Update: L.A. passes illegal alien day laborer mandate

Last week, I noted the most recent open-borders insanity in Los Angeles– a proposed ordinance requiring private retailers to set aside space for illegal alien day laborers. Well, the full city council has gone ahead and passed the rule…unanimously:
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday requiring certain home improvement stores to develop plans for dealing with day laborers who congregate nearby in search of jobs.
The ordinance mandates that proposed big-box stores obtain conditional-use permits, which could then require them to build day-labor centers with shelter, drinking water, bathrooms and trash cans.
Councilman Bernard C. Parks, who first proposed the ordinance four years ago, said that this was just the first phase and that he planned to address existing home improvement stores next. He said the businesses needed to be held accountable for their role in attracting dayworkers.
The vote prompted a standing ovation by dozens of day laborers in the council chambers. The move came after years of debate and negotiations among city leaders, Home Depot officials and dayworker advocates over who should be responsible for public safety and nuisance issues created by workers gathered in parking lots and on sidewalks and street corners.
“This is an important day,” said Councilman Eric Garcetti. “This is an example for the nation.”
Yeah. An example of the continued, bone-headed recklessness of illegal alien sanctuary zealots who continue to subsidize and sponsor systemic undermining of our immigration laws, sovereignty, and security.

OOPS..that should be traitors!
This action.. along with the tireless work of ACORN illegally registering illegal aliens to vote, will buy the local libs lots of votes.
Union groups should organize their members to come and use up all of the space these areas will provide. Let the City Council explain why they are having police cart off citizens yet allowing illegals to loiter around.
idiots…
May I suggest that the area set aside be fenced in to make it easier for ICE to round them up!!!!
This is yet another reason to not ever set foot or spend my money in the State of California.
There ain’t much “we” in Los Angeles.
JamieD.. did that pie chart blow your mind like it did mine?
Wouldn’t it be just ducky if the big box retailers decided that they did not want to do business in LA County and just packed up and moved away? I would buy stock in those companies for standing up to the shallow feeble fraud failures the LA City Council-members be. Arrgh.
Notice everything now with a “Big” in front of it somehow is becoming responsible for paying or caring for the meek, weak, and morbid. (“Big Oil” is responsible for all the sins in the world according to these mental midgets).
Why even “Big MAC” is too. LA Council is or is in process of forbidding the evils of fast food in the poor communities. I just cannot wait to see the preview of the McDonalds soup kitchen opening event in LA.
We do have such “rest stops” for illegal immigrants. They even have shelter, toilets and running water. They just also happen to be called “jails”, but they could include a free trip to the immigrant’s home of origin.
Too bad we’re not using those rest stops.
/sarc
Just a thought related to #97′s point about votes.
How many of California’s 55 electoral votes are fraudulent? How many ILLEGALS (shouting for the libs to hear through their “undocumented” BS) are influencing our countries elections?
California and all of the sanctuary cities need to be investigated and ALL federal money stopped and all officials responsible jailed. HELLO Government of “the people”? The people DEMAND that you protect our voting system and borders! Your First and Foremost duty! Hello??????
Someone should produce a T-Shirt that says “Where is MY government?”
ROB:
Absolutely!
Hey at least I.C.E. will know where to conduct raids!
Look at the bright side.
It’s time for the american citizens to standup we have the power to shut the government down just by not showing up to work one day and not consume anything and marching on DC!
But, unfortunately we have become sheep and will continue to bitch about here and then just follow the rest of the cattle that’s the reality!
So because these ILLEGAL aliens gather outside a business, that business is responsible for taking care of them??? And I suppose the next plan is to then prosecute the businesses for supporting criminals. Nice little scam.
The businesses will write it off their taxes, and guess who will be taking up the slack. LEGAL AMERICAN TAXPAYERS. Again.
So if I and a bunch of friends congregate outside, oh I don’t know, the home of these idiot politicians, then they are going to supply me with a toilet, water, shelter etc? If not, why not – or do I have to be an illegal f***ing alien too??
Wow what a way to create resentment and foster racism.
LOS ANGELES YOU SUCK.

Today, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance requiring certain celebrities to develop plans for dealing with paparazzi who congregate nearby in search of photo-ops.
