Rock the House: What should Republicans do now? It’s on…Culberson: Every day on the House floor this week
Scroll down for updates…10:00am Eastern Monday 8/4…GOP Rep. John Culberson is Qikking the Revolt, Pt II now…go here…Mike Pence right now: “What you are about to witness is the beginning of a sustained effort to demand that Speaker Pelosi bring Congress back to Washington DC and give us an up and down vote on an energy bill that includes more access to American oil”…Culberson: “House conservatives will be on the floor every day this week”…Boehner live blog here….
Pelosi digs in: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday maintained a hard-line stance against offshore drilling and said GOP efforts on the floor to push her toward a vote was [a] “war dance of the hand maidens of the oil companies.”
***
“Hit hard, hit fast, hit often.”
That was the advice Marine hero Chesty Puller gave his men.
That’s the advice congressional Republicans should follow.
On Friday, GOP members led a revolt on the floor that rocked the House, energized the conservative base, humiliated the feckless Democrat majority, and brought visiting tourists to their feet cheering in the gallery. (Oh, and not coincidentally on Friday afternoon, Barack Obama followed John McCain and flip-flopped on offshore drilling. If you lead, conservatives, the flip-floppers will follow.)
While Do-Nothing Nancy Pelosi jetted off on her pathetically-performing “Know Your Power” book tour and Democrats adjourned for a five-week recess, scores of Republican congressional representatives stayed on Capitol Hill–or rushed back in shorts with suitcases still in hand — to press for votes on energy independence and drilling. Though Pelosi turned the lights out on the House floor, Republicans got their message out–via Twitter, Qik, the blogosphere, talk radio, and grumbly MSM types who derided the upstart effort as “bizarre.”
Leave it to Beltway snob journalists to call House Republicans who refuse to take vacations while the public’s business goes unfinished “bizarre.”
One of my favorite moments from Friday’s revolt:
Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) just pretended to be a Democrat. He stood on the other side of the chamber and listed all of the GOP bills that the Dems killed.
He then said, “I am a Democrat, and here is my energy plan” and he held up a picture of an old
VW Bug(correction: readers are telling me it’s an Isetta) with a sail attached to it. He paraded around the House floor with the sign while the crowd cheered.
The sign via Jim Hoft:

Dead on.
So, now what?
House Republicans hit hard and hit fast on Friday. Come Monday, they need to hit again and hit often during the Democrats’ vacation.
Mark Tapscott at the Examiner thinks Friday was a missed opportunity.
But the fight has only just begun.
The House GOP’s 8/1 revolt wasn’t merely good political theater. It was good politics. Politics on offense. Politics the grass-roots can get behind. Energized politics on energy that will galvanize public opinion in the otherwise lazy, dog days of August.
Seems to me House Republicans should be holding a public event every day in Washington from now until the end of the Democrats’ vacation to call attention to Nancy’s anti-drilling intransigence and her refusal to hold votes on the issue. Work in shifts. Whatever it takes. But every House Republican should clock in at some point during the Democrats’ vacation and take a stand for energy independence now, not later.
Can’t speak on the House floor? Hold a sit-in on the Capitol steps. Or at a local gas station. Bring those kerosene lamps or Bic lighters. Pass out postcards with Rep. Devin Nunes’ satirical sign.
Bring some tire pumps, while you’re at it, and mock the Obama tire-inflation-as-planet saving energy plan:

And make sure to videotape it all.
House GOP members should also be spreading the word to their local newspapers and local talk show hosts in their congressional districts to assail Nancy’s gag order and hammer the “Drill now” theme home.
And where’s the RNC? How about sending someone in a chicken costume to trail Nancy Pelosi during her hiatus? As the House Republicans asked repeatedly on Friday: What’s she so afraid of?
On 8/1, the House GOP brought it on.
Keep it going, turn it up, and make sure the American public sees you at work on proactive energy proposals to bring down the Pelosi Premium during the Democrats’ vacation.
