Good news: Military deployed to fight illegal immigration!
In Italy, that is:
Soldiers were deployed throughout Italy on Monday to control embassies, subway and railroad stations and centers for illegal immigrants as part of broader government measures to fight crime.
By the time it is fully in effect next week, the effort will place about 3,000 soldiers alongside regular police and military police officers, a visible signal to citizens that the government “has responded to their demands for greater security,” Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa said in an interview on the Italian Sky News channel.
The conservative government of Silvio Berlusconi won elections in April promising to crack down on petty crime and illegal immigration, which polls have indicated are primary concerns here.
Really? It’s a concern here, too…so maybe that means a serious political push for border security is just around the corner!
There must be a pony here somewhere…

I like his “deport”-ment
I’d prefer we get serious about compelling full-bore ICE and Border Patrol enforcement instead, concatenantly with eliminating/punishing public entity sanctuary policies and pushing hard for judicial and local law enforcement cooperation with immigration control/enforcement authorities.
I think involving the military thus domestically poses a risk of military politicization which will be both distasteful and detrimental to both the polity and the volunteer forces themselves.
Italian politicians doing the work American politicians won’t do.
Maybe we can get Berlusconi to put on a seminar for Barack and McCain. Sounds like he has the ability to listen AND respond to the concerns of his people.
Speaking of Italian police action, I am reminded of the time in 1985, when then Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi dispatched a squad of Italian cops to stare down two C-141s filled with American Navy Seals, who had just forced an airliner full of Palestinian terrorists (fresh from hijacking the Achille Lauro and murdering a wheelchair-bound American pensioner named Leon Klinghoffer)to land at a NATO airbase in Sicily. As a result of Italian hubris and ineptitude, many of the Palestinian terrorists were allowed to continue on their journey, including terrorist ringleader Abu Abbas.
For you Islamofacist enthusiasts, Abu Abbas was later captured by US Forces during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq (sorry, Libs) and he died shortly after while in US Military custody (not sorry, Libs.)

As long as we have liberals in power, knowing that these illegals will vote for them, eventually…or, in some places, this November, they will continue to “welcome” them to the U.S.. Nice to see some country doing something about the illegals. Of course, our state/national governments won’t take the hint.

It’s one thing to employ the military along the border to intercept or prevent foreign incursions into our country. It’s quite another to employ the military as a police force within the country. That is precisely what Italy has done and is expressly forbidden here in the US by our Constitution. Look up posse commitatus.
With Michelle’s recent post about the incursion of Mexican military into Arizona I would whole-heartedly support stationing troops along the border.
Now this is one European wave were it to hit American shores, that I could definitely get behind – good for you, Italy!

Put military sharpshooters on our new big border wall, and the problem would be solved.
Everytime i see one of those headlines and it turns out its somewhere else, its like i’m hearing the music from the Price is Right when you lose one of the games.
If we could have the same initiative, the same drive, and the same adherance to law as other places in these respects, we might actually get somewhere with border enforcement.

Meanwhile where is the press about the Kosher Meat Packing Plant in Iowa. We have found out that the company violated CHILD LABOR LAWS with some 50 illegals (who they flew in from Guatemala) were from 14 to 17 years old. When Somalians came down to replace them they quit after 1 month because they were treated like SLAVES. The Illegal Immigration BUSINESS is corrupt and it has badly influenced both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
These politicians should be arrested, tried and convicted. This is not about Liberalism vs Conservatism. It is about the ABUSE of power.
While I’m not a fan of using the military to augment civilian policing agencies (that whole Posse Comitatus thing), I would not mind its expertise in laying anti-vehicular and anti-personnel obstacles along the border. We could even use UAV training squadrons from the Air Force to provide overwatch.
I’m talking an anti-vehicular berm, followed by an anti-vehicular minefield, and anti-personnel minefield, then a fence to ensure Americans don’t stumble into the mess.
I’m just wondering how much money we sent them to pay for this.
I’m making this assumption based on the money we offered Mexico to secure it’s southern border (last I heard they turned it down because we wanted to mandate what they did with it) and the money we gave Egypt to secure it’s border with Gaza.
Seems every time we get a headline like this it involves our paying for it.
Precisely! It is excellent training for hot weather and desert warfare. How about just a few boot camps with marksmanship training areas pointing south?
After the incident recently where a Border Patrol Agent was held at gunpoint by Mexican Military ON US SOIL, I think three squadrons of A-10 Warthogs, with 30mm Gatling guns able to turn a tank into swiss cheese, should start patroling the border. And anything larger than a jackrabbit without a IFF (Indentification Friend or Foe) beacon is fair game.
We need to quit dicking around with Mexico and stop the invasion!
When I was in Italy in 1996, I saw anti-illegal immigration protests. I also saw soldiers with machine guns stationed at the periphery of the piazzas, ready for a terrorist attack, I now think. Italy had, has, a big problem with people floating in from the Balkans and North Africa along their coasts. Guess what, some are radical Muslims.
It took them this long to crack down, but now it’s happening. Let’s hope we wake up sooner.

The Founding Fathers have harsh, harsh words for people of this stripe. By their lights, in time-of-war it isn’t unreasonable to treat active violation of their Oath as treason, with all that involves!
Civility toward these people, in both parties, hasn’t engenderes respect from them. It has simply given them the mistaken impression they are our masters!

the great new law in Oklahoma is the only thing I’ve seen that is really a serious improvement on this issue.