In other news, 5 South L.A. residents were overcome by carbo-shock after consuming super-sized Jumbo Jack combo meals.
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry said in a statement, “We are shocked and stunned by this flagrant disregard for public health. Jack-In-The-Box should know better than to serve poor, fat, black people hamburgers, shakes and fries. I and my fellow city council members plan to take immediate legal action against Mr. Jack.”
As per usual, Mayor ‘Where In The World Is” Villaraigosa was unavailable for comment.

They not only do EVERY job Citizens do, they also start their own business, without getting permits, paying taxes to their “employees”, paying taxes PERIOD!.
I see (in Texas) loads of different vehicles with hand painted signs on them advertising every type of business imaginable. Some are in Spanish, some are on cars with ladders on top of them, etc. etc.
I don’t have proof, but if you don’t even bother to spend the money to make a good business appearance, then you probably are not paying workman’s comp or taxes. IMHO
La ciudad de Los Angeles es muy estupida.
And the b@stards don’t even have the time to vote for Jamiel’s law. Sick.
There is an easy way to combat this problem. Have the IRS or state revenue department follow any person picking up one of these people. After they stop and are put to work have the tax terrorists ask for the employees employmnet record. Impose large fines for all employers who don’t have the proper paperwork. You could pair up an IRS agent and an ICE agent.
As a side note here in Arizona I renewed my professional license recently. I had to dig out my passport and go downtown to the licensing board and prove to them I am a citizen. What a pain that was and an afternoon I shall never get back. The government office was run like the DMV on ludes.
I would encourage Home Depot to do this, but ALSO invite to have a permanent ICE agent stationed there.
I saw some of them play cards and gamble, does that mean we have to built a casino for them to entertain too ?
I don’t get why you people think anybody is going to do anything about this. Here in Southern Califonia Mexicans ARE the customers that are IN Home Depot. Why piss off the future? Mexicans are what Home Depot is selling to and will be selling to in all the rest of the states in the coming years… the Mexicans are the inheritors and white people are no longer important.
What’s so incredible to me is that they aren’t even saying that the day workers are congregating AT the big box stores, only nearby. So now the stores have to build a shelter so that they will be drawn to their property. That’s just lovely. Let’s just make it the problem of the Lowe’s or Home Depot, then the rest of us won’t have to worry about it. How liberal of them.
Minorities are already the majority in a number of cities and counties across the USA, so shouldn’t the legal, taxpaying (ex)majority now receive all sorts of special advantages over the illegal minorities? If not, why not?
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

When in the HELL did anybody think THIS was a good idea????????
Rob 116, I went to a boxing match awhile back at the Home Depot Center. My friends and I had just gotten our beers and sat down having some small talk and not really paying attention. Then they started to play the national anthem. We stood in honor. Well afterward, a group of about 6-7 Latinos were shouting at us for sitting during the Mexican National Anthem. You should have heard how bad we disrespected them and their anthem.
Showtime almost had an extra fight to show.
Absolute insanity. What is this country stand for anymore? The federal government must take control of this. California is going to go bankrupt. Hospitals are shutting down because of the high cost of illegals. What does governor Arnold have to say? What will the city council find next for the private sector to pay for?
Councilman Garcetti said it was an example for the nation. What nation? Mexico.
Sorry had to correct that.
The same thing happened to the Roman Empire. The Slaves (illegal Aliens)
took all the work from the citizens.
When Caesar tried to change it the Roman Senate killed him.
P.S. Every great empire sooner or later collapses. Ours too will end some day.
the city council is smart enough to know l.a. taxpayers might actually take notice if they set aside tax money, land and resources to build these shelters, but hey! if we pass off our brilliant idea on those evil big businesses, everyone will get behind us!
the idiocy is mind-boggling. something very bad is going to happen at one of these rest stops and the brain-damaged twits on the city council will get their comeupance. and it will be just as sweet as watching john edwards admit on the national news that he is as big of a weasel conservatives always knew he was.
thank heavens i moved out of l.a. to go to college and could never afford to move back.
Just wait until on of the ‘day workers’ gets hurt while in the city mandated shelter…… Who will they sue? Of course, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. for not providing security!
