U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.
Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.
Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.
In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.
As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.
Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

…Palin will argue that in fact Obama has no more experience than she does, and that Palin has the advantage of sharing McCain’s views (and thus being right) on the surge, Russian ambitions, and meetings with state terror sponsors. The VP debate against Biden may be dicey, but the McCain camp knows full well that a vice-presidential debate isn’t going to make or break their candidate. In short, McCain is hoping that Palin is good enough on this score for a number two pick against a Democratic ticket headed by a man with virtually the same meager national security credentials.
As to the second, Palin has much to offer McCain. On a non-political level few can doubt her Q-factor. (She will be the first former beauty queen to run on a national ticket.) The daughter of a teacher and mother of five, she has an ebullient personality and an excellent TV presence. The Right will be entranced : a pro-life hunter with a passion for domestic energy development? And in the battle for “change” she has the record of reform and the identity of a complete Washington outsider. Finally, as a lifelong NRA member, an outdoorswoman, and a western governor she may provide extra help in mountain and western states such as Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico which are certain to be in play.
On the policy front, Palin can make the case that the Democratic program of higher taxes, more spending, and a government takeover of health care is a proven loser. She will argue that she can bring practical experience from as far outside the Beltway as one can get. And, of course, the presence of a woman on the ticket creates instantaneous excitement and puts into play Clinton voters looking for a new champion.
The pick also tells us something about McCain: he thinks he can win. He was not willing to rock the boat with his conservative base. He can use Palin on offense to make a run at women voters and on defense to blunt the populist attacks from the Democrats. And it shows he understands the need to generate enthusiasm and “newness” in his own campaign.

I think there a lot of people right now that are projecting conservatism onto Sarah Palin. I asked this question during yesterday’s euphoria and I will asked it again. How do we know Sarah Palin is an actual conservative?
I am aware of her Pro-life position and her churchgoing, but I have heard nothing else of substance beyond other people’s opinions. Very little is known about the Governor beyond the cover story. I fear we are being set up for a big fall. The fact of the matter is McCain still hates conservatives and once we put him in The White House, he will slam the door right in our face.
Willow Rosenberg was a witch on Buffy, but didn’t really become one until Season 4, roughly 2000. Willow Palin is 14 years old – the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t start until 1997, and the movie didn’t have a character named Willow. Sorry I don’t have the link, but Gov. Palin has said that Willow comes from the name of a town in Alaska, and Piper comes from the fact that it’s a rare, cool name. Track comes from her and her husband’s love of the sport, Bristol for another area of Alaska, and so forth.

I know Sarah Palin is a great conservative because I’ve done plenty of research on her before she was picked as VP. I was very impressed then and am on a pink cloud now. We need to build momentum against Barack and stop him in November.

It was a wise move by McCain, and renewed my flagging support for him, and, apparently, many others.

As for your obsession with passports:
According to government stats, about 20% of Americans have passports. That’s roughly 60 million people. Not bad for a country with huge oceans on both sides of it, and historically with no passport requirements to visit Canada, Mexico and many Caribbean destinations.
Millions of Europeans come here each year, passports in hand, to visit the U.S.
Once they arrive they, just like American citizens, can enjoy a great variety of natural beauty, recreational areas, resorts, and modern American culture, without having to obtain visas or getting passports stamped.
Want to see mountains, deserts and prairies? We’ve got the Great American West. World-class beaches? Hop on a plane to Florida or Hawaii. Glaciers? Take a cruise to Alaska. Vibrant big cities? How about New York, LA, Chicago, Miami…. Broadway, Disney World, Six Flags, Sea World…
All in one country. Take your pick.

