<blockquote>From my point of view I cannot understand why Georgia would be considered such a great ally to the United States other than the fact that they are strategically located in that area. </blockquote> - chep

Me either. Apparently, it's enough for some folks that they sent troops to Iraq, even though it was in their interests to do so, regardless if they're friendly to us or not.

Georgia attacked Osettia. They're getting what they deserve. All this talk about them signing a cease fire - it sounds like talk to me. Don't get me wrong.. I don't agree with Russian politics nor military movement across their borders. A the same time they are tired of terrorists being harbored in Georgia and in light of this recent attack I cannot say I blame them. I don't buy that Russia is invading in order to take over the oile pipeline as several people are claiming.

From my point of view I cannot understand why Georgia would be considered such a great ally to the United States other than the fact that they are strategically located in that area. They provoked the attacks and now that they are getting their butts handed to them everyone is up in arms that they are the victims. Instead they were the perpetrators.

Putin is calling for regime change.

Oh, wait. Only the Messiah of Democracy has been called to do regime change under Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews.

Putin's so sarcastic. Easy to see why a patriotic leader like Putin has a 90% approval rating and the halfwit ideologue stumbles along at 28%.

Russia wants her
old empire back and I bet she gets it. The draw down of the US military under WJ Clinton never has been restored and Putin knows it. Obama will talk and McCain will thunder but Russia knows that short of all out war we can not reach Georgia or Ossetia. This battle may end. Russia has a long, and successful, history of fighting their wars over time. It was in our fathers, or grandfathers, lives that Poland became a country for 20 lousy years. Oh yea, Russia is back.

We need to concentrate on continential defense and let the rest of the world rot. Korea will be one of the next hot spots. Kim knows we are divided. We on the southern border have our own problem.

<blockquote>That would make sense if any of this was taking place in russia. Why do you support outright military conquest by russia?</blockquote> - sonofdy

Do I really need to re-post my response to this question that I posted in the other topic related to this conflict? I guess I might as well, since you're repeating the question. Here it is, since you obviously missed it the first time around:

What’s your excuse for putting words in my mouth? I haven’t for one moment ‘backed’ either side in this. Encouraging people to examine the issue from both sides before making statements that we should rush off to involve ourselves in yet another war is NOT the same as ‘backing’ a side, unless the definition of the word has changed and I didn’t get the memo.

For the record, a Yashmak is also a drink made with rye whiskey, vermouths, Pernod, and sugar syrup. It was a nickname given to me by a drunk in college, but yes, the word also means what you said sonofdy.

No, I don't approve of Russia expanding beyond its borders. However, I'm not going to get hysterical over their expansion into a province that has a GDP of just $12 million. There are basketball players who make more than that a year. Yet some of you are talking like you'd like to see us commit our nation to military action against Russia, the 2nd most powerful military in the world, while we're still engaged elsewhere. I'm not going to get drawn into that sort of hysteria. It'd be one thing, if Russia had just spontaneously rolled across the border. But they didn't. They didn't do anything until Georgia bombarded a bunch of Russian civilians in the capital of South Ossetia. I cannot fault them for that.

Boomer, you ask where's the outrage at the Russians and their allies for bombing apartments and the like. I'll go question for question. Where's the corresponding outrage at the Georgians for bombarding a city filled with civilians? Both sides are in the wrong here, there's no doubt about it.

<blockquote>That’s a bit like saying that Mexico would be justified in attacking and invading us (Gee, they already do, don’t they) for dealing with our illegal immigration problem.</blockquote> - txvet2

How on earth can you equate arresting and deporting illegal aliens, with firing artillery and rockets into a city? That makes no sense.

Oh ffs..
"<em>Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council began meeting for a <strong>fourth day</strong> on Sunday to discuss the conflict. It has so far failed to agree on the wording of a statement calling for a ceasefire.</em>" (<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7552908.stm" rel="nofollow">BBC</a>)
Four days of meetings and they still can't even write a letter. A clear demonstration of the complete and utter ineptitude of the UN Security Council.

One thing that bothers me about the Russian incursion into Georgia is the stark difference in how they are prosecuting this invasion. Our military goes to great pains to minimize targeting innocent civilians and the Russians and their allies have been dropping bombs on apartment buildings and shelling civilian positions. Where is the outrage from the usual suspects of the left anti-war crowd? They should be out rabidly protesting in the streets demanding something must be done or is it they have too many ties with their former Soviet Union allies to denounce this violation of international law.

Al Reuters is reporting an attempt to bomb the oil pipeline that runs to Western Europe. So far they have missed, which is either a warning or just bad airmanship. From what I am seeing it already is starting to feel like fall in the middle of nowhere Idaho. I have a feeling it is going to be an early and cold winter this year. Thanks to 40 years of short sightedness on behalf of the Democrats and their rabid tree hugging allies we could be looking at a real World War for Oil.

The Ukrainian’s have already stated the Russian Black Sea fleet sent to blockade Georgia will not be allowed to return to their port in Sevastopol as long as this aggression continues. All Russia has to do is start the same tactics with the Ukraine to start a shooting war on that front. I wonder how long before the greatly weakened military forces of NATO act or come whining to the already badly stressed forces of the US to bail them out again.

The only upside is the Georgians have pulled back and are trying to negotiate with the Russians. Hopefully the Russians will agree, but of course they can kiss the territory belonging to the breakaway Republic region goodbye. We are either looking at another “Guns of August” scenario which could start another World War (not that I believe Bush or NATO is going to do much) or the chipping away of former Soviet Union Republics in the same manner Nazi Germany took over territory mostly without even firing a shot in the 1930s.

#1 I said I’d like to isolate ourselves, I didn’t realize I had to write a 50,0000 word dissertation on why we can’t do that …I know why that cannot happen.</blockquote>

And I pointed out that it was a thoughtless comment. Obviously, with any thought at all, you'd have come up with infinite reasons why you don't <em>really</em> want to be isolated from the rest of the world, or at least those parts you specified (well, maybe Europe, although I like their wines). Now if you'd just said you wished their citizens would stop invading us, I'd agree with you in a heartbeat. No points for originality with the 50,000 word dissertation comment. Try thinking up your own insults, or you take all the fun out of it.

That's a bit like saying that Mexico would be justified in attacking and invading us (Gee, they already do, don't they) for dealing with our illegal immigration problem. One of the links that see-dubya provided notes the consistent pattern by Russia of repopulating occupied areas with ethnic Russians and then using that as justification for annexation.
