McCain meets with Big Windy

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 15, 2008 02:39 PM

John McCain met with T. Boone Pickens yesterday to hear the Big Wind sales pitch. Hey, why should Nancy Pelosi have all the Boone-doggly fun?

Hmmmmm:

T. Boone Pickens was waiting for John McCain in a small conference room at the Aspen Meadows Resort, where the two, according to Pickens, were going to be “talking about the Pickens plan.”

“We’re going to have a good visit,” he added.

Pickens, a famous oilman and one of America’s richest men, is now pushing a plan to drop the United States’ dependence on foreign oil and focus more on alternative energies including wind and natural gas. He said it had been two years since he had last met with McCain.

McCain entered the room alongside his campaign’s senior adviser Steve Schmidt and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. and greeted Pickens, who was dressed in a green blazer and tan pants with no tie.

“You’re looking trim,” Pickens told McCain as they engaged in some small talk. Pickens mentioned yesterday’s Census article in a newspaper about how non-Hispanic whites would no longer be the majority in 2042.

“You and I won’t have to worry about that,” Pickens said jokingly, referring to the age of the two men.

Ho-ho-ho.

I don’t believe that to be true. In fact – most successful industries did so with no government “help”. Only when gov’t gets involved in any way, has there been a need for further intrusion. The free market will do just fine on it’s own. Further – I’m a little puzzled why a bunch of (primarily) lawyers in Washington DC are better at picking out winning and losing technologies than consumers. You have to admit the track record of Washington DC in picking winning things has been rather abysmal.

There is an estimated 1.2 million MW of harvestable wind in the US. Currently the US gets roughly 18,000 MW electricity from wind or 0.7% of it’s total energy production. T. Boone wants the US to get that number up to 20% or 515,000 MW.
    That translates to buku dollars.

Do a quick CBR analysis in your head vs. the amount of money we’re giving to the Arabs.

Fair point I guess allrsn. I’m not an expert and I don’t know if wind power is worth the type of private/public investment I referred to in my prior post. We’ll see. My point is simply that historically the kind of massive innovation we’re talking about has required a partnership between private industry and government.

cRus, you’re just wrong. I don’t have the time or inclination to link you to the applicable sources, but almost every major innovation in industry and technology in this country was the result of a private/public partnership. A bit like R&D I will admit, in that there have been misses (and maybe wind will end up being one of these), but that’s the nature of the beast. Go back and do a little research on industries such as oil, rail, aerospace, etc. Intellectual honesty my man.

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) is the cleanest currently-operational coal-fired electricity generation technology. FutureGen is an experimental U.S. research project to investigate the possibility of sequentering IGCC CO2 emissions underground.

This is where the future’s at. Now I have a feeling Pickens is aiming high so the total percentage of wind is around 7% to 10%, maybe less.

Why put that much money into wind when we have the largest coal reserves in the world. Granted we have the second largest wind reserves in the world; a quick guess makes me think Picken’s Plan will add 170,000 – 200,000 windmills to the US landscape.

Farmers will make tons in royalties.

    2:16 p.m. EDT Aug. 15, 2008
DALLAS, Aug 15, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Below is a statement issued by T. Boone Pickens following his meeting this morning with U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) in Aspen, Colorado:

“It was a pleasure to sit down with Senator McCain and discuss firsthand an issue that is America’s top priority: ending our dependence on foreign oil, which today is approaching 70 percent. We plan on having a similar meeting with Senator Obama in the very near future. I have repeatedly stressed the nonpartisan aspects of my initiative. This is a threat to our economic and national security and something that requires bipartisan support.
During the meeting I reiterated the urgency of the situation. I told him that any credible domestic energy policy must reduce our foreign dependence on foreign oil by at least 30% in the next 10 years (on top of conservation that is beginning to happen), must utilize proven and available technologies and be 100 percent comprised of American resources.
We discussed my plan in some detail. I also outlined our progress in building more than one million supporters who are actively pushing this issue with the goal of getting legislation passed in the first 100 days of the next administration that will get us on the path to radically reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
While I can not speak for the Senator, my sense is that he was interested and encouraged by the work we are doing and recognizes that citizen education and citizen involvement is key to changing course and actually developing a real energy policy with teeth that will help this country from our current disastrous path.”

So McCain heard him out, so will Obama. Lets see if “little windy” makes an issue out of it when he meets with obama.

Well he is looking out for the TV weathercaters too, not just himself, Nero. We’ll need to check the local weather ever morn to see if there’s a breeze so we can cook breakfast and drive in to work.

On the plus side, that means more healthy people since we’ll lose pounds in skipping cooked meals and having to walk to/from work on days the weather’s calm.

I don’t think anybody figures McCain is campaigning to lose but rather he does not know how to campaign to win.

Fortunately for him his major opponent is also mighty clueless. So, with that, the hope is it may come down to which one does the last dumb thing. I’m not sure if I’m more amazed or amused by the respective ongoing comedies of errors.

The good news for McCain is that he may be within striking distance. The bad news is that when he does work up the gumption to strike, it’s usually hazy or off target.

On the positive side at least McCain didn’t take this opportunity to announce he was considering selecting a cross-dressing Ambassador to the UN to throw off the hostile nations when s/he shows up one day as Jane and the next as Joe.
