Name Al Gore’s hugetastic boat!

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 6, 2008 10:11 AM

Barack Obama wants us all to turn down our thermostats, get rid of our SUVs, and monitor each other’s tire pressure to conserve energy and rescue the planet. How about going after the lavish consumption of his fellow purported eco-warriors?

Let’s start with Green Messiah Al Gore’s massive boat outside Nashville. It’s docked at Hurricane Marina on Center Hill Lake in Smithville, about an hour east of Nashville.

Steve Gill has the goods on Gore’s “Bio-Solar One”–which is supposed to be environmentally acceptable because it’s biodiesel-fueled and solar-powered.

Only, it didn’t have the solar panels until local whistleblowers called attention to it (his spokespeople now say the panels will be installed today) and has instead been plugged in, “sucking a lot of energy from the ‘evil’ energy companies,” as Gill points out:

How many conscience-easing carbon offsets do you think this behemoth will need?

I hear there’s a bumper sticker on the back of it that says “My other boat is a sailboat. Trust me.”

Contest time: Name Gore’s boat.

My suggestion: H.M.S. Eco-hypocrisy.

All aboard.

***

Commenter lawbwrs: “It’s official name is ‘Bio-Solar One’..yes.. he named his boat “BS1″! We CAN[']T do better than that!”

Update: Steve Gill has more at PJM.

BTW I HATE with a passion to say this but, that boat is actually economical for its size. It is a light weight cruiser designed to skim the surface not plow it. It is mostly light weight aluminum construction. A motor yacht that size would be a fuel sucker to the extreme. His choice for fuel economy per size is a very good one.

I have lived on a sailboat around the downtown NYC region for 10 years now.

I’m not a big A/C guy, so my dock power bill has been averaging only $300-$400 per year.

The guy next to me, who is hardly ever there, owns a powerboat that perpetually runs its AC in the warmer months and heater in the colder months. His bill runs over $300 per month = $3600 per year.

Gore’s boat seems to be running two 120 volt lines – one for standard plug-in appliances, and one dedicated for heating, A/C and refrigeration.

Power usage can be measured at the public utility box, usually located right in the gatehouse that leads down to the dock.

My guess is that a guy like Al Gore will constantly run his AC and heat to combat moisture build up inside the boat.

As much as I detest Al Gore, I don’t think we should condemn him for living comparably to others who enjoy similar income and wealth. This boat is no different that many boats owned by thousands of boat owners across the country. It is certainly not extravagant. Success allows one to access the finer things in life. All Al Gore needs to do is cut back on his energy consumption, which I’m certain he has. You can’t expect him to live like a person on welfare.

I am a 65 year old retired middle-class male. After years of saving and investing, I have two boats, personal watercraft, two Suburbans, an F-150, a Towncar, and several off-road vehicles. I vacation less, drive less, and use substantially less energy than I used just a few years ago. I am doing my part. I even make sure that my tires are inflated properly and that the engines are properly tuned. However, I am not going to get rid of everything and change my life. It’s not appropriate to pick on Al Gore when guys like John Travolta and Tiger Woods put him to shame is it??