***
Speaking of the absent Speaker of the House, here’s her book tour schedule during the Democrats’ vacation. The “Impeach Bush” crowd is dogging her on the book publicity trail. Wouldn’t it be good to see protesters at these events pressing her on issues people really care about?
Like Nan says: Know your power. Hit hard, hit fast, hit often.

I hope all of us who support this movement are calling those GOP reps to applaud their actions.
If they don’t hear from us, they won’t know what we want.
Well they certainly won’t get started if all we do is whine and complain. Let’s support them send them thank you e mails, no gripes, just a thank you. Yes, I know it will be hard but nothing good ever comes easy. Enough with the bitching and moaning its time we take the bull in a china shop approach.
Yes, you are right atheling.
If Congress is officially closed for 5 weeks, then Bush should be appointing judges by executive power. If it is open then turn on the lights and cameras.
As for Pelosi’s book, “Know Your Power” the title describes far too many on the Hill who are drunk on power, Americans need to remind them that the power is ours! VOTE THE TYRANTS OUT!!!!
What Should The Republicans Do
1. Stay right there at the House, keep the pressure on St. Pelosi.
2. Get McCain to come there and speak via TIC(or whatever) about the patriotism of these americans who want to “solve” this energy crisis. This whole issue has exploded way beyond petty politics. People are hurting and this is only the beginning. The entire structure of Food Production and Delivery is in dire straits and getting worse daily. OIL IS THE PROBLEM. Add the “stupidity” of Ethanol and the Global Warming Cult and the downhill spiral gets even worse.
3. Take every advantage they have as members of congress to let their constituents and the public in general know what they are doing and why.
4. Get the Republican and Independent Senators involved as well.
5. This Is More Important Than Campaigning. It has taken the better part of 50 years of lies, power grubbing, and public apathy to get into this mess and we need immediate action to begin the process of returning and maintaining this country in its preemminate role as the worlds economic model and engine of advancement. This is the message!!!
OH, and it’s more important than Book Signings.
PC is Thought Control
LEE
It is? Then why are they constantly invoking the Dems position on drilling? Whey are they criticizing the Dems going on vacation? Your statement belies empirical evidence.
Townhall’s contributors are writing about it. Again, your statement belies the evidence.
Uh, only Obama. He’s the one who says we should inflate our tires instead of drilling for oil. Now, as he licks his finger and sees which way the wind is blowing, he flip flops.
Don’t hold your breath.
I have mixed feeling about the dems’ walkout. If they are not there, nothing gets done and nothing gets worse by their stupid ideas. Now that they are gone, can they stay gone? Can we impeach them? How about a tar and feather party when they return?
If this is anything like Cindy Sheehan’s book tour, someone get the pictures and publish them NOW!

I like the BHO idea but I hate having to insult smokey the bear …
Noted: Atheling disagrees with me… just because.
Just had to fix that …
Tgusa, thanks for responding. I will be interested in noting President Bush’s response to this.
Just an observation, but if Sen. McCain wanted to connect with his Republican grassroots base, would he not issue a statement about this event? Yes, he’s a Senator, and this happened in the House, but he is also the only one running for Presidential office. Again, I was just wondering his thoughts.
Similarly, I never said that 25 people was not enough for people to voice their opinion concerning the status quo. I was just asking if the thoughts of those 25 (maybe a few more) Representatives that said that the House should be “in session, when not in session” mirrored the thoughts and opinions of the other 150+ GOP members. Again, just asking the question.
Might be more effective it it said, “Blame me!”
The Reps that support having a vote on the issue of drilling should maintain this action, keeping the pressure on do-nothings like Pelosi and Reid.
Recognizing that Reps. do need to make contact with their constituents at home, someone needs to organize Republican Reps., and blue-dog Dems who support a vote, into a schedule of who will take what days on the floor. For a minimum of 24 Reps. to be there during every day of the break, each Republican Rep. would only have to commit 3 days to the cause.
