Wow: Bolt runs 19.30 in the 200 meters
The track fans in my family are buzzing over Jamaican Usain Bolt’s record-breaking Olympic win in the 200 meters today. He ran 19.30, breaking American Michael Johnson’s 1996 record. Fans have already put the winning race video on DailyMotion:

I hope he isn’t on anything, but wow is he fast. When I was watching him in the 100m he actually slowed down intentionally and started celebrating with 15m to go and still broke the world record in the 100m. Scary fast and still very young, if he is clean he has a long and bright future in sprinting.
Well if he is doping bad on him, but if he isn’t, good on him. Man is an amazing creature. It is unbelievable sometimes what humans can endure and do. Consider what the Aztecs and the egyptians did with very little technology. I can believe that anyone can push themselves to be more than they are today and become something great like this guy.

I was in the stadium in Atlanta when Michael Johnson set the 200m record. (I have the out-of-focus picture of the record to prove it–look at the time on the display near the finish line.) That was an incredible race.
I saw Bolt run a preliminary without much effort and thought Johnson’s record was in jeopardy. Looks like I was right.
chapoutier: I know, I wondered what would happen once people really started looking hard at the guy. All he had shown so far was canned speaches. We will see. I don’t think we have seen all the information on him yet.

Yes, it does. I’ve run my share of 200’s. But I haven’t heard of them doing that in decades. Like maybe the ’70s. It would be run out out of “the chute” behind the 100m start and finish beyond the 100m finish line.. into another “chute”. But like I said… I haven’t heard of it being run that way in ages.
Well, his last name is certainly more fitting than, say, “Anvil,” “Brick,” or “Lead.”

Even though his record breaking run in the 100m was great I have no idea why the NYT chose to put Bolt on the front page instead of Phelps. After all, Phelps is an American and Bolt is Jamaican.

To appreciate Bolt’s 100 meter record of 9.69, you have to consider that had he not slowed up near the end, he may have done it in 9.61 or close to it. Then consider that this mark shatted the 9.83 (I think!) that Ben Johnson, loaded up on steroids, did in the 1988 Seoul games. Johnson shattered the record and at the time the steroids were discovered in his system, some track and field guys were saying that only somebody on the juice could do anything remotely similar to what Johnson accomplished while on the juice. And along comes Bolt, with no steroids in his system, and makes Ben Johnson’s Seoul race look like little league stuff. That is how great Bolt is. He did 9.69 while not running a great last ten yards.
BTW, FloJo’s 1988 marks still tops the womens’ records. And it makes you wonder if FloJo was on the juice.

No, Bolt’s 100m run was last week. NYT chose to place a foreigner on the cover rather than an American who won 8 golds.
The Times could’ve split the days up and put Phelps front page one day and Bolt the next or visa vesra; whatever.
I’m amazed at this guy’s speed and I hope that he is clean.

Seriously, I used to run the 440 yard dash in high school(before they invented the meter) and it took me more like 52 to 55ish seconds. That’s not quite twice the distance in way more than twice the time. The dude is a rocket!

Bolt is like 6′4″ or 6′5″ too. I’m planning on asking my AZ Cardinals to fly him out and see if he can catch a football or defend a pass.

Micheal Johnson is about to lose another record. Jeremy Wariner is a good bet to run under 43 seconds for 400 meters.
German magazine DER SPIEGEL today cites German sprinter Tobias Unger with saying that Bolt has never been tested for doping although all the other sprinters have been tested multiple times. The article implies that Bolt’s “entertainment value” makes him such a valuable asset that the IOC has an interest in shielding him.
Jürgen Mallow, who is the trainer of the German track-and-field team, told DER SPIEGEL that, while one single German athlete has been tested 29 times since January of this year (and always came up clean), only six tests have been done within the entire Jamaican Olympic Team.

For heaven’s sake, he did not even bother to tie his running shoes before breaking the world record. He ran the entire race with his shoes untied. How likely is it, that we are really seeing a “clean Olympics” this time?
Absolutely amazing. It is amazing to watch a person run that fast. I think he’s on something too. But I hope he’s not.
I wonder if he can catch a football. If he could, he’s worth about a billion dollars. The problem with most track stars is that they can’t catch.

