DNC night 2 open thread; Update: She won’t back down, scattered boos; “The time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose.”
Scroll for updates…
I can’t really take much more of it — and it’s only the second night of Democrat speechifying.
Mark Warner’s delivering the keynote. Hillary’s much-hyped healing moment/catharsis/PUMA pow-wow will follow a bit after that in the 10pm Eastern hour.
Ed and Allah are liveblogging at HA.
Wake me up when she cackles.
***
Apparently, the Great Phrase of the Night is Bob Casey’s line that McCain is a “sidekick,” not a “maverick.”
Zzzzzzz.
***
CNN reports that Bill Clinton will skip Obama’s Invesco Field speech.
This elder statesman thing is a drag, eh, Billy Boy?
***
10:43pm Eastern. She makes her grand entrance. Dressed in orange creamsicle. Bill and Hill’s eyes both watering. Deafening applause. The music’s blaring: “She won’t back down.”
More applause. Whistles. Roars. Michelle Obama’s gritting her teeth and applauding.
I’m here tonight as a proud mother. Proud Senator. Proud American. And proud supporter of Barack Obama. “The time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose.”
Michelle and Joe Biden approve in the stands.
You can hear scattered boos.
“We are on the same team and none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines. This is a fight for the future and it is a fight we must win together.”
Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like people might be getting removed from the floor?
Hill: “No way, no how, no McCain. Barack Obama is my candidate and he must be our president.”
Michelle and Hill: Who would win in the glacial staring contest?
“You made me laugh and yes, you even made me cry.”
She’s telling all her old campaign victim anecdotes. Gives a shout out to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits.
Ewww.
A nice tribute to the son of Stephanie Tubbs Jones and the widow of Bill Gwaltney.
A galling reference to Chinese dirty money and private profits over the public good.
Michelle O can barely get through this. Hasn’t cracked a smile yet.
Were you in this campaign just for me or were you in it for Marine, single mom struggling cancer, families on minimum wage…we need leaders…who can tap into American optimism…blah blah..Bill is beaming…there are no limits to what is possible in America. This will not be easy. Progress never is. But it will be impossible if we don’t fight to put a Democrat back in the White House.
Well, this will probably seal the deal. Another cutaway to the new ice queen, Michelle O.
Hillary gives her hubby a shout-out. STanding ovation. Michelle O and Joe B gingerly clapping again. Is that fear in their eyes?
A dig at Obama’s differences with her on health care: “I can’t wait until Barack Obama signs a law that covers every single American in this country.”
Hillary praises Michelle O and Joe B. He’s pragmatic, tough, and wise. They will be a great team for our country.
“John McCain is my colleague and my friend. He has served with honor and courage, but we don’t need four more years of the last eight years.”
11:05pm Eastern. She’s quoting Harriet Tubman. “Keep going.” Almost lapsing into her Selma accent. “We’re Americans and we don’t quit…we don’t have a moment to lose or a moment to spare.” Her accent, whatever it is, is getting thicker.
Over.
Forced smiles all around.

McCain adviser Carly Fiorina is on Fox playing the gender card to the hilt and making a hard sell to dissed Hillary supporters.
Imagine them mustering up the same amount of energy to woo conservatives.

Not sure, but I think my grandmother used to wear one. When she was alive.
PBoilermaker
That’s what playtex used to call all their women’s items … because they “breathed” … showing my age again …
The subject of early 1970s commercials. Your youth is showing.
I was born in the late 70’s.
Don’t hate me because I’m middle aged.
My liveblog: Ladies Night In Nuremberg (aka DNC Nite #2)
So was I. Don’t call me middle aged.
PB, it is something a child-bearing age woman wears for 18 hours and then takes it off. If it is dead, they drank way too much at the party the night before.
I was born in 1959, and if anything I envy your youth.
What if they pick a woman like Palin or Hutchinson or a conservative man who has a record of supporting issues important to women and families?
It doesn’t have to be an either/or scenario.
Geez … sorry folks … didn’t mean to hijack the thread with an old girdle joke …
…
That was an excellent vintage for Red Bordeaux.
