The pointless Rick Warren presidential forum
Just received via email:
CNN to air Saddleback Presidential Forum hosted by Pastor Rick Warren: Saturday, August 16, 8:00PM – 10:00PM (ET)
For the first time since winning their parties respective nominations, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will both appear during the high-definition CNN broadcast of the Saddleback Civil Forum on Leadership and Compassion. The candidates will speak separately with the forum’s host, pastor and author Dr. Rick Warren, and will discuss issues including compassion, faith, values and leadership.
Both candidates will uh and um and blather their way incoherently with vague platitudes about religion throughout this two-hour event.
Gregg Jackson has 15 questions Warren should ask the candidates.
Don’t expect any of them to be asked, though.
According to a recent NY Times article, Mr. Warren was quoted as saying:
“Since I’m their friend, I’m not going to give them any gotcha questions,” Mr. Warren said, adding that a typical query would be, “What’s the most difficult decision you’ve had to make, and how did you make it?”
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

It’s not pointless, it makes Rick Warren more influential. It’s a perfect commercial for Rick Warren. He’ll probably sell a lot more books. Pointless? I think not.
oh yeah. . . FIRST! YAY:) Welcome newbies.
Rick Warren?………. time to sleep ..perchance to snore……
I will be trimming my toe nails Saturday from 8-10. It sure will be more interesting than that zoo listening to the forum.
L
I got tougher questions when I interviewed to be a secretary…
Yes because injecting religion into politics has been working so well lately.
Oh, I forgot. We’re a nation made entirely of nutcase fundies…
Rick Warren wrote arguably the most popular, modern book ever (30 million copies in English) but let’s listen to guys like Pat Robertson who make such rational statements as “9/11 was God’s punishment for homosexuality” (paraphrasing).
yeah…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz… is right.
He has positioned himself to increase his own influence as has been stated above. (#1)
That’s all he ever does.
I wouldn’t be him for ANYTHING
He is responsible for the misguidance of many, and now he will pervert the “purpose” of political debate by bringing it into a sphere where it has little relevance…..touchy/feely land….
sigh……..
Glad this is during lunch, since this wont take long
And again…i’m not a supporter of any religion. so here we go.
It must steam you that there’s god everywhere…in the 10 commandments in courtrooms, the In God We Trust on every piece of money you’ve ever touched…and every other judeo-christian reference we have in our culture…ya know, because it was founded on those principles?
and Pat Robertson? OMG’z please. We use him for a punchline here. He’s the worst reference you can make. He’s a clown.
While i agree that religion has its place, you’re being shrill for the sake of being heard.
Now be quiet and go back to reading Pelosi’s book. I know you’ve got at least 1 of the 2 copies she’s sold this week.
Oh. So, it’s like a rerun of the Democrats’ primary debates for Obama?
Are the tough questions not being asked because Rick Warren doesn’t want to ask them….or because that was a pre-condition to having CNN (aka the Obamamessiah cheering squad) broadcast it?
I can undertand, with the economy under duress, and a world that is unravelling, security wise, why we wouldn’t want to see how a prospective President would react under pressure….after all, that wouldn’t help MO’s children.
Felt compelled to fix that.
Evangelicals were completely sold out by the Republican party. Why would they continue to inject their faith into politics?
Go ahead and vote your faith if you wish but why trust that some politician (who will say anything for a vote) actually has the same belief system as you?
I understand that your faith guides your voting principles. My belief system guides mine. But I certainly wouldn’t trust any candidate to honestly have the same beliefs that I do. How bad could things possibly get if ALL religious figures stopped talking politics at church and in the media?
There are other nations that would be glad to have you, or maybe not. The Chinese don’t like “fundies” either. You would probably fit right in there, or North Korea. Don’t fight so hard with this. We’ll miss you, but we will learn to live without you.
If i voted my faith though…I’d vote myself into office.

The first Obama ad appears on the MSM networks with video of his many insightful answers to the softball questions from Rick Warren …

I’ve got no interest in that book at all. I know you’re joking but anyways…
It doesn’t steam me that there is religion around me. I was raised Catholic and believe in God, etc. I find wonderful things in all religions. I really don’t care if a judge wants to put the ten commandments in his courtroom.