It’s part of the attraction – you have to qualify well to get a “good” lane, then use some strategy to make the best use of what lane you’re in. (Lane 2 is too tight, lanes 7 and 8 you can’t see if the field is catching up, that sort of thing.)
Why doesn’t affirmative action apply to sports? I can’t help but notice all the racers were one particular skin tone.

My hat is off to you. I had to endure that torture ONCE. I played football as was a linebacker at 225 pounds. At the start of the wonderful 3 a days in August, we all came in in good shape ready to get timed in the 40 yard dash. I had my time down to a 4.7, and was ready to kick some butt.
Our coach decided to change things up a bit at camp. We would not be timed in the 40, but in the 440. I had run distance to keep in shape, and had the 40 down pat. How hard can that be?
We were running with the defensive backs, some of whom were on the track team. Aftewr the first 50 40 yards, it dawqned on me that this was not a “pace” race. It was an all out sprint. So I ccranked up the speed. After the first 200 yards, my legs started to get that rubbery feeling. At 300 yards, my muscles were screaming (yes, you could actually hear them). With about 50 yards to go, I wasn’t sure what waas holding me up, and thought my legs were going to collapse. Coming in second with a dismal time of 64 seconds (it was hot and humid), I went to my knees. That was a mistake, since my stomach was still about 20 yards behind coming at full speed. Good thing I had a light breakfast.
I think the quarter mile was designed for people that truly enjoy pain. It is an evil race for those of us not thrilled by the prospect of a dating a dominatrix.
Been watching everything aloha guy, and enjoying all of it.

We get the Korean and Mandarin feeds here in Honolulu, and I’ve seen more table tennis and badminton than I thought possible. If you missed China versus Austria in beach volleyball, you missed an eye opener. The game was good too.

After having not raced in almost 20 years, I got back into it and found out that the cream of the 40 year old crop runs a 50 point 400m on an average day.. and a 49 on the best day…. also a 22 second 200m.. in fact.. the best 50 yr old runs a 23.9 200m in my part of the country.
Yeah.. that’s wicked fast (Bolt’s time) and if someone goes under 43 in the 400m, that will be pretty damned amazing given how far ahead of the field Michael Johnson was when he ran.
As for me… I eeked out a 49.6 as college freshman. Didn’t compete after that (until recently). Wish I did though, but that’s how it goes.

This thread really put a smile on my face MM. I ran ran track in high school and had a school record in the 400 meters. I still love watching track, and I never thought Michael Johnson’s record would be beat in my lifetime. 19.32 was just so insanely faster then anything seen before or since. Bolt is an absolute freaky kind of an athlete.
I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer here, but I really hope Bolt and Phelps are clean. I used to worship Marion Jones. I also suspect FloJo and Lance Armstrong were cheaters. I haven’t been as excited about the Olympics this year, because I fear that most of the athletes are juicing. It would really be a blow to American and Jamaica if Phelps and Bolt are cheaters. I hope for the best and congratulate both for making their marks on sports history.
Running a turn can increase one’s speed.
Same here. In Phelp’s case, he’s built for swimming. He’s 6′ 4″ tall, but has a 6′ 7″ “wingspan”. Huge hands and size 14 feet, so he has paddles and flippers. Bolt has that super long stride.
It struck me though how many of the women sprinters were “back” from forced layoffs due to either refusing drug tests or failing them.
But let’s keep results under wraps for those of us in odd time zones, ok, MM?
Not too many track guys have been great in the NFL but there have been exceptions. Bullet Bob Hayes, Tokyo 1964 Gold medal. was a superstar with the Dallas Cowboys. He reinvented the position of split end. Willie Gault, who was a top quality track guy, had a superb career with the Bears and Raiders. Renaldo Nehemiah was reasonably good with the 49ers.Daryl Green was a star track guy and became a Hall of Fame DB with the Redskins. He will be forever famous for actually running down Tony Dorsett in the greatest defensive play in NFL history. But there have been notable busts such as John Carlos. Many of the track guys are too wiry in physique for NFL football. If Ray Lewis tackled them, they would looks the Pillsbury doughboy when Ray got done with them.
Its not doping that matters but getting caught doping.