To me she brought up everything those questions the D-3 folks, who are mainly Conservative, abhor about the Dems. For example, gay rights. Gay rights and gay marriage are issues that the D-3 majority of most Americans are against, or at the very least not as concerned about as say the economy or amnesty. Thanks Hill!
The other issues she brought up are issues that did not support the theme of Hope and Change from THE ONE. Frank Luntz has been pointing out for over a month now that THE ONE and his people need to define just what it is that he is all about and that the mantra of 4 more years of Bush via McCain is not a good idea to be screaming. Frank has said that this “McCain the Same” stuff is not going to work with those that have still not made up their minds and because of his Maverickness, McCain is in no way logically 4 more years of Bush.
Rush points out all the time that most Americans are not as unhappy with Bush as the MSMLSDs think. Sure we are not happy about amnesty and some other issues, but as a whole we are not inhatred with Bush nearly as much as we are with the Democrat Congress. This mantra is stuck on stupid to me, and I think Hillary knows this.
She gave no definition as to why Barack Hussein Obama has the experience, or depth of character that trumps McCain or her for that matter in order to be President. She made Obiden look like a pansy. There is absolutely no way that the Gaffemaster could trump that speech. Which is what Susan Estrich and Dick the Toesucker said was Hillary’s goal and that was to make the Dems and THE ONE regret choosing Joe. She won round 1! Now, we just have to wait for the knock out punch from Punkin’s sugar Daddy.
Well, I have been educated. However, further discussion of Michelle O’s bulge and the effectiveness of Playtex’s vintage undergarments won’t help her kids.
BT
Chaps, own your middle-agedness.
Sorry for the “off-thread” girdle and pregnancy jokes. I have a bad case of ADBSDD. Attention to Democrat BS Deficit Disorder! Do I qualify for disability under the ADA?
Oh, she knows. However, take one look at an average sampling of the liberal base and the reason she’s “stuck on stupid” is blatantly obvious.
Youth is wasted on the young.
My collie says:
I am a 1959 man myself backwoods conservative, who’s talking about middle aged? Well maybe our vintage, 1959, ages slow, but with a tart tangy kick to it. A living girdle is another of the idiotic inventions of the Space Age generation, much like the indoor trash compactor but without the flies.
Being born in 1959 hardly makes you a fossil, unless the definition of “fossil” has changed.
50 is the new 30.
1959? … you’re all still a bunch of kids …
…
DL = Moses
Is it me or does Mark Warner look like Janet Reno’s bastard
love-child?
oh for the love of god….you would think speech after speech after speech…one person would venture off the dnc/bo talking points.
well maybe not even the libtards are smart enough to realize that no one wants to hear socialist drivel.
PB … got that right …
“Hyphenated Americans” adore socialist drivel. It is their sustenance.
Ahahahaha. Karl Rove’s Plan is working purrrrfectly!
I come from the state that gave birth to Strom Thurmond. I have a long way to go to be considered ancient in these parts.
I am practicing for 2012. Mark Warner is owned by Big Phone!
(He made his money in telecommunications.)
I couldn’t listen. I had the TV on mute, going about my evening biz of feeding and playing with my dogs, every now and then glancing up to the silent screen. Michelle Obama seems even scarier in silence. Oh, the staredown!
Well, I can tell from the comments that I saved myself a heap o’ stomach turns.
God speed, GOP!
Do you have anything to add about Playtex Living Girdles?
Sen. Hillary Clinton is supported by Big Girdle!
figure it out for yourself.
Looks like I have unleashed a girdle monster …
Yeah, once upon a time we passed thru that state and took a stop at Kings Mountain, then moved on west. Nice digs, Miss ya.
Try telling that to Hillary.
My last few posts are evidence of my brain being exposed to endless Democratic drivel. It probably looks a lot like Ted Kennedy’s liver about now.
I believe the new PC term for girdle is shapewear.
If collie is right, McCain will beat Obama.
Thanks for the forum, MM. Good night folks. God Bless you all and God Bless America!
