What the US and NATO does -or fails to do-will determine whether or not these new republics keep their freedom to continue their nascent experiments with representative government and market economies-or have all the efforts made to keep a Free World go to nothing-by letting the Russians reconstitute their empire.

Nations like Georgia (who are the third largest source of ground troops in Iraq), the Czech REpublic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland will be watching to see if the lot they cast with the west was worth it. They are official members of the NATO alliance.

Georgia has been on the verge of acquiring NATO memebership, and the Russian Federation doesn’t like that…they are in fact testing the US and NATO over South Ossetia-make no mistake about it.

However with the news today that Georgia shot down two Russian Fighters that refused to identify themselves over hostile airspace, I silently cheered.

Unfortunately Russia has launched a coordinated ground offensive.

Russia has to be very careful here because of two factors:

1) The US lending large logistical and support and intel

2) The EU’s financial interests

It’s time the Georgians kick some Russian ass!

I have no problems fighting, and I damn sure don’t have to prove myself after 18 years in the Corps. I would expect that sort of comment from a resident of South Ossetia, as apparently they’ve been seeking to secede from Georgia for quite some time. It’s hard to know the truth of it all from here.

What’s interesting is residents of the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, said: (source Fox)

“We lost our city … The Georgians are like Nazis, they are killing civilians, women and children with heavy artillery and rockets,” said 28-year-old Sarmat Laliyev, a Tskhinvali resident who had fled to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia.

Did the Polish fire on German citizens before the Germans invaded? No? Then it’s different isn’t it? Bringing up the Nazis any time any nation has a conflict with any other nation is getting really tired. Fact of the matter is that Georgia shelled a city with a large number of resident Russian citizens. What did Georgia EXPECT would happen?!? Did they honestly think Russia would just say “Oh, that’s ok, you can kill a bunch of our citizens, we didn’t want those folks anyway.” What would our government have done had it been our citizens. OH WAIT! We have a perfect example! You might recall that the last time someone blew up a building in our country, we travelled halfway around the world and invaded TWO much smaller sovereign nations. Was that the same as the Nazi’s too? No, of course not. We had our (good) reasons. Those who compared us with Nazi’s for those conflicts were wrong too. I mean, come on sonofdy. . .drop the melodrama and let’s talk about the topic rationally.

What’s your excuse for putting words in my mouth? I haven’t for one moment ‘backed’ either side in this. Encouraging people to examine the issue from both sides before making statements that we should rush off to involve ourselves in yet another war is NOT the same as ‘backing’ a side, unless the definition of the word has changed and I didn’t get the memo.
