1) In 1972 when the East Germans “womens” swim team won all the golds, everyone knew it was a sham. In the locker rooms, all of the other competitors heard the EG team with their voices deeper than most mens teams! What was the IOC response? Change the rules to only allow 2 swimmers from any one country to compete in the finals. Way to take a stand!
2)If there is a judge or an official, you lose. Judging is just someone’s opinion of your talent. You could perform the most flawless routine ever seen and get a 6.5. The favorite will get the 9.5. This has been going on since the beginning. In the first winter olympics in 1924, an American (formerly from Norway) should have placed 3rd in the ski jump. But… a judge didn’t like his form and marked him down. Can’t have an American winning a “european” medal. Even a former european. Eventually, the IOC did award him with the bronze, just 50 years too late. When Bill Johnson won the gold in the downhill, there was no judge to say, “do it again.” The downhill is one shot, the fastest wins. That’s competition. Because no judge or official can interject their opinion into the outcome.
3) Basically, the Olympics have degenerated into a bad redo of the Monthy Python skit where they are summarizing Proust. At the end the host says, “Well ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think any of our contestants this evening have succeeded in encapsuladng the intricacies of Proust’s masterwork, so I’m going to award the first prize this evening to the girl with the biggest tits.”
I used to be glued to the tv watching the olympics many years ago. The last few games I have watched with waning interest due to doping etc. These games I have not watched anything at all. It’s not an event worth watching when there’s cheating going on, and one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. Shame on the IOC for apparently not even looking into it – that’s just a rubber stamp to go ahead and cheat.
(Sigh!) Next year, Israel will host the world’s third-largest athletic meet, the Maccabee Games. And the media interest in it? Zilch. Not enough world-class athletes, although the games are conducted under the sanction and rules of every applicable international sports federation. Too Jewish? Well, we know the media has a serious problem when Jews refuse to play the role of history’s perennial victims. Yet here are some features that make these games interesting:
1. Since expectations for world records are low, good fellowship and a good time are goals equal to personal bests of the athletes. To facilitate this, athletes, along with coaches, trainers and other support personnel, are housed according to their sport rather than their country. It’s much harder to backstab your opponent if he’s your friendly bunkmate who also passes along his training tips.
2. These games have included sports that were later added by the Olympics (table tennis, judo, softball) or still haven’t been (golf, rugby).
3. Competition is also held in juniors (under 16) and seniors (over 40) categories. Thus, there is a place for little girl gymnastics: in the little girl age bracket.
4. Because of lack of media interest, the games are blessedly noncommercial. This spirit of amateurism and the joy of sports more faithfully upholds the ideals of Baron Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, than the IOC with its wheeling, dealing and corruption.
I agree, the “all look same” comment is really offensive, and not true if you bothered to associate with anyone outside your own little inbred community.
Is the word and the IOC really stupid enough to think that the Chinese Government would not do something like forge the age of a 12 year old if it meant tthey would win a Gold Medal and embarass the rest of the world?
My 10 year old even pointed out the fact that she has lost the same teeth that she has. But it is even deeper than that.
The scoring has been attrotious. When gymnasts who fall off of apparatuses get medals and higher scores than those that have flawless executions, when divers who are completely off and create huge splashes get higher scores thsn those that don’t…and various other thing of that nature…there is something seriously wrong.
There is something seriously corrupted with the judging of events in these Olympics. At the rate that this is going, were it not for the fact that they us clocks, Phelps would be medal-less.
The American Olympic committee should be filing protest after protest every day. The wrestler throwing down his medal in protest is not surprising. I would not be surprised if more athletes in these games did not do it more often.
Even the commentators have commented on the scores being higher than deserved.
While I still will watch and enjoy watching our atletes compete…and compete well and in many cases better than they have been awarded, this Olympics is already proving to be one of if not the most corrupt in history.
State-media story fuels questions on gymnast’s age

I don’t watch this crap because it is a bunch of political BS. It has little to do with sports competition and everything to do with political spank blankets stinking up the whole concept of Olympics, which was really just some greek guy in his underwear running 26 miles and dying or something stupid like that.