America’s Got Talent
Never watched the show before, but I’m finding it’s better than watching a bunch of liberal, loony-no-talent-a$$clowns breaking limbs whilst patting themselves on the back during the DNC.
Interesting sidebar: I’ve lived in Colorado over 20 years, and have never considered it a liability, until now. We’re about 10 minutes from downtown and the Pepsi Center, and heard sirens almost continuously throughout the night last night.
The only change we’re looking forward to is when these clowns get out of town. That’s change that I can believe in.
I was embarrassed for the rube of a Governor from Montana…man, what a pathetic speaker! I thought he was very clownish.
And Hillary? I think her speech smacked of “all about Hillary” and not so much about The One.
Did anyone hear that socialist blowhard quote Jefferson? He doesn’t have enough human DNA in that bastardized brain of his to know that Jefferson stood against everything his party stands for.
Bad collie! Bad! Bad! Bad!
To be honest, I watched Eureka on the Sci-Fi channel. It’s far more believable.
Eureka, did you know the area is a superfund location? Yep, contaminated groundwater, which I suspect is indicative of liberal bastions nationwide. Just sayin, you can look at the map and judge for yourself.
Well - I guess we are in for 8 years of Obama and then 8 years of Hillary - she’ll be 68 in 2016…
Carly Fiorina on Fox News tonight was saying the far right, of course, won’t vote for McCain - this election will be determined by voters “in the middle.”
Anyway - I think people might be wishing a little too hard …if they think Hillary defectors are going to vote for McCain - however - check out Lynn Forester de Rothschild
who talked to Greta about possibly supporting McCain.
Greta also has on Stanley Kurtz about the Ayers-Annenberg files. Greta is skeptical…so am I…
So anyway - Lynn Forester was introduced to Evelyn (a guy) de Rothschild at a Bilderberg Group meeting- by Henry Kissenger … this should perk up some ears out there…
so - could she become a broker for a McCain/Hillary ticket? The way everybody here is gloating how Hillary’s speech is better than the Obamas - isn’t that what you all would like to see?
I’m pretty sure heads would explode if there was a McCain/Hillary ticket.
Lots of heads.
Both sides of the aisle.
tgusa #244
Huh?
Who’s the media popular with? When have they ever been right? How many Americans trust their judgment? True, Barack is the media candidate but that’s all he is. God help em, the stupid fools.
Just making a comment, Eureka is a superfund location. I once had a girlfriend that wanted to buy property there and I almost bought it, until I did the research. its indicative of libs smart guys living on WWII toxic waste all the while being made smarter, true liberalism
I think buyers remorse in the Democrat party is real and growing. And remember, in a close election it is not necessary to peel away all of the other side’s supporters–a few percent of them going the other way or choosing to stay home can make all the difference in the world.
backwoods conservative said:
See what I mean….
I mentioned in a post a few days earlier that my mother (yes, the only liberal in the family) is one of those Hillary voters who is voting for McCain.
There will be a percentage that will vote for McCain…the older, female voters.
If there is no buyer’s remorse we have plenty of time to create it. It is only Tuesday it will be a long week, a long wait for the election. Americans are not as dumb as Madonna and others, Barack loses, why, because he is a loser purporting that America is a bunch of losers.
Patton would not be pleased.
Am I the only one who thought it ironic when Hillary said “More of a government where the privileged come first … and everyone else comes last.”? Wasn’t that Bill’s Mission Statement when he was in the White House - “everyone else comes last?”
I just saw the video (at Powerline) of MM verbally assaulted outside the Denver Mint by loud-mouthed buffoon Alex Jones about putting terrorists in “FEMA camps.” Way to go Michelle, it looked pretty hairy there when the “peace and love” brigades started chanting “Kill Michelle Malkin” but you responded with poise and bravery and showed that their “free speech” agenda is no different than Hugo Chavez’.
you morons think your talking with Michelle Malkin? It’s her husband ghost blogging for her and always has written these. She was outside in Denver when these postings were made, do you think she carries a laptop with her and types while walking? The exact time a previous blog was posted she was with pajamas media taping. In 2005 For example, on September 8th, the day she was on her way to speak at Berkeley, she posted four times, including one in-depth post about Eric Muller. She then posted a wrap-up of the talk and a review of her schedule at two am pacific time, before posting again at 9:30 the next morning.