I just don’t understand why anyone would trust a politician when he says he’s a devout Catholic, Protestant, whatever. Frankly I don’t care because I don’t look at issues through a religious lense.
So Pat Robertson is a punchline here? News to me…
These 15 questions are precisely the type of questions that SHOULD be asked by a pastor.
Rick Warren calling himself a “friend” to these candidates is curious to me. In what way are they friends, and why? This forum is going to be a snoozer, I agree, but OK, now I’ve got a few questions I’d like to ask Rick Warren.
good. if you dont use that lense, then we’re on the same footing.
To address it directly…i dont know how, or even if, people trust politicians anymore. At least career ones. You and i could most likely agree that politicians pander to religions folks for the same reason they pander to everyone else:
Votes.
I would point out an example of republican primaries. One candidate was a Mormon. He was attacked as a result of it, from all kinds of angles (not just liberals either). who cares if he’s mormon? But his opponents ate that up.
Or the obama angle on islam…use that example. In that case though, i think people have a little more leeway in examining someone in that respect…there’s alot of negative sentiment in the US for muslims..and their lack of denoucement by and large of extremist along doesnt help unfortunately. Even if religion is never supposed to be used as a marker for who wins the Oval Office, the fact is that it is.
To add to that, religion typically points out where a person’s moral compass points. not saying they subscribe to it 100%, but…thats where it goes.
Didn’t mean to be rough…but i like testing new people
And yeah, Robertson is an @$$clown. Why people even listen to that moron is beyond me.
Obama will appreciate any forum that refuses to ask any real questions other than how he feels about things. Unfortunately, McCain has to debate Obama wherever he can get a debate and cannot pass up on any joint forum. Too bad Obama keeps skippng events where vets can ask him questions.
I’d say wake me when this is over but I would miss the Angel’s winning the world series.
So, I guess that a book about the pointless forum hosted by Warren could be titled “The Purpose Driven Presidential Forum.” The ultimate “purpose,” of course, being to show Rick the money!
So Rick Warren promises to not ask any tough questions? How lame.
How about following in the path of people like John the Baptist? You know, the guy that openly rebuked Herod by pointing out “It is not lawful for you to have” your brother’s wife, even though it led to him being thrown in jail and being beheaded?
Obama & McCain have done things and supported things for which they should be grilled.
If you were OUR friend, Mr. Warren, you would ask hard questions of anyone who seeks to be our President. Do you think they are capable of running the country but not capable of handling your “gotcha questions”? How absurd! Why would you want to help them deceive us about their ability to lead?
And why are people, who refuse to answer hard questions, running for president in the first place? If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the spotlight!
Sorry to break it to ya, AJ. My Cubs are finally going to do it.
no global warming as hell is freezing over
aj … you coming to AZ to see a world series game? …
Sorry there John Ansell …
… no way …
Not sure who this Warren guy is, but it is nice to know that there will be a forum on the Chicken Noodle Network.
Too bad it will not be the two of them dualing it out…with sharpened sticks or something…
if you have the seats dl, you bet!
I’ll buy the dog’s.
Abstractmind, I know you don’t believe in God, but I still pray for you.
If Rick Warren isn’t going to ask “gotcha” questions, then what exactly is his purpose? I had to answer such questions for every job I had. These two men are vying for the most important job in the world. They need to answer each and every “gotcha” question we can think of to prove they’re qualified.
I can already tell, Barack HUSSEIN Obama isn’t qualified.
John, two words… “the goat” lmao
besides what would cubbie fans do if they won?
and i’m ok with that
I can use all the help i can get sometimes
After that the Reverand Doctor ArizonaNeanderthal will host a JohnnyMac-His MessiahShip Presidential Forum. Contributions may be left at the front door of Ted’s Tavern and Fellowship/Meeting Hall.