Maybe Blunt, Pence, and/or Culberson could put this together. If no one does this, diffusion of responsibility will set in, and America continues to suffer.
Everyone needs to contact their Rep. and request that they take a few days to go back to DC and keep the pressure on Pelosi and House Dems to allow a vote on the offshore drilling issue.
From what I’ve been reading and seeing, libs are really perturbed by two things right now:
1. The “Barack/Britney” ad
2. The House revolt
Both incidents are related to exposing the Dems’ fervent resistance towards lowering gas prices. Both incidents are also beginning to highlight the stranglehold that the environmental lobby has on the current, liberal Democrat agenda.
If I was a lib or a Dem, I wouldn’t be happy about this attention either.
Dark Knight, here are the only reasonable answers to your questions:
1. Don’t ask us. Ask Pres. Bush.
2. Don’t ask us. You research the topic yourself.
3. don’t ask us. Ask the House GOP leadership. (but the inference is that they didn’t support it, but then again they didn’t order the GOP house members not to do it.)
Finally, the question I have for you:
SO WHAT??
You are welcome DarkKnight.
McCain in my opinion should run his campaign and not zig zag around responding to what is happening at the moment. The potential President should act Presidential lay out his case, if it crosses paths with what’s going on sobeit. Action not reaction, that’s what the big zero has been forced to do, react. IMHO. The other reps, I’m not sure, I know mine was there and I appreciate it.
What should the Republicans do now?
Twist the knife!!
tgusa is right.
We need to take our champions where we find them, EVEN IF our so-called “leadership” lets us down.
After all, we all KNOW the GOP leadership has behaved like a bunch of weasels of late.
Nan’s book tour–
looks like she needs a jet to appear at the far-flung venues-is she using my and your $$$$$ (taxpayer) to do it?
And -talk about FOOT-PRINTS!!!!!!!!!!
BTW–
Have we heard from SENATOR MC CAIN? His VERBAL support of his fellow REP. conservatives in the House would help his cause with those of us who ???? his sincerity.
Wait – he doesn’t need the votes of the conservative Rep. base—>>>>>>>

Sigh, we are all expendable. I would throw Kermit the frog & Betty Boop under a bus to get to san fran nan!
I’ll be sending some emails but I wish McCain would pick up the baton and run with it as well. His lack of leadership is very apparent.
Hmmm. I guess you don’t read very well. I disagree with you because, as I stated, you ignore empirical evidence. And you are doing it again right now.
Proves my point.
Republicans should hang on the House floor for at least a couple hours a day, or head to one of the monuments and hold for.
Please. It’s obviously still his fault. What’s wrong with you?
/
How about passing out tire pressure guages? They are only a dollar or two for the cheap ones.
You can also get a ‘dashboard obama’ for your car. It’s like a dashboard jesus, but Obama’s head gets bigger when your tire’s pressure is low, reminding you to inflate your tires like a good citizen.
will be trying to get a chicken suit but either way im going to be there , its right around the corner .
I think that we should refer to Rusty and lgm as Gertrude and Heathcliff (I know, I’m showing my age here). Two seagulls who fly in, make a lot of racket, crap all over everything, and then fly off.
I don’t know if its been suggested yet, but the Republicans should all gather for one demonstration after another dressed in travel attire. Loud Hawaiian shirts, bermuda shorts, and flip flops. Maybe someone in a swimsuit with some zinc oxide on their sniffer. Bring signs that say “I’d be on vacation too, but I actually give a damn about America.” Play up the indulgent vacation of the Dems and their apparent lack of care for the American public. Do it day after day, hour after hour all over the DC and place video after video on YouTube. Pound these traitorous Liberals into pulp. None of ‘em have a backbone so it shouldn’t be too hard.