More recently, on Friday night, Malkin posted this at 7:28 pm, updating it afterwards when it turned out her first source was probably mistaken. The same night, she gave a talk in Washington, D.C.
Nero,
MM getting under your skin? I will wager that you are the only moron who believes MM is sitting in her kitchen makin sammichs and conversing with the masses. Cmon, conservatives don’t have time to waste we are busy making up for the black hole of production that is liberals and liberalism. Next time you have a meal say grace and thank MM, without her where would you be?
It’s never over until the fat lady sings. I believe she is going to sing “Wedding Bell Blues”. Marilyn McCoo will be voting for McCain afterwards. Speaking of whom, Marilyn is way older than any of you, and much better looking.
I have had no interest in watching a mutual admiration meeting of socialists this year. I’d like to go to work in the morning, without feeling angry and disgusted, plus, there isn’t enough Pepto-Bismol around to keep me from feeling nauseaous and unable to eat. I catch the “lowlights” in Denver, off of this site and others. That’s enough for me.
I guess if your name is Clinton, you just can’t overuse the pronoun “I.” I worked so hard, I ran for president because, I, I, I, I, I.
All part of the McCan’t strategy. Woo Hillary supports. Worth two votes. Going after conservatives is only one vote. A converted Hillary supporter is worth two? Ya, a vote for McCan’t and a vote NOT for Obama. A conservative won’t for for Obama in any case, so if they vote for McCan’t, it’s only worth one. Yup. We’ve been marginalized. Brilliant.
It’s time for Hillary to start dating-
From which happy home did John Edwards
watch the speech??
That loser is the only one envious of Hillary last night-barf!
’shoulda been me, sniff’
‘I’m prettier, sniff’
Orange suit…
Very appropriate…
Except it was missing “D.O.C” stenciled on the back…
Michelle Obama pregnant? Let’s pray this isn’t so. We don’t want her to be punished with a baby.
Sooooo…..
The best education is the one you don’t receive.
The best paycheck is the one you don’t get.
The best healthcare is that which is unavailable.
The best baby is the one not born.
Yep - sounds exactly like the Democratic Party platform.
Thanks for the recap. The attention I paid to the DNC last night amounted to:
1. A few seconds of listening to correspondents on the radio analyzing Hillary’s speech. A female correspondent (a pundit and not a reporter, I hope) said something like, “Hopefully, this will get more people to vote for Obama.” I switched over to a station playing rap. I usually can’t stand rap.
2. Flipped on MSNBC a short time later. Brian Williams, Andrea Mitchell, and a couple of pundits were chillin’ among the empty seats on the convention floor and analyzing the edge-of-your-seat excitement while not really saying anything substantial. The afterglow was practically visible. Click.
3. Fox News replaying the O’Reilly Factor. Bill was interviewing Karl Rove. Meh.
4. CNN and Larry King. Yawn. Click.
I went to bed earlier than usual.
Did anyone besides me notice Bill mouthing “I love you” during the opening ovation? What an actor! Man should get an Oscar.
How about “No way, no how, NObama!” Just to smooth it out a bit.
I swear I could almost see Hillary saying that, but correcting herself at the last nanosecond!
I only got as far as the orange pansuit and had to turn the channel.
conservativesRus said:
Well, I’m too white to receive affirmative action, so unlike Michelle Obama, no ivy league education for me.
I’m not married to a senator, so no 6-figure paycheck at a hospital for doing nothing like Michelle Obama.
My healthcare plan doesn’t compare to Unlce Teddy Kennedy’s health care.
And I am sure many of our best and brightest have already been slaughtered by abortion on demand, courtesy of Democrats and liberals.
conservativesRus, sadly, you are more right than you know.
;^)
Same old Bumper Sticker pitch. Nothing of substance. McCain = Bush, Republicans = Nazis/Klan, Rich must pay, Everything Free for Those that Vote for Me.
