The GOP platform: Putting face-saving above principle
Let’s recap, for a moment, what the GOP has been up to while the DNC circus has been carrying on in Denver.
You’ve got the RNC running ads targeting open-borders Hispanic voters by touting John McCain as a stronger shamnesty supporter than Barack Obama.
You’ve got McCain foolishly promoting an endorsement from open-borders reggaeton star Daddy Yankee.
You’ve got GOP platform conferees refusing to combat pro-illegal immigration euphemisms.
And now, you’ve got those platform writers throwing in the towel on drilling in ANWR in order to save face for John McCain, who’s on the same side as Barack Obama and the Democrat Party on this issue:
Republicans are putting John McCain’s presidential prospects above their wish to drill for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Members of the GOP platform committee voted Wednesday to stick with an energy plank that doesn’t mention drilling in the refuge, saying it would only highlight an area where they differ with the Arizona senator. McCain opposes drilling in that protected land, and some committee members said they would rather bring him around on the issue once he’s in the White House than widen their disagreement now.
“He’s not there yet,” said delegate Jeff Grossman of Oregon. “Prudence would dictate that we leave the text as it is until our candidate catches up with us.”
Delegates endorsed expanded drilling generally, both offshore and in Alaska, North Dakota and Montana, and declared that the Alaskan refuge should not be put off limits to the oil industry permanently.
McCain doesn’t have to follow the platform and it’s unclear whether he will give it much weight; presidential candidates often don’t. But the 112-member committee working on the statement of party principles in Minneapolis is trying not to stray too far from McCain’s views, while also satisfying the conservative base.
Wait, that’s not all. You’ve got the GOP adding global warming to the Republican platform and bragging about its greening:
The National Republican Party for the first time is expected to acknowledge global warming in its 2008 GOP Platform, according to a draft of the document.
“Increased atmospheric carbon has a warming effect on the earth,” the document said. “While the scope and long term consequences of this warming effect are the subject of ongoing research, we believe the United States should take measured and reasonable steps today.”
Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the party’s presumptive presidential nominee, is a strong proponent of
tackling global warming and has co-authored legislation to address the issue. In the GOP’s 2004 platform, the term “global warming” was completely absent.
NRO’s Stephen Spruiell has more on the straddle.
Your Republican Party: Bringing you the capitulation you deserve.
I know: No points for me.

I am so NOT looking forward to the RNC Convention next week.
yeah but when the dnc is doing this, i think we have little choice.
The “saving the earth” thing is nothing new to the GOP platform. It pushed the Clear Skies plan in 2004 (proposed by Bush), which sought to lower damaging emissions through the “proven” cap-and-trade program.
Like I said over at HotAir, the RNC is dead to me.
Spineless.
If Gustav has anything to do with it, no one will even know it’s going on.
God forbid the Republican Party should highlight its differences from the Democrat Party! Gasp!!
This is one of the many reasons why I changed my registration to Independent. I may come back, but the RNC has got a lot of work to do in order to win me back!
Glad I’ve been busy this week!
As far as ANWR goes. I have seen that Alaska is trying to get a land swap deal for the 2000 acres of ANWR that has oil.
That would be WONDERFUL!
Off I go to write another strongly worded letter filled with harsh language.
OK, you’re handed a silver platter with a big heaping helping of momentum, and you do what with it?
incoming 100+ comments from pro-McCain Republicans snarling at those conservatives who still hold strong reservations about voting for McCain. If the “LOTE! LOTE!” rallying cry doesnt work, threaten a post-apocalyptic reality resulting from an Obama presidency and point the finger squarely at the conservatives who still hold strong reservations about voting for McCain, instead of the GOP where it (the finger of blame) truly belongs.
Oh sup guise how r u lololol.
why not take a page from Joe Biden and plagiarize the entire DNC platform?
Thanks. Interchange On-my-soap-box with your moniker and it says all I could say.
Principle in government was killed 100 years ago the moment they sold out to the bankers. Ever since then the appearance of principle has been maintained through artful use of smoke, mirrors and PR.
is the same L_O_T_E_ w/ the G_O_P_
that decided to change the wording from:
English —the OFFICIAL language of the US to English —-the ACCEPTED language…
I’m OFFICIALLY calling for another party>>>>
A PARTY w/ A SPINE >>>>>
What have many of us been saying all along? That McCain is a liberal Loon just like his cohorts at the DNC. Vote for a third party…..There are so many disenchanted all it would take is ONE good candidate to throw this election back to the American people.
What is this “LOTE” that you speak of? “Languages Other Than English”??
