liberal terms he cringed and crawled to Al Shapton begging to be forgiven, when what he should have done was to tell Sharpton to pound sand.
How and why I think, react or respond as I do is based on experience, education, observation and the changing environment I perceive about me. My thoughts, feelings and resulting viewpoints are fluid; the way I feel today may be modified or mollified by this time tomorrow. Nonetheless, whatever my viewpoints, they are mine not to be conveniently pigeonholed or labeled by anyone.
“I yam what I yam and that’s all that I yam.” –Popeye
Of course, Laree; Zimbabwe’s needs are far greater. Problem is, unlike Kenya, there is no way to get anything supervised to make sure 100% doesn’t slide into the pockets of thugs.
I can go into Uganda or even Kenya unarmed to make sure things get done; I wouldn’t visit Zimbabwe to do charity work without a Marine brigade wrapped around me.
As for the need at home; there is and I give at home as well. Still, the needs here are frankly a joke in relation to what I myself have seen in Africa, without even looking hard. And I’ll tell you another thing; there is a great deal more personal appreciation there than here. And it goes a LOT farther.
