Worried about normalizing diplomatic relations with Libya? Here’s something worse.

Why is there this rush across the free world to rehabilitate Moammar Khaddafy? I do not understand this:

Nearly 20 years after the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, the United States and Libya have signed a compensation deal for the American victims, a crucial step on the road to restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Oh, wonderful. I was wondering when we’d be all friendly with the Dictooter (last item)once again. Bush’s legacy is secure.

Well, it’s not so secure with the victims of Qaddafi’s terrorism. From the ABC story:

Some family members say they’d rather keep Libya on notice than receive the financial settlement.

“I would gladly forego the money to have Libya remain on the state sponsored terrorism list, so long as Gadhafi’s in power,” said Peter Lowenstein whose son Alexander, a 21 year-old student at Syracuse, was on board Flight 103.

“I don’t think we should be doing this in exchange for Libya getting a free ride,” Lowenstein said.

But sad to say that’s not the worst bit of Libya-boosting going on these days. As I mentioned here, and as I would expect the entire blogosphere would be screaming about, France’s Sarkozy has agreed to build a nuc…

Wait a minute. This needs the caps lock key:

Oh but wait, there’s more. France isn’t the only one ready to re-nuclearize Libya:

What makes it more remarkable is that Prime Minister Putin had tried to clear up this misunderstanding during a meeting with Moammar Gadhafi in Tripoli in April, but apparently in vain.

After receiving such a “present,” there was nothing left to do but discuss the details of a whole range of Libyan-Russian large-scale cooperation projects _ from producing, processing and exporting oil and gas and laying pipelines on the Mediterranean sea bed, to selling arms to Tripoli, and building railroads and nuclear power plants.

Great–if the West doesn’t give Libya a new reactor, maybe Putin will.

Have a nice weekend!

P.S. Yes, I know these reactors are power plants, and not designed to be part of a nuclear weapons program.

You know, like Iran’s. There’s another country with billions of barrels of oil reserves that has a sudden hankering for some sweet nuclear energy…

But even so, the by-products of a perfectly innocent nuclear power plant can still make one hell of a dirty bomb in the hands of the right terrorist.

Whew. Aren’t you glad Qaddafi’s not a terrorist anymore!
