Biden flashback: Wrong on the surge
I noted this in my year-end essay last December on the surge, the military, and the media. Worth noting again as the Obama camp hypes Joe Biden’s great foreign policy and strategic expertise. They were both wrong. Phenomenally wrong.
Here’s a reminder of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s resolution opposing the surge, which passed 12-9 on Jan. 25:
Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., the panel’s chairman, said the legislation is “not an attempt to embarrass the president. … It’s an attempt to save the president from making a significant mistake with regard to our policy in Iraq.”
…Biden, who sponsored the measure with Hagel and Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the measure is aimed at getting the administration’s attention. He noted that Bush has said he will be moving forward with his Iraq plans he outlined in a Jan. 10 address regardless of what Congress says.
The measure “is designed to let the president know that there are many in both parties, Democrats and Republicans, that believe a change in our mission to go into Baghdad — in the midst of a civil war — as well as a surge in ground troops … is the wrong way to go, and I believe it will have the opposite — I repeat — opposite effect the president intends,” Biden said.

The far left always come up with talking points, but can not seem to come up with facts that back up the talking points.
They talk about McCain and Bush being wrong on Iraq, but fail to talk about the House and Senate votes.

Some have that opinion. OK. But right or wrong, we went to war as a country, which was authorized by congress (no take-backs). If President Bush had caved to the enormous pressure from the people who grew tired of this action and the politicians seeking to enhance their own standing by bashing him and our soldiers, where would Iraq and the Middle East be today? Not better to be sure.
Being a critic is easy. Being steadfast is a noble character trait. George Bush will be remembered as a great President for this. Ironically, it’s thanks to people like you, lgm, that history will reflect the shining resolve of his decision to advance the ideals and values of the American people.

Just saw queen bee Pelosi on Disgrace the Nation or Meet the Depressed, not sure but Brokjaw was moderating. She figided, fumed and fumbled badly, especially when Brokaw gave her poll numbers indicating Americans favor McCain over Obama for Commander in Chief 50% to 39. She tried the argument that the worst decision America made was going into Iraq and McCain supported it. Brokaw interrupted her and said but the poll is taken now and people have apparently supports McCain’s leadership as Commander in Chief over Obama. It was then she had an Obama moment when her talking points and telepromter went to hell in a handbasket. She was totally unglued and inarticulate.

Biden and Obama – will obviously be pressed to explain their stances against the surge – during the next few months.
As been pointed out in other postings in this blog, they have both supported surges for Afghanistan.
I have strong feelings about Iraq as most of you have – but I’m not going to get into some stupid academic debate or name-calling about it with some other commentor with an opposing view who is just trying to egg me on anyway – who has made an opposing comment of about five words.

What, even under the best of conditions the US military can achieve, can the US expect to “get” out of its immeasurable investment of blood and treasure in Iraq?
If the answer is “an ally,” please explain how this can be so.
If the answer is “a bulwark against Iran,” please explain how this can be so.
If the answer is “another Kuwait,” please explain why we bothered. (If the explanation includes reference to the Bush administration’s complete misunderstanding of the chances for Western concepts of freedom to succeed, or even be desired, in an Islamic culture, pass Go and proceed straight to the Oval Office.)

Funny, I do not recall either of these rationales being brought up by Bush in the lead up to the war. Probably because the public would have never supported a war to protect our interest in oil and/or puff ourselves up to Putin. Now if you are saying that these are favorable consequences of the war, that is one thing, but the discussion is whether or not we were right to go in in the first place.
And a lot of good our supposed gain in street cred as the lone super power did in Georgia. Seems Russia has its own ideas.
Biden will be invaluable to any future president’s foreign policy.
Biden should be calling them, telling them what they should do in that realm of foreign policy. The correct course of action would then be to do the opposite of what Biden wanted.

Regarding Joe Biden for VP, I believe that nominating anyone who has withdrawn a previous candidacy on the grounds of plagiarism and lying about academic achievement is risky business.
I’m also puzzled by the choice of a guy who dropped out of his latest candidacy after placing only fifth in Iowa.
In effect, weren’t the people of Iowa judging Biden as a competent executive when they placed him so low?
Self-reflection is not usually a politician’s strong suit. Realizing they were wrong and admiting it would be nearly impossible. Both Obama and Biden were wrong on the surge, but birds of a feather do flock together.

More fun for an Obama-Biden ticket, if it comes to pass…
Obama, when the whole Don Imus controversy flared up:
“I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus,” Obama told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude.”
Obama said he appeared once on Imus’ show two years ago, and “I have no intention of returning.”
Biden, of course, is one of Imus’ most frequent guests (as is McCain). He offered a disapproving statement at that time, of course, but it will be a fun question for that first press availability: Was Obama right to call for your friend Don Imus to be fired?

Biden is the ultimate Washington, DC insider. Gotta love Obama’s view of “change”.
McCain’s campaign ads should be really interesting. There seems to be a wealth of topics to choose from in order to identify Obama or Biden as the substance-lacking airbags that they really are.
I know it will take some time, lgm, but if you just keep on repeating that phrase over and over, eventually you will come to believe it. Whatever you do, don’t let facts get in the way of supporting those things you want to believe in.
Nancy Pelosi was on 60 Minutes today talking about how the surge has failed because it basically succeeded in ways that were not intended – or something to that effect. That would be like calling someone a failure at investing because they bought a safe stock instead of a high-performing stock, and then made a fortune on it.
But the comment that really drew my attention was this one she made about why she likes natural gas:

C’mon, Chap, do you really think the “public” would have tolerated a non-military response to 9/11, given the state of raw nerves and emotional over-load we were experiencing in the months following the attacks? This country wanted revenge against a political enemy and Iraq fit the bill. We did the right thing there, for the Iraqis and ourselves.
