Worried about normalizing diplomatic relations with Libya? Here’s something worse.
Why is there this rush across the free world to rehabilitate Moammar Khaddafy? I do not understand this:
Nearly 20 years after the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, the United States and Libya have signed a compensation deal for the American victims, a crucial step on the road to restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Oh, wonderful. I was wondering when we’d be all friendly with the Dictooter (last item)once again. Bush’s legacy is secure.
Well, it’s not so secure with the victims of Qaddafi’s terrorism. From the ABC story:
Some family members say they’d rather keep Libya on notice than receive the financial settlement.
“I would gladly forego the money to have Libya remain on the state sponsored terrorism list, so long as Gadhafi’s in power,” said Peter Lowenstein whose son Alexander, a 21 year-old student at Syracuse, was on board Flight 103.
“I don’t think we should be doing this in exchange for Libya getting a free ride,” Lowenstein said.
But sad to say that’s not the worst bit of Libya-boosting going on these days. As I mentioned here, and as I would expect the entire blogosphere would be screaming about, France’s Sarkozy has agreed to build a nuc…
Wait a minute. This needs the caps lock key:
FRANCE’S SARKOZY HAS AGREED TO BUILD A NUCLEAR REACTOR FOR MOAMMAR QADDAFI.
Oh but wait, there’s more. France isn’t the only one ready to re-nuclearize Libya:
What makes it more remarkable is that Prime Minister Putin had tried to clear up this misunderstanding during a meeting with Moammar Gadhafi in Tripoli in April, but apparently in vain.
After receiving such a “present,” there was nothing left to do but discuss the details of a whole range of Libyan-Russian large-scale cooperation projects _ from producing, processing and exporting oil and gas and laying pipelines on the Mediterranean sea bed, to selling arms to Tripoli, and building railroads and nuclear power plants.
Great–if the West doesn’t give Libya a new reactor, maybe Putin will.
Have a nice weekend!
P.S. Yes, I know these reactors are power plants, and not designed to be part of a nuclear weapons program.
You know, like Iran’s. There’s another country with billions of barrels of oil reserves that has a sudden hankering for some sweet nuclear energy…
But even so, the by-products of a perfectly innocent nuclear power plant can still make one hell of a dirty bomb in the hands of the right terrorist.
Whew. Aren’t you glad Qaddafi’s not a terrorist anymore!

EVERYONE is building nuclear power plants so they can keep the lights on in the future.
Everyone but US.
Freaking sad.
I read about this – this morning-thought-Reagan brought the K- man to his knees and we had not heard much from him in years then–my Pres (Bush) >>>>>>GRRR

