The McCain VP choice: Not Huck, Romney, Pawlenty, or Palin(?); Palin buzz alive, multiple sources confirm

Is this it?
Scroll for updates…
It’s not Huckabee. It’s not Romney. It’s not Pawlenty.
Here’s the case for Sarah Palin. The rumors of a chartered plane leaving from Alaska have been flying around.
Hey, let’s just hope it’s not Juan Hernandez.
9:05am Eastern. Not Palin. She’s in Alaska, acc. to ABC.
Here’s the rest of the female shortlist.
Via the Dayton Daily News:
A Gulfstream IV jet owned by a firm in Kirkland, Wash., landed at Hook Field Municipal Airport late Thursday night is believed to have had Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on board as a passenger.
National media outlets have identified the first-term Alaska governor, the first woman elected to the position, as a possible vice presidential candidate for Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
McCain is in Dayton today and is expected to announce his running mate sometime later today at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
According to Rich Bevis of B&B Aero, the fixed-based operator at Hook Field, the jet, a Gulfstream IV which has the flight range to fly from Alaska to Europe, landed at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.
Bevis said the woman “was a real close match to Palin” and added that the flight crew that’s based in the Seattle area was told to fly to Anchorage to pick up their party and fly to Middletown.
Could it be Carly Fiorina?
CNBC has a source telling them it’s Palin.
Club for Growth gives thumbs up:
With all the talk about Sarah Palin being picked for vice-president, the Club for Growth PAC described the Alaska Governor as a genuine reformer who has taken on wasteful spending in her own state.
“At a time when many Republicans are still clinging to pork-barrel politics, Governor Palin has quickly become a leader on this issue,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “She is a principled reformer who understands how badly wasteful spending has marred the Republican brand.”
Governor Palin has proven herself to be a reformer unafraid to take on the establishment, which she did early on when she took on the incumbent Republican governor of Alaska in 2006. Only nine months in office, Governor Palin instructed the state to abandon the notorious pork project secured by Alaska’s politicians, the $223 million “Bridge to Nowhere.” While many Republicans in Congress are afraid to antagonize Washington’s biggest porkers, Sarah Palin stood strong for fiscal responsibility. Palin is also a persistent advocate of drilling in ANWR and expanding America’s domestic oil supply in general.
Here’s the Palin for VP blog.
Another source tells the Chicago Trib that it’s Palin:
A Republican source confirms that John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Campaign officials, however, remain mum this morning.
McCain is expected to announce his choice at a rally in Dayton later.
Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska, elected in 2006. She was also the youngest ever elected at the age of 42. She is the mother of five children, the youngest of whom was born in April and has Down’s Syndrome. She ran on a clean government platform in ‘06 to defeat the incumbent Republican Governor Frank Murkowski.
Allah’s woozy.
Levin is on board.
***
Palin is solid on life issues, taxes, fiscal conservatism, energy, and the environment. Readers are asking me what Palin’s stance on immigration is. According to the On the Issues website, she has no recorded stance on immigration.
Here’s a case against Palin.
More reax from grass-roots conservatives:
“”Conservatives will be thrilled with this pick. Governor Palin is a down the line mainstream conservative who will energize the base and reach across party lines attracting women voters, independents and blue collar Democrats. With almost one fourth of women voters undecided, Senator McCain has made a brilliant choice by picking a blue collar conserviatve woman who will excite the Republican Party and lay out the welcome matt for independents and disaffected Clinton voters.
“Governor Palin is a terrific contrast to the all Washington ticket of Obama-Biden. She is a wonderful contrast to Biden, and a truly outside the beltway pick. Looks like the glass ceiling has been broken not by Hillary Clinton but by Senator McCain and Governor Palin.”

