Document drop: Turning the tables again on Obama’s speech-squelching thugs

Just obtained the latest counterpunch from American Issues Project, the independent group running the ad about Bill Ayers that the Obama campaign doesn’t want you to see. (Embedded again at the end of this post. Keep passing it around.)
As I’ve pointed out repeatedly over the past few days, Obama’s attempt to bully TV stations airing the ad and stop scrutiny of his radical ties is part and parcel of a larger campaign to chill the free speech of conservative political activists and donors.
AIP sends the same message to the DOJ’s Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Keeney and turns the tables on the Chicago thugs:
Re: Response to August 25, 2008 Letter to DOJ from Obama Presidential Campaign (“Second Letter”)
Dear Mr. Keeney:
Yet again, the Obama for America campaign has sent a letter to you and your office, demanding now that the Department of Justice prosecute one of the donors to American Issues Project, Inc., (“AIP), a non-profit organization which is presently sponsoring advertisements to which the Obama campaign objects.
As stated in my letter sent in response to the Obama campaign’s first letter, AIP has not violated the law, is not violating the law and is taking every possible precaution to assure that it does not violate the law in the future.
The Obama campaign dislikes the content of AIP’s advertising – but is unable to contradict the facts contained in the ad. That is precisely why the ad is presently being broadcast by numerous television stations. It is accurate, documented, and truthful.
The Obama Campaign has specifically called on the Department of Justice to prosecute a donor to AIP, whose contribution was disclosed publicly in accordance with federal law. See 11 C.F.R. §109.10.
Information contained in AIP’s FEC Form 5, filed on August 19, 2006 was attached to the Obama Campaign’s Second Letter to DOJ and information contained in the filing forms the basis for the Obama Campaign’s latest demands of you and the Department.
The Obama Campaign’s request gives rise to a significant legal and constitutional question: that is, whether the Department of Justice would seriously undertake the prosecution of a citizen under pressure from a prominent government official / political candidate, relying on information contained in truthful and accurate government filing, disclosed in accordance with federal law. There are serious Fifth Amendment self-incrimination issues involved in a situation whereby a criminal prosecution could be ordered at will by political pressure on your Department based solely on a timely and accurate federal government disclosure.
AIP has sought and received the voluntary after-tax contributions of donor(s) to support its policy objectives, which happen to differ from those of the Obama Campaign. Rather than addressing the facts contained in the AIP advertisement, it has instead set about to “deal” with AIP through your Department.
This is, however, only the latest in a series of brazen public statements and efforts by liberal Democratic operatives and agents of the Obama Campaign to silence their critics and organizations with whom they disagree, by initiating what they acknowledge is a concerted national effort announced in recent weeks to intimidate, harass and otherwise bully conservative donors.
An organization calling itself “Accountable America” announced two weeks ago its intent to obtain publicly filed disclosures to attempt to coerce donors to conservative causes to stop making contributions and essentially threatening potential donors into not making contributions to conservative groups. Like the Obama Campaign, this group of operatives is using information obtained from legally mandated public disclosures to identify and target for their attack donors to conservative causes.
Of course, should the Department decide to yield to the pressure from the Obama Campaign and undertake its requested ‘investigations’ of donors to politically related conservative causes, the Department would necessarily be required to do so in an even-handed, non partisan and non-ideological approach. In that regard, the Department would be required to review all donors to all causes and political / policy organizations, whose contributions exceed $5,000 per calendar year to any such causes, the vast majority of which are donors to liberal causes, not conservative ones.