BTW, O-boy’s suggestion that tire inflation and tune-ups did have some merit. But his “facts” don’t really pan out. Proper tire inflation will net you about 5 miles extra per tank of gas or about .17 mpg. It does add up but not to the proportion the Socialist would have you believe. Now about the tune-up. Unless you drive a vehicle that was manufactured prior 1980’s tune-ups aren’t even a necessity for about 50,000 miles because of the electronic ignition and fuel injection. The best thing to do is to regularly change your oil. The engine will run cooler and last longer saving you money in the long run. Ocommie didn’t include that one. I would think that he didn’t want to suggest that we use more oil for the oil changes. Synthetic oil is an option albeit a more expensive one but DRILLING FOR MORE OIL solves that problem for those who can’t afford $6/quart for Synthetic oil.
Here’s to the HOPE that the RNC will listen to it’s base for a CHANGE.
Republicans should be daily hammering home this message to America in announcements, ads and speeches:
“Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the Democrats shut down Congress’ work to lower gas prices because the Democrats wanted to go on a long vacation instead. Tell them Americans need relief at the gas pump more than the Democrats need a six week summer vacation; tell them to get back to their jobs and work with Republicans to end high gas prices – now.”
PatriotRider,
I love how conservatives know what they are talking about, while libs talk out their butts.
As a former mechanic, if you include changing spark plugs every couple of years depending on milage, well said.
Imagine that…not even ONE stop in Texas! ROFLMBO Can not imagine why she wouldn’t want some southern hospitality?
PR,
I’ve gone synthetic oil and save money by changing less frequently.
.
Yup, ChiJedi. And toss in the fact that they were getting tax-free gas in Denver until the Republicans called ‘em on it.
It really burns me that these guys cannot have this amount of gumption when they are in the majority! Maybe we just get too quiet when they’re doing what we want, and not loud enough when they are not?
From Rep. Hoekstra’s office:
“We will be back on the floor for Monday.”
I think we are too tolerant of libs when we have the majority. Being constitutionalists, we accept that people are allowed to have moonbat ideas.
Liberals on the other hand are the least tolerant. One of the reason that you don’t see as many McCain stickers and signs, is because in certain areas you run the risk of getting your car keyed or your lawn trashed.
I’m on my fourth McCain sign in my yard. The Obama sign down the block has remained untouched for 7 months.
I put in motion sensors and video on my front lawn. Last trashing appeared to be high school kids from my well-to-do town. Kids that have everything from capitalism going lib… sickening.
Took the vid to the police. If they can be ID’d I’m pressing charges.
My fifth sign has lasted a week so far. An all time high.
Sorry fourth was trashed. Fifth is up.
Good point. One I had not considered.
Thanks, Les. Always good to have a professional opinion to back you up. I don’t want to be caught talking out my backside. Right JT?
Thank you R’s and a precious few D’s for keeping this going. Millions of American’s are with you. Please doen’t cave. Send our dear Nan out to pasture.
L
Time to call your Senators and ask them if they stand behind their coleagies in the House (yes both Dems and Republicans as it will encourage the latter and annoy the former).
PR,
I’ve always been OK with saying I don’t know. I need more information. I have NEVER heard a liberal utter those words. They never do research, they never read conservative books. They just spit out talking points.
I’ve read just as many lib books as conservative. Last one I read read that was any good was “Tip O’Neil Speaker of the House” I still read them but that was the last one that was any good.
Tip was a blue collar lib, when push came to shove, he would usually do the right thing. And he actually met with constituents because he went home almost every weekend. Try to be just and average American and meet a Dem in his/her local office today.
Also when the pols clocked out back then, they would hang out Dems and Repubs. Now its just pure poison as we see from Pelosi.
JT:
We have the same problem here in the small town where I live. Some friends of mine were fed up with with it and decided to brush sticky tar all over the sides, back and pole of their sign, so that whoever was stealing them will get the black stuff all over themselves. Since they steal it at night, they can’t see the tar. After the first tarred sign disappeared, the second one stayed up.
