Disturbingly, the average American isn’t even paying attention to Russia’s chilling re-emergence as a world security nightmare. In my office, there are several female employees fresh out of college, and all of them are voting for Obama. Since one is the daughter of Israeli immigrants, I asked her how she could possibly support him over McCain, given the fact that he wants to coddle maniacal, Jew-hating regimes like Iran that are committed to Israel’s destruction. Her response? “He’s cool!”
If we weren’t living in such precarious times, her statement might actually be funny. Instead, I walked away feeling pretty depressed, all too aware that she represents just one of many ill-informed American voters who place a high value on style and little, if any, on substance. There is an abject lack of critical thinking skills in our Oprah-sized, feel-good culture. I just hope common-sense and true patriotism prevail in November.

Go look up enlisted salaries vs officer salaries and get back to me lgm (clone). Officers make up a much smaller percentage of the military and tend to vote against their enlisted underlings. Enlisted folk are smart enough to remember what happened to the military spending and concern shown to the military under previous CiC’s Carter and Clinton. Power corrupts…

You make a good point. As a fellow conservative, I am less than thrilled by the prospect of voting for McCain. But at least he reacted strongly to the Russian invasion from the get-go, and continues to condemn Putin during his campaign stops. During the debates, he was quick to respond with the KGB line in reference to Vlad’s soul (assuming he even has one). The best Obama could muster initially was a typical, wishy-washy liberal line urging both sides to show “restraint.” It was only in reaction to McCain’s bold statement that the messiah switched into politically motivated, “tough guy” mode.
But for the purposes of highlighting personal interactions with lovestruck Obama supporters, I could not have posted a more telling example. Then again, we still have a few months to go until November. I am sure I’ll encounter something else even more indicative of the dearth of meaningful standards when it comes to voting for an American president.
Been a long time since we had an Adonnis in the White House. Like, going way back to JFK!!!

Daria’s anecdotal evidence sure has me worried. Not as worried as other commenter’s predictions of nuclear winter or the forthcoming race war that Obama’s election will bring about make me, but still. Does she think he’s cool? Oh no! It’s almost as if we live in a country where someone who went to boarding school and Yale all the while being the son of the former head of the CIA, VP and President could run as a “regular” guy and as an outsider.
And, if you want people to consider John McCain the candidate of “substance,” you might tell him to not say things like countries don’t invade other countries in the 21st Century. As it makes him, look, y’know, like an uninformed, “average” American. Or worse, another empty suit, insulated in Washington, unchallenged by his press and his electorate, who thinks he can say any old thing, no matter how ridiculous and inaccurate it may be, and as long as he flaunts his resume, we’ll just lap it up.

Barack Obama is merely the culmination of our culture. Obama fills many of today’s virtues. What are today’s virtues? Primarily, openness and equality. As Allan Bloom stated, “Openness used to be the virtue that permitted us to seek the good by using reason. It now means accepting everything and denying reason’s power. The unrestrained and thoughtless pursuit of openness, without recognizing the inherent political, social, or cultural problem of openness as the goal of nature, has rendered openness meaningless. Cultural relativism destroys both one’s own and the good. Culture, hence, closedness, reigns supreme. Openness to closedness is what we teach.” Then you have equality, which now trumps excellence, for one can be no better than another, have more than another, regardless of disparities in the amount of time and effort one spends to accomplish their goals.
So, here we have Obama, who doesn’t “flip-flop,” but rather is “open” to all sides, which is now more virtuous than being right. In our culture now, he’s also the personification of equality. Regardless of his lack of skill, intellect, character, and leadership credentials, Obama still carries the day in terms of equality by showing that despite all of his deemed “hurdles” of race, mishaps of character, coming from a broken home, etc., he shows that we’re “good” enough to elect him, which provides more people “hope,” since no longer do you need to have the aforementioned qualities or a strong work ethic to be President. All one needs now is an “open” mind and the most average, or even “disadvantaged,” background.
So when we ask ourselves where our culture has gone, I answer with two words: Barack Obama.
