The McCain VP choice: Not Huck, Romney, Pawlenty, or Palin(?); Palin buzz alive, multiple sources confirm

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 29, 2008 08:43 AM

Is this it?

Scroll for updates…

It’s not Huckabee. It’s not Romney. It’s not Pawlenty.

Here’s the case for Sarah Palin. The rumors of a chartered plane leaving from Alaska have been flying around.

Hey, let’s just hope it’s not Juan Hernandez.

9:05am Eastern. Not Palin. She’s in Alaska, acc. to ABC.

Here’s the rest of the female shortlist.

Via the Dayton Daily News:

A Gulfstream IV jet owned by a firm in Kirkland, Wash., landed at Hook Field Municipal Airport late Thursday night is believed to have had Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on board as a passenger.

National media outlets have identified the first-term Alaska governor, the first woman elected to the position, as a possible vice presidential candidate for Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

McCain is in Dayton today and is expected to announce his running mate sometime later today at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.

According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.

Could it be Carly Fiorina?

CNBC has a source telling them it’s Palin.

Club for Growth gives thumbs up:

With all the talk about Sarah Palin being picked for vice-president, the Club for Growth PAC described the Alaska Governor as a genuine reformer who has taken on wasteful spending in her own state.

“At a time when many Republicans are still clinging to pork-barrel politics, Governor Palin has quickly become a leader on this issue,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “She is a principled reformer who understands how badly wasteful spending has marred the Republican brand.”

Governor Palin has proven herself to be a reformer unafraid to take on the establishment, which she did early on when she took on the incumbent Republican governor of Alaska in 2006. Only nine months in office, Governor Palin instructed the state to abandon the notorious pork project secured by Alaska’s politicians, the $223 million “Bridge to Nowhere.” While many Republicans in Congress are afraid to antagonize Washington’s biggest porkers, Sarah Palin stood strong for fiscal responsibility. Palin is also a persistent advocate of drilling in ANWR and expanding America’s domestic oil supply in general.

Here’s the Palin for VP blog.

Another source tells the Chicago Trib that it’s Palin:

A Republican source confirms that John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Campaign officials, however, remain mum this morning.

McCain is expected to announce his choice at a rally in Dayton later.

Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska, elected in 2006. She was also the youngest ever elected at the age of 42. She is the mother of five children, the youngest of whom was born in April and has Down’s Syndrome. She ran on a clean government platform in ’06 to defeat the incumbent Republican Governor Frank Murkowski.

Allah’s woozy.

Levin is on board.

***

Palin is solid on life issues, taxes, fiscal conservatism, energy, and the environment. Readers are asking me what Palin’s stance on immigration is. According to the On the Issues website, she has no recorded stance on immigration.

Here’s a case against Palin.

More reax from grass-roots conservatives:

“”Conservatives will be thrilled with this pick. Governor Palin is a down the line mainstream conservative who will energize the base and reach across party lines attracting women voters, independents and blue collar Democrats. With almost one fourth of women voters undecided, Senator McCain has made a brilliant choice by picking a blue collar conserviatve woman who will excite the Republican Party and lay out the welcome matt for independents and disaffected Clinton voters.

“Governor Palin is a terrific contrast to the all Washington ticket of Obama-Biden. She is a wonderful contrast to Biden, and a truly outside the beltway pick. Looks like the glass ceiling has been broken not by Hillary Clinton but by Senator McCain and Governor Palin.”

Fox says it, too: Palin.

Important Update from Rev. Rob Schenck, VIP Guest of the John McCain Campaign as VP Announcement is Made Today
Contact: Peggy Birchfield, 202-546-8329, ext 103; Rev. Rob Schenck, 703-447-7686 mobile; both with National Clergy Council

DAYTON, Ohio, Aug. 29 /Christian Newswire/ — President of the conservative and pro-life National Clergy Council, Rev. Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), will be a VIP guest at John McCain’s campaign announcement today in Dayton Ohio when he will name his Vice Presidential running mate. Mr. Schenck, who just returned from the Democratic National Convention, was told this morning by confidential sources that Senator McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a pro-life Catholic.

Rev. Schenck states “If indeed Governor Palin has been selected as John McCain’s running mate it is reason for pro-life conservatives to rejoice. If this is indeed the case, it is important to note that this ticket will include a formidable and experienced executive who is also a woman, the combination is powerful and will prove irresistible to many religious and other conservatives.”

Rev. Schenck is available for further comment over the weekend at mobile 703-447-7686 and during weekday hours at 202-546-8329, extension 101.

In fact, I guarantee you that Mitt Romney has personally created more jobs than Bill Clinton could ever dream of, AND Romney has closed down less factories than Bill Clinton has closed down military bases in his lifetime.

I sincerely doubt you are a Republican conservative. You are a caricature of of a Republican conservative that eminates from small minded liberals – like Obama supporters.

And your line of attack on a Palin pick is typical of what we will see coming out of the Obama campaign. The problem with that line of attack is that it exposes both Obama’s and Biden’s total lack of any executive experience. And a Palin pick would go a long way to negating Obama’s claim to being a Washington “outsider”. Next to Palin, Obama looks like the ultimate Washington insider.

we have three senators, 1 with little to no experience as a senator on the top of the Dem ticket. Who has not held a position longer than 3 years and never accomplished or lived up to his talents. the other senator at the top of the ticket has held only 3 jobs in his life Navy, Congress and Senate. His last job has been for 20+ years. He has accomplishments, lived up to and beyond his talents.

Tell me again how is Obama more qualified to be President? Palin isn’t the top of the ticket, McCain is. So what if he runs a good campaign. Doesn’t make me fell better about him being the CIC, especially since my husband is active duty.

From what I’ve read about Sarah Palin, provided she doesn’t have any “skeletons” in her closet, she’d be a great choice who would appeal to not only a large female base – non-feminists in other words – but also many of the men who still cling to their rifles and bibles.

Shoot – she has more executive expericence then the “anointed one” and would bring a breath of fresh air to the campaign.

If it is Palin, the campaign pictures are going to look odd – McCain will come across as a rich playboy geezer who just found himself a hottie. But at least it isn’t Huckabee. Unfortunately, I really don’t think she is going to help that much with disgruntled Hilary voters. Those types are obsessed with abortion and given that Palin is pro-life, or so I’m told, she will not appeal to them at all. She may in fact turn them off completely.

That being said, and to be fair, none of the choices were very good this year. Yeah, Mitt was okay, but he never seemed to have the requisite fire in his belly. He was nice and had a strong chin (imagine him playing Batman) but that was about it. He was never able to sell his acumen as a business man. He was no Reagan. Sorry. As a candidate he would just have been another nice-guy Republican who was no match for the world, and we’ve already done that. Never again.

So good luck Ms. Palin. Biden the Windy might stomp you at the debate, but nobody watches or cares about the vice-presidential debate anyway.

Really? You’d feel better with someone whose last big decision was about the salmon run?

You’re the one who brought up “executive” skills, btw.

Obama’s spent the last decade hammering out a coherent vision of America’s role in the world and our economic future, and developed a detailed, coherent plan for realizing that vision (go to the web site — more substance than you can eat in a single sitting). He has traveled the world, mingled with statesmen and students and the people of Chicago’s South Side. He’s shown the political chops to vanquish Hillary and fight the golden boy of the American media to a draw (and is pulling back ahead).
