It’s entirely understandable why the Obama campaign would prefer that the files remain out of the public eye until at least November 5, but Kurtz’s careful research is completely within the bounds of reasonable inquiry. One might even argue it’s vital that a man who may be the next leader of the free world be thoroughly vetted.

If Barry O is elected, I foresee a period in American History as dark and depressing as the four years under Jimmah Carter – and we must not allow that to happen again! The truth about Barack Hussein Obama must be revealed to the people of this country, and we must do the right thing and vote – vote for a person, who may not be perfect, but has the interests of this nation at heart – John Sidney McCain!

    Oh, what the hell…

The first point is that calling on supporters to influence programming by calling, writing, e-mailing, whatever is hardly a new tactic or unique to Obama — I seem to recall the Right encouraging exactly the same kind of tactics in opposition to the CBS special on Ronald Reagan a few years back. I don’t know who started this game, but our side isn’t the only one playing it. Paybacks are hell.

Second, you’re equating flooding a switchboard and sending e-mails with Gestapo tactics? That’s pathetic. Burning down a switchboard…that’s Gestapo. Dialing your cell phone…not so much. Apparently conservatives are such a sniveling group of wimps that they start quaking whenever some kid turns off their iPod long enough to dial ten digits. I’m not in favor of these tactics, by either side, but you wrote the book on them — cf http://michellemalkin.com/2008/05/23/of-donuts-and-dumb-celebrities/
that little tempest in a donut shop. I feel like Patton standing on the ridge watching Rommel’s tanks advance: “You b*******s, we read your book.”

Finally, a long time ago, a buddy of mine was working on a bus trip that Clinton Administration allies had organized in favor of his health care plan. Rush Limbaugh publicized the route, so that screaming, hateful mobs disrupted events at almost every stop. On one occasion, the locals physically attacked the bus riders as they got off. The local police had to intervene — by arresting the peaceful riders. My friend, who stands about 6′8″ and has flaming red hair kind of stands out and so he got to spend the night in the pokey, for trying to organize a legal health care rally.

That’s brownshirt stuff. That’s the way the right wing works. Try not to get too frightened over a few phone calls.

The trouble is, they couldn’t refute Kurtz. If they had said “You are wrong” and backed it up with something other than “We don’t like what you’re saying” then fine. Show that Kurtz is wrong and it’ll be over. As for the Reagan piece, there was more than enough evidence to show that it was not being truthful and accurate about him.

Second, you’re equating flooding a switchboard and sending e-mails with Gestapo tactics? That’s pathetic. Burning down a switchboard…that’s Gestapo…

I have no problem with people calling to complain. Heck, I remember doing that when the Senate tried to pass amnesty for illegals. My problems is, again, they called just because they didn’t like what was being said. Not because they wanted to refute the evidence.

The liberal media does not need to use threatening tactics. All they need to do is to ask Katie, Brian and Charlie to do their work for them. All of the big 3 are almost intoxicated with excitement at Barack’s acceptance speech. All three have started the silly “45th anniversary of Dr. King’s I have a dream speech”. All of them are starting the cliche that Obama is the successor to Dr. King, that to not vote for Obama is to deny Dr. King’s legacy. Chris Matthews should get an extra shot of whiskey to calm his legs and beyond when The One speaks tonight. We all know that his speech will be cliche ridden and filled with pithy sayings. Obama will say that “he respects John McCain’s service” (which he does not, never did, never will) and then go on to slur McCain big time. And the media will report of how respectful Obama was to McCain, despite McCain McCarthyite tactics. It is all so predictable, even the refusal of the three networks to ask Biden about his plaigirism history starting at Syracuse University.

Au contraire. I do think that the WLN tactics are embraced by both sides at all times, that they suck, but that to lift them to the level Gestapo tactics (not to mention all the armed insurrection blather) is sheerest hysteria.

None of the examples you mention involve trying to silence criticism of a candidate before the election. That’s the point here. You left out “have the Supreme Court steal it for you.” There have been, by the way, no documented cases of voter fraud turning an election in many years, despite many efforts to prove them. (Yes — fire those ACORN people, but they’re just bozos trying to make a quota).

I’m pretty sure that when the McCain people tried desperately to have that NYT story about him being in bed (literally and figuratively) with Washington’s lobbying class, that was an attempt to to “silence criticism of a candidate before the election.”

And since when is enthusiasm for a candidate a bad thing. As I recall, a good portion of the Republican Party has been genuflecting in the direction of St. Ronnie for going on three decades. Talk about false idols…

I never said it was OK. Scattered bozos submitting false names is bad, arrest them. But it’s not at the level of orchestrating a massive turnout of illegal/imaginary voters. In the first case, there is no follow-up: no one is actually going to to show up and vote under the false names. In the second case, elections can be changed. Kind of misdemeanor vs. felony. I doubt that these guys care whether they fake-register Rs or Ds, but it probably never really occurs to them to check the R box.

I’ve said it before: the donkeys’ “solution” to “swiftboating” is nothing more than to try to intimidate anyone who dares to question or criticize their Chosen One.

Kerry’s problem in 2004 wasn’t that he wasn’t “aggressive” enough in answering his critics: it was that he had no answer, and he knew it. Once the swifties found a way around the blockade of silence erected by the donkeys’ media arm, Kerry was doomed.

But to be a donkey is to be mentally lazy. And the lazy man’s take on Kerry’s defeat is to assume that his entire chain of command from his swift boat days were just a bunch of liars on Karl Rove’s secret payroll.

That’s how they can say to this day that the swifties’ allegations were “discredited” when in fact none of them were. Pure mental laziness, which bootstraps itself into pathological dishonesty amongst themselves and with everyone else.

Now, there’s a new “pack of liars” who are sifting through Hopenchange’s sordid past. Aha, “swiftboating” rears its ugly head again! But this time, the donkeys are ready. No, not ready to answer the questions on their merits — not only would that require too much mental energy, it’d also lead to multiple painful realizations about the God-Emperor. So take the lazy man’s alternative: Shout them down! Threaten them with legal action! Use the Justice Department to silence them!

    Yeah, that’s the ticket…

But as I said on a different thread, the problem with being stupid is that a dumb idea you think is brilliant doesn’t always impress people who aren’t stupid themselves. As Stanley Kurtz is in the process of demonstrating.