True, but like I said, if there are none there, the Dems will be happy to make up some. : )
Empty Suit and Gas Bag meet Maverick and Reformer. Palin is a great pick. The One is only two points ahead of McCain with women – and the diehard Hillary supporters would most likely appreciate his pick.
Woo Hoo! McCain’s camp just told Fox News it really is Palin. If he fires Hernandez next I could actually see myself voting for this ticket.
Trying to take a out a State Trooper who beat his wife is hardly going to be considered a “Skeleton” in Sarah’s closet by most voters..
Please forgive me if this has been brought up already; it’s a long thread. But doesn’t selecting someone with less than two years kind of torpedo the argument that the president is inexperienced because of his less than four years in the Senate?
The VP has to be ready in a moment’s notice. Especially when the president may be 72 with skin cancer.
BemusedLib said:
Heh, you’re comparing a (possible) VP pick versus the top of the Dem’s ticket. I suppose that is wiser than comparing Obama to the top of the Republican’s ticket.
NBC news confirms it is Palin.
Bemused Lib sez:
Hi! Could you cite this please?
ITS PALIN, FOX NEWS CONFIRMS WITH CAMPAIGN SOURCE.
Fox News just confirmed–It’s Palin.
Wow! She is a powerful pick. Palin is marked contract to both Obama and Biden: She is successful, accomplished, intelligent, and more than capable with her credentials. If she is the pick, the ‘lil pencil-necked Marxist and his plagiarist uncle have already lost. Get them new nappies, they just crapped their pants. What a hoot!
So, it’s Palin. I’ve got tears in my eyes. As a conservative woman I have to say I am so excited about this. Way to go McCain!
not guessing. Will wait and see.
Rusty, I’d say no because she isn’t at the top of the ticket, & Obama is always talking about “change” & the Washington “old Guard”.. That would be a tough sell for him on Palin..
“a marked contrast”
From what I just read, she describes herself as a “maverick” too. I am worried that I will find she is middle of the road on social issues and spending. About like mcamensty. Especailly on the most important issue facing us today, the invasion of illegals (IMHO of course). Sigh. But it makes sense he chose her since he is trying really hard to pick up the disenchanted HRC supporters which are primarily women. Staus quo for mccain.
That’s just what I was thinking. As racist/sexist as we’re supposed to be, we put in Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Sandra Day O’Connor…
Carl Cameron in the Nutter Centere just reporting that he has comfirmation from the McCain Campaign in a backstage discussion that it is indeed Sara Palin that has been selected for the VP nominee …
Wow… you’re not biased or anything are you?
There’s only 3 people in Alaska? Really? Governor of the largest US state, with a vested interest in drilling, lauded for fighting corruption in her own party. And yet you say that’s “no experience”.
And then there’s the whole evangelicals are “evil Mormon-bigots” angle. I’m an evangelical. I have lots of evangelical friends. None of us care that he’s a Mormon. We care that he has flip-flopped on critical conservative positions in the past few years, without any explanation.
I think you need to check your crash helmet… I think the strap’s cutting off the blood circulation to your head.
As opposed to 143 days in the senate…or as a first lady?
OMG! I can’t believe this! I’m at my desk at work crying!
HAHAHAHA – Dream on! He’s probably pegged to be McCain’s Head of Homeland Security to make sure that border fence gets finished: )

Better an inexperienced VP than an inexperienced president.
As Biden said, being president doesn’t lend itself to on the job training. But being VP does.
Barring some unforeseen disaster, McCain has won.
ouch cheapseat
That “Case against Palin” link to the Dallas Morning News seemed to be a rather weak case.
CNN confirms Palin!
Fox, CNN confirm. CBS says Palin’s parents are staying by the radio to hear “exciting news”.
Fox is now confirming it’s Pallin.
An act of both genious and relief; McCain now has my vote!
“Here’a a little ‘Hope’n'Change” back at ya, Barry-O!!!!”
I heard one of Obama’s campaign advisers looked “Pale & visibly disturbed” when he was told.. hahahahaha!!
I thought he always looked that way, but heck, what do I know??
No, seriously, they are terrified!
I thought that wasn’t a problem for you?
LOL. Yes, it took him ten years of grueling mental gymnnastics to find out “hope” and “change” would work for coverall responses to every policy question posed him. Thanks for the snort!
Thanks for the Biography. That is a great start. Biographies of the US Founders, what a concept for a possible VP to be knowledgeable of our founding fathers.
When I first heard this taken seriously this morning, I was intrigued and wondered if that supposed “abuse of power” state issue had been resolved which I had been thinking would rule her out. I had been so impressed about what she had said about her new baby with Downs and her wanting to drill in ANWAR. I googled her again to refresh my memory about what I had been reading the past couple of months. When I saw her life experience, her oldest going to Iraq (after just reading that Obama’s people said they were going to “milk” Biden’s son’s deployment), her personal life I just broke down in sobs. I’m not what you’d call a feminist and I’d have been happy with the usual white male as long he was pro-life, but the realization that a woman, this woman, who can be a national witness to the value of all life and who knows what it’s like to be a proud mom of a child who decides to defend our country, this woman is the type of person I’d like to be or have as my friend. I couldn’t watch Obama last night (I kept up on MM and Hotair) and I thought the tears and euphoria were over-the-top, but now I find myself feeling the same way about Governor Palin and I think I’ll be crying, tears of happiness, many times before the day is over if this is true.
And here I was thinking it was his jock strap.
sowwy, couldn’t resist
Rusty

FM, I knew I liked you for reasons other than your wisdom. I have hunted near Wallace, Stanley and over at White Bird and love the state of Idaho. Used to have friends living in Boise. My intention (or hope!) is to retire somewhere in the Eastern Idaho or Western Montana areas. I love to hunt and fish and feel at home in the Rockies. God’s Country.
If Shirley McClain is right, I may be a reincarnated mountain man.
Hey, cheapset.. Why don’t you go somewhere where you’re welcome, if you’re going to throw vulgar & mindless insults at people from behind the safety of the computer your mom bought you.
We all know you still live with her..
Obama has been a Senator a lot longer than 143 days. Just counting days in session is disingenuous.
I also liked Matt Yglesias’s point.
Alaska, despite its Republican controlled government, is very, very socialist. So much that there is no possible comparison to any other state.
This pick would help Ted Stevens. I imagine that doesn’t excite too many people here, but McCain is probably thinking he needs every R he can get.

