Crosses in the sand

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 18, 2008 02:02 PM

Update: “Rock on, nutroots.”

***
Apparently, there is a nutroots-generated controversy over one of John McCain’s war anecdotes involving a fellow POW prison guard who drew a cross in the sand. Fascinating to see the Left expending such unrestrained energy debunking war claims. Maybe they’ll get around to scrutinizing the Christmas in Cambodia tall tale next…

Anyway, Dan Riehl compiles several other examples of people drawing crosses in the sand, which, if the nutroots are to be believed, were all examples of fakery or plagiarism, too…

Tom Maguire weighs in.

Well, I guess when you don’t have facts, personal attacks on one’s service record to our country is all you have in McCain’s case.

Though I wonder if McCain had served in the Chinese or Russian army, he’d get sympathy from NBC?

I mean, you gotta love Brian Williams and Barack Obama’s “understanding” of the issue from Russia’s point view, an “understanding” that wasn’t apparent when we went into Iraq.

Also, it’s nice that NBC has truly embraced the Chinese culture as much as possible on it’s coverage of the Olympics.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll be able to take Hawaii and San Francisco while their power surges past a dying Western and Japanese civilization.

There’s a sentence in a Washington Post editorial online that perfectly captures the essence of Hopenchange as a candidate:

“Obama is one of those rare political figures who seems to grow smaller the closer we approach him.”

Getting to know Hopenchange is like trying to reveal an onion: the more layers of empty and contradictory rhetoric you peel away hoping to get to the man’s core, the more he diminishes until until rather than emerging he simply vanishes.

In a painfully strained analogy, lefties want to call McCain “The Manchurian Candidate.” There is a much stronger case, however, that Hopenchange is “The Potemkin Candidate.” Just like Grigori Potemkin, Hopenchange’s success depends on keeping his audience from wanting to have a look at what’s behind all the false-fronts he’s erected.

    - The Emperor Has No Clothes.
    - The Incredible Shrinking Man.
    - The Potemkin Candidate.
    - The Human Onion.

One thing you can say for him, Hopenchange leaves you with no shortage of apt metaphors and allegories…

There is nothing new in the practice. As you point out, in the first century it was the sign of the fish that believers would draw in the sand (for the non-Greek literate, the letters of the Greek word for fish meant “Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior” to early Christians). Later, as the Cross became the symbol of Christianity, it was the Cross that believers “drew in the sand”.
