Nan on drilling: No longer the hoax I knew
Maybe Do-Nothing Nancy should enter the Olympic diving competition. She gets a 10 for her flip-flop-flop yesterday on drilling. It is now no longer the “hoax” she knew.
What a hoot. Did she think she could sell 2 more books trying to pander and straddle like this? Nan, you’re slaying us. My sides hurt.
PELOSI: I would not. It depends how the drilling is put forth. But I don’t — that is not excluded, let me say it that way. It depends how that is proposed, if the safeguards are there. Now, mind you, 68 million acres — 10 million more acres in Alaska where they can drill. But if there’s — if we can get some great things, in terms of renewable energy resources; a renewable electricity standard; wind, solar, biofuels and the rest in that context, because if you make a decision only to go with the offshore drilling, you are increasing our dependence on fossil fuels and you will never free yourself of that addiction unless you invest in the renewable energy resources that are good for the environment, cheaper for the consumer and will reverse global warming.
And the consumer is our first responsibility. The American taxpayer owns this oil offshore, by the way. Let me make this one final point. This oil is owned by the American taxpayers. The oil companies drill. We give them money to drill there. But we get very little in return.
So I think as we have this debate, which is a very healthy one to have and I welcome it, we have to review and realign the relationship between our oil, big oil’s profits and what it means to the consumer and the taxpayer.

I’m confused about something. If the drilling restrictions are set to expire on October 1, shouldn’t the Republicans be fighting to make sure that they do? Wouldn’t a lack of vote be preferable to passing some compromise bill (limited states, 50-mile restriction, no ANWR, lots of new taxes, etc.) that would lead Americans to think that something was being done when in fact, little or nothing beneficial was being accomplished? Let the damn things expire!

Like Obambi, San Fran Nan doesn’t even know what she doesn’t know about oil production or any other energy production. What’s positive about this is, that most Americans understand and they want the government out of the way. Hopefully, voted out of the way.

Nevermind that Boone Pickens’ windfarms will take up three hundred times the space of one electric plant and only turn out a fraction of the power, ethanol is only 2/3 as efficient as gas, costs more to produce, and drives the cost of food up.
As for solar, my father installed solar panels on his house back in the 80’s, reducing his electric bill by a whopping fifteen cents. The technology hasn’t improved that much since.
And the one alternate energy that HAS proven itself to be efficient, clean, and cost effective (nuclear energy) is still verboten in America, thanks to liberal idiots.
I weep for our nation.
Please give Nancy Pelosi as much media coverage until November as is humanly possible.
You can say what you want about how idiotic the Democrats are looking and sounding, and they are of course, but where are the REPUBLICANS? Why is it the only thing that is happening is this gathering after recess/vacation in D.C.? This is an issue tailor made for the entire country as a national issue that could be driving major changes in the political landscape in Congress and where is the NOISE about it from the right?

Maybe I missed it, did San Fran Nan actually give a reason why she has changed her outlook? What study, what new data, what revelation has made her decide to become “open” to the idea of off shore drilling? To go from one extreme (shutting down the congress hall’s lights, mics, ets) to moving towards, not all the way but moving), the other extreme (let’s drill everywhere) is interesting.
Could it have something to do with the Obamessiah’s change of direction announced a few weeks ago?
Whatever the reason, I am pleased that she is opening up to what the American people want. Even if home drilling doesn’t save a lot at the pump, at least, it will be our own energy source. That might not be better for “so-called” global warming but it would be better for us in this Islamic terrorist filled world.

The government gets, what, 6, 7, 8 TIMES what the oil companies get in return for the drilling, transporting, refining and delivering the finished product to the consumer. What does the government do for the “obscene profits” they reap on the sale of gasoline?

This appears to be the first move in the chess game of the Democrats offering up a sham bill to ‘allow drilling’ based on the efforts of the Gang of 10. Their announcement last week has already provided cover for the Dems, who were running scared on the issue. This sudden willingness by Pelosi to now entertain a drilling bill will most certainly not include the All-of-the-Above bill the House GOP has been pushing for the past few weeks.
Those five idiots may have just killed the momentum for actual energy production legislation.

I was thinking the same thing. Instead of buying peoples’ votes for $1,000 worth of additional payoff money, why not reduce or eliminate the federal gasoline tax so that those of us who actually drive to work get a benefit?

Question for the energy industry folks around here: what percentage of the additional oil to be drilled offshore would typically end up as gas in the US market vs. foreign markets? Obviously, the resulting increase in supply should result in price reductions, but how far would offshore drilling take us on the road to independence from foreign oil? I think Pelosi is fairly incompetent, but this may be what she was referring to with her comment.
Since we are about to lose 1% of the world’s oil supply to Russia as they bomb the pipelines in Georgia, domestic oil looks better and better all the time.

That is a major problem that i have with our production and supply…the fact we’re sending it overseas when we could keep it for our own consumption. Its like growing food in your garden, giving it to your neighbor, and then complaining when you’re hungry.
If we kept more of what we produced and put it to use in our own country, the benefits would be immediate and obvious. I am confident the offshore drilling would increase that benefit even further. If the 260(approx.) billion barrels were ours to keep and use at home…that goes a long way to solving the problem, as other energy alternatives are developed.

Remember Old Teddy Kennedy has killed and offshore windfarms which are not only productive for energy, but also for sport and commercial fishing, artificial reef for scuba diving, and jobs for construction and maintinance.
But one must consider the view 20 miles offshore from the Kennedy compound that the old bugger could never see in the first place.
I once saw a picture of Teddy doing some “drilling” in a small boat offshore and there was some speculation as to if he had changed his opinion on “offshore drilling for oil” although I assume that was not what he was doing.
If Michelle is such a “hack” then why the hell are you visiting HER blog? If Michelle is failing at life by being not only a best-selling author (is San Fran Nan?), but a columnist and popular blogger, I’ll take her idea of failure any day of the week over yours.
