Kwame in hot water again; Michigan governor to decide on removing him from office

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 11, 2008 04:23 PM

Corruptocrat Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s in trouble again– and the Democrat governor of Michigan is getting involved. RACIST!!!!!

First, the latest legal troubles:

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick violated the terms of his bond by spending time at his mother’s house in Detroit on Saturday while his sister, a witness in an assault case against him, was there, a spokesman for the state Attorney General’s Office said Sunday.

State lawyers will take action today in 36th District Court, according to Rusty Hills, spokesman for Attorney General Mike Cox.

Ayanna Kilpatrick, the mayor’s sister, was present when Kwame Kilpatrick allegedly pushed Wayne County Sheriff’s Detective Brian White into JoAnn Kinney, an investigator for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, while White and Kinney were attempting to serve a subpoena to Bobby Ferguson, one of the mayor’s friends.

Also present were his brother-in-law and officers in his security detail. The incident happened July 24 at Ayanna Kilpatrick’s home in Detroit.

Cox charged Kwame Kilpatrick with two counts of felonious assault in the case.

“The order’s clear,” Hills said. “There’s not supposed to be contact. There was contact.”

And now, this:

Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s office soon will outline how she will conduct a hearing to decide whether Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick should be removed from office.

The Detroit City Council has asked Granholm to remove Kilpatrick from office for misconduct related to the settlement of a whistleblower’s lawsuit. Granholm will preside over the hearing scheduled for Sept. 3.

An order outlining some procedures for the hearing is expected early this week, possibly as early as Monday.

Er, guess he won’t have a speaking gig at the Democrat convention this election season. But you never know. Fellow face demagogue Al Sharpton got his.

On primary night the honorable Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick trailed her opponent in the 13th district until 1:00 am in the morning at which time the precinct containing Evergreen Cemetery reported. Over 1600 voters with a Evergreen Cemetery address put Kilpatrick ahead and proved to be the margin of victory for the incumbent congresswoman. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick is quoted as saying,”Kwame knows how to dig up the votes in Detroit for his momma”.

Actually, Kwame already tried to do this. Just last month, he was trying to cut a deal to sell Detroit’s half of the Detroit-Windsor tunnel to Canada in order to make up Detroit’s current budget shortfall.

Like so many things, this action was meaningless; selling off public assets requires voter approval in Detroit, not simply the Mayor’s desire.

For better or worse, the city charter is quite clear that only conviction - conviction, not charges - for a felony is sufficient to cost the mayor his office. The other alternative is to have the Governor remove him, which is legal under the state constitution; a hearing is scheduled for Friday, but Granholm is notorious for avoiding decisions, especially those that are unpopular with a large portion of the electorate. And Kwame still has a lot of supporters in Detroit, the state’s most populous city. I doubt Granholm will do anything other than take the matter under consideration, and hope that events play out in such a way that she doesn’t have to stick her neck out.

As for contemplating jail time: that would be the job of the judge and jury, AFTER a conviction. Charges have been filed - the most recent assault charges involve the police, which carries a felony rating. If a conviction is obtained on either of those charges, it’s game over. But any trial is at the very least many months away, as his legal team exercises their due diligence over the matter as slowly as possible.

The guy’s a stain on the city. But let’s not toss aside the rule of law here.

The right thing would have been for Kwame to step down several months ago, when the text messaging scandal first broke. Obviously, he isn’t man enough to do the right thing.

Instead, he’s left that up to others. And like it or not, there’s a process for just that occasion, and it takes time to execute it.

Granholm, as I said above, is famous for doing nothing in such circumstances, hoping others will solve the problem for her. I expect she will simply take the matter under consideration, and that’s the last we’ll hear about it until Kwame’s next eruption. Pity. But I would be shocked to announce his removal.

And he can always run again. Note that the simplest, fastest solution to this whole mess hasn’t even come up: a recall election. Despite being a total ball of slime, Kwame has a huge amount of support within the city, and as mayor that’s all that matters. If an election were held today, at the very bottom of this wretched series of scandals being played out, I think there’s a very good chance he would be re-elected by a wide margin.

Several factors suggest Granholm will not remove Kwame. First, they are products of the same Democrat machine. Second, she is term limited and probably has aspirations for a run at another, higher office. If she dumps Kwame, she gets blamed and stands to lose all those black votes from the DEEtroit area. Third, even some of Kwame’s close buds have begun to see the light and are trying to cut deals. One would get the felonies reduced to slaps on the knuckles in return for him resigning. And if he resigns, some who have read the laws say he could run for mayor again. Fourth, if he ran again, he would win again!

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick only won because of a spoiler, Martha Scott.
The Detroit Free Press has led the way on this, and its editorial board wrote long ago, before he shoved the police officers that sealed his fate, that “Kilpatrick is a liar. He is a pilferer of city funds, and a devious manipulator. Whatever else he has done for the city (and he has done some things well, to be sure) is to be forever eclipsed by his misconduct, the trust he smashed, the bonds of public faith he broke. He has been ignoring the law for so long he cannot help but keep breaking it. He is his own worst enemy. It is sad for the city, but he could care less about the city. It is all about him. Granholm is ineffective at everything, and this is no different. She is worthless.

Actually, I hate to admit it, but we have a second term Democrat Mayor here in Columbus, OH, and he hasn’t managed to bring us down yet. He may go on to bigger and better things in the future for Democrats. So far his biggest screwup has been his wife, her job, and her drinking problems. So he may not be obviously corrupt, but just give him more time LOL.