Based on calculations from the Center for Responsive Politics (www.crp.org ) the following are leftwing donors whose substantial contributions to political causes in the last three election cycles have consistently landed each of them on the top donors list and surely each of these donors warrant the Department’s review, scrutiny and prosecution, if the Obama Campaign standard is to be applied evenly:
George Soros:
2004: $23,450,000
2006: $ 3,542,500
2008 (to date) $ 4,650,000
Steven Bing:
2004: $13,852,031
2008 (to date) $ 4,850,000
Peter Lewis:
2004: $22,997,220
2006: $ 1, 624,375
2008 (to date) $ 850,000
Herb and Marion Sandler:
2004: $13, 008, 459
Linda Pritzker:
2004: $3,300,000
2006: $2,101,000
John Hunting:
2006: $1,647,000
2008 (to date) $1,243,000
Alida Messinger
2004: $ 3,580,200
2006: $ 1,042,000
2008 (to date) $ 883,000
Pat Stryker:
2006: $ 1,331,293
2008 (to date): $ 300,000
Jon Stryker:
2006: $ 1,271,313
2008: $ 604,054
The list is quite lengthy and this is but a partial list of those the Department would be obligated to pursue if it bows to the demands of the Obama Campaign to undertake investigations of wealthy donors making large contributions to political causes. The Obama Campaign should be aware that most of the donors on the list are individuals who consistently support left-wing, liberal and Democratic causes. And most of the donors listed above have made public statements regarding their intent to use their wealth to impact the outcome of federal elections should the Department need further evidence of their activities.
The letters from the Obama Campaign to you and your Department are a gross misuse of the power and prestige of that organization. However, because of the environment in which we function, it is important that AIP respond to the ongoing baseless allegations in the letter war now being waged against it by the Obama Campaign.
AIP has violated no provision of law. The donor(s) to AIP have violated no provision of law. However, if the Department of Justice decides to initiate investigations of donors to AIP and other conservative political and policy organizations, as well as the activities of citizens groups such as AIP, we will be prepared to counter such efforts with our list of targets and entities with which we disagree politically and philosophically for the Department to also investigate and prosecute.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Cleta Mitchell

MM,
Thanks for the info.
HAHA take that left wing facists!!!
Oblahblah’s team better have their jock straps on very tightly. Me thinks they’re going to get “rocked” if they continue to push their legal storm-trooper tactics.
ouch! Consider yourself told!
Red meat.
That was beautiful.
Time for Fox to drop the bomb, I mean to release the taped interview by James Rosen.
IANAL, but excellent response, IMHO! Go AIP!
geez; george soros and peter lewis have given in excess of 55 million dollars over the last four years. if you gave 25 or 30 million bucks, wouldn’t you expect SOMETHING. lobbying reform my A$$.
Thanks MM, you rock! Now that is what you call a warning shot.
Where’s chapoutier?
Where’s DoJ?
Wheres waldo? (sorry, it was just there)
Awesome, i’m glad to see Jon & Pat Stryker’s names up there. Stryker Corp. has bilked Medicare & Medicaid out of billions through fraudulent charges.
This is just the greatest news. Thanks Michelle, Cleta is a ‘go getter’.
L
Obie and camp pushed when they should have pulled.
Go AIP!
beautiful response
That is what you call a “beat down.” SUPERB!
NotIn My name!Go AIP!
Barak O’Bidet NO8!
Lots of multi-syllable words in AIP’s letter, so no doubt he is trying to find his dictionary.
AIP is right…. Obama is wrong. Very wrong.
Hopefully, the Obama campaign’s Chicago Mob-like actions will be dragged out into the light for all to see.
Thuggery. Plain and simple.
I’m looking forward to the next AIP sponsored ad. Keep up the great work AIP!
Shorter Cleta Mitchell, Esq.:
Hey Obama…Get Bent.
XOXO,
Cleta
Excellent response to Obama’s totalitarian tactics. I like how they pointed out that the facts of the ad were never questioned.
AIP needs to keep up the pressure, and others need to keep looking at Barry O and his friends closer…he’s a product of the Chi-town machine, and like the old saying “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” applies here. Barry is hiding something BIG from his past, and it’s a matter of time before it shows up (although Halloween would be a nice time for it to surprise him)>
They cannot get the DOJ to do anything about AIP so here is something interesting at Acountable America.
I hate the idea of sending them traffic but, as you can see by the number of comments, there is no worries there.
A snip:
The truth is just too much!
Maybe it’s better for McCain’s camp to come out with an ad praising this. They would earn my support. Getting me to not vote for Obama is a mute point, as I would not be voting for him anyway. McCain needs to earn my vote. EARN IT. Praise the raids.