WOW-
A_P_A_S…
I like it…
I am not a huge McCain fan either but when they start having even MSM reporters arrested in the streets, then you know you have to stop the the DNC. These are very VERY bad signs of what could come under obama
RNC= Fredo
They just aint too bright.
Glad I left.
Barack HUSSEIN Obama has been sticking both feet in his mouth lately. John McCain has had a golden opportunity handed to him to shore up support with the base.
And he’s squandering it. BO has been reminding us why we don’t want him in the White House. Then John McCain has to go and remind us why we don’t want HIM in there either.
Jeddite –
Every day they poke us in the eye and take another leap left.
Not with my vote!
There is no 3rd party candidate worth voting for IMHO.
Here we go with the “lesser of two evils comments”…..Yeah well it’s gotten much harder to tell the difference. Frankly between McCains Shamnesty and FREE trade Bull I think a moratorium on voting at all may be the way to go….Just read a column by Thomas Friedman who expresses fear at the new “China” and how it will replace the USA…..I hope he remembers to PAT HIMSELF on the back for aiding on that one!
What is a voter to do when a vote for either of the primary candidates will effectively work against the preservation of this country?
We.are.screwed.
If the Republicans are doing all of this just to cover for their presidential candidate, it’s just one more reason not to vote for him.
Of the candidates, McCain is the only one in a position to eliminate anything resembling an opposition party. Think the Democrats are bad now? Wait until the Republicans are Democrats too, compliments of McCain.
As bad as all this is, I can’t possibly allow Obama and Pelosi and Reid run our country. I.JUST.CAN’T.DO.IT.
Ummm, I seem to remember a while back the RNC asking members for input on the platform. For some odd reason, I suspect they ignored the rank and file and did what they want anyway (so much for the we will make changes by working the system). The RNC has lost any resemblance of a conservative party. Glad I left last year.
Ditto on the “no points for me”. Of course, I wouldn’t want them anyway.
Of all elections, this one should be a cakewalk. But it isn’t because of Juan McIdiot.
Both parties seem to be in a race to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s astounding the RNC and McCain could be so incredibly out of touch with the voters…
Juan clearly wants to be the next Democrat POTUS…
Wow… and then the Republican Party wonders why they are loosing members.
No spine… sigh…
Looks like they caved on the three issues that I needed McCain to go right on for me to vote for him… too bad…
LOTE = Lesser of two evils
McCain, there is a two car funeral headed down your street. Let’s see how bad you can screw that up.
BOHICA!
The MH-53E is a beast! I love it.
I’ve got a negative rating with the McAmnesty camp. It’s my badge of honor.
Go Libertarian. They favor limited government, lower taxes, civil liberties, states’ rights, etc.
Not only will I not vote for McCain, but I will have a hard time voting for any Republican.
As John Derbyshire has written, this is the “election from hell.” Of course, almost all of us, former Republicans included, have figured that out. But what can we do? Go to the convention and boo? That would feel great but the fact remains as far as the non-left is concerned, this year is the triumph of the country club republicans, the second most dangerous group in America (HT/Thomas Sowell). All we can do is hope that if McCain wins, he will be so overwhelmed by events that the opportunities for extreme mischief at home will be minimal. That’s it. There’s nothing else.
But let’s be positive. Putin is on record as saying that “McCain scares him” so I guess that is a plus. Seriously, the world is about to get very nasty indeed. The tripartite alliance of Russia-China-Iran (and their terrorist comrades) will be able to hit us from so many directions at once, I don’t see how we can avoid a major conflict (i.e. war). Quoting Ayn Rand, no one should need as much luck as this nation does. Weep and accept our fate. There’s nothing more that can be done.
Just threw in the towel on McAMNESTY. “Pay more in taxes so John McCain can pretend to control the weather”. What’s different from that to — “Pay more in taxes so Lord Apollo Obama can pretend to control the weather” — Except the connection to the lord obama, no difference.
You know who was the biggest supporter of cap and trade — Think hard, you know, you really know. Yes, that’s it, ENRON — Selling hot air.
But Mc Cain and the Republican will.
I’m not a huge fan of McCain either, but I refuse to lie down and let Obama take the helm and do irreversible damage.
So, let’s look back….how did McCain become the Rep. nominee? Was it independents and / or Dems who were allowed to vote / caucus in the primaries? Some states, like mine, allow you to attend any caucus – you are not beholden to the party of your registration. Did they think McCain would be the one for the Dems to easily defeat?
Unfortunately, this is the hand we were dealt. The next POTUS is going to be McCain or Obama.
I will take my chances with McCain.
I am with you Paul Revere. Man-made global warming mania will just be an historical bad dream in a few years. McCain is pro-life and anti-terrorist. Seeing as how there are no other options (based on reality and not a CINO pipe dream), he has got my vote. I am not voting for him, I am voting against Marxism.
