Regarding immigration, Jesus also recognizes the integrity of the state, as He said to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. This is, of course, to prevent pure anarchy. Note that in Genesis it says that people are supposed to be masters of the Earth, and government helps us do this.

Because the War on Terror is a just war, regulation of our borders is a necessity to preserving the peace.

It’s easy for a politician to stand up and say Jesus would vote for me, but it can also be careless, because it wasn’t until the Byzantines adopted Christianity that Christianity was directly involved in state matters, and some sort of criteria of guidance were needed.

Spencer is writing a book expressing his own opinion.
I could write a similar book and have Jesus voting just the opposite of Spencer and provide scripture to back it up. Course, scripture would probably be out of context, but what the heck, it would “prove” my point.

He says Jesus would oppose making President Bush’s tax cuts permanent and that he would support a “very compassionate” immigration policy.

I can understand the confusion but Bennion Spencer wasn’t talking about THAT Jesus. A Democrat would never violate Separation of Church and State. He was speaking about THIS Jesus from another Salt Lake Tribune story:

A Salt Lake City jury found getaway-car driver Jesus A. Jimenez, 23, guilty in connection with the murder last month. He faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced in August.

There’s no doubt Jesus Jimenez would vote for Bennion if only ACORN does their job and gets him and his fellow convicts signed up in time.

Maybe we’re talking across one another, but I guess my point is that whether you consider a person who supports the Democratic Party a Christian or not is irrelevant. What’s in a person’s heart as it relates to religious beliefs is between that person and his or her God. Seems sort of arrogant to think otherwise IMHO.

Did I ever claim otherwise? So, what I call you or what you call yourself is irrelevant, no?

So, back to my original point… a Christian, (or Muslim, Hindu,Jew or Buddhist, for that matter) who believes in a higher power can not in good faith claim to worship the giver of life & still support a political party that condones the taking of innocent, unborn life. So no, a Christian can not be a democrat, & still be a Christian, IMHO.

Most secular laws & based on empathy eg: Don’t murder someone because you don’t want yourself or some one you care about to be murdered… are you with me?

Saying that you are sorry doesn’t hold much weight in a secular court, actually being sorry might. Same with religious laws, confession is not absolution.

Ugh. I’m always irritated by politicians who claim that a figure from the past would support them, be it a religious figure or secular figure. “Dude, Thomas Jefferson would totally campaign for me!” Right. It’s completely idiotic to try and claim “support” from a deceased person of another era. And a sure sign of political desperation.

Off-topic: Speaking of Jesus, I heard on a political forum that Michelle converted to Judaism. I’m not trying to pry into her personal life or anything, but I was under the impression that she was a pretty hardcore Catholic. Just curious, because it’s always intriguing when a religious-style conservative changes religion.

soap, to follow up, you state that in order to be saved, one must follow God’s commands. Seems circular to me. If I don’t follow God’s commands, I’m sinning, right? And if I seek forgiveness, God will absolve me of my sin. Am I missing something? By your definition, it seems to me that the only way to be “saved” is to be perfect and without sin.

soap, we are lawyers after all…that’s kind of what we do. Seriously though, I don’t know the answer to your question. I’m not a member of any organized religion and don’t otherwise purport to be any sort of expert. I guess I would say that I’m guessing it isn’t your place (or anybody else’s place) to say whether or not a particular person is a Christian or is “saved” for that matter.