Perfect.
You know, my father (R.I.P.) worked for the Sandlers when they owned World Savings. They were very good to him, and later to my family when he passed away many years ago.
He would roll over in his grave if he knew the company they now keep.
If they get a majority in the house and senate large enough to prevent filibusters, it won’t matter who is in the White House. This is only the beginning. We will start losing the blogs, talk radio, and even our ability to call and complain. We’ve been doing that about drilling, and Pelosi has turned a deaf ear! Our rights will deteriorate rapidly from there!
Vicki, My Grandfather has turned over so many times in his grave he’s churned butter.
pwned !!!
Even *I* understood that letter..
but isn’t Chappy a lawyer?
the letter is pretty much straight forward.. Chaps is still trying to find some angle in there.. a misplaced ‘is’ or something.
looks like someone wants a memory hole and re-written history.
Thanks for the link, John. This does my heart good.
I’m going to be donating to AIP before the end of this week. Who’s with me?
Shot across the bow!! Awesome!! I know what attorney I will hire if I ever need one.
Looks like Obama for America has hired an unarmed first year law student to represent them in a battle of wits.
Hey Michelle, want to know why people faint at an Obama rally?
We’ll leave this up to the ‘friends of Obama’ (or are they disciples?).
The really cool thing about this is, (and thanks for the great work MM!)that these dopes think they can fire randomly at anyone who seems to threaten the annointed ones’ rep, without understanding that there are highly competent, well educated, people out there who aren’t afraid to punch you in the mouth for it. THIS is why the First Amendment is so damn powerful… and why the Obummer crowd looks so stupid.
Just keep digging in Chicago Michelle. That city holds way too many politicians and government people in its filthy claws and not just state politicians. If the big guys up there were to go to jail, Springfield might become the ACTUAL capitol of Illinois. What a concept.
Sauerberg over Durbin, make it a war cry for conservatives. Help us dump Durbin!
Are there any similarities between this and the Rise of Nazism in Germany?
So compare this $55 million from just these two guys, to the $2.9 million AIP received….quite a contrast. And, in comparison, to see how scared the surrendercrats are of this paltry little sum.
Obozo and the surrendercrats just got bitch-slapped so hard I think his brother in Nairobi felt it.
There can’t be two better examples of extremes of behavior than George Bush and Hopenchange.
At one end of the spectrum, there’s Bush: he’s turned the other cheek so many times — too many times — when donkeys dragged his name through the mud that his failure to stand up and defend himself on the merits cost him in the end.
At the other end of the spectrum is Hopenchange, so thin-skinned that he can’t take even a light punch without over-reacting into totalitarian thuggery.
Bush’s flaccidity was exasperating, but Hopenchange’s ready resort to tactics right out of the dictator’s playbook is alarming. Now that he’s let the mask slip and revealed the dictator-in-waiting behind it, all one can say is that if Hopenchange occupies the White House in January we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves.
“A republic — if you can keep it.”
– Benjamin Franklin’s veiled warning to the American people concerning the results of the original Constitutional convention
Much as I don’t like the things Obama stands for, they aren’t stupid. They must know this isn’t going to work. So maybe they have an agenda we don’t understand; their legal moves are a diversion from the real problem, whatever it is. Just wondering.
Thanks for the link. Interesting:
Obamatons really have a hard time figuring out how things work.
Don’t worry, Travis, the Obamessiah will ensure that we all pick up your hospital tab.
Finally, some spine cartilage showing from conservatives!
Sounds like B HUSSIEN wants to stop freedom of speech and throw away our rights. And they say Bush took our rights. If this A_hole is allowed to be president not only will he be pictured on the food stamp but he will have us all in chains like slaves. Guess his dream is not for a country based on the old south but a country with EVERYONE as his slave. Guess that is why they calling him the one. Our first dictator
Glad i have my guns and religion.
Oblahblah’s team better have their jock straps on very tightly. Me thinks they’re going to get “rocked” if they continue to push their legal storm-trooper tactics.
