See-Dub’s guide to Islamic fashion
It’s difficult to reconcile modern dress with the demands of a seventh-century religion. This weekend, walking through Georgetown, I saw an attractive young woman wearing a colorful hijab. She also wore a boldly-lettered T-Shirt that advised everyone reading it:
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST
She can dress as she’d like, and I wish her well; I just think it’s an oddly mixed message. (I wonder whether they sell those shirts at Abercrombie and Fitch)?
Speaking of which, on the more radical end of things, here’s another interesting clash between modern, global culture and Islam. Sometimes you’ve got to dress up like a menacing terrorist and pose for the Reuters cameras, but your good keffiyeh’s at the cleaners.
So…you gotta improvise.

Necessity is the mofo of invention. Should a used a Care Bear shirt for additional irony points.
No not a sailor moon T-shirt? Death to the cartoonists!!!
I always thought the photos of Islamic youth celebrating on the streets after 11SEP01 were strange in that a majority of them were wearing US football jerseys and American-branded clothing.
You’re giving me a headache with this one, see-dubya. I’m trying to understand how she can wear that shirt and still believe what she does. I need some asprin.
Did she have a bomb under it?
What is truly bizarre is that the “protester” went through the trouble to keep the licensed image centered over the face.
Was she also wearing a pair of designer sweatpants that said “J U I C Y” across the butt?
Maybe that’s how he sees himself. . .a cartoon fighting for allah.
The Religion of Irony.
“Manga Muslim” has a ring to it.
How does one “live life to the fullest” when one is a second class person by mere fact of gender as ruled by her so called faith? Anti Islamic insult claimed in 5…4….3
True.. but the same can be said for the Christian fundamentalists here in the south who force their women to cover their legs and ankles… keep long hair…have separate male/female church events and keep submissive to the man (it’s in the bible, you see!)
Note – I am talking about “dress codes” here only…well.. female dress codes, as it’s mainly the women that end up suffering….
My first thought when I saw the little picture is, now they’re putting Burkhas on their mules.
It’s a ploy to make us think that these people are harmless. Don’t buy into it unless you want to be a victim of a suicide bombing.
My collie says:
Please past a photo as proof that Christian fundamentalists force women to cover their ankles. I’ll even give you credit for an oddball sect.
lovely equivalence argument. not really the same thing, since i dont remember alot of “honey, you didnt cover your legs, so i’m going to have to honor kill you and throw your corpse in the street” issues happening in the south, which is where i grew up.
But hey, who cares? its just people asking for modesty, right? its not like we’re asking them to cover every square inch of their body, including the face, under threat of death…oh wait, thats right. We’re not.
Yeah, but you know what – if a woman decided to leave that church or wear pants, it’s highly unlikely (read: impossible) that she’d be gang-raped and murdered by her male relatives.
Perspective, sausage. Perspective.
So, do these evil Christian Fundamentalists walk around wearing pop culture tees that espouse lifestyles in direct contradiction to their own?
What south do you live in?
ROFLMAO
That is tooooo funny!
Yes, there are some fundamentalist churches that espouse these views. The difference is that women aren’t honor-killed when they don’t dress to some arbitrary code. They can also leave that church without worring that they’ll get beheaded for doing so.
He lives in “Caricature, AL”. It is a town known for its distinctively Deliverance-like qualities.
He is a math teacher at the local K-12 schoolhouse.
Islam: Multiple wives
Christianity: marriage between one man and one woman
Islam: Hijab, cannot drive let alone work outside of the home
Christianity: Women have no such restrictions.
Islam: Women submit to their husbands
Christianity: Women are to submit to their husbands and likewise (you left this part out) husbands are to submit to their wives.
I have the freedom to wear whatever I want being a Christian and that should entail for many Christian women dressing respectfully. You confuse dressing modestly with being forced to wear and outfit that puts Darth Vader to shame. Nice try. You lose.
AlohaGuy said #12, I thought the same thing when I looked at that picture.
30pcs well said…. and thanks for causing me to smile…..sausage pwnd again
Not in the South in which I was born, raised and still live.
I’m with AG…
From what section of the South do you hail?
