“Buy American:” Obama channels Pat Buchanan
So, now it’s okay to put America first?
So, now it’s okay to be a “nativist,” ultra-patriotic protectionist?
So, now it’s okay to bitterly cling to the nationalist idea that our country is superior?
Didn’t want this one to get lost over the weekend. It’s too rich: The Obamessiah is channeling Pat Buchanan and is now a red-white-and-blue Great American pandering to Harley riders. Obama’s targeted radio ad claims John McCain was a hypocrite for embracing Harley riders’ support simply because he opposed a federal mandate that the government buy American-made vehicles. And the Obama camp is disseminating a “Buy American” logo to show its purported patriotic colors:
You want to talk hypocrisy, Mr. Citizen of the World? There’s nothing hypocritical about opposing coercion in taxpayer-funded purchases. Hypocrisy is dissing America First voters while nibbling on Brie at private San Francisco fund-raisers and proclaiming to be embarrassed that Americans don’t speak Spanish –and then plastering the campaign with “Buy American” stickers in the hopes of winning over a demographic you hold in utter contempt.

Is he opening up a state factory somewhere? You know, these pretty pictures his campaign puts out never have a clear policy stating what the picture represents. I guess he thinks blue collar gun/religion clingers get as distracted as the ADHD types he’s used to hanging around.
Anyway, he’s so patently, transparently patronizing, it’s disgusting.
What’s really sad is the MSM let’s him get away with it. They’ll just repeat the campaign’s position without question. If pressed hard enough, they’ll say Obama “revised” his position.
As “citizen of the world”, shouldn’t he be above national loyalties. Buy American smacks of (gasp) nationalism.

The logo should read, “Buy American Votes,” not Vote.
The Obama message…Vote for me and I will tax the rich, and increase your entitlement funds, and sign legislation that will benefit the unions, because they supported me. Not such a subtle quid pro quo, I don’t think.
This ‘All American’ family will not ever vote for bho. I do not believe one word that comes out of this man’s mouth.

Obama would have my vote if he stood for a tenth of what Buchanan stands for. Unfortunately both candidates can’t even break 1%.

Copy that. The last time I tried to buy an American made car, it was 80% assembled in Mexico. I bought an import that was 80% assembled in the USA and I couldn’t wait to get rid of it.
If Obama were to take on Buchanan’s closed border stance, well, that would be very interesting indeed. I would ride my unicorn to the nearest parallel dimension and vote for the Big O with no problem. But personally, my rule is that whatever Buchanan supports, look at very closely to see what you are missing. If the man came out for Copernicus I would be suspicious. Yes, he is right on border policy, the old stopped-clock routine, but Mark Steyn and MM do a far superior better job of explaining the issues and costs so I will stick with them as my authorities of reference.

If Obama said what he really thought he would not get 10 percent of the vote. He would have to talk about Marxism and the class struggle. He would have to talk the State vs the Individual. He would have to talk about an end to Nations. He would have to reveal his plan on how to dismantle this country step by step.
So since he has to talk about things he has no believe in anyway, he will have no problem contradicting himself.

So what if McCain doesn’t think the federal government should buy American products if they are inferior or over-priced. At least he doesn’t support the aborting of American fetuses.

I think this “Buy American” thing from the Obama camp has more to it than it’s literal meaning.
I think it’s a dig at McCain for having been born in the Panama Canal Zone.

I still point out the hypocritical fact that Obama was criticizing Americans for not speaking “Spanish” … while he does not speak Spanish himself … and I guess the hundreds of other languages in this world don’t count since he only mentioned Spanish …
All of my kids studied at least one foreign language at my insistence … (I personally speak 7 languages) … and obviously here in the SW speaking Spanish can be helpful … but there are many other languages that can be important when outside the U.S.A. …
He doesn’t seem to understand that the reason Europeans tend to speak several languages is not simply a matter of scholastics … but rather of one of necessity and convenience…
Here we can drive for days and still be in the United States … drive for more than 8 hours in Europe and you are most likely in another country with another language and a different set of local laws and customs …

The whole actions (20 years in _____ America church, no flag pin, no hand on heart, trying to rewrite the Constitution to fit his liberal agenda, friends with a guy who bombed government buildings and is proud of it, endorsements from nearly every dictator around the globe) speak louder than words thing. I bought a Toyota Camry and my wife has a Toyota Sienna van. I originally acquired an older Camry from my father and found a mechanic that made it run like it was new. He only works on Toyotas, Hondas, and Nissans. So, we bought new Toyotas because I don’t want to give up a great mechanic.
I do believe that is the free market in action. I chose to buy a specific product because, to maintain it, I trust a certain person because of his reputation.

How can you claim to be a protectionist when all you want to do is raise taxes on business? That’s like claiming that you want to protect infants while at the same time voting down a bill that required medical assistance for newborns that had suffered through a failed abortion. Wait a minute…
If he was truly protectionist, he would abolish taxes on U.S. citizens and companies and subsidize his nanny state with tariffs.

Well, the NYT headline may read that Obama’s “Image” is all-American, but that title itself carries within it the acknowledgement that what’s behind the image may not be what the image portrays.

Sounds like a good plan … I am currently trying to learn some Chinese … one of my son-in-laws is of Chinese descent … a few of his older relatives still speak only basic English and I want to try to better communicate with them … so my daughter and I are studying Chinese together … she wants to make sure their children learn both languages …
Right on…Not sure what Michelle is trying to say here? Of course, I would love to see Obama apply “buy American” to oil too and open out ANWR drilling but I didn’t see much wrong on his call here.

Pat Buchanan is probably the most insightful commentator in America, in most areas.
Free trade is the equivalent of laissez faire, with our country the passive victim. We trade; the rest of the world competes.
In science, a theory is considered valid if it can predict results. It is said that economics was invented to make weathermen look good. One could conclude that much economic theory is not valid if it fails in prediction. Sadly global economic theories can’t be tested in a lab like many science theories, so we can only try free trade, open borders, and massive immigration and watch while our once great country goes down the drain.
While he’s probably being disengenuous, I do agree with a policy of “buy American” for government goods… especially defense items. I’m all for international competition for civilian market goods, but buying, say, a fleet of Japanese cars when we can get them here for a similar price is just stupid. If that makes me protectionist, I’m in good company… the Founding Fathers favored high tariffs to protect American industry. Me, I just favor a “buy American” mandate for Gov purchases, unless there’s something we need that we absolutely cannot make here.
I’m all for buy American, but take out the text on that logo and you have a perfect representation of the goatse. I mean fingers and all. Do their graphic designers have internet access?
i’m all for free trade, but we should abide by the exact rules our trading partners set. if they have a 20% tarriff on our products, we should have a 20% tarriff on their products. if they create a trade barrier such as no beef fed with antibiotic supplements, we impose a barrier of no seafood except those caught on a hook and line. we have lost our tv industry, our stereo industry, and are about to lose our auto industry.
See, the first thing I think when I see the logo with “Buy American, vote Obama” is that it’s trying to urge me to buy American by voting Obama, which ironically reminds me that Obama is technically less American than John McCain (you know, the time spent overseas during his youth and all). Yes, I am prepared for all the charges of racism that I must now face.