Palin praises…Obama?
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin — occasionally mentioned as a McCain vice presidential prospect — has put out a press release praising Obama’s energy plan.
Alaska energy politics seem to trump national politics here, though it’s also interesting to see a red(dish) state Republican so willing to associate herself with the Democratic nominee.
“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Palin says in the release. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”
More:
Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.
“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.”
Hard to know what to make of the Stevens shout-out, but Alaska politics are another country.
Palin did question Obama’s proposal to tax oil company profits.
WELL JIM M, I’LL HAVE TO LET YOU GET ON WITH BEING PW’ED. I HAVE TO GO GET MY UNQUALIFIED BLACK CHICAGO THUG HUSBAND ELECTED. IN OTHER WORDS CALL THE KETTLE BLACK TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT. AND YOU PEOPLE WONDER WHY WE END UP WITH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES LIKE MCCAIN AND OBAMA. MAVYWIFE IS THE ONLY ONE WITH A SET, AND WHILE I THINK SHE SHOULD READ MY WORDS WITHOUT THE CHIP, AFTER ALL I HAVEN’T CALLED HER ANY NAMES, TO THE REST OF YOU PANTY WEARING PROFFESSORS, CHAPPY IS LOOKING FOR A DATE.
This is great news!
I’m quite aware of what I wrote, so your sarcasm is misplaced.
What?
Don’t forget he convinced Russia to withdraw troops from Georgia.
Let the negative MSM spin begin !
lol, suz…
Wow…Wikipedia is fast!
Meet Sarah Palin
The Democrats:
We’re gonna bring change to Washington, so we pick Washington ol’ timer Biden for VP.
The Republicans have Palin for VP? But-but-but, she isn’t from Washington. In fact, recently, she was the mayor of a small town. She is clearly out of touch with Washington… er, uh, whoops. She is obviously not connected with small town America… uh, nevermind, that won’t work either.
Oh well, there is always 2012.
/end Democrat talking points
Palinssiah? Sounds like a dinosaur.
By any analysis, Palin is far more qualified and capable than either Biden or Obama. Obama: nothing. Biden: 30+ years of nothing. I bet she can out-debate both those numbskulls as well. Hillary and MO must be doing their best Exorcist impressions about now.
Romney would make a good vice-president but for the election would he bring the team any states? He is a good man but as with McCain he does not excite. Hopefully Governor Palin does.
At this stage of the election it is all about perception. Actually I was hoping the McCain Team would choose me but as we are both from Arizona it is not to be. Again.

Just another bitter American clinging to my God and guns (gas guzzling, global warming pick-up truck too!)
Cheapseat is really Al Gore, I know it…
hey cheapseat:obama, has never lived up to his talent on any ‘job’ that he has had. he has never had an executive experience making decisions. he doesn’t even qualify for office manager. he did nothing of substance during his two and a half years at the law firm, he did not accomplish anything as a community organizer, he did not accomplish anything as a state senator and now as a us senator he has spent his whole time running for POTUS. the only thing he has proven is that he can get a job and start working on getting the next job, but as far as accomplishments… not so much.
McCain and Palin!
Absolutely, the smartest move possible by McCain and his campaign team. Obama’s team is sweating right now, for sure.
Palin/Jindal ticket in 2012!
cheapseat, don’t be hating…
But it does show his total lack of depth.
I like her already.
For the first time since McCain was the GOP nominee I am excited.
This is a big deal and will give the GOP momentum.
Yahoo! McCain picked a conservative pro-life WOMAN.
Chappy has way more class than you have and a beer and a ball game wouldnt be out of the question, you on the other hand need a mental facility.