That’s how a lot of us are rationalizing it.
Obamas group is currently arresting reporters for trying doing thier jobs. You can act all superior about not voting for either or voting for a thrid party but at the end of the day, it will be obama or mccain. I don’t like it either. But McCain is not arresting reporters right now. The DNC is.
I don’t put much stock in platforms. Campaign promises are notoriously ephemeral.
This is a great reminder to go back and re-register as an Independent, after temporarily registering to vote in the Rep. primary.
Thanks GOP!! For nada.
It will also stop those annoying calls from the GOP fund-raisers, who can’t believe I am not gaga over McCain. “But he doesn’t advocate amnesty! He makes them pay a fine!”, ad nauseum.
Hey tampon, are you a liberal? They are the only folks I know of that get worked up over ENRON.
Points? They are worthless. One time fuzzy math works.
1,000,000 = 1 (and lgm feels good about that)
JUST FOR FUN FROM WHOSE LINE
Thanks for the link. If this producer was arrested for standing on the sidewalk, I sure hope he makes a big stink about it. I’d like to know why the hotel signed a complaint and get all the info. Hopefully, ABC will go through with the investigation and explain everything that happened.
This is what’s so painful. We all got a little boost from the Saddleback “debate”, the junk spewed by the Obama campaign is just nuts, Pelosi gave us some real reasons to get serious and the “drill” stuff was kinda like free beer… but we’re only a couple days away from planting our arses back on terra firma and facing the reality that “our guy” ain’t all that either.
I’m in no mood to swallow global warming money fudgery or unifying illegals with immigrants of solid stature.
–Stuck with the lesser of two evils and not very excited by it.
You may enjoy THIS VIDEO then (then first one is the one I am talking abouT – they are all good).
The party moving further to the left?
I’m shocked. (huge roll eyes thingy)
The key to saving this country from either of these clowns is to get or at least maintain some control over Congress. And the way to do that is to elect Republicans (preferably conservatives, but centrist RINOs are better than Nancy et al).
And because most Presidential elections have some “coattail” winners in the house/senate races, the LOTE is McCain.
I just hope he picks a Conservative VP and doesn’t run for a second term. Given his view of national security issues, I think we can survive 4 years of McCain. Four (or God forbid eight) years of The One would be a disaster that as a nation we may not survive.
I fear for the future of my grandchildren.
American Socialism, the legacy of the least great generation.
We need a Caesar and we get Pleaser… McAmnesty is a tool.
Wow…maybe they DO need to stop showing that Ayers spot.
Bush is sending another hurricane toward New Orleans, wonder if Rove will blow up the Levee again.
Sarc/
Nice one.
That should get you banned. Making fun of names is one thing, calling him that is way over the line. And says far more about YOU than it does him.
There’s no such thing as party unity in either party, be it Democrat or Republican. It’s all about political expediency and how to lie to the American voter. No one wants to make waves in either party. The Clinton delegates won’t even get their roll call vote. They’ll just nod along and take Obummer’s crap.
Then there’s the Republican Party, of which I’ve grown increasingly disenchanted. The Republicans are buying the whole Global Warming scam so that they can win the trend war and out Dem the Dems. Then there are the Dems who not only try to out Repub the Repubs with former Repubs and RINO support but win the freeber vote with their socialized, welfare boondoggle programs. Dontcha know, if you don’t get guaranteed health care and a college education it’s the state’s fault not the individual’s.
Either way, the message from both party platforms is to “pucker up and take it” if you know what I mean.
I think all of us principled conservatives should either not vote or write in a candidate of our choosing. Sure Obama will win, he’s far more liberal than McCain, and he’ll rubber-stamp every piece of liberal legislation, but we’ve got to stand on principle, right? I mean, how much damage can Obama/Pelosi/Reid do?
Be pragmatic people! McCain was selected by a democratic primary process. We may not agree with him on everything, but he is the most conservative, electable candidate we can vote for.
Same goes here. I’m not a huge fan, but the thought of having Odumbo, Reid and Pelosi all at once is spine chilling.
The only thing we CAN do is get McCain into office, and hope he’ll come around on this ANWR and global warming “scheme”.
Sonofdy,
Think the ACLU will chirp in on the reporters being arrested?
Haven’t ice cores and tree rings proved that increases in atmospheric CO2 levels have always LAGGED BEHIND increases in temperature- sometimes by thousands of years?! Which sort of means CO2 goes up because of higher temperatures, not vise versa?
Ugh!
Why are they even wasting money to have a dang convention?
I won’t watch it.
I won’t contribute.