We’ll never be able to build nuke plants here because the envirowhackos are letting the older ones age so there can be an accident to scare the living daylights out of the entire nation so we NEVER build one again.
Why do you think they sue, sue, sue, sue and sue more whenever there’s even “talk” about building a new plant?
Seems like theres always negative consequences for so-called “peace deals” However in all fairness, Qadaffi was willing to give up Libyas entire chem/bio/nuclear weapons programs up…but nuclear reactors in Libya? Thats way too far
I think Qadaffi is cooperating to rattle the west…to good effect.
Just like the Russians…we could have trusted them yesterday, but no more.
I do not understand these diplomats anymore.
Why aren’t they inflating their tires instead?
Stupid is as stupid does!
The United States in its infinite wisdom has decided to sell nuclear reactor technology to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
“USA Today reported last summer [2002] that nearly four out of five hits on a clandestine al Qaeda Web site came from inside Saudi Arabia”
globalsecurity.org;
“A recent Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) report said it would not be surprising to see Saudi Arabia fall into the hands of Islamic radicals before 2020.”
Wahhabist Saudi Arabia, home of Osama Bin Ladin and 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers. I mean what could go wrong?
http://www.america.gov/st/peacesec-english/2008/March/20080325155024idybeekcm0.5472223.html
“The United States and Bahrain will cooperate in a civil nuclear energy development program that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, meet future energy needs and prevent the spread of nuclear technology that could be used in making weapons.”
http://www.america.gov/st/peacesec-english/2008/May/20080516160353idybeekcm0.3394586.html
“This agreement will pave the way for Saudi Arabia’s access to safe, reliable fuel sources for energy reactors and demonstrate Saudi leadership as a positive nonproliferation model for the region,” a May 16 White House fact sheet said.
The French, Germans, Russians, and Americans are selling unstable Muslim nations nuclear technology. We are dealing with Pakistan and the potential of their weapons falling into the hands of a more radical government. Iran is possibly on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons thanks originally to the ‘Atoms For Peace’ program, German corporations (Siemens and others) assisting the Bushehr reactor, and Russian assistance as well.
Does there ever come a point when we learn?
Another sad aspect of the entire dynamics involved with nuclear power is the fact that the dems so-caved to the radical enviro-nuts during the 60’s and 70’s, that today corporations like, GE for example, are very much quicker to jump on the global bandwagon, case in point here being Iran and several other hostile America-hating nations they do business with. If they can’t make money selling nuclear reactors here…again because of mostly democrat-written laws and red-tape, then they will find someway somehow to build their products elsewhere….to the detriment of America as a nation and to the American people in terms of jobs, technologies leaving here at record pace, which is not good when your talking nuclear….and the terrorism factor of dirty-bombs as see-dub has mentioned above. Not Good. We could use 100 or more new, safe, nuclear reactors right here in the good ol’ USA. That should keep GE profitable and busy and more patriotic for a long time and at the same time keep the technology in safer hands. Let them figure out their own damn derivative of E=MC2 and then how to implement it for energy in a safe manner….that should stall em’ for a few decades more right? I mean come on…..65% of them are living in sand caves for crying in a bucket!
Khaddafy is a enemy who, when he wants to be friendly, you shake hands with, but keep both eyes on him, and your other hand close to your weapon, never turning your back.
The pain these families have endured over all these years is unimaginable..
If this all comes to pass it better be a boatload of money and all of it tax free.
Gadhafi is in the class as Yasser Arafat, a terrorist that has fooled the fools. Maybe Osama (I don’t mean Obama) figures if he lays low long enough he will be forgiven.
Waiiiit… the Saudis don’t have energy sources? What’s all that gooey stuff under the sand?
Besides, we need the nuclear power plants here to run all those electric cars that Barry O. wants us to have.
Russia,s actions this week in Georgia and their threats towards Poland have done more to elevate the demand for nuclear ‘facilities’ than any other reason that can be put forth. I could insert a second amendment analogy, but you already know that. Putin’s quite the capitalist. Create the demand and then fill the need.
At the rate things are going we will be the instruments of our own destruction.
Thanks see-dubya like the invasion of Georgia by the Russian bear, which is quickly approaching a change back to my old SAC aircrew days of DEFCON 3 or worse. Now we get more great news from the same person that couldn’t make his failed cease fire in Georgia work, which isn’t already enough to keep me from sleeping well. The West really is hell bent on committing suicide. Why don’t we give him some of our unused plutonium cores from the thousands of deactivated nuclear weapons we have lying around and just get it over with?
NOTE: For you civilians DEFCON = Defense Condition. During the Cold War SAC (Strategic Air Command) was always in DEFCON 3 with Bomber, Tankers, and ground launched Missiles ready to launch in minutes should the Commies try to pull a Pearl Harbor on us. The lower the DEFCON number goes the worse it gets until you hit DEFCON 1 or as we called then, “bend over and kiss your butt good bye time.”
I’m guessing See-Dubya actually does know the reason but doesn’t want to say. If not, google it. Hint: there is a reason.

Like Lenin said, “the capitalists will sell us the rope we will use to hang them with.” This isn’t new–Italian merchants sold giant cannon to the Muslims for profit. The Muslims dragged the cannon to Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey) and destroyed the walls that had protected the city for almost a thousand years. A truly horrible bloodbath resulted, and the roots of the Ottoman Empire were planted.
Like Yogi said, “Deja Vu all over again!”
lgm, could you possibly be a little more ambiguous? I want my head to explode.
Libya and normal relations are two items which cannot be used in the same sentence with logical expression.
Iran soon to be nuclear capable.
North Korea already is.
Libya coming soon to a theater near you.
Pakistan has nukes and out of control tribal pukes just hankerin.
U.N twiddles.
U.s diddles.
Oh impotence! Where is thy sting?
dude,
the giant cannon wasn’t a factor in the fall of constantinople. At best, it was an annoyance for the defenders, and they were able to repair the walls after each shot which took something like 3 hours to to reload a cannon. the cannon balls were said to have weighed something like 500lbs. Btw, the giant cannon wasn’t sold by the Italian merchants. It wouldn’t have made sense for the Italians merchants to sell cannon tech to the muslims as they had trade relations with what was left of the Byzantine Empire. It was built and developed by a Hungarian cannon engineer.
The city fell because the defenders committed a serious mistake. Basically, they accidentally left the one of the gates unlocked. And the Ottoman Turks were able to conquer the city thru this way. Incidentally, it was also the same place where the renagade Crusaders entered to sack the city 100 years before.
No surprise here – offer some substantial bucks to the average American and they’ll be willing to forget anything. Money talks – death walks.
The entire State Department, top to bottom, needs to be cleaned out. Gone – the lot of them. Their agenda is not in the best interests of this Nation. Same thing with the non-operational parts of the CIA. Way too many leftists and apologists in both outfits.
When things don’t work – get rid of them and start over from scratch.
It wouldn’t surprise me that the French will supply nuclear fuel on an exchange basis where Libya must return spent fuel rods ( the raw material for a radiological dispersal device a/k/a “dirty bomb”) as a condition of receiving fresh fuel shipments.
If such is the case than we just have a tempest in a teapot.
Just for kicks anyone know whether spent nuclear fuel is subject to IAEA safeguards?
During the Cold War era, the former Soviet Union required their satellite states in E. Europe to return their spent fuel rods.
