   This statement is bogus. The “V” for victory does not go back to giving people the bird. It goes back to the Middle Ages and the English archers.

   When the French caught an English archer, the archer’s two middle fingers on the right hand were cut off to prevent them from shooting arrows. This was meant to be a message to English archers.

   Sooo before battle, the English archers would taunt the French by making a “V” with the two fingers needed to position and hold the arrow.

   For more information about this (and to learn to build your own English longbow) check out the Archer’s Tale by Bernard Cornwell. Better researched than the bogus history quoted by Rick Husong.

    First off, its, no longer a “she”. Anne Marie Cox left a bit ago and now it is a couple of guys that run the Blog. Second, Wonkette doesn’t pretend to be anything other than political humor. May not be your brand of humor, but lets not make it to be something other than the blog equivalent of slapstick.
