China busted, IOC shrugs

How many “16″-year-olds do you know who still have baby teeth?!

Crikey.

Jim Hoft follows the trail of the whitewashed ages of the Chinese female gymnasts.

Here’s the response from the International Olympic Committee:

First, this should come as absolutely no surprise. The Chinese treat rules and treaties like toilet paper.

I can’t get the IOC’s response but I assume its some platitudes that go something like this, “Well, it’s OK, because China is a developing nation.” Hmmm… Maybe I am confusing that with the attitude the International “community” takes toward China and pollution; meh, no matter.

In any event, why exactly is there a rule that competitors have to be 18? What’s wrong with allowing a minor who is THAT good the right to compete? Am I missing something?

It’s very hard to enforce the age requirements in Gymnastics. Using underage athletes is a common practice in Communist countries. That the IOC is complicit in this practice is disgusting.

Many people will dismiss the complaints by the US team regarding the age of half the Chinese women’s team as sour grapes. Unfortunately, this goes way beyond sour grapes. Recently, a Chinese athlete had admitted that she was underage when she competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. There were Chinese newspapers reporting that at least one of the Chinese women wasn’t 16 when she competed in a warm-up meet.

What I don’t understand is that if the Chinese really care about transparency and honesty in the Olympics, why don’t they offer up actual proof of eligibility? And I’m not talking passports that can be easily forged. It’s beginning to seem that either a) the IOC is not interested in fairness to satisfy the Chinese or b) they’re that stupid if they think that at least 3 of the Chinese women are 16.

Bela Karoli offered up a suggestion. If the IOC or international gymnastics community isn’t interested in upholdng the age requirement, then just do away with it. That way no one cheats and any female gymnast has a chance at competing.

Even with the underage thing, I watched the finals and the U.S. team beat themselves. Granted the judging was leaning towards the Chinese team, but they wobbled on the beam (one actually fell off) opening the door for the U.S. to win gold, and they had one fall off the beam (not that I’m critizing, because I couldn’t walk that beam much less do a back flip), but then two of the three stepped out of bounds on the floor. They had an opening and didn’t follow through.

Besides, if the Chinese kids are only 13 or 14 (or younger) and they are beating kids that are in their late teens, it’s even more impressive. IMHO

Aside from the fact that they are taken from their homes at 2 or 3 years old, and spend every waking moment training. And as soon as as they are too old to compete, they and their families are kicked to the curb.

If this competition was a skirmish the Americans would have kicked Chinese posterior, but the world would still award the win to the Chinese for style points if nothing else.

We need to stop shivering in the face of Chinese aggression and consider why China isn’t already being militarily aggressive against us. China may be able to field a million troops in short order but our technology gives us the ability to kill a million of them just as fast.

They use these kids at that young age because it’s all about strngth-to-weight ratio. If an athlete is carring an extra 20 or 30lbs but is no stronger relative to their weight than the competetion, it’s obvious who will be able to jump higher and flip faster. If the ChiComs disregard the rules, they have a huge advantage. The Romanians and Russians did the same in the ’70s and ’80s.

    Goldwater:

It should tell you something about China fighting a war.

Bingo. I imagine that the combat conduct of the ChiComs would rival that of the Russians, but in any event, make the Islamos seem like boy scouts.

China certainly seems to be a society that believes exclusively that “the ends justifies the means.”

At the risk of a threadjack – I’ve always wondered how China went from protecting our pilots after Doolittle’s Raid in 1942 to storming into N. Korea to attack our troops in 1950.

I get the feeling that a liberal, FDR State Department investment in Mao’s ‘Cultural Revolution’ played a major role in this.

I recognize that this is extreme stuff, but if I was Truman, I would have flattened every Chinese city when they poured over one million troops into N. Korea to try to annihilate US Forces.

That was an unacceptable action on China’s part, and it has been downhill ever since.

It’s the difference between a friendly Kuomintang government and the Maoist communist revolutionaries that siezed control after WWII.

How many “16″-year-olds do you know who still have baby teeth?!

I can honestly say I did know one. She was the niece of my friend. She was staying with his family because of trouble in her home. One summer weekend visit, I noticed she had two front teeth missing. I asked who hit her then both he and his wife had a mixture of giggles and shock and said to me that Stephanie still had her baby teeth! Steph continued to lose more during that summer. Fortunately she had a wicked sense of humor by demanding the money plus interest that was owed to her by the tooth fairy.

Ten years later with two kids of her own, we still talk about that toothless summer.

So now in an effort to CONTROL everything the outside world sees in China, the chinese are exposing who they really are. One always has to be aware of the unintended consequences. These control freaks may not like what the world learns about them.

Is it any wonder that the Chinese seem to only win in the subjective competitions?

Seems like the Chinese government and the Obama administration will get along well enough, though. After all they do share the same Marxist philosophies, and both are great at scrubbing digital information.

It’s embarrassing watching much of NBC’s coverage of these Olympics, constantly spinning for the Chinese.

I have been flipping between NBC and CBC, and the Canadiens are much better. They have better analysts during the events, and their reporting is decidedly pro-Canada while being very congradulatory towards American (and other) medal winners.

What suprised me most was seeing some CBC reports very critical of China – one on the horrible air quality and another on the ticket scandal resulting in so many empty seats.

We should tread lightly and speak softly when talking about the wonderful Chinese…” You cheat, you lose. What’s the issue? Nothing personal. Nothing political. So, someone tell me again why didn’t we completely boycott these games?
Just wait and see, someone will accuse Phelps of cheating here pretty soon. It wouldn’t be the first time an international sports organization acted in a shady manner (Graeme Obree anyone? Lance Armstrong?)

This is all a perfect metaphor for the systemically vile International Olympic Committee, which got all its training from the congenitally spineless mirror-worshipping bureaucrats at the UN.

The Olympics are like politicians and the media, bereft of all credibility.

The mistakes in the team competition are now moot for the individual all-around.

Here is some news on NBC’s coverage:

In a temper tantrum befitting a 2-year-old, Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw his bronze medal to the mat, and walked off the podium. This was after he had to be held back from attacking the judges in a controversial semifinal loss to Italian Andrea Minguzzi. If you just watched MSNBC’s coverage of Greco-Roman wrestling, you would have just seen the story of American Adam Wheeler’s unlikely bronze, and Minguzzi dancing and flipping after winning gold. Abrahamian’s tantrum, along with the upsets of several top wrestlers including Egyptian Karam Gaber and American Dremiel Byers, were not even discussed, much less shown. What gives, NBC?

Another writer has already accused NBC of glossing over China’s problems outside of sports. I see that as a forgiveable sin if it’s their intent to keep sports separate from politics. (Of course, if that was their intent, they shouldn’t have fawned over the Georgian and Russian medalists who were friends.) However, whitewashing what actually happens within the sporting arena is completely unforgiveable. There are good things and bad things that happen in sports, and responsible journalism covers it all.
