Do non-Muslim employees get to perform their religious observances on company time? Is Tyson going to build a Chapel for the Christian employees to go to on company time? Somehow I doubt it.

I don't by Tyson stuff now, and I most certainly won't start buying their stuff now.

Yep, I stopped buying Tyson products years ago. They are the single biggest reason Arkansas in a sanctuary state.

Also, for a while they had a "natural" version of their chicken, according to the package label. I thought, "how can that be, nothing Tyson's touches is natural"? Sure enough, they had to pull the chicken....not natural after all.

Tyson's is the worst of America.

I have no problem with one plant out of 119 with 80% of the unionized members voting to approve this change in holidays. They could have traded the employee's birthday (one of the other paid holidays) instead, but the employees chose to give up Labor Day. This was not company-forced or employee-forced. This was a negotiation between the company and the union, and the outcome was what the two decided was best.

A friend of mine used to not get Labor Day off so her company could celebrate Yom Kippur. If I named her company, would the same people start boycotting their products?

I don't see the difference.

Now, if Tyson knowingly and continually hire illegals, that's a completely different story! That's well worth a boycott.

Thanks for the information. After reading the response, I can understand Tyson's actions. Those saying the union is the reason are correct. Many corporations will have different holidays (although labor day is never taken away) due to local condtions. Texas sites may have Texas independence day etc.

Now, for my soapbox. Those who tout "I love all LEGAL immigrants", this is the direct result of your blind obedience to "we are a nation of immigrants" and "I value all legal immgrants because we all benefit from their presence" nonsense. Our PC compassion for refugees and mass immigration policies (which have no standards for admittance to our country) will naturally bring many many immigrants that are not, IMHO, a value to America, our traditions, and our culture. You can expect much much more of the loss of our traditional holidays as we continue to pile in more immigrants each year from all over the world. As we bring in more muslims, the demands for honoring traditional muslim holidays will increase dramatically. As more and more hispanics enter the US the demands for honoring their own national hlidays will increase (eg expect Cinco de Mayo to be pushed as a holiday in the Southwest at some point). These are the inevitable results of mass immigration policies when assimilation is not demanded and we bring in immigrants that are not the best and brightest. Not to mention we are further stressing natural resources, loss of open sapces, congestion, overcrowding, higher taxes to pay for low paid immigrants, crowded schools, loss of english as national language, etc. So remind me again of the value of mass immigration? So if you support mass immigration, you have no business complaingin about Tyson's actions. Sorry, but this outcome is so obvious to those who think out past 2 years.

This is the response you get back for emailing them about this horrendous decision.

Labor Day Still Recognized at Tyson Foods
Union Contract Provision only at Shelbyville, TN Plant

Springdale, Arkansas - August 4, 2008 - Contrary to recent reports,
Labor Day has not been done away with at Tyson Foods. This issue
concerns only the plant at Shelbyville, TN. The majority of employees
at the Tyson plant in Shelbyville, TN, are represented by the Retail,
Wholesale and Department Stores Union (RWDSU), an American union that
asked for and received Eid al-Fitr, as one of their eight paid holidays,
in place of Labor Day. This applies only to the Shelbyville plant and
resulted as part of the union contract. This change does not apply to
Tyson's other 118 plants. This is not a religious accommodation rather,
is part of a union-initiated demand.

This change came about as a result of union demands brought to the
negotiating table, and was agreed upon by Tyson in an effort to reach a
contractual agreement with the union. The contract that calls for this
change was unanimously recommended by the 12-person bargaining committee
and overwhelmingly agreed upon by a 4-to-1 vote by the rank and file of
the membership of the union in the Shelbyville plant.

Because of seasonal demand for the product-the plant produces fresh
chicken for retail consumption-the plant has worked on Labor Day for the
past several years (paying the employees holiday pay). It is not
uncommon for a number of our plants to run on holidays due to customer
demands.

The Muslim population at the Shelbyville plant is primarily composed of
approximately 250 Somali employees, who are political refugees and came
to the plant primarily as a result of refugee resettlement efforts based
in Nashville. They were employed at the plant through the Tennessee
Department of Employment Security office. There were three Somali
employees on the twelve-person bargaining committee representing the
union during contract negotiations.

The Shelbyville complex employs approximately 1,200 people.
Approximately 1,000 workers are covered by the union agreement at
Shelbyville.

It's amazing how unions are celebrated as the backbone of America by the media, yet all they really care about is collecting dues. First, they encourage illegal immigration. Now, their even willing to sell out their own holiday.

Boycott Tyson for their complicity in undermining an American holiday.

I think every Christian should ask for a special prayer room from their employer and see how many actually get one.

I stopped buying Tyson years ago when I found out they were in the tank for Clinton, who gave them passes for polluting rivers in return for "donations."

This is just adding to the heap.

Why not a) make 9/11 a day of remembrance and b) tell these Muslims that they have to work on Christmas?