Pastor Rick Warren, Reverand Wright, Reverand Jesse Jackson. I don’t think so. I wonder how much these exalted men read their Bible. Peter, Paul, John and the Prophets did not give themselves fine titles, they sought humility, although being mere men they often failed. Michael, Pastor of Grace….
Pastor Rick Warren should get to the business of saving men’s souls and the rest will take care of itself. If he deals with Obama at all he denigrates the Church for Obama does indeed deny the Diety of Christ.
There are Christian issues the Church must challenge–abortion, homosexual marriage, adoption and such. But Pastor Rick Warren best be sure he is not yolking himself to anti-Christ people and issues, regardless of book sales.
Contributions may be left at the front door of Ted’s Tavern and Fellowship/Meeting Hall. Book signing to follow “Yes Indeed I do Know Everything and That Is Why They Call Me Mr. Know It all” by The Reverand Doctor ArizonaNeanderthal.
No “Gotcha Questions”
There goes immigration answers
(yawn) Let’s see watch softball.
Obama: Baseball, been berry berry good to me!
McCain: Keep your eye on de ball!
“Since I’m their friend, I’m not going to give them any gotcha questions,” Mr. Warren said, adding that a typical query would be, “What’s the most difficult decision you’ve had to make, and how did you make it?”
Translation:
I don’t know which of them will win, so I’m covering my bases.
I suspect many things are..
To Rick – if you aren’t going to ask them hard questions the what is the Purpose of this forum?
I want to know about immigration, Race relations, Abortion, etc….
And if BHO was actually born in the USA?
aj …
they’d probably start another Chicago Fire … but they couldn’t blame Mrs. O’Leary’s cow for this one …
It saddens me to think that a prominent preacher “so called” of the Gospel would rub shoulders with the prospective leaders of our time and then agree not to ask hard questions. The ONLY conclusion I can come to is that he is doing this, not for our country, not for the Lord Jesus, but for his own ratings and his own pocket book. Sounds like a hireling to me.
all of you are wussies. christianity is friggin awesome. we are all sinners. but for atheists it doesn’t matter. just keep doing whatever you want, don’t get caught. cuz this lame society still has morals about children & marriage & personal responsibility. christians fall in sin & pride, that is the point of this religion, the imperfection. atheists think christians preach prefection. we don’t. we preach hope to imperfection. using guilt, an all knowing god (as in, even if you get away with something, there’s a gnawing feeling within that you shouldn’t have). atheists are selfish opportunists with no guilt. after all, there’s no god to concern yourself with. i prefer not hanging out with atheists, i find them so freaking egotistical and elistist. JUST LIKE CHRISTIANS (humans) only with christians, there’s a humility & guilt to it. atheists are just so strident.
Obama: Whether to write my second autobiographical book at the age of 45.
Obama: Whether to visit the injured Soldiers in Germany or workout…
I really don’t care to much for Rick Warren. He seems more concerned with administering to the world and politicians than his own congregation. This is why his holding an evangelical townhall for McCain and Obummer will be yet another self-promoting infomercial for Warren.
There are so many atheists and “humanists” out there with a negative view of “fundamentalists” that this evangelical forum will not help. I’m not overly religious and I don’t get a good feeling from this event. Any religious leader who says they’re a friend of any poliician has lost perspective over both their place in the greater scheme of things and why being pals with politicians is a big mistake.
If you guys want to know what kind of questions will be asked, just go check out who is partnering with Rick Warren for this forum.
warren doesn’t need more money. he’s got BAZILLIONS. you should check out their church. it’s like a friggin mall. there’s an articifial stream & ponds running through it! its not about the money. it’s about influence without stridency. warren doesn’t need to ask tough questions cuz he’s too friggin happy. which is a sin…:), but we’ll see. if you all have such allegations of warren & his motivations then as thought provoking malkinites you better be watching it and making a real assessement. btw i’m not a follower of warren. i’m a fallen catholic who has found christianity the least strident of all major beliefs: islam, atheism, liberalism, bloggism, universitaism, communism, socialism, etcism.
“etcism” heh nice.
Michelle — Imagine how the MSM (and maybe you) would howl if McCain had passed up the chance to “debate” with The Messiah. Even if it is a softball forum, it’s the only way he can get Osama Obama on the same stage, aside from the three scheduled debates.