A lib sign should really consist of a smiley face with a swastika for a nose. If you want to have a little fun smear some Vaseline (petroleum product) on the sign, feels like snot.
I don’t love McCain, I respect a lot about his history and experience. And being an Army brat he’s better for our troops.
I know he is pandering for votes all over the place, but I think we can generally keep him on point the next four years ie. drilling.
Obama is just to horrible to comprehend.
Maybe with a record a few of those jerks won’t get into Harvard and have to community college and get a real job. One less Obama type.
Hmmm…I wonder how long Superglue stays sticky after it’s been applied to something left out in open air.
Tom Price is my rep. He continually impresses me.
I’ve asked Scott Garrett (R) my rep to get down to DC. He’s been a standup conservative, hopefully he put some time in. Will stay on top of it.
My Senators are f’n useless, won’t do anything right w/o being pressured, both libs. I still contact them constantly. Hopefully their poor constituency starts pissing and moaning too.
purplepeep:
Don’t know about Superglue. But I do know that tar will make everything it touches black and sticky – like your fingers, or the inside of your car!:)
“Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) just pretended to be a Democrat. He stood on the other side of the chamber and listed all of the GOP bills that the Dems killed.
He then said, “I am a Democrat, and here is my energy plan” and he held up a picture of an old VW Bug with a sail attached to it. He paraded around the House floor with the sign while the crowd cheered.”
…a “Sunday evening” correction:
I’m pretty sure the car is an ISETTA (by BMW?).
JT, re: “One of the reason that you don’t see as many McCain stickers and signs, is because in certain areas you run the risk of getting your car keyed or your lawn trashed.”
The lack of an Obama sign IS a McCain sign… sorry about your property, contraire to popular belief, pit bulls make great pets.
Im glad to see Representative Tom Price standing up to the dems, even though I’m not in his district.
That’s good, but I was thinking of how they would be “stuck” with the evidence.
A squirt gun or mini-sprinkler filled with dye and hidden in the ground, rigged to go off when a sign is yanked might be interesting, too.
IDEA:
They need to chew up some time, so I think the beginning of the day could be spent proclaiming that their legislative body is not in session. And then delve into why it is not in session. Go through the entire roll with a simple script such as…
Is _________, Democrat from the Great State of __________ here today to work to solve the energy crisis for the people of the United States of America ?
(pause)
Regretfully __________, Democrat from the great state of _______ is on vacation.
I’ll bet this stuff would work great:
http://www.pestproducts.com/glue.htm
Works on 4 legged rats, and probably those on 2 legs as well.
Jason Altmire D-PA 4th district, is having a “telephone conference call/town hall meeting” at this very moment concerning high fuel cost. I have submitted that I wish to ask a question, my question, “will you join those House members tomorrow at the Capital to force a vote on drilling?”. I doubt the coward will take my question. So far, it has been nothing but a left-wing pity party.
Once again the wimpy, cowardly, pathetic, good for nothin’ Republicans have shown the world that they care more about their own personal schedules rather than the good of this country. What a bunch of pansies! Quitting their golden opportunity to humiliate the treacherous Democrats at 5:00 so they can have their little elitist weekends and come back when they feel like it on Monday.
Sheeeeeeeesh! What’s even more pathetic than them is the number of people rallying to them as the hope for America in November.
These sorry, self-serving creeps won’t do anything to “shove it” to the Democrats. It’s just a game to them… a playful romp in their exclusive sandbox. A bunch of wealthy better-than-you snobs in a political class that includes the super evil and the supremely evil alike.
I guess what sickens me is that they are all friends with the enemy in like manner as John McCain is in lockstep with the enemy. Guess what? They are ALL the enemy – the whole pompous bunch of them! Democrat / Republican whatever. This protest is all just a show to make people think that Republicans are fighting for them… yeah right. These disgusting people are more concerned about playing golf than making sure every American knows that DEMOCRATS are responsible for the energy crisis in this country.
