Open-borders lawsuit: English-only rule creates “hostile” school environment
A Catholic school in Kansas with a substantial Hispanic population wants its students to speak English only. The school had to deal with serious discipline problems. Requiring everyone to use the same language helped alleviate disruptions.
Enter the ethnic grievance-mongers and anti-assimilationist mob. They sued the school and were in federal court this week arguing that the English-only rule violated the Hispanic students’ civil rights. Yes, they’ve gone and made a federal case out of it– and they are demanding “court and attorney costs and unspecified damages for discrimination and emotional suffering:”
A lawsuit filed by three Hispanic families against the Catholic Diocese of Wichita challenging a policy that requires students to speak only English while at school goes to trial in federal court today.
“What happened at that school constitutes race discrimination under federal anti-discrimination laws — that is why it is important. That needs to be stopped,” said Christopher McHugh, the attorney representing three 12-year-old students named as plaintiffs in the civil litigation.
The lawsuit seeks an end to the policy and asks for an order barring similar policies at other Catholic schools in the Wichita diocese.
The plaintiffs are claiming the policy violates the Civil Rights Act and another federal statute by intentionally discriminating against the sixth-grade students and causing a hostile educational environment.
The diocese contended in court filings that the English-only rule is not discriminatory and did not cause a hostile environment. It contends the rule was implemented at St. Anne Catholic School as a legitimate response to inappropriate behavior by a few middle school students.
What do you think the militant open-borders Catholic heirarchy thinks of all this?
Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Another dispatch from nutville. I can barely believe that this is my country anymore. Everything is turned on its head. What a bunch of silly fools so many Americans have become. Where does this self-hate come from???
As for me, Im just a simple dope; come to this Country, learn the language or get the truck out, period, end of story. Stupid me for thinking that makes sense.
Of course language is racial.
Ask any linguist about the abundant Africanisms that persist in ‘Black English‘ (the native language of the African-American race).
===========================
This attorney’s crusade is deep within the psychiatric zone.
Perhaps he could deploy a reflectometer to determine the appropriate dermato-linguistic coefficient for this racist parochial school: dark-skinned faculty and students getting to speak the non-English language of their choice … people of palor required to speak English … albinos, and hybrids like Barack Obama, getting wild-card privileges that allow them to speak out of both sides of their mouth.
(Full disclosure — linguistic child abuse: When my academic family moved to Europe, we children were brutally immersed in the local language in the park and in the schools, where our ‘civil rights’ were daily violated by the non-English speaking citizens of our host country. Furthermore, we were neither allowed to march nor vote! We were, however, permitted to cheer
negroesblacksAfrican-Americans like Rafer Johnson and Cassius Clay, in the language of our choice, at the Rome Olympics.)Here in San Antonio it is quickly reverting to a third world country. Half the billboards are in Spanish even in the higher priced neighborhoods. Part of the problem is the business owners who feel that they cannot succeed without the shoppers from Mexico. This is why San Antonio continues to be one of the less educated and lowest paying cities in Texas.

How can you have freedom of speech if you can’t understand the speech part.
This is not only detrimental to the student but, the rest of the class speaking english.
I say let him speak spanish and not learn a damn thing. When he speaks spanish then don’t answer back because you can’t understand what he is saying and move on to english speaking students.
I am so sick of this crap!
Yep, same thing in southern Mexifornia… selling out the nation for a Mexican profit…
The government is creating this animosity as long as they do nothing about it. It is creating a hate filled society against immigrants legal and illegal. The more frustrated people become on this issue the more deaths and assaults will take place like the on recently where the boys beat and killed the illegal immigrant. Though he was an illegal alien and didn’t belong here he didn’t deserve to die for being who he was. This anger will eventually spill over to killing legal immigrants if the government continues to ignore this PROBLEM and not listen to the will of the legal citizens of the US!
I can’t stand calling any business that has automatic attendant where the first response is: “Press 1 for English!” What country is this? What language are we all supposed to speak? Isn’t English the language of World Commerce? Surely we can use it here in the USA?
and would it be to much to ask to sit down in a restaurant & get and get an English menu? sheeeesh.
I can’t believe what this country has come to. I came over here and learned English in three months during the summer prior to entering 3rd grade at age 7.
If I can learn English in a short time, so can every one else. I assimilated, I learned the language and I wanted to become an AMERICAN.
This is not a case of civil “rights”. If anything, their civil rights would be violated if they were denied learning English. If these families expect their children to become successful in life, they need to learn the language that’s spoken HERE and not elsewhere.
Unless, of course, they actually want to pick strawberries or clean restrooms for the rest of their lives.
Learn English and succeed.
What??? Gertrude (lgm) isn’t explaining to us how non-english speaking students enhance the flavor of her classes and make her job 1000% easier?
