It’s Smarmy and Smirky ‘08!

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 23, 2008 09:20 AM

Scroll for updates…3:03pm Eastern Obama takes the stage in Springfield IL as U2’s “Oh, You Look So Beautiful” plays…so humble…Obama: “Joe Biden is that rare mix. He has brought change to Washington, but Washington hasn’t changed him…He’s stared down dictators…He is uniquely suited to be my partner as we work to put our country back on track…He is one of the finest public servants of our time.” Obama touts Biden’s blue-collar background, Catholic background, his stutter, his family tragedy (the car accident that killed his wife and daughter), brain aneurysm…(Obama neglects to mention his two losing presidential bids)…Biden will deliver “straight talk.” Heh. That’s the danger, isn’t it?

And now, let me introduce to you…snort: First gaffe of Obama-Biden ‘08!

He said he “wasn’t the guy.” Starting his VP candidacy off with a lie.

Let the fun begin.

The Springfield, IL announcement takes place at 3pm EST. Video clips and any gaffes from the gaffe-tastic duo will be here.

The McCain camp was ready.

Oh, and so much for the Magic Text Message, which, as Ed Morrissey points out, arrived at 4:50am Eastern. Now, we know what the text message sign-up was really about. Not about being all-inclusive and galvanizing the hip kids with cool technology. It’s a mega-fund-raising call list, as commenter Gwillie points out.

Head fake.

Biden does bring one thing to the table that Obama lacks. That is the ability to talk off the cuff ad nauseum. This combined with a great deal more experience may in fact make that ticket stronger. That being said Biden also has a tendency toward foot in mouth disease that could flare at any moment.

In an odd way this balances the democratic ticket. Obama could have done worse.
Let us hope that McCain does well with his pick.
Still I can’t get past the feeling that the whole country has been ripped off in this election. Some days there seems to be a real choice. Other days it is like picking between the gas chamber and the electric chair.

How did we get to the point that all of the candidates/running-mates (so far) are from the Congress with the lowest approval rating in history? So, they’re failing miserably in the Senate and choose to reward them with the Presidency? Well, I suppose the positive note of any of this, whether McCain or Obama wins, is that more slots will open up in the Senate in order to get some new blood in there.
Thank God for the “write-in” option on the ballot.

I think he should pick Sarah Palin. It would bring oil drilling to the front of all the issues. She is the governor of the largest state in the nation. She is solidly pro-life. Many Clinton voters would continue to switch over to the Republican ticket.

ALso, the Weekly Standard is stating that Barack Hussein Obama has all but given up on certain Red States he was hoping to win, such as Florida and Virginia. He is behind in Ohio. So I think Pawlenty would also be a good choice because that would basically give Minnesota and Wisconsin to McCain, guaranteeing that the Obamunist would lose.

Too good not to quote (and attribute):

Biden is the Elton John of American politics. One day he had a steel-wool comb over of what I presume was back hair, and the next he had a full head of Ken Doll-like plugs.

But personal grooming isn’t everything. Just ask John Edwards.

The more interesting thing about Joe Biden is that he is a world-class plagiarist. He stole a speech nearly verbatim during his 1987 campaign for president from British politician Neal Kinnock, and was savaged by Michael Dukakis, possibly costing him the race.

Obama must feel a kinship for this fellow thief of rhetoric. You may recall in February that Obama was hammered for stealing nearly verbatim a speech that Deval Patrick had given a little over a year before. This was the memorable and ironically labeled “Just Words” speech.

Biden apparently had a problem with plagiarism even while in college, so this was hardly a new thing for him.

    If Biden is chosen, I can’t wait to hear some of their convention speeches;

“The only thing we have to fear is… fear itself!”

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

“Four Score and Seven years ago…”

Nothing says “change” like selecting an old fart who has been in Washington for over 30 years.

I just wish Obama would have chosen John Edwards as his VP pick before Edwards got caught in his “indiscretion”.

Dumb and Dumber. Two empty suits. Two phonies. Biden has convinced himself but noone else that he’s a genius. He opens his mouth and is immediately seen as trying to fake sincerity.

Well, the Democrats have got the ultimate plastic candidates. By plastic I mean not only “flexible”, to put it in a good light, but cheap, trashy, poorly made, not something that will last. If McCain can’t beat this pair of dunces he deserves to lose, and if he loses, it won’t be the fault of those of us who are somewhat less than enamored with any of the choices this election.

Shall I quote the NY Slimes this morning? I shall:

He has a long history of making statements that get him in trouble. He was forced to apologize to Mr. Obama almost the moment he entered the race for president after he was quoted as describing Mr. Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” a remark that drew criticism for being racially insensitive. While campaigning in New Hampshire, Mr. Biden said that “you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”

Mr. Biden quit the presidential race this year after barely making a mark; he came in fifth in Iowa. He was forced to quit the 1988 presidential race in the face of accusations that he had plagiarized part of a speech from Neil Kinnock, the British Labor Party leader…

Mitt is a good choice. He is solid on economics, a great public speaker, and did I mention Handsome? That is not important, but it doesn’t hurt. He hasn’t had any major gaffes that I can recall…but I’m sure the dems could find something! I wanted Mitt as the presidential nominee. McCain was my dead last choice. If we have to be “stuck” with McCain, at least we can approve of his VP!

I keep waiting, although I did finally hear the media acknowledge that Obama had no experience in foreign affairs.

I just wonder if they are going to make a big a deal about this as they did with Cheney on the Bush ticket.

Doubt it, except as a positive thing.

Biden is not a running mate – he’s a sidekick. A buffoonish clod that makes the hero of the story seem all the more heroic. Biden’s shortcomings will only serve to make Obama look good by comparison.

Biden has been the perenial bridesmaid at the Presidential altar. He’s been running for President for over 20 years, and has never mustered more than nominal support from Democrats let alone the American electorate.