To someone’s earlier post about oil. I agree, the comment they keep bringing up about our using 25% of the world’s supply while being 3% of the population makes no sense to me at all. (It’s probably not true, anyway) Those that produce require more energy to do so. I doubt very seriously if a couple billion third-world citizens miss not having oil. I’m sure all of the major producing countries also use more than their population ratio. Stupid argument for stupid voters. Another bumper sticker.
That perspective demonstrates their primary concern, that the US is too powerful, too greedy, and not submissive to the world body. That’s ok if they believe that, but it needs to be more clearly explained to the brain-dead (read democrat voters).
Democrat Party = Moral Vacancy.
Actually Picken’s ad says we use 25% but only produce 3% of the worlds oil. Rush has fallen for the wrong analogy too. The point means we are dependent on foreign oil at the present. However, we could produce a lot more if the greenies didn’t stop the process. The other analogy is that we are addicted or selfish because we use so much oil. The truth is we, while using that oil for creating wealth, business opportunities, defense, etc. have saved Europe, liberated millions of people, provide aid to disaster victims continuously all over the world and are the worlds best hope for security and peace. That never comes up in the discussion because the Dems, enviro-wackos, etc hate America and it’s core values. (Ayers, wright…O?)
Because my wife wanted to see it (no.. she’s not voting for a Dem).. I had to hear it in the background as I read a Clancy a book. Of the parts I had to listen to, it was nauseating.
And the media seems gleeful and giddy. Like they all had a tingling feeling running up their leg.
Correct you are Al… and don’t forget that $700 Billion we give away to countries that don’t like us. That was McCain’s comment on Leno the other night. We need to cut that in half… for starters.
I opted to drink a bottle of wine and eat tacos. I’d much rather get the commentary here in the comments section than to watch it, cuz you folks are leap years ahead of Shrillary in the interesting department.
Shrillary? Did I say that?
Uh, I didn’t drink the WHOLE bottle.
Jus’ sayin’.
What a joke. Unite a party that is primarliy composed of fractious groups each advocating their agenda over others and angling for more entitlement $ and recognition (hispanics, blacks, women, gays, elderly, handicapped, tree huggers, unions, students, poor, etc)? By its very nature the democrap party is the embodiment of the “squabbling minorities” Roosevelt warned us not to become. The rest are a bunch of adults who never grew up to take responsiblity for their actions and lives (ie they still live like they are in college). The party will either explode someday, or drag the entire country into the morasse they have created within their party.
Did you notice she wasn’t there as a “proud wife” last night? HA!!
What I saw on the faces of the people in that hall last night was “Buyer’s Remorse”
They picked the wrong horse and they know it.
Good point almeehan. The better analogy is that we are producing 27% of the worlds GDP and are using less than 25% of the oil.
Did you know Obama’s stage for Thursday is going to have Roman columns? No seriously, this was just on Morning Joe. They couldn’t believe it, so they went to an aerial shot, and yes, there were in fact Roman columns set up.
I wonder if his speech will include the words:
“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto Obama, the things of Obama’s.”
Er, that should read:
“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto Obama, the things which are Obama’s.”
You have that right.
Notice the expression of Michelle O’s face while Hilliary is speaking. Its not one of anger but one of hate. She doesn’t like Hilliary not even one bit and it shows BIG time. Someone really needs to keep showing those clips ’cause it speaks volumes.
Thats redundant as far as Obama’s concerned!
My apologies if someone else has already covered this point, but didn’t this “keep going” mantra hint at being code to her supporters to NOT give up and support B. Hussein Obama?
The picture is priceless!
“Don’t cry for me convention goers. The truth is I never left you…”
How can you unify a party when you have a base of socialists, anarchists, and communists? The very basis of those belief systems is conquer and rule.
While many were watching Her Thighness, I was watching the Phillies /Mets game. Philly took a 7-0 deficit and won…. gotta love my hometown!. Oh, I forgot… what is this thread about again?
My wife noticed that Michelle was dressed in blue during her speech, blending into the background, not really standing out.
