“South Side Girl;” Update: Message – Michelle loves America!; daughters on stage
The DNC is now airing its kinder, gentler Michelle Obama video.
It’s titled “South Side Girl.”
Reminding the American public about her Chicago roots and ties.
Did someone maybe think this (Ayers..Wright..Rezko…UChicago hospital dumping plan…etc…etc…etc…) might not be a good idea?
10:33pm Eastern…Michelle’s brother, Craig Robinson, is speaking. Vodkapundit’s Steve Green just quipped at our blogger central: “Why isn’t one of Barack’s brother speaking?”

10:39pm Eastern…She’s reading professionally from the teleprompter…but you know, she’s just an ordinary, civilian mom. Just like you.

I stand here today at the crosscurrents of that history – knowing that my piece of the American Dream is a blessing hard won by those who came before me. All of them driven by the same conviction that drove my dad to get up an hour early each day to painstakingly dress himself for work. The same conviction that drives the men and women I’ve met all across this country:
People who work the day shift, kiss their kids goodnight, and head out for the night shift – without disappointment, without regret – that goodnight kiss a reminder of everything they’re working for.
The military families who say grace each night with an empty seat at the table. The servicemen and women who love this country so much, they leave those they love most to defend it.
The young people across America serving our communities – teaching children, cleaning up neighborhoods, caring for the least among us each and every day.
People like Hillary Clinton, who put those 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, so that our daughters – and sons – can dream a little bigger and aim a little higher.
People like Joe Biden, who’s never forgotten where he came from, and never stopped fighting for folks who work long hours and face long odds and need someone on their side again.
All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.
That is the thread that connects our hearts. That is the thread that runs through my journey and Barack’s journey and so many other improbable journeys that have brought us here tonight, where the current of history meets this new tide of hope.
That is why I love this country.
Said with such practiced emotion. Such a professional performer.

10:56pm Eastern. Oh, dear. The Obama daughters are on stage talking with daddy via remote while he’s campaigning in Kansas City. Lots of “Hi, Daddy!” “Mommy looks cute!”

Ted Kennedy is going to get more media play tomorrow than Michelle is. Prety stupid move on team O’s part to put them on the same night.
How long before Chris Matthews pronounces Michelle Obama’s speech the greatest thing he has ever heard and says all American students should have it as required reading? How long before Charlie Gibson pronounces the specch to be extraordinary? How long before Robin Roberts announces that any criticism of the Michelle Obama speech is racist? Before Diane Sawyer says any criticism of the speech is sexist? before Brian Williams call the speech historic? before Matt Lauer overdoses on lavish sycophantic praise of the speech?
The most sickening sentence of the speech was Ms. Obama’s insincere praise of military families. The Obamas could have served bud did not. They insist that being a “community organizer” is better than military service. The Obamas have never met a military family and would disdain military families if they ever met one (which they won’t).
Looked like a 7 year old threw him off balance. How effective do you think this guy can be negotiating with the likes of Medvedyev? Putin?
How about the people who start businesses and work their butts off 80+ hours a week so that they can employ 20 people and provide benefits to them?
Oh yeah, they don’t count because they’re “rich”.

I don’t understand how these pundits can seriously think that a scripted DNC speech containing the line “I love America” is going to wipe away MO’s previously (and repeatedly voiced) displeasure with America.
Come on…she could have just given the Sermon on the Mount and you jackals* here would be finding fault.
I thought it was a lovely speech and seemed really heartfelt. And the kids are adorable.
*I use that term with all affection.
I think it’s funny that one of the goals of the speech was to “humanize” her. Now all the commentators are asking whether or not it worked. Answer: if you keep making the point that this was a humanizing speech, then she’s still not humanized. She still the creature from the blue lagoon as far as I’m concerned.
Nice touch putting Barack in that room with the typical white people.

Pretty impressive seeing an African American woman and two beautiful African American little girls up on that stage waiting for their father to be nominated for President of the United States when you don’t ever see any African American faces in any Republican Conventions.
