U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.
Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.
Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us – Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.
In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.
As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.
Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

“The selection of Governor Palin is great news for conservatives, for the party and for the country. Her dedication to principle, her courage both before and after her election as Governor of Alaska and her personal qualities make her a perfect choice for Vice President. I predict any conservatives who have been lukewarm thus far in their support of the McCain candidacy will work their hearts out between now and November for the McCain – Palin ticket.”

…Palin will argue that in fact Obama has no more experience than she does, and that Palin has the advantage of sharing McCain’s views (and thus being right) on the surge, Russian ambitions, and meetings with state terror sponsors. The VP debate against Biden may be dicey, but the McCain camp knows full well that a vice-presidential debate isn’t going to make or break their candidate. In short, McCain is hoping that Palin is good enough on this score for a number two pick against a Democratic ticket headed by a man with virtually the same meager national security credentials.
As to the second, Palin has much to offer McCain. On a non-political level few can doubt her Q-factor. (She will be the first former beauty queen to run on a national ticket.) The daughter of a teacher and mother of five, she has an ebullient personality and an excellent TV presence. The Right will be entranced : a pro-life hunter with a passion for domestic energy development? And in the battle for “change” she has the record of reform and the identity of a complete Washington outsider. Finally, as a lifelong NRA member, an outdoorswoman, and a western governor she may provide extra help in mountain and western states such as Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico which are certain to be in play.
On the policy front, Palin can make the case that the Democratic program of higher taxes, more spending, and a government takeover of health care is a proven loser. She will argue that she can bring practical experience from as far outside the Beltway as one can get. And, of course, the presence of a woman on the ticket creates instantaneous excitement and puts into play Clinton voters looking for a new champion.
The pick also tells us something about McCain: he thinks he can win. He was not willing to rock the boat with his conservative base. He can use Palin on offense to make a run at women voters and on defense to blunt the populist attacks from the Democrats. And it shows he understands the need to generate enthusiasm and “newness” in his own campaign.

. Sarah Louise Palin (nee Heath) was born Feb., 1964, in Sandpoint, Idaho. Her family moved to Alaska when Sarah was an infant. Her father, Chuck, is a retired schoolteacher.
2. She attended Wasilla High School where she played point guard on the state champion basketball team. Her nickname was “Sarah Barracuda.”
3. Palin graduated in 1987 from the University of Idaho with a degree in journalism. She worked briefly as a sports reporter in Anchorage.

You asked the question wrong. You should have asked, “If you came across a perp who was raping and/or murdering your spouse…would you be upset about all the times you worked against a person’s right to keep and carry a side-arm and regret not being able to shoot the bastard on sight?”
McCain’s choice makes no difference to me. I will still be voting 3rd party this year. I fear McCain will co-opt Palin and damage her conservative credentials as she will be forced to support McCain’s un-conservative positions on immigration, global warming, the economy, campaign finance reform, and any number of other positions he holds.
I don’t expect Palin to convince John McCain to change his mind on any of these issues. Thus, she will fall in line and get tainted by McCain’s policies and another promising conservative leader will be damaged by association with stupid, liberal policies.
At least we still have Jindal in 4 years. I hope he skips the entire convention.

The economy grew a robust 3.3% in the second quarter. Granted we issues to fix like low gas prices, but the Dems are full of it. They’ve got nothing to run on, except for the people that want more handouts.
1) Winning the war in Iraq
2) Winning the war in Afghanistan
3) An economy that is NOT in recession.
4) A bottoming housing market

Damn guys! Ol’ Travlinman is a burly man’s man, but when Palin was introduced, I began blubbering like an Obama Metrosexual, little sissy. If this makes me have an “Oprah” moment, what will it do to the electorate?
And that, of course, is your God given right. But don’t kid yourself. A 3rd party vote is a vote for Obama, and a vote for at least one and more likely two liberal activist supreme court justices.
But that’s cool. When they re-institute the fairness doctrine, replace or strengthen the “assault weapon” and sic the justice department on Conservative activists at least you’ll have your principles to make you feel better. That’s all that really matters.
More than anything she is the Anti-Obama.
Pro Life – with a down’s syndrome child she kept, instead of Obama;s vote to allow an aborted downs syndrome child to be killed.
Clean – she cleaned up alaska politics, versus Obama’s being steeped in the Chicago Machine politics (Ayers).
Conservative – Obama is the most left wing member of the Senate.
She visited our soldiers in Landstulh because its the right thing to do – Obama bypassed it because he could not get a photo op out of it.
Executive Experience – at least 2 years running the state of Alaska. Obama? None.
Guns – lifetime NRA, Obama – Liar.
And she wants to drill ANWR – and knowss the environment, Obama just pukes up Sierra club bilge he has been fed and has no knowledge on his own. She’s better than McCain on this one.

Sunday our family(nuclear) had dinner with a fine young man from Alaska, a member who’s on a 2yr visit here.
Didn’t know at the time The Gov, was on McCain’s list, but we talked about her.
I wanted to know what a native of the icy reaches thought about the way the political situation fell apart, and how Madam Governer was doing in her quest to pick-up-the-pieces. He hadn’t enough good things to say. Somewhat enamered would only weakly cover his mood. The genuine affection he had for her and her displayed strength of character was refreshing to say the least!
It pleases me that JM rolled the dice, and actually was a maverick for a change! From what our guest said, she has enough steel in her spine to stand up to anyone.
I am very. very. very …. very. very pleased!

Hillary is, ironically, and more ironically the Democrat party who have really made women as potential candidates for President or VP office a realistic possibility.
It is also even more ironic that the first woman to actually be nominated to such a position is a Republican.
For Democrats and especially Hillary, this has got to
stinksting.A congressperson at either the state or federal level doesn’t actually have to do much of anything involving leadership. As Obama has shown, voting “present” is sufficient for survival. That’s not the case with a governor or even a mayor. I will concede that being in the U.S. Senate may give a person more exposure to foreign policy, but even a short stint as a governor or mayor is exponentially better experience at leading.
I would even be willing to argue that Gray Davis or Gavin Newsom is more qualified to run for President than Obama. I really think this argument isn’t going to take them very far.
I just switched from Fox to some of the other news channels… why do the reporters on the other channels have a look of panic on their faces? LOL

I was worried when my wife woke me up to tell me that this was his pick. But then I just spent the past couple of hours reading up on her. This was not only an incredibly brilliant pick, but it has effectively stole the thunder of Obama’s acceptance speech. The Dems are obviously livid and spluttering, the woman is pro-life and has effectively stolen the thunder from the yawn fest of the Dem convention that took place here in Denver.
Just wathced Governor Palin’s speech. She will bring an energy to the ticket that will bring them to victory. Simpmly AMAZING!
