Heller gets his gun permit
Happy day: Dick Heller, the plaintiff in the D.C. gun ban case, received his permit today for his revolver.
Congratulations and thanks are in order:
The man whose lawsuit overturned Washington’s handgun ban has successfully registered his revolver, ending a more than 30-year wait to keep the weapon in his home.
Dick Heller walked out of D.C. police headquarters Monday, clutching a yellow firearms registration certificate stamped “approved.” He gave the thumbs-up sign, grinned and said, “Victory!”
Heller was among the first people to seek a gun permit under new rules adopted after the Supreme Court struck down the city’s 32-year-old handgun ban in June. Heller was the plaintiff in that case.

permit? Having to get a permit to have a gun in your home makes it a privilege granted by the government. Didn’t the SCOTUS just say it’s a right, not a privilege?
I have a feeling some people from the NRA was seeing this happened in DC. We need to support their effort for our freedoms being able to carry arms.

Congratulations to Mr. Heller. Now he can defend his home against intruders (the police can’t!) and defend himself against a bizarro government.
This is not over. Keep pushing, Heller. D.C. is flat wrong on this issue and you’re going to have to twist their arms to prove it.
You are correct, single stack, it is a right. However, even I am willing to grant that the government has the power to regulate fireams in some way. They are, by definition, deadly. Like registering a car because, as SCOTUS has ruled, you can commit a crime and travel to another jurisdiction very quickly.
I don’t believe the government can go overboard with regulation, the way the socialists want. I believe in a limited government.
Way to go Mr. Heller! And lets not forget the NRA. They played a huge role along with Heller. Yes, I am a member and I encourage all of you to join. They are the best protection for those of us that are strong supporters of the Second Amendment can have.

Scalia really betrayed the meaning of second amendment in Heller. He made it a privilege ( instead of a right ) by conceding the second amendment allows government to regulate the type of firearms and to require permits and many other restrictions.
I challenge all you Scalia lovers to explain how requiring permits and restricting the type of guns allowed is compatible with a conservative reading of 2nd amendment.
Step number one down. Now, step two. Overturn their ban on semi-auto’s. Then, go after their stupid requirement for a license to keep a gun in one’s home.
Sure glad I live in Oklahoma, where the 2nd amendment is still recognized.

I like my S&W Model 66 .357 magnum. My wife also does alright with it, when it’s loaded with .38 special cartridges.
This is not a victory. He still got denied a permit for his semi-auto. He’s still suing DC over that.
Basically, he got a permit for the only thing that DC will still issue him a permit for, post-Heller v. DC.

Spending weeks and jumping through numerous hoops just to register a .22 revolver that must be kept locked and unloaded in his home until an intruder points a .45 semi-auto at him isn’t a victory for anyone but the gun grabbers.

When the left makes a small gain, banning a certain gun, a type of ammo, or passing a new tax, they don’t complain that it wasn’t enough. They crow victory and proclaim: “It’s a good first step!”
We can do the same. It ain’t much, but it’s a good first step toward reclaiming our freedoms.
Multiple thugs are running around DC with Uzis and semi-automatic pistols and he only gets the “right” to have a revolver! Head shot between the eyes is his only alternative.
I just hope he remembers to store the gun in a disassembled condition with each piece locked in a separate D.C.-approved rotary combination safe, and each bullet stored separately, at least 10 feet from each other or any piece of the firearm. Note that each bullet must also be stored in a disassembled condition, with each casing, slug, and powder charge kept in separate compartments of a fireproof container with a keyed lock, each bullet’s components in a separate container.

Depending on when and where I eat, it does revolve. I ate at Fatburger on Sunday afternoon, and it was definitely revolving. Well worth it, though. Best $7 you can spend in 15 minutes.

I look at this one as a mixed bag. Yes, he finally got to register his .22 revolver. What I take exception to is that he had to be fingerprinted and take a proficiency test to keep it in his HOME. When I bought both of my semi-autos I did have to do the thumbprint thing when I purchased them, but there was no comprehensive fingerprinting or testing done until I actually took the class and applied for my conceal carry permit.