And Obama has only promised to participate in those. We know what his promises are worth.
Can’t you ease up on the MDS snarkiness? I would think even you would be concerned with the situation in Georgia (nation, not state) and could see that McCain is the only candidate who has offered rational and believable statements.
Instead, you’re aiming at the soft targets. I expect better of you.
HAHA! The pointless Rick Warren forum! That is so funny because you have the most pointless forum at all, you patsies. I hope Michelle still has enough money to feed you. She’s not doing much else for cash these days
.
I am a member of a megachurch. A few months ago, our church was contacted by a national network (don’t know which one) regarding hosting a presidential forum.
In spite of the fact that it would have been a tremendous opportunity for our church to receive national exposure, our leadership declined based on the following:
1. Although our mission statement says we will be “a conscience in the community” and the church has taken stands on various issues, hosting the forum would not advance the Gospel in any way.
2. There was no assurance about input on questions or how audience members would be chosen.
3. There was concern on the part of church leadership that one candidate or the other may decide not to participate.
At the time, I thought this was sound reasoning and a good decision. Now, I’m even more convinced.
Listen very carefully and see if Rick Warren can be accused of being a Christian after this “forum”. If he mentions the name of Jesus once I’ll be surprised.
Maybe he should have James Dobson as a guest panelist – he’s not their friend and will ask the hard questions.
good that that wasnt directed at me
Welcome to the patsies, mate
McCAIN: REMAINING TIED UP IN THE HAINOI HILTON AS OPPOSED TO TURNING MY BUDDIES OVER TO THE COMMIES IN EXCHANGE FOR A FREE TRIP HOME.
OBAMA: I DON’T MAKE DECISIONS.
The answer to that question could very well impact my vote. /sarc
If you’re not going grill them about the state of things, why waste the air time? Oh wait, it’s on CNN so no one’s watching anyway. I think the weather channel has a bigger audience.
Neither one has won their party’s nomination.
Both are still “presumptive” nominees.
Given what’s being exposed about Barry’s photoshopped Certificate of Live Birth, I think the PUMA crowd may actually succeed in getting Hillary nominated.
And the John Edwards revelations just might have John McCain sweating…
The way that John McCain answered the questions about Vicki Iseman reminded me of Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton said, “I did not have sex with that woman”, but then later was forced (by the blue dress DNA evidence) to admit that, “I did have a relationship that was inappropriate”.
McCain said that he and Vicki Iseman did not have a “romantic” relationship. I’m sure that if asked the same question, without any other convicting evidence, Eliot Spitzer would have responded that he and “Kristen” did not have a “romantic” relationship.
No one ever asked McCain if his relationship was “inappropriate”. McCain is parsing words as well as Bill Clinton ever did. If we don’t ask him now if his relationship with Vicki was “inappropriate”, the Democrats may use it to their advantage in October.
If Hillary is successful in getting the Democrat nomination, count on this being her “October surprise” for McCain. At least some of McCain’s flights on Paxson’s plane were alone with Vicki, with no one else on board except the pilots. But move along, there’s nothing to see here…
It would be the sweetest of revenge for Hillary Clinton. Win the Presidency and take down a man who once voted against her and her husband in the impeachment trial.
But, it is not a “debate”. They won’t even be on stage or, even, in the same room at the same time. It’s an individual forum for each candidate.
Despite my honest and repeated efforts this unfortunate sentiment is repeated ad infinitum on this forum.
I am an atheist. I also believe that human beings have an evolved empathy that is also present in many other animals.
I don’t cheat on my taxes and I don’t lie or manipulate without remorse whether or not I can get away with it.
It’s not because I am worried I’ll get caught and it’s certainly not because of some nagging feeling in the back of my head about “God.”
It just has to do with being a decent caring human being that accepts and understands that human beings aren’t inherently “evil” as some like to believe. Being “good” makes me “feel” “good” about myself, if that is selfish, then fine, I’m going to “hell.” Also, please no arm-chair philosophic nonsense about how this sentiment is basically “selfish,” the same could be said about the idea that “reward” awaits in heaven.