Hillary was in orange, a contrasting color to blue, literally popping out of the background, nowhere near blending in to any color behind her. There was no way that you could miss Hillary on that stage.
The Harriet Tubman quote was very bothering to me. The quote was regarding what it took to escape from slavery and I resent the implication that the Democrats and America are slaves once again. The waving of the ’slave flag’ (via a quote regarding slavery) coupled with Obama’s nomination is telling me that the Democrats will scream that I am a racist if I don’t vote for Obama. Once again, shine over substance.
I’m about ready to let the Democrats have complete control of the Presidency, the House and the Senate, 100% their party with no Republicans to be found. Let them impliment their plans with no resistance whatsoever (except from their constituents). And four years later when the entire country is in the crapper, (if we survive as a country) you won’t be able to get a Democrat elected for 12 years.
The experience factor really showed with Michelle O. vs Bill C. in the audience.
Bill was mugging for the camera all night long. He knows the camera is on him. Michele O was throwing dagger eyes all night. Someone should have told her she was going to be on camera.
Bill mouthing “I love you” and looking proud etc was all show. He is a good actor. Michelle, not so good.
I also loved Brit Humes comment that after listening to the speakers all day you would think we lived in Belarus or something. That everyone was out of work and life was so bad, that we are all poor and hated and troubled etc.
I was thinking the same thing. Why do Democrats always denigrate our country and portray us as all unemployed losers whose lives are ruined. who can’t but food or have access to medical care, or are enslaved and need the words of Harriet Tubman to pull us through and help us escape the dogs and torches that are hunting us down to destroy us (read Rebublicans= racists), and the world hates us, and has no respect for us, and we are the cause of that hate because we are such a bad bad country and everyone is justified in hating us because we deserve it.
Yet when I go to a restaurant, I have to put my name on a waiting list, sports stadiums are sold out, new cars are being sold, people are having parties, and living life.
I do not see the despair and destitution in my life, nor in the lives of others I know around the country. People of different colors and backgrounds and education levels and experiences. But these Democrats are hammering home that theme. Racism, unemployment, no medical care, can’t buy gas to look for work, working 2 jobs, mistreatment, multiple homes vs can’t pay the mortgage, rich people exploiting poor people, causing our planet to heat up and explode, etc.
But the Democrats can save us.
That’s Standard Operating Procedure… If they are not in the White House… the US is a gulag and we are all live in destitution.
You’ll notice she said something to the effect that things were pretty good in the 90’s..(when Bill was molesting interns).
Oh sure.. things were fine… except for those darn terrorist bombings and the plans for 9/11 being put into place… Yeah… those Dems really know how to take care of business….
I also noticed that Hillary said things were good in the 9o’s with Bill and the Democrats. Facts seem to evade her. Newt and the Republicans were running Congress back then. They seem to forget that there are 3 branches of government.
Also of course, there is a lag time for policies to take effect. Maybe Bush 41’s policies were showing thier effects in the 90’s and Bill was just the beneficiary.
Then Bush 43 had to deal with Clintons policies, which, according to Democrats, left this country in a mess.
travlinman… i thank you for your valient service in watching hilly, and thank you for your brilliant and lol remarks. pb and chapoutier may be the same age, but obviously one was born much older than the other. it’s actually ok chappy for you to be liberal at your age, but as soon as you start paying taxes and leave your parents house, you will grow up fast.
Well, I will pinch my nose as I say this as a lot of us may be doing on November whatever, but as far as a speech goes, it was pretty good. But there was no real substance to it. No direction, no solutions, just hyperbole.
I can’t look at her without thinking that she is even slicker than the Slick One himself (we’ll have to wait four years to see what her real motives were), but at least she didn’t present herself as the victim as she has so many times in the past.
She also didn’t articulate any reason why we should allow Oh Bummer to lead this nation, didn’t mention his accomplishments, his qualifications while spending 141 days in high political office, nor the ways he will defeat all the dangers that the democrat congress has led us (and will lead us) into.
You ain’t seen nothing yet until you see
what she and Carvel have up their sleeves in about 3 years from now.