THis is to draw attention to the donors and from there to McCain-Feingold, and draw attention away from Obama’s feet of clay.
i tried posting on http://www.accountableamerica.org... you should check it out. they got a Free History Project copyright infringement attack on ayers ad…. a public television financed documentary with old footage suing the ayers ad folks. its quite frightening. i posted commment but it’s not on comments section… hmmmm???
I dismissed the actions of Accountable America as the acts of fools.
Not so with the Obama Campaign. Their blatant attempts to silence the AIP seem to be born of desperation. I agree with fmfnavydoc (above). They’re frantically trying to hide something BIG in Obama’s past.
Maybe. Pelosi Galore’s butt is in a sling as we speak. As is Harry “Bending” Reid’s. The drilling vote has been stalled while she figures out what to do to save her neck. Letting fuel prices stay where they are will be the end of her “leadership” era, and she knows it.
Either she caves to the EnvirMoonBats or she does the right thing and gets out of the way of the will of this vaunted “will of the American People”. Soccer mom’s are not going to accept high prices forever. And now that they are beginning to see that environmental laws are wagging the dog, they will not support her.
Pelosi Galore’s move to vacate the House and pull the plugs on microphones and cut the power so no one could speak, is a red flag of FEAR on her part.
Stay tuuned. The MoonBats havent won anything in their time of majority. It isnt about to change.
Kindly-
Bear1909 out
Nice one atheling!
Maybe, just maybe, our so-called ‘representatives’ in the Republican party could talk Attorney Mitchell into a loan of the pair of huge brass ones it took to write this letter? I’d pitch in some cash to fund the truck it will take to move these to a usable spot for the Repubs.
Thank you God for putting these kinds of people on the earth to set an example for the weak, sissyfied, candy-a$$ group in Washington. Please send more like Attorney Mitchell.
Wait.. Did I just ask for more attorneys? I truly am losing my mind!
All well and good. Any word on a responce from the DOJ yet?
Working. And lunch.
There seems to be no new information in this post or the letter by AIP’s letter, so I am not sure what exactly I am supposed to comment on. I stand by what I said (and didn’t say JSHII) in the other thread.
It is saying that 1) the ad is factually accurate (which is irrelevant with respect to campaign finance laws) 2) we didn’t break any laws (doubtful they would admit to as much) and 3) well…if you are going to investigate us, look at all those baddies on the other side doing the same thing (i.e moral equivocation).
If the Obama campaign has evidence that the group is in violation of campaign laws, they have every right to bring it to the DOJ’s attention. His motives for doing so may be less than pure. If there is any evidence that other groups are doing the same on behalf of the left, they deserve to be investigated as well. I don’t know enough about all the activities of ANY of these groups to make any sort of determination as to the merits of any case that may be presented against them.
And if they are I guarantee you will not here a single word from me in protest or complaining that conservatives are just trying to quash dissenting voices.
That about summarizes it.
Between
“surely each of these donors warrant the Department’s review, scrutiny and prosecution”
AND
“Is this from the Onion?”
Today already has been fantastic for Republican quotes. And later tonight Bubba shoots for the trifecta.
Swmbo is right, we need to support Steve Sauerberg. http://www.sauerberg2008.com
I received on of the flyers he was passing out at the Illinois state fair. I turned it over and this is what I saw (in order)
End Illegal Immigration/No amnesty.
Improve Healthcare (he’s an MD)
Cut taxes and WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT SPENDING
100% Guaranteed Social Security
Iraq/Win the War on Terror.
bear you are so right .the change needs to be in pelosi house not the white house
Well in fairness to Soros, as a young lad he did learn intimidation at the hands of the Nazis. He must have been an impressionable youth.
Can you imagine what it’d be like if the Stupid Party had the testicular fortitude and savvy of these AIP blokes?
BO’s skin keeps getting thinner. Nobody made him become friends with America haters. It’s all about consequences of actions. BO thinks he’s above all that.
Copyright law is a jumble, but I didn’t know you could copyright terrorist activites.