Regardless, how do any of you know that the Amish aren’t right? Maybe we are all going to hell because we spend too much time on the computer *smile*.
Ref. the article, I agree with EQ in #5.
You know who’d I like to hear question the candidates? Oh you don’t? Nevermind then…
NO NO NO! I have a right to be HEARD! I want to hear them questioned by the Corpse of Ronald Reagan!
Actually, think about running the Corpse of Ronald Reagan in place of McCain. Just imagine some kind of “Weekend at Bernies” routine. Could be a winner.
I’m betting that Rick’s questions have been passed along to the candidates…
BHO’s handlers are loading the teleprompter feeds as we speak…
Okay. If my link got an edit yesterday, surely this calls for something. KevoTrons posts on this thread and others have gone beyond even crude humor.
He’s just more justification for having the opposite point of view
Crude humor for the humorless. Truly a terrible blog you folks have here. Absolutely horrible in every way. Malkin must be proud.

Ah, I see one of the new trolls has come out from under the bridge.
No. Anything is fuel for an opposite point of view with you people. It’s like you thrive on watching your way of life get flushed. It’s kindove funny actually… no wait, it’s HILARIOUS.
And funny enough, it’s on MALKINS website of all places.
Epic fail.
If you think this forum is pointless, why did you sign up? Only one day, and you have made a complete ass of yourself.

I agree, but unfortunately this will not be the time or the place for this. I saw Warren interviewed. While McCain is answering these softball ludicrous questions, Obama will be off stage in a “cone of silence” (Warren’s words exactly), so that he cannot hear how McCain answers, and vice versa. They will not share the stage with one another, except for maybe the opening pleasantries.
Snoozer is right.
Perhaps we can clone Reagan?
Maybe the MSM and Democratic Party trolls would howl. I imagine MM and most conservatives would be pleased if Senator McCain so No thank you to Mr. Warren’s invitation. We having been waiting years for Johnny Mac to say or do something unstupid.
And we still are -sigh.
compassion: with other people’s money
Faith: “God Damn America”? Diety of Christ?
values: snarkisms?

bring up Michelle Hussein Obama’s “He will make make you go where you do not want to go”
She was quoting Jesus to Peter, but I do not know if there is a Koronic equivelant to that.
Perhaps Mr. Warren can ask about HisMessiahShip’s mohammedan father, step-father and school in Indonesia.
Give themselves nice titles don’t they? I think they have Jesus Christ confused with Emmanuel Kant.
You know, there is one possibility that we have not considered, which is that Rick Warren is just pretending he’ll ask innocuous questions but will REALLY get to the meat of it when the candidates are already there and cannot beg off.
Maybe? We can hope, can’t we!
I AM VOTING FOR WALNUTS MCCAIN BECAUSE HE IS A FAMILY MAN AND KNOWS GEOGRAPHY AND STUFF.
P.S. Do you think KevoTron lost a bet to lgm and so has to play among us today to make even lgm look good?
BTW KevoTron, when you get banned for your comments (which is likely exactly what you’re aiming for), I bet you’re going to bleat to all your leftie buddies how you were banned because we didn’t agree with your views. The fact is you’re not even participating in the discussion, you’re just making unrelated ad hominem attacks. What you’re doing is known as trolling, but I bet you won’t tell your buddies that, will you, you big hero..
Good post zero. I’m sort of an agnostic/deist, but it is guys like hollywood who drive some atheists to militancy.
And, might I add that KevoTron is making lgm look like a rational poster looking for rational discourse. That takes some doing but KevoTron seems to be up for the challenge.
I’d bank there’s something like that going on somewhere. He doesnt really have much else to say, i think he blew what little brains he had on another post earlier that was semi-coherant. its been downhill ever since.
You waited all this time to register and this is the best you have? How long have you known how terrible it was? I am guessing you are like most and spent a great deal of time waiting for your chance.