Wow Domsdale…Thanks. That was really nice of you to say and completely unexpected. Made me literally blush.
Couple of things:
1) The Palin children have all been named for places in Alaska. While the Libs may like to name their children after witches, the latest fad, and completely un-pronounceable strings of vowels that leave one scratching their head as to why their OB/GYN was allowed to administer that much pain medication while delivering a child, and other forms of honoring “Gaia”, the Palins have no hidden meaning to their childrens names other than they have places that mean something to them either from a memory or for it’s natural beauty, and thus named their children after them.
2)After reading the eloquent post above concerning Switzerland, I am again reminded that the Nazi Parachite Elite would climb the Alps, pick said flower and wear it in their uniform as a symbol denoting “True Warriors”. Even more apropo following that post. Gotta love that Jewish Gold that to this day, Switzerland refuses to release to it’s rightful owners following the Nazi pilaging between 1932-1945 and beyond.
3)While reading the web page for The Golden Calf’s racist faux church, I couldn’t help but be amused at the fact that they take great pride in “…the testimonies and the oral literature of Africans throughout the Diaspora.” I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to read “Oral” literature, and find that such a thing is a complete impossiblity. Mayhaps Mr. Obama might consider getting his favorite preacher, his mentor and “Spiritual Advisor” as well as member of his family a dictionary where he would be able to see that the definition of “Literature” has to do with the WRITTEN word, quite literally put down on paper.
4) The bile is just getting started from the Left, and again…the simple fact that they are making things up shows that there is nothing there, as well as the fact that they are really, really worried both about even more TRUE filt coming out about their chosen false idol, bit that they are actually watching their chances of winning back the White house for possibly another 12 years blow up in their faces.
Maybe next time they will actually look into the person they decide to support rather than just going on looks and the ability to sound good alone.
Even today, over 24 hours after the announcement, you can still see the look of fear in the eyes and on the faces of every single Dem and Lib that comes on to talk about Sarah. And that laughter you hear from them is not of mirth, it is the nervous laughter of one that just got their ass handed to them and told to eat up.

McCain and Palin will be in Mississippi tomorrow ahead of Gustav. Some may see this as PC, but it is what leaders should do. No doubt Obama will follow suit.
I am from Mississippi and have family there 120 mile inland. When President Nixon visited after the destruction of Camille (to the Coast) it touched many hearts, the same as when President Bush visited the Mississippi Coast.
Please pray for those in the path of Gustav. It is predicted that what was not destroyed by Katrina may be by Gustav in New Orleans. Baton Rouge and surrounding areas will have hurricane strength winds as well. The storm surge and winds will be east of the storm, the worst possible path for New Orleans and the Miss. Gulf Coast.
Governors Jindal of LA and Barbour of Mississippi are doing all they can to get people out of harms way. If they choose to stay in NO and in the path, they stay at their own risk.
I pray that this storm will be weakened, and people will be safe (unlike the despicable Michael Moore who hopes for destruction).
The GOP Convention is not going to be about speeches and fluff, it is going to be dealing with this storm and helping fellow Americans.
May God show mercy on the people of Mississippi and Louisiana.

Hurricane Gustav is going to be a devastating hurricane – quite possibly worse than Katrina – I certainly hope not – but there is no avoiding it.

I believe anyone here can defend themselves without help…as for eidelweiss from my observations, he talks as though he is a foreigner who constantly derides America and American Conservatives while ignoring the fact his own EU doesn’t have the cahones to be that wonderful replacement for the US in terms of foreign policy or social/moral values when those issues do come up. That is his opinion, and he should have the skin thickness to bear criticism as do I.
AS far as I am concerned eidelweiss, lgm, et al are as welcome as you are to make a post…you should also have the thick skin to take what may come your way from those that do not agree with you partly or wholly.

Up until now, with so much talk about Obama, you would have thought that he was the only one running. I was just plain sick of hearing his name, then along comes Sarah Palin to take the spotlight off of him for a while. A strong woman who isn’t afraid to get down and dirty.

I suggest you ask Sarah Palin if she thinks John McCain is a conservative.
I disagree with McCain on some issues…but I think that is going to be true for us all – in relation to any elected official – since they have to make decisions that affect everyone – across the political spectrum. If elected officials just vote their ideology – nothing will ever get done in DC.
Is a Mitt Romney or any other conservative Republican candidate – that much more conservative than McCain? There are differences between all of them – but they are all conservatives.
The election is only 66 days away.
I know a lot of people who comment on this blog think of themselves as “true conservatives”. I’d like to challenge them – to prove it – and comment here how they are not only helping the McCain/Palin ticket to win – but conservative-minded candidates in their own voting districts to win.