Who is supposed to supply the toilet paper and building maintenance? Can the big box stores bill the city – oh wait – that would be the tax payer!!!!!!
So glad I moved from Los Angeles 14 years ago!
Why don’t you all illuminate us on how your family came over here Rob?
Here’s a legal point to consider…

BruceB…. I thought you might find this interesting…
Where do you think America is on this list…?
Their army was also made of illegals who weren’t about to stand up and fight when Alaric stood on the Rhine and basically told them the more people that fought back, the more people his army would get to kill. The Romans then bought him off by
building him shelters with restrooms, toilet paper and a janitor to clean up after themgiving him whatever he basically wanted.Breaking: Los Angelos hit by 9.3 earthquake. Nothing is left.
It could happen.
Unamimous? Truer proof of Lord Acton’s critique of democracy is seldom seen.
Two comments about LA/Hollywood:
1. I just spent a month there, renting a room, and had to cash a $35 refund check written on the landlord’s B of A account.
I presented the check and my driver’s license at the landlord’s B of A branch bank. NOT GOOD ENOUGH! They had to fingerprint me also, because I didn’t have a checking account there.
I pointed out to them that an illegal alien could get a B of A checking account with no American birth certificate, no passport, and no social security number, and thereby avoid the need for fingerprints, but AMERICAN CITIZENS needed to get fingerprinted!
2. At a writers’ seminar, someone mentioned that they had just heard that Isaac Hayes had died, right after Bernie Mac. A woman piped up, “I don’t wish ill of anyone (sic), but they are both dead while Bush-Cheney are still alive”
Sick town, all around.
Wow. No one has ever quoted that here before. Thank you, Rob. Thank you.
My great, great, great grandmother owned and ran a hotel in Bodie California in the 1800’s. My great, great grandfather came from Norway at the age of 18 and drove a herd of cattle from the east coast to California. My other great, great grandfather ROBert ran a gambling house in Virginia City.
My great, great, great grandma and my great, great, uncle and my great great grandfather are buried in the now ghost town of Bodie, California.
When I die, I will be the sixth generation to be buried in California, I will be buried in Bishop, California where there is a stained glass window with my great, great grandfather’s name on it in the first church constructed there.
It doesn’t mean anything to have this history… but I SURE wish they had bought a few thousand acres of California land when it was cheap.. lol
Home Depot should put a very large sign out in front of their store saying: “All prices are 10% above the price listed because LA city council requires us to provide services to illegal aliens, and we are passing the cost on to the folks who voted for them.”
California is lost. We should negotiate with Mexico to give them California, but we get to deport the illegal aliens from the rest of the country.
Oh, wait, as a sovereign nation we already have that right. We just don’t have anyone who will do it.
I feel hopeless. Obama and McCain are clueless and will continue to pander to hispanics. It is ridiculous that the most powerful country has a problem keeping illegals from crossing a border. In a casino you can’t do math in your head, so I think asking our gov’t to protect a border is simple enough.
Where’s a better earthquake when you need one?
great idea!!
If I were Emperor, we would have skipped Iraq and invaded Mexico and taken their oil, they have a LOT, and cleaned up their entire governing system… but that would have made sense, and America is flopping like a fish.

Howdy from Texas! Thanks for fixing my password See-Dubya and thanks to Michelle for opening registration!
To comment on the illegal immigration chaos, I just keep thinking of a quote by Toynbee and it rings so true, “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder”.

They could clean it themselves, but they won’t do anything for free.
Blatantly unconstitutional.
I guess the retailers can use the illegals to build their day-labor centers with shelter, drinking water, bathrooms and trash cans. What no footbaths. . . .CAIR will be outraged
I cant wait to leave this insane craphole.
The ordinance mandates that proposed big-box stores obtain conditional-use permits, which could then require them to build day-labor centers with shelter, drinking water, bathrooms and trash cans.
This “ordinance” doesn’t effect existing stores only those “proposed”. There won’t be any NEW stores because neither Home Depot or Lowe’s will build anything new in the city of LA due to the huge liability factor involved. The shareholders will make sure that it doesn’t happen.