Good for Mr. Heller. The next three steps are (1) to get the “no semiautomatic” regulation thrown out, (2) to get the “locked or disassembled” regulation thrown out (both of which fly directly in the face of Justice Scalia’s opinion), and (3) to get “shall issue” concealed carry passed and implemented in D.C. with nationwide reciprocity.
Personally, I carry revolvers for defensive purposes, a .357 Magnum and a .38 Special. If six isn’t enough, I have an 1895 Soviet-built Nagant 7.62X38R revolver that holds 7 rounds. Now if I could just find hollowpoints for it…

DC City Council Passes ‘One Handgun Per Lifetime’ Ordinance
What we need is no registration and nationwide right to carry laws.
If you read the 2nd amendment, no where does it imply that the goverment has a right to regulate what type, how many, or where or how they must be stored. The constitution is silent on the possession or use of cars.
The DC Gov’t (as well has many others) and SCOTUS has overstepped their bounds. The 2nd amendment says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
SCOTUS made a step in the right direction regarding the militia part, but allowing a local or federal legislator to mandate what kind, or how it’s stored is overstepping. ((IMHO)
Granted there is no need for an individual to own an RPG or such, but an individual firearm regardless of type or caliber is protected. There are laws on the books that adequately address crimes commited with the use of guns. If you shoot someone, you can be tried under the various assault, murder etc. laws. If you shoot and damage anothers personal property, there are criminal as well as civil statutes for redress.
The gun control laws are nothing more than an attempt to protect society as a whole, by eliminating the weapon of choice of a few criminals. To ban guns based on a shooting, is akin to banning cars based on that UNC muslim killing people for islam with his SUV. Didn’t see a liberal rush to ban cars after that, did you?

FamilyMan, I hope the elitists in DC government see it as plural, but I’m not holding my breath. It’s already been proven that the DC City Council, the Mayor, and the Police Chief can’t read. They view the Constitution and the Heller decision as nothing more than unquilted toilet tissue. They certainly won’t be hindered by a little ole ’s.’
I don’t consider the hoops one has to jump through to be allowed to register (which makes it a privilege and not a right) only a revolver a victory. One of many reasons I thank God for letting me live in Idaho. Anyone entering my domicile without my permission will be met with either a 12 gauge with double 00 buckshot or my XD compact 45. Cal ACP with 230 grain hollow points. All depends which I can get to the quickest to follow my military training aiming at center of mass until the threat is neutralized. I still say the Mayor and gang ruling the District of Columbia is in contempt of the highest court of the land and needs to suffer the consequences.

It’s also pathetic that 4 judges out of 9 refused, out of their own political misguidedness, to affirm what the amendment actually says. Or worse yet, that 1 out of 3 on the DC District Court said that since DC residents aren’t state residents, they aren’t covered by the Bill of Rights at all.
A right has been turned into a priveledge. Would we be cheering if he got a “free speech permit”?
When we’re all like Alaska and Vermont, then it’ll be time to celebrate. For now, it’s time to push on and start suing all the other dictatorial nanny-state tyrant-lites out there. Like Daley and Bloomberg.
And maybe, just maybe, we’ll eventually get a Supreme Court wise enough to recognize “arms” covers everything short of “ordnance” – and who recognize that free armed societies are safe, polite societies.

Would someone please clear this up for me? If Obama is elected, and if he can put a couple of Supremes on the bench, then the Second Ammendment can be repealed? My guns confiscated?
Well, mushroom, regardless of whether or not he CAN, isn’t it scary enough to know he’ll even try? You can flush all of that balloon juice he spews on the campaign trail and just look at his anti-2A voting record. At the very least, he’ll attempt to stack SCOTUS against the 2A. He’s already stated that he’d like to outlaw carry permits and while in IL he voted to ban gun shops within 5 miles of schools, bars, churches, day care centers, dumpsters, dissed hos and elsewhere. OK, I exaggerated with the last part of my list, but you get my point. The only place his administration will allow a gun shop is in the middle of some prairie dog town in central Montana.
Check out pg 43 of the 2008 Dem National Plan below. They will try to revive a Federal Assault Weapons Ban and you can be assured it will be more onerous than the first and without a sunset date. If that doesn’t work, watch for ammunition bans. It will be ugly.

They will probably try the ammunition bans first. Their fallback will be an onerous tax on ammunition that will make it prohibitive for most people to buy it in any sustainable quantities past personal protection and hunting usage. You would have to either sacrifice other areas of your budget or make darn good money to shoot for pleasure or go hunting. The results to the gun industry would be devastating as a lot of folks would not purchase any more guns due to the exorbitant cost of ammo. Ammo has already seen huge price increases in the last year. Most of this has been due to commodity pricing for metals.
There would also be a negative effect on wildlife conservation as gun and ammo purchases are covered under the Pittman-Robertson Act. The Federal Aid in Wildlife Resoration Act, better known as the Pittman-Robertson Act, was passed by Congress in 1937. This law placed an 11 percent excise tax on rifles, shotguns and ammunition. In 1970, Congress amended the act to include a 10 percent tax on handguns and archery equipment. There have been billions of dollars in revenue generated since the Act’s inception. This money goes to each state to be used for conservation of all species, not just game, and promotes hunter safety and other programs for outdoor usage.
The best defenses are to only vote for strict constitutionalist candidates and to join the NRA if you are currently not a member. I am a proud Life member and firmly believe in Charlton Heston’s words “…from my cold, dead hands!”