*Chirp, chirp*
Americans forget that they have to thank their elected commander-in-chief/POTUS for this. Ofcourse, it is politically incorrect to blame the “sitting president” although he lied about “they are here for a better life” just as he lied about “WMDs in Iraq”.
As they say, in a democracy, people get the government they deserve.
Maybe the teachers and administrators at this school should sue the three hispanic families for the emotional distress and frustration they suffered from having to deal with their non-english speaking kids who are causing the disruptions.
What about the rights of the English speaking students who want to learn and are constantly being disrupted because the teachers have to spend so much time with these problem students? Maybe they should sue the families too.
I just can’t comprehend the lunacy. I dread when my child starts going to school next year. I graduated from high school 20 years ago. I can still remember at least two of my classes where there were just a few students who liked to keep the whole class in turmoil. The rest of us suffered because the teacher spent the entire class just trying to deal with these few discipline problems. I guess I shouldn’t complain, though, at least they were speaking English while they were disrupting the class.
As for the Catholics…hhhmmmmm, this could be interesting. Deep pockets.
I wonder if Kansas Catholics are liberals.
Can language really be RACIST? Not according to laraza ( THE RACE) but in real life? Not according to MeCha ( land-grabbing terrorists from Mexico) but in the real world?
Can you imagine suing a school in Mexico for speaking Spanish?
I could not agree with you more. My parents were Hungarian too! Small world
ON another quick topic, the USA is leading in medals at the Olympics.
Just saying.
Thank you shooter:
That puts it all into the correct perspective!
We need to start suing ALL organizations and people who are violating the rights of our law abiding LEGAL residents (citizens and others). It is OUR rights that are constantly being violated! Time to speak up and learn to shout “NO, NOT IN MY COUNTRY, GO HOME!”
My parents came to the United States when I was 2 years old with just $100 in their pockets (legally I may add). So naturally, when I began Elementary school, my English speaking skills were very poor. Those racist teachers made me learn English and as a result, I was able understand the class lectures over time and graduate from high school and move on to a university and land a terrific job after graduating. In retrospect, I should have filed a lawsuit with my school district for the cruel treatment towards me.
I admit, the English language has never been my strongest skill. But if I had never been forced to learn th English language, I would definitely not have had the same fortune in life as I do now.
I used to work with a lady from Korea who was denied enrollment in a local college because she didn’t pass an English proficiency test. Her English was not that bad either. I didn’t have trouble understanding her. What’s the difference between that and what this school is doing? I guess it’s just a matter of time before they get sued over that test too.
And just wait til these nuts find out that every poker room in America has a rule that English only can be spoken at the tables. Even the online poker sites have the same rule for the “chat box” and they have players from all over the world.
Wow, you managed to tie in illegal immigration, POTUS, iraq, AND nuclear weapons into a discussion about language.
I’m just not seeing it.
Unless this is a madrassa.
I was watching a show on the Food Channel last week, and it was showing a Chinatown section of a South American city. You know what the person (of Chinese descent) spoke? Portugese.
Of course.
i am a teacher in kansas[public school]
our district spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to accomadate ELL students…money that should be used to educate children of RESIDENTS not illegal aliens.. i can’t tell you how many students i have had in my classes who have zero english skills yet i am susposed to EDUCATE them!!
How brilliant would it be if the judiciary has one of those rare moments when it gets something right and kicks this stupid case to the curb? Let it get appealed all the way to SCOTUS and let Justice Scalia and four of his colleagues have a crack at this.
If you don’t like English, please go somewhere where it’s not spoken. My grandfather emigrated from Italy and learned English so well that he all but forgot Italian. When I wanted to learn Italian (because I was going to Italy, imagine that), I had to take a course. Assimilate or get out.
Heh.
As a Catholic (and a Conservative), I’d like to point out that I favor immigration to this country. As the Pope says, America has always been a country of hope.
However. Amnesty is crap. Illegal immigration is just that; illegal. We cannot close ourselves off from the world, no matter how tempting it might be at times, but we are far too open at the moment.
We must be able to maintain ourselves before we can help others.
Ulthwithian, I completely agree with you. Also a conservative Catholic, I firmly support LEGAL immigration. My Catholic high school religion teacher liked to make us watch movies about poverty in rural Mexico and talk about how the eeevvviiilll USA wasn’t helping. I understand the abject poverty there, but we’re not doing anyone any favors when we leave our borders open to potential terrorists.
sadly you are correct…it’s not just Texas or Mexifornia either…I’m hearing more and more in Oklahoma and we have HB 1804 sort of in force…
I love it. This is perfect. The push to make English our official language is becoming irresistible and then who will be losing out, well all those loony tunes pushing for diversity!