As for the City Council–where is a nice suicide bomber when you need one???
How do you describe the absolute insane stupidity of this comment?
Hold businesses accountable? For what? Because some illegal has decided to come onto their business property and loiter waiting for someone to show up and give them a job?
How about holding political nitwits accountable for not enforcing the existing laws on illegal immigration?
What if illegal aliens decided to start hanging out at the corner 7-11? Will they be next to be required to build shelters?
Hold the morons accountable who support illegal immigration, and would scream lawsuit the first time some home improvement business tried to keep them from loitering on their property.
Example to the nation? Yeah, an example of what happens when raving leftists are put in total control of government.
They are…hence the reason these nitwits are forcing private business to do this.
That’s my assessment also:
Great comment!
We need a law to require an area outside your home providing refreshments, water, air conditioning, a crowbar, and maybe an extra ski mask in case they forgot theirs, outside your homes for any “undocumented homeowner” that may want to come onto your property.
What do you say?
So, does this mean if I get a bad day laborer from the city certified day labor center, I can sue the city for any damages caused by their ‘city certified worker’?
This is going to open up a real can of worms for the city of LA.
Trying going to the Home Depot on Wilshire Blvd without being swarmed by illegals looking for work. The day-labor center there is a joke. They may go there for water but that’s about it. They urinate and beg for work in the parking lot. It’s third world Mexican style. I stopped going there and mostly deal with local mom and pop stores now. I pay more but at least I don’t get bothered by the los loney boys.
I’d give a nickel to ask Parks in some sort of press conference to comment on the effect that unlimited migration from Mexico is having on the already troubled black community – specifically unlimited competition from people willing to work for third-world wages. Are blacks in south-central LA already gainfully employed at decent wages? Who knew?
How is it that so many large cities are governed by such fools? Parks was an utter failure as police chief so his constituents, many of whom are victims of his failed term as chief, elect the idiot to the council.
We get the government we deserve.
Seems obvious to me that City Councils attact morons and idiots.
Can’t the city council be arrested for aiding and abidding a Felony for passing such a law?
I thought it was mexifornia?…maybe all remaining Americans should leave with a scorched earth policy?? let them rebuild it to 3rd world standards….
I would like to see some of the business shutdown for a week as a protest.
What are the people to do when the elected government REFUSES to enforce the law? Their primary duty is to protect us by enforcing the law.
Please do not suggest to vote. I do that already, but unfortunately, any vote this November will not fix this situation.
Does it appear to anyone else but me that somone (with very deep pockets) is forcing the US into an EU type arrangement by absorbing Mexico? You know NAFTA, the proposed Highway from Mexico to Canada, the phantom fence, the sanctuary cities, so on, so forth?
Are all day laborers illegal aliens?
No, but it stands to reason that most legal workers have more opportunities and do not have to resort to the “gamble” of waiting around and competing with illegals to get a job.
I’ve had to resort to day labor out of desperation at one period of my life, and believe me, if other opportunities are available, ANYONE would go elsewhere.
What is ironic is that the commander-in-chief opened the doors to the country AND told all of you why it is good for you. Now, what is the point, when the proverbial horse has left the barn? Well, posting here gives some consolation, for sure.
But after rejecting Tom Tancredo, Americans pretty much begged for ther brothers from other side of the southern border. As they say, be careful who you ask for. You may get it.. in this case, them!
Impeach.
I have the sudden urge to put up money to build a new Home Depot store and tell LA to screw off with this law and take it all the way to the Supreme Court
This has to be unconstitutional.
An excellent attempt! you almost had me for a minute, except…wait, you blame bush for everything.
The beginning of this flood came in 1994 with the signing of NAFTA.
Bonus points if you can name the US President responsible for that lovely piece of legislation that started this process?
Times up!
That would be William Jefferson Clinton!
But thanks for playing! We have some lovely parting gifts! Barry F, tell them what they’ve won!!!!
I don’t know grumbles, why don’t you go put on a jacket with the letters I.C.E. in big letters on the front and back and walk up to these day laborers and find out.