Sausage is right in the fact that there are some Protestant, evangelical/fundamentalist Christians who believe women should wear dresses and not cut their hair. It’s called “modesty” and given what passes for fashion in most of pop culture today, it’s refreshing to see women dress in ways that respect their bodies and their dignity.
But there’s a vast difference between this (a fundamentalist woman’s outfit) and this (a burqua clad Muslim woman). You can see her arms, her hands, her face, her hair!
The most noticeable difference that if a fundamentalist woman is raped, the blame lies with the man and the punishment will be directed at the rapist – not the woman. A jury will hear the woman’s testimony without her having to provide four credible male witnesses and she will not be found guilty of adultery and stoned.
And, as I pointed out above, a woman who leaves the church or wears pants will not be ritualistically murdered for bringing “dishonor” to her family.
Then again, I don’t expect sausage to wrap his head around the not-too-subtle differences between women under Islam and women under Christianity. Indeed, some level the charge there’s no difference between a burqua and a chapel veil (mantilla).
There is a point where one gets so open minded, they’ve got no mind left at all.
.
i’m not sure if some really hot girl wearing a vader helmet would be creepy, hott, or creepy hott.
the way they make them cover up, how would they even be able to recognize a virgin? and as poorly as they treat women on earth whats the big deal about having 72 of them? bassackwards dipsticks.
Creepy, just like those “Christian Fundamentalists” that populate Sausage’s village.
You’re right that the subjugation of women doesn’t belong and any modern culture and should have a bright light shown on it by right thinking journalists. Where your analysis falls short, though, is in comparing the practices of a seventh century death cult to those of a religion.
Hey PBoilermaker, I’m sorry I thought that was where Daisy Mae and Daisy Duke live. It’s hard keeping these Southern caricatures straight!
abstract,
For sure that comment right there borders on creepy. But we luv ya anyway.
Huh? It takes a village to raise a sausage? Quick! Someone alert Hillary!
As a lifer from the South, it always amazes me that people from other places, having never spent any time here, know so much about it. When I left Georgia for college in California, I was quickly informed just how backwards, racist, and homophobic I actually was. I had no idea. Thank God the tolerant left never makes assumptions and/or believes in wild caricatures and stereotypes.
I’ve never met people who have more of a crush on minorities than people from Vermont. Sure, they don’t know any black people, but they just knew that I had been oppressing them in the deep South. By the way, most of my family is black. We truly integrate down here.
Good to be in Texas.
We are Southern Baptists. My wife used to be Buddhist, but converted to Christianity.
There are Christian sects where women dress in long dresses and wear no jewelry or makeup. But, I’ve never heard of any being “honor killed” if they were caught doing so. There’s no “Christian modesty police” whipping them if they are caught doing so.
My wife wears shorts and tee shirts. She wears jeans to Church. And no one says anything.
If you want to pretend you know (Christian)scripture, sausage, at least get it right. Women are to submit to their husbands, and husbands are commanded to love their wives.(Eph. 5:22-25)
Thus spake Paul.
What? She’s not part of your harem, abstract?
P.S.
My boots are on standby for another day like yesterday.
Its not creepy unless i dress up like the Emperor
tre,
If libs like sausage don’t have their prejudices… what do they have? Don’t rob him of the one thing that keeps him going… please! For the sake of Michelle O’s kids, man.
Oh, not yet Barry…
not yet.
She’ll join the AbstractDark Side as well…
A few christian sects do require women to wear seriously ugly clothing –like friends or amish. The difference is in islam women are required to wear head to toe black hijabs in a 100 degree heat–that is not fasion–that is a form of torture and a way to control the breeding livestock. Also I never seen an amish girl beeing taken out and beaten with axe handles for showing a wrist or an ancle in public.
Sick and tired of all this” but these evil christian fundamentalists ” bull.
Sausage would like to remind you all that whenever a truly heinous act is committed by a person or group, remember that “Christians” have always done something even more heinous.
Also, it should be noted that the creepiest of all Christians (the pesky-but-quaint “Fundamentalist” terrorist-sects) live “in the South” with Sausage.