I won’t vote for presidential candidate.
Pandering fools that they are…….don’t waste my time.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
whew, good one…
Wait you were serious, err sorry, serious answer, probably not.

And the artic ice is actualy bigger than it was this time last year….
But, only if you look at all of it! You’re only supposed to look at the glaciers that are melting! Nevermind that most of them are growing, or that the ice in the Antarctic is getting thicker. Get with the program! /sarc

Still flying? Spent my time blue water/brown water.
Damn, am I back in the corner with the dunce cap on for thinking for myself again?
I am not sitting down for this one and have contacted the RNC and McCain’s office. As far as not voting for McCain … BHO as President of the World, a Democrat-led congress, and Supreme Court Justices are reasons enough for me to vote for McCain.
You could vote for a more conservative candidate, gayle.
http://www.baldwin2008.com/
and don’t try to write it off as geological thermal activities just because it could be geological thermal activities either.
Let’s not be fooled by the increase in the polar bear population…could it be a result of global warming? nawww
Yes, there is climate change. The climate always changes, always has, always will. Where I live in Virginia has been both glacial and tropical. That was before people had even appeared to mess anything up. The factors that affect climate far more than human activity are solar activity, volcanic activity, ocean currents and the elliptical nature of Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
Many climatologists contend CO2 levels FOLLOW temperature rise, not cause it. When you figure out how to cap the volcanoes and turn down the Sun, let me know.
Not voting for D-Lite.
Not voting for carbon taxes.
Not voting for amnesty.
I will vote, just not R or D. I want a full nickels worth of difference.
And all the rest of the planets in the solar system warming at the same rate as Earth is purely coincidence. Can’t have anything to do with an increase in Solar irradiance or anything.
I’ll believe in Global Warming when my freezer door stops pumping out ice cubes.
You are all going to end up in the corner with dunce caps on you know. Thats what happens when you think for yourselves….
Hope yours isn’t a Whirlpool.
That may happen sooner than you think.
The bad part about global warming? Not being able to use my back porch as a beer cooler during the winter time. It must be stopped!!!
Vote for Juan, the traitor, McCain.
No sooner he shoves his illegal criminals down America’s throat, Impeach the traitor!
The vp pick is important for McCain because there is a good chance he could die of old age. Not wishing it on him but the guy is old.
Misstated that…point was…the bears don’t seem to mind if there’s global warming or not, there’s a baby bear boom going on up there.
So was Ronald Reagan.
ICE ROUNDING UP THE INVADERS. I posted it on a different thread but thought it belongs here too. Noticed that the comment section is down. HMMMM
That’s what’s so amazing about Obummer. Given Nominee X, Oboohoo wouldn’t qualify as a VP pick!
Note:
Loose = opposite of tight
Lose = opposite of win
You’re = contraction of “you are”, i.e. you’re a fool
Your = implies ownership of something, i.e. your car
Well, that depends on what you mean by “not worth voting for”. If you mean a truly conservative candidate, you need to research more. See Solo’s excellent suggestion above. Pastor Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party has little chance to win this election, but at some point conservatives have to draw a line in the sand. There are truly more choices than this 2 party candidate farce we have going now. Otherwise, we can all follow the other 2 party sheople over the proverbial cliff.
and it’s getting harder and harder to vote against BO…com on GOP and McShame…shhhhh, you still might win this thing.
This may be the first time a Republican President is elected into office by only Democrats voting for him.
LOL. Thank you. That loose instead of lose (which I have seen used many times at different sites) drives me crazy. I just haven’t has the heart to say anything.
Didn’t Michelle send us a link to submit input to the Republican Platform?
What happened?
Also, Is Global Warming real or not?
I can not fathom how mankind could impact the weather to that degree. It takes a lot of hubris to imagine that we are that powerful over the Earth.
I am skeptical as to how we could possibly have that impact. Is Al Gore aware how big the Earth really is and how big the Universe it sits in is, etc?
I’d like a cheeseburger and could you put a side of sunny & 70 with that?
Yeah, but ain’t these the same guys that you just gotta have back in power?
God save us.
Do these people try hard to be this stupid, or does it come naturally? What is it going to take to get these politicians to realize that the American public is fedup with their pandering to illegals?
What I mean by “not worth voting for” is that unless everyone (conservative) votes for Pastor Baldwin (whom I’ve never heard of before today, so that’s not likely) we’ll be looking at President Obama in January. I’m not willing to take that risk. I do believe the GOP is in need of work from the ground up. We need to elect real conservatives locally. I’m fortunate because I live in a more conservative city, overall.
Why I no longer declare myself affiliated with any political party.
When he picks Hillary for vp, it’s over…