You’re American. Whykey?
No, it’s not. Between the ages of about 12 and 16, most girls undergo physical changes that shift their weight lower on the body. This greatly affects moves that require upper body strength. Many a female gymnast has to “relearn” certain moves post puberty because of this weight shift. If you watched the competition, you may have noticed that the Chinese dominated the uneven parallel bars. Not coincidently, that apparatus uses upper body strength almost exclusively. A woman (that is, a female with hips) will have more difficulty with those moves than a prepubescent girl.
These olympics have a good chance of ruining what little reputation the IOC has left for years to come. Not only have they totally caved in to the Chinese, they have decided to try and ignore the major issues both leading up to and during the games. The pollution, the flat out lies about “free” access to journalists, and now a list of potential cheating that seems to grow each day. Way to go IOC.
I’d say it was the 1972 US v. USSR basketball game that did the trick for me. The problems with the Olympics are threefold:
1. You’ll never be able to eliminate nationalism as an influence in the judging;
2. Communist states blatantly cheat by doing things like turning their athletes into walking, talking chemistry experiments and offering up castrated boys with facial hair as “women” — and routinely get away with it; and
3. They’re boring. B-O-R-I-N-G. The isolated instances of the 1980 hockey win, or whats-his-name winning buckets of gold medals in swimming aren’t nearly enough to offset the otherwise soul-sucking quality of these games.
Sorry, Olympics, but there’s pre-season football to see on television. It’s no contest.
Sure the Chinese government sucks and the scores are always off, but you should see some of these athletes and marvel at their skills. After one American had trouble with the balance beam, her tiny teammate rocked the house to help keep them temporarily in contention. The swim relay still boggles my mind. Three American women took all the medals in the fencing (sabre), and one isn’t even in college yet. (Alas one is going to law school to be drained of her humanity.) I mean, it’s ok not to watch, but there’s lots of amazing stuff going on, and plenty to root for no matter how the subjective judging plays out.
We have to be nice to the ChiComms. They are buying our T-bills to keep our Congress spending more than we have, and we are buying their cheap goods that murder dogs and cats made with slave labor.

IMHO, there should be no “judged” events in the Olympics.
Only events that have obvious results.
For example, it’s quite easy to determine who was the fastest, strongest, who threw it the furthest, who scored the most points, etc.
That would eliminate, at least, the crazy biased judging.
Also, I can imagine Milo of Croton, were he alive now, exclaiming, “They won an Olympic gold medal for twirling around with a baton on a mat? WTF? I’d break them with my pinky finger!”
Their smaller, lighter size is a HUGE advantage. Our girls stepped out of bounds several times during the floor exercise, the Chinese girls never got close because they’re so much smaller, they had room to spare.
I remember when Olga Corbett turned 16/17 and all of a sudden had curves. She just couldn’t compete anymore (they didn’t have the 16 year minimum back then)
We watch to see Michael Phelps kick everyone’s butt!
My favorite part of Beijing is the smog.
The Olympics has been a sham for years – why the hysteria now? Only the US and the UK has to play by the “rules”. For every other nation … NOT SO MUCH.

Is anyone surprised? This Olympics was going to be a showcase of China no matter how much they cheat. I knew this when they were “awarded” the Olympics 8 years ago.
Just remember who would get the gold if the ioc actually acted. This would mean doing something to benefit the USA.
Are the rules different for individual competition than they are for team competition? NBC just presented one of the chinese gymnasts as age “15″.
They only have to turn 16 during the calendar year of the of the olympics. They don’t have to actually be 16 by the start of the olympics. (Not that I think that they are actually 16 though.)
The American Women’s team has a good shot at a medal. Worth watching,
though I prefer to watch my own daughters play the game.

If a 10 or 12 year old can defeat 16 – 20 year olds then go for it kid! If the best in the world is 10, then the best is 10. What kind of sport is this anyway when a 10 or 12 year old can dominate?
Update: our ladies just took gold and silver in the all-around. Take that China!
During the competition, I sat there, crossing my fingers, even pacing through the last exercise when the last three competed. I guess I would not make a good sports parent.
When I looked at the two Chinese gymnasts, I’m still not convinced that those girls are 16. Yes, I know that there are people who look young for their age but I mean these two Chinese girls don’t seem to have experienced puberty yet.
As someone who is often mistaken for younger than 33, it can get pretty annoying. Especially if you don’t want to be confused with the students that you’re trying to teach.
Anything worth winning is worth cheating for. Who gives a damn about Olympics anyways ! Bunch of dped up athletes trying to outcheat each other

EVERY JUDO, GYMNASTIC, DIVING, AND LOTS OF OTHER ARTSY SPORTS ARE JUDGED BY PEOPLE WITH THEIR INDIVIDUAL BIASES. OUR TRACK AND FIELD SPORTS ARE FASTEST, HIGHEST, LONGEST. NO NUANCES. BOXING LOSSES AND WRESTLING LOSSES AS WELL AS GYMNASTICS ETC WHICH RELY UPON JUDGES WHICH HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE BIASED AND THROW MATCHES WILL ALWAYS BE SUSPECT TO CORRUPTION.
Exactly. The sports are great. It really sux that so many have to cheat, but it does make beating the cheaters all the more sweet. About to watch Phelps take his 8th and become something the Chinese can never do fairly…the greatest.