My point is that I think the women are getting the best deal…all we have to do is submit. The guys have to do the hard part.
On August 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm,
Especially if you consider what the rest of that scripture says about Christ laying down His life for the church and how husbands should do the same for their wives.
Alright 30.
You’re absitively, posolutely right, Sausage. Every day I hold a gun to my wifes head and force her to wear a thick wool blanket over her head. I finally had a little mercy and allowed her to cut eyeholes in it.
guitarplayer—that’s why I don’t mind sleeping on the wet spot every now & then…!
The true can be said of ANY radical offshoot of a larger organization.
For instance, some legitimate political parties have radical members who vote against restricting the practice of placing newborn babies into supply closets to die of starvation and deprivation.
The larger question is, aside from their limited compounds, where else do you see Southern Christian fundamentalists subjecting women on the comparable scale of global Islam?
Very well stated Warden #29.
I also agree (being from a background of a religion often called “holy rollers”) that the only retribution for choosing to deviate from “accepted” modest dress is a public disapproval, and possibly disassociation if the practice continues.
And, of course, one always has the option to seek a different place of worship without fear of ANY physical harm or harassment (unlike the actions of the Demon-crats when you disagree with their “religion”).
Alright 30.

true s/b same
OOPs! that was #30, NOT #29.
I mentioned that to my wife when she was asking about how Christians treat their wives. Malaysia is an officially Islamic country. I told her that the Bible says:
Ephesians 5:25
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
Thus, I should love her enough to be willing to die to protect her.
In some cases it seems quite easy. A couple was walking in just as I was leaving work the other day, in 90-degree weather. The wife was swathed in fabric from head to foot, walking several paces behind her husband, and carrying their probably 5-year-old son. The husband? Jeans and a short-sleeved shirt emblazoned with the words “Some men are stupid. The rest are bachelors.” You know, just in case the casual observer might miss the misogyny without a witty t-shirt slogan.
I don’t get it – I saw a muslim women the other day wearing a hijab and meanwhile as she goes up the steps from the subway to the street, she’s got the top of a thong coming up over the waste of her pants!
ROFLMAO
I was out with my 2 kids Sunday, at a Ross store, looking at shoes. We turned down one aisle and there were 2 women, fully clad in black Muslim garb, with only their eyes showing (this is in Beaverton, OR). My 3-year-old (we all know how 3yo simply blurt out whatever they observe), with her eyes wide, pointed to them and said, “Mommy…GHOSTS!”
So, your 3-yr old is a racist “Fundamentalist Christian” who intimidates mooslims in public?
Is Oregon in “the South”?
kind of ruins the whole killer look
And part-time banjo player.
Very true. Although, I think there is more to it than just be willing to die for her. I think it’s all about every day putting her needs ahead of your own. I’m no Biblical scholar, but I think the two parts of wives obeying husbands and husbands being willing to die for them all come together in Jesus’ message of self-sacrifce.
Christianity, by and large, is also based on gender inequality. So you may all kindly remove yourselves from that thar high horse.
Depends – does her three-year-old like ethnic food?
Prove it.
You didn’t do anything violent to her for your thoughts did you? BTW, when underwear first caught on (pun intended) it was only brazen hussies who wore them. Modest women apparently (or not) went without.
Christianity has always taught that men and women are different, yes. Men have inherent traits that women will never have (no matter how hard some feminists try to emulate them) and women have inherent traits men will never have (no matter how hard some feminists try to castrate them).
But – in God’s eyes – we’re deserving of equal respect and love.
So nice try, but theology really isn’t your forte.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Jesus said the commandments could be boiled down to “Love God, Love your neighbor as yourself”. Don’t see the gender inequality.
yawn.
Still the equivalence argument. As useless as it is redundant.
Tell me, what’s your opinion on the topic at hand?
I still can’t believe that there are “adults” who think babies can be profiled as “racists” based on food preference.
Seriously, c’mon now.
Hmmmm? Sounds familiar, huh? I wonder if I’ve seen him before, somewhere.
Is that a southern or a western-type caricature now?
Now Barry, lgm has already warned you about posting links to his pic in other threads.