Then the Communist Council will pass an ordinace requiring retailers, as a condition of closing, build the shelters. They are, afterall, responsible…
This is nothing new. In the late ’70′s my brother applied for a car loan at a bank in Tucson. He had excellent credit, including a letter of credit from a bank in Illinois where he had done business for years. When he was turned down, he told the loan officer “if my skin was more tan and my name Rodriguez, I bet the decision would be different”. He got his loan the next day.
I am beginning to believe that ALL of the cries of “just being compassionate” and “these poor people” are completely disingenuous.
Given the obvious racism being practiced by the banks (even when it means riskier loans), tells me that “something completely different” is happening. Now, I wonder what exactly that is. Any suggestions?
LOL. Me too. But I also got the “he’s just bitching agian, so don’t get him started comments” even form family members. People just don’t wat to open their eyes to eh problems this is causing and how much worse it will get if we don’t secure the boreder and stop amnesty. I guess all of us border hawks are the new chicken littles to the uninformed masses.
That was the funniest d*mn thing I have seen in a long while.
Perhaps the big box stores could build a HOLDING PEN and hire off-duty ICE agents as private police?
They could call it ‘roach motel’…
Save the enemy the trouble of tearing the country down.
Way to go Repubs/Dems.
That is more fair
thanks
Let your Congress know how you feel Here.
abstractmind, Depending on which party they support, as long as Dems bt. Repubs and vice versa, most Americans are happy, regardless of weather america as a country goes to dogs.
Although you miss the point/big-picture, glad you feel better.
I wrote via email to Home Depot corporate headquarters urging them to fight this. Here are the relevant paragraphs from the response that I received:
The only problem I see building these facilities is that several illegal alien families will move in and call it home.got to be alot better than what they already live in.. What will happen next? LA City Council will say it is perfectly legal and will want these home improvement stores to accomodate all of them. If I was Home Depot, I would take my business elsewhere and tell City council to stick it.
Has the water in LA been tested recently? It has to be something in the water that is unique to California. This is way beyond stupid, perhaps there has been a mass movement from San Fran to LA.
Has it occured to anybody that the only winners here wilb be the lawyers:
Scenario: I go to the Loews/HomeDepot/whatever and buy some materials and I need some labor to get it put together. I go out to the Store-provided pavilion and hire a couple of “workers”.
I get them to my house where they beat me up, trash my house and steal everything not nailed down.
What happens??? I SUE THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THE STORE.
Somebody tell me this won’t happen.
PC is Thought Control
LEE
Why do they not have to provide the same services for legal Americans? So the law states toilets, waters, shelter etc are to be provided only for one specific group of people – namely ILLEGAL ALIEN day workers? This is outright RACISM!!!!
What the hell are these morons trying to do – ‘out-liberal’ each other? That’s sure as hell what it looks like.
My son is now 19. All his life I’ve tried to show him the stupidity of the left. However, since I’m pretty passionate about politics and a little over the top sometimes(my bad), he has gotten tired of it and I was concerned that I pushed him the wrong way. No fear though…I finally got it and just left him to find out for himself. These type of incredibly stupid political decisions come out daily it seems and I need not worry any more about. If you have a brain it becomes apparent quickly that the left is missing theirs. Unfortunately that is half the people in this country.
Ok and the city’s had nothing to do with this I guess.
To be fair maybe the stores could provide the land and the city can provide the construction cost and keep a police officer there for “Public Safety”
The Home Depot supports legal immigration to the United States and does not support illegal immigration.
People congregate at the bus stop. That doesn’t mean we hand out lunch , create a housing area for them and then give them free bus passes.
This is an example for the nation if they want to understand what communism is. Most people don’t seem to have any idea what communism is. Just in case ya didn’t know… This is a good one.
All that the companies would do is pass on this “fee” to the end user (customer).
Dumb at the highest level of dumb.
I think it is interesting that all you clowns from the rest of the country are throwing CA under the bus collectively. It took massive demonstrations in CA for the rest of you dopes to wake-up and smell the coffee. Where were you then? Thought you were safe in your little hovels did ya? Illegals are coming your way if they are not already there. Keep up the good work. I can name a hell of a lot of politicians that have been elected outside of CA who are helping this problm along.
Rob,
From snopes:
Didn’t want you to attribute this thought provoking quote to the wrong person.
