DNC Night 3 open thread: The serfs await; Surprise: The ONE descends from the heavens!
Scroll for updates…liveblogging the parting of the heavens for the surprise appearance of The One…

The roll call theater is over. Billy Boy prepares to strike the impossible balance between Clintonian self-aggrandizement and elder statesman-unifier. The PUMAs lick their wounds. And the stage managers continue prepping Barackopolis.
Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
***
Bill Clinton read his lines with practiced enthusiasm. Obama, he proclaimed (while stifling a snort) is “ready to lead.”
Joe Biden has a loving family and an adoring, beautifully dignifed mother.
He is lucky.
He also has a lot of baggage.
He makes a lame attempt at a call and repsonse: “That’s not change. That’s more of the same.”
Clunker.
10:47pm Eastern. Interesting. We’ve gone 25-30 minutes without a word about Iraq.
Oh, here we go.
Huh? The threat in the Middle East is “fundamental fundamentalism?”
Still no specific mention of Iraq. He’s already moved on to Georgia and Pakistan.
“American cannot afford four more years of this failure.”
(Flashback: Biden – wrong on the surge.)
10:50pm Eastern. Comedy gold! Biden crediting Obama with being right about sending more troops to Afghanistan — a year after blasting Obama for copying him on Afghanistan and being AWOL on the issue.
Biden shouting…
“Again: McCain was wrong and Barack was right.”
(Translation: I was right!)
Biden mentions his SCRANTON ties for the 2,676th time.
It’s over. His lovely wife comes on stage.
She has a special surprise guest.
It’s THE ONE.
He has descended from the heavens!
He speaks!
“I think the convention has gone very well so far. What do you think? Michelle kicked it off pretty well. Hillary Clinton rocked the house last night. President Clinton reminded us what it’s like when you actually put people first.”
This is weird. He’s acting like an emcee. Not like, you know, the next president of the U.S.
Obama: “Change doesn’t start from the top up, er, the top down. It starts from the bottom up.”
He’s nervous. Where’s the teleprompter?
And ending with the obligatory afterthought: “God bless America.”

One smart maverick move by Clinton was hitting on the economy. Even though he was stuck on National Security night. The most successful part of the Clinton legacy is the economy of the 1990s. Gore was too jaded and arrogant to run on it, but hopefully Clinton has dropped a reminder for this year’s platform.
I can’t wait to read bloggers tear apart Bill Clinton’s speech tomorrow.
Mookie we all think it was an a$$hat move, so what are you trying to say that we haven’t already?
Dukakis reminds me of a stand-up comic
Noticed it last night too. Seriously, not in the Pinochio sense. Very bulby looking. Hope he’s had it looked at.
Billy boy’s “economic” boom with the Internet bubble was a total farce.
It was a fake economy. Internet companies were being funded by drunken VC’s high on making a quick buck. Only a few were along for the ride.
A lot of people lost their butts in that market, but those who relied on profitable, solid companies did well. Those were far and few between.
If you look at the Dow charts during 2000, you’ll see it started tanking during HIS administration. Along with the old fart Greenspan sitting on his hands and refusing to lower the interest rates. That alone added major fuel to the fire. It was way too late by the time he started lowering the fed rate.
Go look at those charts.
And then came 9/11. Yeah, that hit us hard, but just look at the recovery we made afterwards.
Both my daughter and myself thought this was a strange endorsement when we heard it on the radio a couple of days ago. It’s not something I’d be bragging about.
Wow, Dukakis can’t name ONE thing Obama has done!!! Amazing!
The Montana gov who just said the U.S. Military was twice as big as the next size country is out of his mind.
China has over 500,000 more.
I guess it’s that new math.
Can anyone?
Now it’s because of Obama that the surge is working???????
WTF?
BlameAmericaLast …
Not to mention failing to pay any attention to the Enron situation …
DesertLover…
More importantly, failing to pay attention to Bin Laden.
I just saw that too!
He went to Church for TWENTY YEARS. lmao
Tennessee Dave …
Beat me to that one …
He was indoctrinated by a racist for 20 years.
Dukakis? I wonder if he consulted on the Obama Parthenon?
And here I was thinking he quit politics & opened a Gyro shop in Massachusetts..
None of them tried to blow up the Pentagon? Bought their own homes instead of getting the “Tony” deal? Yeah, they don’t meet the Obama endorsement test.
I had to Google to get the numbers.
Obama loves Greek.
Hey folks … I was once involved in putting together a neighborhood watch program …
does that qualify me as a “Community Organizer” …
The Guvna from Montana made this America loathing false statement that the liberals love to spout. Drill Here. Drill Now.
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2008/08/021332.php
How about organizing bake sales? Isn’t that a “community organizer”?
I’m secretary for my HOA. Maybe I can run for office.
no dl, only if you organized for the criminals…
One thing about the Obamathenon is that right in front under the huge white columns is where the wounded soldiers will be sitting…no wait, sorry, it’s where the Ritz-Carlton Spa staff will be sitting.
