Leftist group targets conservative donors for intimidation
Get a load of these guys:
Nearly 10,000 of the biggest donors to Republican candidates and causes across the country will probably receive a foreboding “warning” letter in the mail next week.
…Led by Tom Matzzie, a liberal political operative who has been involved with some prominent left-wing efforts in recent years, the newly formed nonprofit group, Accountable America, is planning to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions.
“We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground,” said Mr. Matzzie, who described his effort as “going for the jugular.”
The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.
Free speech is cool with these guys, see, just as long as they approve of what you’re saying. Otherwise, they’re going to attempt to shut you up. They’re especially interested in strongarming Republican donor Sheldon Adelson (of Freedom’s Watch) , but as I mentioned back here, they won’t be the first leftist group to try to shut him down.
Accountable America would be far more alarming, by the way, if they were smarter:
…anonymity is a potential obstacle to the group’s efforts. Outside political groups organized as 501(c)4 entities, including Accountable America, do not have to disclose the names of their donors.
Oopsie. Think about that: by sending intimidating letters to potential donors, Accountable America has actually discouraged direct contributions to conservative candidates (which are on the public record) and created an incentive for donors to give anonymously to groups like Freedom’s Watch, which can legally protect their donor list from the likes of Accountable America!
It wouldn’t be the first counterproductive leftist campaign in recent memory, would it?

UPDATE: Speaking of counterproductive political efforts, Commenter WilliePeter reminds me that Matzzie was also behind the attacks on General Petraeus. And those worked out so well for the Left, didn’t they?

Ordinary Coloradan said it right. I, too, do not take threats lying down. Never did. If I get threatening letters, they better be prepared for a reaction. Don’t mess with an enraged Scotsman.
If the Republican donors I know got a letter such as this, they’d probably be inclined to contribute more, not less. Brilliant!
Perhaps a new 501c3 should be started.

Uh…gee..I’m scared out of my wits. I haven’t been this frightened since I hid behind a chair watching the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz when I was FIVE.
I could not see the wording of the letter there, however if it is indeed threatening or an attempt to coerce or bribe, then you can bet there will be police complaints for extortion, followed by legal action. They’re going to need every cent of that 2 million and a whole lot more to cover law suits.
Oh, and I wonder if they will publish a list of their contributors, then we can include them in legal action, or maybe just send them a little letter..

I dont think it would be a stretch to believe if a republican group had sent these letters to democratic donors, that they would be called everything except nice and that there would be cries of unfairness, racism, partisan politics, and anything else you can think of…

Democrats have always, by and large, gone out of their way to silence dissent. If they don’t like your message, they try to shut it down. this is just another in a long line of examples of this sort of thing in play.
And to beat any trolls to the punch, if republicans are, in fact, doing this..they should cease -immediately- and not participate in this kind of garbage. It doesnt have a place here, and i certainly wouldnt condone the practice.

If I understand this correctly, these guys are going to go after, big oil co., big business, big politicans, big talk radio host’s, big book and newspaper writers and other big donors. Well, if they really do this, I wouldn’t give anyone a bet that anybody will hear of them after this year.

Kathy Griffin has a message board, and most of the posters are liberals. Many are Obama supporters. I am temporarily banned after I started a political thread and criticized Obama. Someone told me my exile may be due to my political beliefs.Only one other person posting on the thread shares my views, but I have been more vocal.
Banning me is not illegal or wrong.I am not criticizing Kathy Griffin or more than a minority of liberals who post there. However, I suspect the moderators were trying to quiet me in the same manner as the leftist group tried to stop conservative donors.
Anyone can google Kathy’s site, read the thread and judge for yourselves.

In literature, it is called cataloging and is a very effect tool for making people think about a point. The point here is that liberals are masters of Orwellian doublespeak.

From what I was told last night the McCain and RNC auditors believe these ghost donors could be moles to embarrass the McCain 08 team later in the election-it has happened before. But it is only dirty politics if used by Republicans.

Gee, I guess Tom Matzzie, former Director of Online Organizing for the Kerry-Edwards campaign and the former Washington Director and lobbyist for MoveOn.org and also the former Campaign Manager for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq (AAEI), who now runs the AAEI spin-off Campaign to Defend America has finally milked all these LIBERAL COWS OF EGO JUICE and is now thirsting for new opportunities with his latest self-stroking organization: Accountable America. Tom Matzzie seems to be awfully adept at running “former” left-wing-falling-star lost causes into the ground. What I think is humorous about Matzzie’s statement is when he says:

To say these groups have courage, is an understatement. Can you imagine going after multi-billionaires, personally, and not fearing for your own safety? I thought groups like these tried to sell the public on how evil and “scary” the “rich” Republican’s were?

This must be “the change we have been looking for”, the new politics and free speech of the 21st century. This is not surprising in the least. The policy of the liberal left has become “scorched earth” and “there are no innocents”. I had believed I had heard most everything until last night, when O’Reilly had the ever charming former Senator Mike Gravel as a guest. The good senator has an ax to grind against the prosecutor who is still going after Sami Al-Arian, lovable fundraiser for Hamas and all around good guy. The senator claims to have told his groupies to find out “where he works, where he lives, where his children go to school, and where he attends church and confront him there until he stops persecuting poor Sami”. This is a former U.S. senator advocating that people find out where a man’s children go to school and use them to get at the father. This is the new face of the liberal democrat party. They take the politics of personal destruction to a level that only brown shirts would understand.
I would submit that the action you’re citing isn’t the same as whats being discussed.
on one hand, you have democratic supporters sending these letters to republican doners, trying to scare people out of sending funds.
On the other, you have someone kicked out of their party for supporting the other ticket.

The Clintons learned the politics of personal destruction works. They also know a lie told often enough in the main stream media is accepted, at least for awhile. These genteel thugs must be exposed for what they are. Calls and e mails to network offices, and letters to the editor are a start.
Where do these foolish people live? They wouldn’t get away with this sort of nonsense in my neck of the woods for very long.
For me it isn’t the ‘outing’ that I despise – It is the Campaign Finance Reform and various other laws that make this possible.