Little Ma,
One of my last assignments was at the Base in Great Lakes (just north of Chicago, in Lake County). The extent of corruption, not just at the state, but county and city level was absolutely amazing. The Mayor of North Chicago (where the base is at) wanted to have her picture on the city parking permits – others on the city council stopped her from doing it – they looked at it as a form of campaign advertising. Her hubby was also accused of cutting some sweet deals with the city for “urban redevelopment projects”. She was voted out of office and replaced by another pol with a shady past…
The area, was the ideal picture of what Hollywood would depict as a ghetto – drug dealers and hookers on street corners, gunshots and sirens throughout the night. What was even more amazing was the base was a buffer between the ‘hood and one of the wealthier neighborhoods in Lake County (Lake Forest). The schools were in danger in 2006 of being taken over by the state board of education because they could not raise their test scores to meet the standards set by the No Child Left Behind act, but the district was all about getting their money from the Feds for all of the military kids that went to school there.
The problem in Chicago is that most of the pols behave like Al Capone wannabees…
Good smackdown by the AIP. Odumbo’s people must not be too bright. By continuing their threats, they are certainly keeping this issue in the news cycle.
As the saying goes in the PR world…”bad press is good press”.
Good press for AIP.
More ‘friends’?
It tells The Truth. Period. I found while teaching that those students who screamed the loudest were caught in real lies.
I am with some of the others commenting here, that surely Obamitler has something up his sleeve. He does act like someone who is hiding something big, of which, we will probably never know until he has either gone the way of Gore or has completed his term in office.
We can hope that San Fran Nan Queen of Botox and Harry Desert Lizard Reid will continue their blockage of the comprehensive energy plan. What should be happening is a two pronged approach by running this Ayers ad and an ad attacking both dem leaders.
We can only hope that a filibuster majority in the house and senate does not occur for the dems, because we know how McCain loves to reach across and join them.
Anyone care to explain why they would run crying to the DoJ rather than filing a complaint with the FEC is this were a campaign violation?
Curious.
I want to know why they’re going after individual TV stations. If they have reason to suspect something illegal, then go to the courts and have an injunction placed to stop the airing of the ad. Then have it decided by the courts or the FEC if a law was broken or not.
It is….too bad Mitchell didn’t mention his big ears. The left would have popped veins.
FEC has only civil enforcement power. The Obama campaign is trying to get a criminal review, hence the DOJ. I would think they would also try to get the FEC to act as well.
That letter is a thing of beauty. If the Obamahdi Army is willing to try use the Justice Department in this way now, imagine what they would do once The One is in office.
John: I can’t support that list. Social security is not a proper function of federal government. Health care is not a proper function of federal government. I would argue that both of those items are “wasteful governmental spending” and in conflict with his goal to eliminate “wasteful government spending”.
Chap said:
Lol. John Keeney’s going to take Obama’s letter’s and put them in ‘file 13.’
Do a little research on JK.
“Pelosi Galore’s butt is in a sling”
…*scrubbing brain of horrid image*…
This is the “shoot the messenger” tactics of the Chicago political machine. It is NOT about whether the message is accurate, it is about stopping the message. Intimidation, bulling and revenge tactics are well known at all levels of gov there. BO should remember that Hillary can play the same game, afterall, she is from Highland Park, IL. Dick Morris knows her tactics well. She’s not done with BO yet, so grab the popcorn and wait for the undermining to begin.
They are now arresting reporters in denver for reporting on the DNC. Wow they aren’t even in yet and they are doing this.
Mad Chef
Would the Strykers you are referring to be the owners of the company we were just about to purchase a $15,000 stryker ambulance guerney from?
Fantastic letter!!
Great use of the facts at hand – logic, reasoning, even better – reminding the Justice Dept. personnel to APPLY THE LAW evenly –
More power to Ms. Mitchell and all at AIP !!

The swill is rising higher than Pelosi Galore’s hem now because of the sanctuary problems of murder and rape committed by illegals exploiting the ‘rehab’ model being used to tame them.
Enough will be enough none too soon enough. Pelosi Galore is cracking up. She has been on local news shows talking up her book….. she stares straight ahead while shoveling her talking points off the DNC jalopy as her idolizing interviewers look at her not look at them.
