Texas teachers can pack heat
I think this is good news: School campuses in one Texas district will no longer be self-protection-free zones. The district has approved rule changes allowing teachers to carry guns:
When classes start Aug. 25 in the tiny Harrold school district, there will be one distinct difference from years prior: Some of the teachers may have guns.
To deter and protect against school shootings, trustees have altered district policy to allow employees to carry concealed weapons if they have a state permit and permission from the administration. The 110-student district lies 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth on the eastern end of Wilbarger County, near the Oklahoma border.
More than a dozen state legislatures have considered making it legal to carry guns on college campuses, but experts and officials contacted by the Star-Telegram say the move is unheard of in elementary or secondary schools.
Superintendent David Thweatt said a main concern was that the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff’s office, leaving students and teachers without protection.
‘To be prepared’
The district’s lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target, Thweatt said.
Other security measures are in place, including one-way access to enter the school, state-of-the-art surveillance cameras and electric locks on doors. But after the Virginia Tech massacre and the Amish school shooting in Pennsylvania, Thweatt felt he had to take further action, he said.
“When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that’s when all of these shootings started,” Thweatt said. “Why would you put it out there that a group of people can’t defend themselves? That’s like saying ‘sic ’em’ to a dog.”
Now, that’s an “example for the nation.”

Stereotypes and regurgitation of a portion of a phrase that comes from George Bernard Shaw’s play Man and Superman (specifically Maxims for Revolutionists which is appended to the play) shows a lack of knowledge and credibility on your part. It refers to revolutionaries and comes from a work of fiction.
…and for the teachers the school is the work-place so this is doubly good in that it sets a work place-precedent too.
Those schools just became SAFE again.
If universities would give full scholarships to ex-military, have them go through monthly drug/alcohol testing, require weekly time on the firing range (with college credit), and have them carry concealed weapons on campus, they’re would never be another Virginia Tech tragedy. If scumbag Sam had the idea of blowing away his classmates, he’d have to think that there may be several former Marines in the class with Glocks, that are not going to lie down on the floor and beg for their lives. That would stop it….COLD.
These killers are cowards. Cowards don’t make statements in front of armed heroes. They go where the “NO CONCEALED WEAPONS ALLOWED” signs are posted.

Shooting “himself after he was done,” says it all. If he knew he wouldn’t be “done” cause someone would shoot him first would be the deterrent. He WAS on a suicide mission, no doubt, but he wanted to KILL first. If he felt he wouldn’t be able to kill anyone, and that his end wouldn’t be at his own hand, then he wouldn’t have attempted it. Your argument is weak. I suspect you’d be on the floor begging for your life when he walked up. That’s a real plan (for sheep heading to slaughter).

No, he might not have been concerned about getting out alive since he did turn the gun on himself, but he wouldn’t have had the free reign to gun down as many people as he wanted before doing so.

None of this is to say that CC would not provide effective mitigation of these nut jobs, i.e, take him out before he does more damage, but you have zero proof that some wacko like the guy at VT, who knows he is going to die and in fact wants to, would be deterred.
That’s the beauty of concealed weapons. No one knows who is carrying the gun. That bit of mystery is part of the deterrent.

Despite the fact that FL recently passed a law prohibiting employers from banning their employees from carrying guns, there was an exemption in there for schools. So, at my private university in Daytona, where roughly a fifth of the students are in some branch of ROTC training to be officers in the military, we still cannot carry guns. Ridiculous.

I’m not sure but I don’t think this is anything new. About 4 years ago I was taking one of my Texas CHL renewal classes and the instructor said a few school districts were starting to discretely send select teachers in for the course. The law made it legal to carry in school provided the administration approved it. It doesn’t have to be public knowledge. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are quite a few teachers out there packing right now.
The first thing I thought of, when reading this article, is how changed our culture has become, when we are glad teachers can have guns at school. Society really needs to take a step back and ponder how we got to this step. Growing up, kids brought guns to school; hunting after class, gun club. They might even show the gun to their teacher who might say, “Cool. Let me see”. Even teachers had guns; same reason…or for demonstration. Of course, then, teachers had the privilege to smack students out of line. Students could go home, and get smacked again, for the same reason. Is it video games, tv, movies that spark this “violence solves everything” mentality? Going to English school for awhile, showed me how the “cane” was used, though old Mr. Burns wouldn’t use it on us Americans; just the Brits. It’s sad to see how our centers of learning have become battle zones, instead of education zones. I was reading the other day, about Dunbar H.S., in D.C., that, for years, used to be one of the finest schools in the nation, producing Ivy League college graduates. Now, it is one of the worse, yet people/society don’t care anymore. A sad state of affairs, when we’re happy that teachers can arm themselves.

Lord willing, my son is never going to a public school, though. I went to both public and private schools, and I can tell you the difference. My parents didn’t see the problem with public schools until we started going to a Christian school. Boy, is there a difference.

Back in my day, “safe sex” meant the lasses’ dad didn’t own a shotgun and the guy’s parents & siblings were out of the house for a few hours.
Does anyone else remember walking to elementary school carrying a single-shot .22 rifle so you could hunt on the way home? We kept them in the coat room, and no one turned a hair. Mrs. Walker only asked at the beginning of the day if we were sure the rifles were unloaded. No one messed with anyone else’s guns, no one got shot at school, and some of us took home meat that otherwise might not be on the dinner menu.
I understand that times have changed, but the idea that schools should be “gun-free zones” is ludicrous. The Pearl, MS, school shooter was stopped by the vice-principal who had to run to his truck parked off-campus to retrieve his .45 and run back. “Gun-free school zones” killed or injured children that day.

As a College student I hope that some day my kids may be able to carry guns when the are in college.
On the VTech. Anniversary some group held a memorial/anti-gun service. One of the asked me if I felt safer because guns were not allowed, I said “no.” When asked why I sad “well, you claim that the Vtech. students killed were safe because the law said not guns were allowed,” and walked off.

I can remember back when I was in HS (during the Dark Ages) and you could pull into the parking lot and see any number of pickups with gun racks and guns in them. Never really occurred to me to look askance at it…and this was in the student parking lot. Just didn’t think it was that odd…and I’d moved from the Atlanta suburbs to a small town in Tx.