Dukakis should stick to driving tanks.
please navywife take Boxers job.
aj … drats! …
Now now people.. You’re being unfair here. Barack Obama was a community organizer along side a guy who organized blowing up a police station & the pentagon in one William Ayers (one of Obama’s earliest senseis.)
He has to at least have enough planning skills to blow stuff up right?
Hmmmmmmm…. huh… wow..
Dan Lee …
no doubt … he’s been blowing smoke up everyone’s butts for 2 years now …
i think this goes back to the sauce reference MJ made earlier.
He’s channeling Carl Malden.
I should have known we couldn’t get through the night without the race-baiters getting on tv …
ha! al bait yer hook sharpie…
No offense, but I enjoy being a Florida resident. Of course, that Congressional retirement plan sounds really good.
Or W. C. Fields
He may want to imagine himself as a Greek mythological god, but all I see is the porch of a southern mansion, and Barry is the butler.
That makes you a jackass.
Jangar, you really shouldn’t have gone there.
Barry’s deity aspirations are just a “myth in his own mind” …
Barry’s deity aspirations are just a “myth in his own mind” …
Please note that I do not equate the idiotic comments of jangar with all of the conservative non-racist friends I have met here.
I heart you guys!
I don’t know if “not that clever” or “moron” are strong enough words to use in this case, but let me go ahead and use them anyway …
You’re not that clever, moron. Nobody here buys what you’re selling.

I disagree; with Obama’s campaign, there is no more need for late night comedy sketches. I’m still giggling about his Greek Temple stage…
mistressjustice said:
No he can’t. I used to think Obama was going to be really, really tough to beat. No longer. The only way Obama wins is if McCain does something really dumb (which is, admittedly, possible).
mistressjustice said:
Sorry, it doesn’t matter how close the election is, young folks just don’t vote. Obama’s appeal to young folks is waning, as he continues to reveal himself as just another politician.
Young people don’t vote, old folks do. Which gives McCain an advantage.
I wish I could have seen Bill’s speech, but my daughter just had to watch Wow Wow Wubbzy.
Talk about mythconceptions…
Thanks, chap, that’s rather sporting of you.
Not to mention honest.
I second that!
is bidet on stage yet I have the Dodgers on?
mistressjustice, You realize, of course, that oral s@x performed by white house interns can drain a man of Clinton’s “stature”
aj … not yet
“Yes we can!”
A mantra adapted from the theme of the Little Engine That Could.
Figures.
I don’t know if I can handle listening to biden tonight.. I think I may need another beer..
If y’all thought Clinton was bad, you should have listened to Dukakis on Hannity & Combs…I guess they must keep him in a locked room with restraints most of the time, but he was still smarting over losing to Bush Sr. No that’s perspective. He said if he’d won, we’d never have to contend with Bush Jr.
If this were true, you would be talking about how to beat Hillary. Say what you want, but Obama brought record numbers of youth voters out for the primaries. What makes you think they won’t come out for the general?
You should thank your daughter.
atheling … mythconceptions
good one …
nope probably the meds (the blood thinners) he has to take after the heart attack. and, maybe cause he can’t eat the McD’s anymore???
course, i never thought he was all that before, now he is even less than that..
ADD.
say what you want chappy? yikes! dont go there look what janger wrote…. we’d really be in for it.
I’ve had enough of the politics for the night. Gonna watch M*A*S*H* on TvLand.
I remember the youth vote was supposed to help Kerry in ‘04, but it never panned out. Diddy had his campaign, “Vote or Die” and Springsteen(I think it was him)had a concert and then led all the potential voters over to register.
Its always good for the idiots to expose themselves, right? That applies to both sides. Even me sometimes.
C’mon, Dave. Don’t you want to see Biden get all emotional???
I miss Manny.
I still want to know where Biden got that grey colored Chia pet mix for the top of his head..
I agree that many times candidates have counted on the youth vote without any real reason to do so. But Obama undeniably brought out a ton of new voters in the primaries. Heck, I was one.
Angels are on I am outa here also….
have a terrrific evening all.
Wow, that’s rich. Dean talking about divisiveness. Didn’t he just “slip” up and call the Republican party the “white” party?
Jerk!
If you are a Sox fan, Mookie, I demand you immediately relinquish the rights to the screen name of one of the most beloved Mets ever.
You are not worthy of such a hallowed name.
he just got a hit to extend the game, opps, now its over 5-4 dogmeats lose.
lata..
Chapoutier:
That only means that you have been swept up by the cult of personality which engines Obama’s campaign.
Not a good way to start out as a voter in a Republic.
I”m ready to lead!!!
On the surface, I think that’s great. However, I’ve seen some of his young supporters and they cannot tell you anything Obama has done or wants to do. There are always exceptions to that, but the vast majority can only site “change” as a reason to vote. That’s very embarassing to me as an American. This morning, two girls were asked to identify some pictures of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dick Cheney, etc. They actually said that Dick Cheney (couldn’t name him) shot the President!!!!!