#159 Dr.LBP-
I know you are right-
We’ve allowed this slippery -slide-so-
I’m not going to give in …
I’ll support the new-brave ones like ;
West
Russell
Manion
McClintock
The complete thought:
We’ve allowed this slippery -slide by accepting the lesser of two evils format (”take what the party gives you and be quiet!”) for 30 + years…..
THEY are NOT royalty! (although they act like they are)
The Founders got RID of royalty.
The Republicans need to bring in their own cameras and stream the broadcast over the Internet. I doubt Pelosi can stop that — especially if the cameras are private property — though I’d love to see her try.
Any promise from Obama to drill is about as reliable as Clinton’s campaign promise to give a middle-class tax cut. Zip, zero nada. Don’t fall for it, America. He’s in too deep with the enviro-extremist groups.
How about a no confidence vote on the majority leadership in the house. Now that might get some Republicans elected in November. I can see the Campaign Slogan now, at least we’re not Democrats
First thing in the morning I’m going to contact my Rep in the House to see what else I can do to support them in their fight for an energy bill. His advice last week was to contact Pelosi at 202-225-0100 to ask her to cancel August vacation until an energy bill is passed. Needless to say, she ignored the calls.
He was one of them who stayed behind on Friday to make our displeasure known to the democrats. I let him know Friday how proud I was of him.
If yours didn’t support the ‘rebellion’, make your displeasure known.
I haven’t a clue what all is in this “bipartisan” energy plan, but I do KNOW this…if there is nothing in it to protect those companies who would begin drilling, building nuke plants, working with shale to oil etc, from the lawsuits that will be filed, or the tedious stalling in issuing “permits” for their projects, then this is just a “stunt” by those involved in it’s origin. They, more than anyone, know the roadblocks thrown in the way of companies in the past, to get anything done. The lawsuits etc, will tie these companies up in litigation for eternity!
If they think I’m so stupid as to buy into their plan without this protection, they got another think comin’.
So,WHERE’S THE PROTECTION?
It was a stunt. The show’s over. Move along, there’s nothing to see here.
They’ve joined their colleagues on vaca.
may want to read this update fender bender.
RRRRR they -the Republicans -on the H.floor now?
You know how much “faith” I have in their new-found spines!
We’ll see>>>>>>>>>
I don’t think so, maybe later, right now it’s business as usual only “the lights are off and nobody’s home”
I cannot believe that these IDIOTS have as much support as they do right now.
$4 gas, 9% worst approval rating in history, and an idiot they are putting up for POTUS.
If the GOP does not do something fast to capitalize on this we conservatives are going to be missing out big time.
Well said, think this applies to ‘the House” since the 06 elections.
And don’t stop until they OK drilling…
Errah. I stuffed the old gas tank on the Olds full of “Know yer Power” and I can’t get it to start errah!! Can anyone help?
Don’t forget the tin foil hats… it keeps you cool on a hot day!
Doesn’t the Dems’ intransigence remind you of the scene from Lord of the Rings were the hobbit-like creature Smeagol plaintively states: “Not listening, not listening, not listening” while covering his ears?
It would be amusing if it wasn’t so dangerously out of step with the geopolitical realities that our country is facing right now.
Errah. I need to check with San Fran Nan and see if it will run on Botox. Gass is too expensive up here on the cape, errah.
Actually doing something would jeopardize their 14-point approval rating. Why would Nancy Peloser want to do that? Things are going so well.
START REPORTING ON THIS, MSM. YOU ARE THE REAL USEFUL IDIOTS. GET OUT OF OBAMA’S BACK POCKET AND FULFILL YOUR MANDATE.
“war dance of the hand maidens of the oil companies.”
Wow. Just, Wow. Is she the speaker of the house or a 20 year old Berkley student?