If it is so bad, self banning is in order. Buh-bye! DLTDHYOTWO
ATHIESTS BRING WAR, unlike religion, which has never ever ever started a fight at all with anyone because they would not want to anger teh Jeebus, of course.
actually it’s pretty amazing I didn’t know jackasses could type.
It’s true, but their keyboards are six feet wide because the keys are REAAAAALLLLY Big. Evidently they don’t have “spell check”, though. Too bad.
KevoTron is a child molester. I think he’d appreciate this comment, since he’s so adept at making completely unfounded and unsupported remarks.
Kevo, are you sure you’re not lgm?
Big sale on Truck Nutz.
yeah vic, and getting down his mommy’s stairs must be a beyatch. hee haw, hee haw.

Silly, ignorant KevoTron.
You’re still here? Tell us steve456, how did you get back in?
HA, aj, good one. Say….this is fun.
Soap,
I was going to ask where the trolls went until I got to your missive with Kevo Tron. Is he a new one that got here after MM opened the gates again?
You want to see the fastest tapdances in history, get BILLY GRAHAM to ask questions.
I personally think this race is going to boil down to which of the two bozos gets Hillary on his team? You KNOW that’s why Mac Boy is waiting for Obie to pick his running mate. If Obie won’t go there, Mac Boy will. Whoever gets her, wins.
Hide and watch.
Hey KevoTron……
get back on your meds dude. Or better yet…go play outside now…the adults have things to talk about.
OK, back on topic.
I have the impression from Rick Warren and his Purpose Driven Movement that they rarely ask tough questions. Their brand of Christianity is pretty watered down, trying to appeal to people who do not want to face the bitter truths that real Christianity demands they face.
Jesus turned over tables when “religious” salesmen were using His Father’s house to make money in the name of “helping the people to worship God”. Shame on Rick Warren and his money-making schemes.
Kevo you loser; thought I recognized the name. You’ve been here before haven’t you? Real intelligent comments – figures coming from a Detroit RedWings fan. Maybe you should lay off the home brew. How’s the weather in Warren MI btw?
Yeah philly. Good thing all those other “real Christian preachers” down through the years haven’t “used His Father’s house to make money”. Big Oil. Big Pharma. Big Religion.
Dakine:
Yes, thank you. Your support here and in other threads is much appreciated and makes my day. Thanks again.
I am no troll expert but I think he qualifies. I usually keep to bashing lgm. He is my pet troll. I can’t resist when someone – who is invited to post – becomes so rude as to insult Michelle. Disagree with her, as I sometimes do, and that is fine. Bash her and you will get the attention of people here. One thing I liked about Rick, he had less tolerant for this kind of crap and was quick to break out the “buh-bye” bounce!
Rick Warren is an unprincipled, fat, Hawaiian shirt wearing piggish pig-like gospel polluting pig.
That is all.
phillypanda,
How dare you reveal the true teachings when Rick is trying to make a buck?!! How can you be be so inconsiderate and unfeeling. Don’t you have any FEELINGS? That is what counts, not the truth. Jesus would understand feelings, just ask Rick.
I never said that Rick Warren is the ONLY one who uses God and His people to make money. Dakine, do you need a lesson in logic, or reading?
As far as pharm and oil companies go, they do not pretend to teach people about God while making money. Unless you have some sort of religious material from a pharm or oil company that I am not aware of….
phillypanda:
I think that perhaps dakine was making the point (and if not, I’ll make it) that any full-time preacher that accepts some kind of stipend or salary for preaching is guilty on some level of using “God” to make money.
After all, what is an appropriate level of a meager salary? Is there one? Should preaching be something that someone does on the weekend in addition to another job?
Perhaps CNN will inquire as to how much the church members had to pay to watch the event? Let’s hope they do!
Yes, for only $500 per seat you can have a seat in the Church. $2,000 per seat gets you up close. Need to pay for the $2M in Audio/Visual equipment, but it is tax deductible.
To those Church members who cannot afford these bargain prices? Nothing to see here, move along!
So, when should we expect the book “The Purpose Driven Presidency”?
Anything to make a buck… I’ve wondered why people follow this guy, and I think Paul said it best:
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4