I thought you knew. Christians all talk like Yosemite Sam. Omu is just trying to communicate effectively.
Everyone in “the South” talks that way.
Hmmmm? I guess that was a pre-Hair Club for Men photo. Do you suppose they consider it a success story?
Hey, I’m still slack jawed about something that I saw in
Forwarded Funnies August 4, 2008 called a red neck
tank top. Apparently, even women from Alabama have
to improvise once in a while. She was wearing a pair
of men’s briefs ( heather or denim blue in color),
backwards, with the crotch cut out ( for her neck and
head to fit through). This was a picture of a woman,
in Alabama, leaving one store ( a Wal Mart, I think) and
heading for a flea market. One of my counselees
brought it in to show me.
Enough fun for today. Got to run and pick up the kids.
Have fun, all!
What did you expect from an angry muslim? There was no way he was cutting up his Powerpuff Girls shirt.
BTW, sausage needs to come to South Beach to see all of the fundamentalist women frolicking.
OMG! Gender inequality.. no way!
WAY DUDE. Its inherent in the physical makeup (literal, not additive).
What the left fails to realize is the actual TRUTH of physical, emotional and chemical differences (from bone mass, bone development, hormones, muscle mass and etc). A little physical hack job and changes in external appearance can not, and will not ever change the gender of an individual.
But..back to the topic at hand…:)
Christianity can only be compared to the radical muslims when one remembers the Crusades or our own country’s shame of witch hunts that resulted in burning people alive.
Yes, unfortunately some radical Americans once performed these heinous acts in the name of religion, but have since learned of the greater good of compassion, patience and respect for an individuals right to have their own beliefs as long as they do not harm or interfere with the rights of others.
I have no problem with stopping radicals from harming the innocent even if it means using our military force. As an innocent victim of radical abuse, I can empathize with the victims of radical Islam and do everything within my power to stop them, even if it means bloodshed.
SAUSAGE
It’s a little late, but I have to get into this discussion. Since I’ve lived in the South most of my entire, long life, I’m qualified to ask you this question:
Sugar, have you just completely lost your mind?
LittleMa
The fact that he reads this blog shows he still has enough good sense to try to learn.
Don’t give up on him yet, there’s still hope for him.
Neither can I. But such is the nature of liberalism…
.. And he noticed that you have a real purdy mouth, Aloha Guy..
I think you’ll just have to put him down as a closet Rusty. So far their talking points have been very closely mirrored. Calls himself a “skeptical conservative” and a “Christian” but everything he has spoken on in his short 1 day since joining this blog has proven contrary to that. He also has a really really hard time understanding the whole hate the sin love the sinner part of it. The whole respect but don’t coddle and condone thing flies right over his head. Trying to describe to him that I could show compassion to illegal aliens by (like what my church already does) helping build a food and water shelter a few miles back on the Mexican side of the border for those who have been turned away so they don’t die in the desert is compassionate. But at the same time pushing for legislation that gets more of them deported immediately and for tougher laws on businesses that are using them to avoid paying taxes and breaking the law and pushing for a fence (a real one with guards that are not hand tied by our government’s pandering to Mexico). But hey, he’s only been here a day. Maybe he’ll do better with a little more practice
You show me any other group throughout history where women have risen in society and have shared in education, public life, sciences, etc… to the degree that women have from the Judeo-Christian West.
Any time. Any where.
Ignoramus.
My minor was in Women’s Studies (two majors English and History) and sometimes I have a hard time not yelling at women in hijabs to throw off the chains of their oppressors–it just overcomes me and I have to bite my lip–the worst are the ones totally covered while their husbands and sons barely have shorts and shirts on–in the Middle Tennessee heat and humidity
My fundamentalist Christian relatives show ankles–they just don’t wear overly revealing clothes and a few cut their hair–One of them (dead now) used to be one of those girls that walked on the wings of bi-planes in the 20s/30s
Wow… Not another Star Wars geek?
As for the topic at hand, I am not even going to bother answering any nonsense that suggests treatment of modern Christian women is even remotely akin to treatment of modern Muslim women. Anyone who honestly believes such drivel isn’t worth the time.