Isn’t it possible at all that a nice mix policy positions and inspiration can have a place without resorting to some lame “cult of personality” retort? I can tell you many points on which I disagree with Obama, if that would help assuage your concerns about me drinking kool-aid or whatever.

Sorry chap, letter of the law.
Navy, I saw that and there was another gal on a bike that was just as clueless…. unreal.
But when that vote is cast it is either/or. It is not measured by how educated the voter is. So I again would say that McCain has real reason to fear the youth/new vote.
What “policy positions” do you consider to be so “nice” when blended with “inspiration”?
aj, my girls, who are 12 & 14 could name most, if not all of the people on that paper Doocy had. Sad. Very sad.
I am drafting a summons and complaint as we speak.
Is Obama a Greek mythological god? We already know he is “the biggest fairytale”.
And no, young people are not going to vote, not even for a guy with his own Greek Temple.
I can’t wait to see Biden’s speech. I need a good laugh.
Many of us here have led others into battle for this country … I’ll take that kind of leadership over whatever it takes to be a “community organizer” any day of the week …
navywife, re: They actually said that Dick Cheney (couldn’t name him) shot the President!!!!!
Yes! President Kerry! & he got a purple heart for it! (dem history 101)
Man….. I’m glad i’m not a public figure…. I dunno how I’d deal with all the mental patients out loose harassing me like they did you the other day, Michelle.
True, chap, but that doesn’t make me feel any better about people who are ignorant of the issues, especially young people. I just think it’s pathetic, that’s all. Maybe someday, they’ll grow up and educate themselves.
OK folks, just heard Bidet will be on in about 20 minutes…
Get your plagiarism check gear ready.
My finger’s ready on Google search button.
So, during the NBC news at 6:30, just after the “Michelle’s a nice lady – really” interview and before coverage of the roll call suspension (what timing for that to take place…) there was a hurricane Gustav update. As of now, it is on the southeastern side of Cuba and weakening. But the crack NBC weather team predicted that next Monday, Gustav will score a DIRECT hit on New Orleans, and depicted it on their forecast map as such. The storyline being pushed by the tanning booth eyes guy was how would the evil, terrible Republikillers answer for all of the Katrina part II destruction in NoLa, while trying to sell McCain at their convention. Who dares accuse them of bias?
1. Killing newborns via exposure?
2. Disarming our military in the face of nuclear Iran and now a Russian bear awake from hibernation?
3. Give up American sovereignty to the UN where they seek to destroy our First and Second Amendments?
4. Creating a half trillion dollar paramilitary citizenry with what money?
5. Higher taxes?
6. Gas prices at over $5.00/gal because we cannot drill our own?
6. Socialist health care with a quality that parallels the crappy government health care our military receives?
navywife, being a transplanted Floridian myself, I took heart in seeing (today) that McCain is beating Obama by 7 points in the state.
The thought of McCain leading anything a year ago would have made me barf. Now I just hope he does not lose his momentum by selecting either a lame person or a VP that will make my head explode. Drudge says Friday is the day we find out who is VP.
I feel (hope) this race is McCain’s to win over the Obamas. I think there is more coming out about Barry’s past, in spite of the Greek temple backdrop and the deity theme. Flying monkeys would be more appropriate for tomorrow night.
brooklyn,
That might actually end up in a public school history book someday, so be careful.
Can someone call GWB and ask him to turn off the hurricane machine, please?!
I’m a rabid Sox fan. I picked the name from a charity that a friend of mine runs for MS research and it didn’t occur to me until about a week later about Mookie Wilson. Being a Sox fan, I was instantly horrified.
I don’t like Biden at all, but I do take a little comfort in knowing that at least one of the two Democratic candidates knows that there are NOT 57 states in our union.
Wiil the Dems ever get back to sanity?
Will America wake up and smell reality?
Will we ever see a mainstream Dem Presidential Candidate?
I am hoping that this election will finally reveal the undermining of America by the Democrats and send Americans to the Right for a long long time.
Unfortunately we have too many Americans who just don’t like America.
Obama errs on Ayers
Lindsay,
I didn’t see that poll, but it’s good news. I didn’t vote for McCain in the primary, but I cannot sit by and let Obama get elected. I wish he’d pick Michael Steele, but I have a feeling it will be Romney.
Yes always. Kudos to those who shout down.
ANYWAY, it cracks me up to see John Kerry with such a fire under his a$$ the past few years. He was on fire tonight. Remember when he took on Bush’s Ambassader to (some country), and turned it into a grilling of the guy’s support for SBVT. Where was the fire in 2004? Back then he acted all above-it-all, Joe-cool. I know he says he ran out of money to fight the smears, but still, the guy had minimal fight. Too little too late Mr. Kerry, but we’ll appreciate your spirit in the coming years.
The worst VP pick McCain could do right now is pick Huckleberry.
I see that Gov. Jindal already declared a state of emergency.
He’s going to show Blanco how it’s done.
