Security scare in Denver; Update: Doubts

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 25, 2008 08:28 PM

Hmmm. (Hat tip - David Harsanyi):

Federal authorities have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon amid reports that a fortunate traffic stop by Aurora Police may have disrupted an assassination attempt against Barack Obama.

KUSA-TV is reporting that two men have been arrested on weapons charges after the traffic stop early Sunday.

The first man, identified by the station as Tharin Gartrell, 28, was charged with suspicion of being a felon in possession of a weapon after police found two rifles, a high-powered scope and methamphetamine in his car after the traffic stop.

When police accompanied Gartrell to his hotel in Glendale, a second man jumped from a window and was injured in a four-story fall, according to the station. That man was then arrested, but has not been identified by police.

There are a lot of nutballs here.

***

A commenter asks for a link to a separate incident involving a man arrested for carrying weapons into a hotel where Nancy Pelosi is staying. Here.
Authorities have determined the incident was unrelated to the DNC or any Secret Service protectees.

***

Update: Dan Riehl notes doubts about whether the incident “was anything other than some kind of general animosity and no actual plan to do anything.”

Update: More details on the alleged plot.

Rocky mountain news removed the story. Here is a link to another source.

Wyoming hunter who accidentally caused a security concern at the Grand Hyatt hotel Saturday said he’s sorry for the problems he caused and didn’t know the Democratic National Convention was in town.

When Joseph Calanchini walked into the Grand Hyatt hotel with 2 rifles and 2 pistols Saturday around 4:00 pm, Denver Police evacuated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from the hotel until they arrested Calanchini and made sure it was safe for Pelosi to return.

“I didn’t even know the DNC was in town. I don’t watch the news,” said Joseph Calanchini from the Denver City Jail where he’s being held on bond. “If I had known, I would have done things differently. It was a simple mistake.”

Calanchini, who talked to 9Wants to Know from the Denver City Jail, says he had the weapons because he’s getting ready to go on a hunting safari trip in Limpopo Basin, South Africa on August 28. He planned to hunt warthog, impala, baboon and jackals with a friend there.

Hmm jackals and baboons. No wonder the DNC was scared.

He says he had just picked up his rifles from the Sportsman’s Warehouse and had them in a locked gun case when he checked in at the Grand Hyatt. The clerk checking him in noticed the rifle case and called security.

“I’m amazed. It’s not like they were illegal weapons, they were all registered to me,” said Calanchini. “It was bad timing.”

Original Rocky Mountain News Article from the AP

Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley said 29-year-old Joseph Calanchini of Pinedale, Wyo., faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon after police officers at the Grand Hyatt hotel noticed him carrying a rifle-type case while checking in. Calanchini did not have a concealed weapons permit, said Lance Clem, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

Authorities were investigating a report that Calanchini was in town on business and had had the weapons worked upon, including mounting of site scopes, to prepare for an upcoming hunting trip.

Calanchini remained at Denver City Jail today on $10,000 bond, said Denver Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Steckman.

    CRS Sec. 38-118(a)(4)

When such person is a collector or licensed dealer displaying or transporting such weapon for display or sale, or a citizen transporting such weapon for purpose of sale or repair to or from a place of sale or repair; all firearms so displayed or transported shall be unloaded at all times

So he was well within his rights.

Wonder why they disappeared the article?

I am a little confused in the Denver Police Departments view of a threat. Last week a dead Canadian Muslim with a pound of cyanide in his room (and later reports says he had some Jihadist issues) you get the old nothing to see move along response. A man with weapons he is transporting after being worked on for hunting season in a horror-of-horrors a weapons case (probably had the weapons unloaded too) checking into the same hotel as her holiness the Queen of the House and savior of the planet and its panic in the streets. Well so much for those pesky 2nd Amendment rights just affirmed by the SCOTUS. Man I hope he has a really good lawyer to chase after this violation of his rights. Now we probably have a couple of armed bumbling drug dealers being billed as lethal cunning hit men in the form of the Day of the Jackal. Wonder what action they will misinterpret next to send the SWAT teams in with guns blazing?

    FYI just before I go:

Local news radio says the ones arrested today are White Supremacists.

9Wants to Know has learned the Gartrell arrest led investigators to the Rockies Inn at Evans Avenue and Interstate 25 and information learned there led them to the Cherry Creek Hotel.

“We’re trying to figure out what these guys had in mind,” said an unnamed federal official.

At least one of the men made some kind of threat against Sen. Barack Obama.

Sources tell NBC the two men had tattoos and jewelry popular with white supremacists

“This is a methamphetamine and firearms case that arose from a traffic stop made by an Aurora Police officer.

Officials tell 9Wants to Know the guns, ammunition and scopes were concerning because of the hour of the arrest and the suspect’s previous criminal history.

“There is no reason for someone [with a criminal record] to have rifles with scopes,” said an unidentified source.

An official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, says there is concern about the arrest considering the Democratic National Convention kicked off in Denver on Monday.

People convicted of a felony are not allowed to possess guns.

Gartrell faces charges of drug possession and possession of materials to make amphetamines

    Gartrell has numerous drug-related arrests.

In December 2006, he pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance and received a deferred sentence.

Authorities tell NBC News they are skeptical there was anything other than some kind of general animosity and no actual plan to do anything.

    Good grief.

You know, eight years ago I took my son down to Pennsylvania Avenue to see the inaugural Bush Inaugural motorcade. Unlike Clinton in 92 and Reagan in 80 — the two others I’ve hauled myself down to — it was a grim and joyless affair, with closed limousines whizzing by and nary a wave or celebratory moment (not that I was celebrating, but…) I think an atmosphere that leads to overstatement - and palpable threats — on the civilian side and an understandable paranoia on the law enforcement side diminishes us all. I understand your jab at BO here, but the unfortunate truth is that whomever wins is likely to be secluded behind bulletproof glass come January.

Another insane quote from a liberal retard. A criminal record + a rifle w/scope does not necessarily suggest further criminal intent. It is getting close to hunting season in a lot of states. Making comments about killing Sen. Obama are criminal, but should be no more so than if they were directed at you or me. Sadly, our leaders are given more proactive protection than the common taxpayer. We have to wait until a crime has been committed upon our person to file a complaint in most cases. Unless we were killed by the threat maker. Then someone else gets to notify the authorities. I’m certain that was the vision of the founding fathers and the early pioneers who left ‘class’ societies to come here to be free. It is also part of the justification for the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.