Re: running 200 meters on the straight, 40 years ago, when we still ran 220 yards, it was typically run out of the “chute” Most tracks were inside the football stadium and had 220 yard straights extended, some on both sides of the track. Closed end stadiums prevent this.

Your information or assumption is wrong. Some runners run the curve better than others but no one runs a curve faster than he/she can run the straight.
Re: Speculaton that Bolt uses PEDS (Performance Enhancing Drugs). Although many “world class” runners have been revealed to have used drugs and there is rampant suspicion, there is no evidence Bolt is using. He is not suspected in the track community. He and the entire Jamacian team have been tested repeatedly in the last two months.
I offer as credentials that I am former track athlete and have been a Master level Track & Field official for more than 40 years, including working six Olympic Trials and the 1996 Olympics.
Bolt is exceptionally large for a spinter, especially 100 meters. Tall runners typically are slower out of the blocks but once underway do have the advantage of longer natural stride. Bolt took 41 steps in the 100 meters. Most 100 meter runners require 44/45 steps.
I was standing 10 meters from the finish line in Atlanta ‘96 when Johnson set the 200 meter WR at 19.32. Until this week, I did not expect to see that record broken in my lifetime.
However, I was not surprised, based on Bolt’s pre-Olympic performance and his toying with his opponents during the prelims, that he broke Michael Johnson’s 200 meter record 19.32.
If Bolt returns to running the 400 meters, where he ran 45 seconds at age 16, Michael Johnsons 440 meter record 43.18 is in jeopardy.
Shawn Johnson would require 163…but the blur would be amusing.
Some really great stories and incredible performances at this year’s Olympics. Bolt is amazing to watch.

I didn’t realize – he is such a clown -
literally – he clowns around right before he gets into the starting blocks.
He was quite humble in the interview afterwards, however – saying that he never believed he would break the world record.
It is hard to believe, that we’ll ever see anyone break the world record he set today. Just incredible.

Assuming both Phelps and Bolt are clean, I have to say Bolt is my star of the games. Running is as close to a universal sport as there is. So winning the 100 and 200, in the manner in which he did, is more impressive to me.
Phelps is a nice guy, but there are too many events for swimmers to medal in. Maybe track ought to have a 50m, 150m and 250, race. Maybe track could have back pedaling and skipping too.
I wish Michael well and am sure he will make his millions, but I will never forget the image of Bolt effortlessly running away from the field.
Bolt is a physical anomaly that track fans have been aware of since he was a teenager. We were not suprised that he broke the 200 m record, just that he did it so young..
I think his post-race exuberance can be forgiven. Anyone who can run that fast has my permission to celebrate any way he chooses, short of mooning the crowd. I believe his pre-race antics are his way of combating nervousness. He was pleasantly serious in his post-race interview.
I predict he break Johnson’s 43.18 400 m record next year.
Now the IOC president comes out to criticize Bolt’s post-race behavior. Apparently, absolute joy is not allowed when quiet dignity is expected. After all, we can’t show such freedom when the host country is so repressive.
The IOC members are a very modest lot, indeed. They seldom brag about all the personal wealth they accumulate while accepting bribes from all the potential Olympic host committees.
Fast he is, but all I could think of, watching him finish the 100, was that arrogance like that will end up in the NFL.
Of course, running on the world’s fastest track is not the same as getting hit by a 275 lb linebacker going at full speed. That’ll slow you down a smidge.
I agree with Klaatu. I sat there thinking “what a showoff”. I appreciate a good athlete, but I cannot stand a poor sport. He never once turned around to congratulate any of the other runners. He acted as if he was the only person out there. If I remember correctly, Michael Johnson was the same way. Why does that seem to be the case with the male track and field athletes?