It’s high comedy. She cant even blink there is so much infectious cattle byproduct in her skull now. But oh! Those damn factory farms are evil.

Responsible? RESPONSIBLE????
A diabetic not eating for hours and not carrying his own water bottle is typical of the self-reliance of the Obama supporters who want the government to take care of them completely – cradle to convention to grave.
Talk about tearing somebody a new assh*le!!! Bravo, Cleta Mitchell, Esq.
Let’s cut to the chase, shall we, Obummer? You’ve made some very politically expedient (and dangerous) associations to get you ahead in politics and they’re biting you in the butt.
Either acknowledge what kind of relationship you had with Ayers or this will just continue to bite you. Then again, you’re already making a mountain out of a mole hill by linking this ad to McCain, aren’t you?
I’m disappointed with both sides on this issue, more so with Obama of course, but also with the right wing blogosphere for lionizing the ad. This has been the primary tactic against Obama from day one. Go after his wife, his reverend, now his neighbors and fellow community activists. They might all be horrible people but as a tactic, the efficacy is questionable. Ayers’ name recognition is quite low, his crimes are decades old, and without a smoking gun linking Obama to the Weather Underground itself, this is just another Swift Boating.
The problem with swift boating is not that the political groups funding the ads are lying; there are no lies in the Ayers ad, just the misleading implication that Ayers somehow significantly influences Obama’s work in office, which he doesn’t. This is how the republicans want to win. Discrediting his ideas is too much work. This is partly why Washington never changes. People complain about how politicians are morally bankrupt, how Washington wastes our tax dollars and only try to protect their own interests. Yet every major campaign comes down to character assassination of the other team’s guy, while the party and its platform get a pass.
It’s Obama’s own fault for giving them the chance. He shouldn’t have associated with a scumbag like Ayers in the first place, and if he had any principle, he would have come clean about the relationship earlier. He could try to apologize, say it was a mistake to work with Ayers even if he was just trying to help Chicago’s schools, and try to bring the debate back to policy and leadership. Instead, he writes to the Department of Justice and tries to get them to prosecute, which is obscene and the absolute worst PR mistake he could make. Nothing could create more interest in the ad and the documents related to his work with Ayers.
Ironically, the climate of extensive regulations on political ads is John McCain’s baby. While I don’t consider complaining to TV stations by candidates and supporters to be “bullying”, politicians should not be using legal threats to chill free speech unless there is defamation. I don’t like the ad, but Obama is responding in the worst way. Here’s reason #345,832 not to vote for the guy.
Moral equivalence (not equivocation, you illiterate twit)? Maybe so. It could also be called fairness, or even equal treatment under the law, of which I thought all you libs/leftists were firmly in favor. You seem to disapprove of that when the shoe is on the wrong foot. This organization appears quite confident that they are in compliance with the letter and spirit of McCain/Feingold, as any conservative organization must be. Generally when you leftists use “moral equivalence”, it’s because you’ve been caught breaking the law, and try to equate that to other similar (but legal) activity of your opponents, which is, of course, why it falls flat. At any rate, there isn’t any likelihood at all that DOJ could move fast enough to affect this election cycle, even if they did bother to look into this, which (I believe) they won’t – and the Obama camp obviously knows this. If anybody does investigate, it’ll be the FEC. There isn’t any chance they’d get to this anytime soon either, and even then if they find anything improper, DOJ may or may not subsequently become involved. The Obama action is simply and obviously an attempt to intimidate conservatives into not contributing to conservative causes, and as such, should be prosecutable in its own right (although I have no idea whether it would specifically violate any current federal law, it most assuredly violates the spirit of the American electoral system). As far as I’m concerned, it makes me just hate and despise the radical left even more than I did before, and makes me begin to consider the unthinkable – voting for McCain.
So the count it in – so far Obama has clear demonstrated disdain for:
a) The First Amendment.
b) The Second Amendment.
c) … ?
Well his friend ayers does want soldiers quartered…not in your home, but drawn and quartered.