Dude, drink a glass of water or, whatever you do to calm down.
Being a governor of the largest territorial State in our Union is hardly a “total lack of qualification.”
More importantly, and more ironically, this election cycle proves Sarah Palin would have two more years of executive experience than any of the other names on both sides of the aisle (McCain, Obama and Biden.)
Also, it would be interesting to see how an “old boy” like Biden would conduct a debate with a woman who has more executive experience then he does.
Also, Palin’s unassailable love for and commitment to human life (even human life defined by Down Syndrome) vs. Obama’s 2003 vote down of a Illinois bill that would have protected babies with Down Syndrome from being left in soiled waste closets to die of starvation and neglect.
The weak case against Palin doesn’t even compare to the facts coming out about Obama and Ayres. Bring it on.
MSM spin: This is an obvious attempt to inject race into the campaign since Alaska has very few black citizens.
travlinman
You can speak your mind up here. People are civil to each other.
This stay at home non-feminist mommy is crying with joy over this pick!!!
They have to be completely horrifed.. This move is going to cause them to have to COMPLETELY revamp their whole campaign strategy.. They dissed Hillary, & now moderate females are going to be inclined to put a woman in the White House..
THAT was already a problem for Obama when he started.. Now it’s a catastrophy for him..
Ho can Wikipedia make no mention of her abuse of power scandal? Weird.
Well, at least there’s a GOP ticket that has its head on straight when it comes to gay discrimination. Hail Congress! The FMA is dead!
YES!!!!! McCain finally gets my donation today. I’m so happy! And I absolutely can’t wait to see Sarah Barracuda (that’s her high school nickname) rip Biden to shreds in debates! Fun stuff!
I’m happy with his pick! I really am.
This is going to be fun.
McCain/Palin vs Obama/Biden
Good vs Evil
Finally, something funny! I’ll take that as a compliment.
My collie says:
excellent observation!
Beautifully stated, BrianNY.
That’s my thought too – and that’s not to take anything away from the great choice that Sarah Palin is as VP. The more I’ve heard and read about her, the more I like her.
ROFL! Good thing I wasn’t drinking coffee at the time, you’d owe me a new monitor!
Dan Lee – I have to disagree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the situation.
I don’t recall when the McCain campaign ever “dissed” (can we all agree to stop using this “word”) Hillary and Palin is going to be the final push that brings those fence-sitting “McCain Democrats” (i.e. those that still believe in Hillary) over to the Republican ticket.
COUNTRY FIRST!
McCain / Palin 08′
Happy Dance!
Happy to see this pick. At least it shows McCain has an interest in winning.
The dems will fire hard about the “heartbeat from the presidency” with this choice…
…I’m sure Hillary’s thinking right now, “well, at least I was already Vice President” har har.
IF McCain picks Palin as Veep, it’s a swift kick in the nads to the Barry and Joe show. There are so many women that have been alienated by Barry’s snub of the Hillery, that this would be the ideal way for McCain to get these voters to look/vote for him. Plus – the pro-life vote…her youngest son has Downs Syndrome, and she could have aborted him after she and her husband found out that he was going to be born with it, but they decided not to.
You don’t think that will win some votes for a McCain/Palin ticket? I will have my vote!
I am THRILLED!!!!!!!!!
Here’s to you Demoncraps!!!!!
Up YOURS! hahahahahahaha
GAME ON.
Two years of what, Rusty? Unlike Palin, neither Obama nor Biden have any executive experience.
You have to also remember that being a lifelong politician isn’t always a plus with the voting public. Ross Perot took a huge chunk of votes away from Geo Bush I, as far as I know he had little if any gov’t experience.
But I don’t think the Obama campaign will wanna take the “she’s not experienced” route, what with Obama being such a lightweight that “community activist” is needed to pad his one-page resume. That’s something you’d put on a list of accomplishments if you were running for your local library board.
PLYMOUTH ACCLAIM, GO TO ANY PRISON, BLACKS COME IN AS BAPTISTS AND GO OUT AS MUSLIMS. GO TO ANY BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD IN ANY CITY IN AMERICA AND YOU WILL FIND ONLY THREE RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS, BAPTIST CHURCHES, BLACK MUSLIM TEMPLES, AND DECAYING CATHOLIC CHURCHES. IF MY HYPERBOLE DISTRESSES YOU SO, LEAVE THAT LILLY WHITE NEW ENGLAND NEIGHBORHOOD AND VENTURE TO ANYWHERE IN AMERICA WITH A STREET NAMED DR MARTIN LUTHER KING DR. GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND START DOING A MAN ON THE STREET INTERVIEW TO SEE WHAT RELIGION THE RESIDENTS PROFESS.
At least there is 1 out of 4 that I truely can support!
To cheapseat:
As I tell my younger brother, when profanities, slurs, epithets and ad hominem attacks begin, thinking ends.
…And McCain’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect! Obama bin Biden’s balloon has been effectively deflated. (BTW, has Denver been left completely trashed by the eco-conscious?)
Ha! just showed on fox Palin in Iraq workin an m-16…
The Demos will need a stack of DEPENDS to get through this day!!!!

What an NBC tool.
This bit of news has really made my day today too! I have to agree with you sambo on being able to support at least 1 of the 4.
Somebody get this clown cheapseat outa here. geeze enough already.
Well, Palin is an excellent choice… if nothing else than to make me rethink about not voting “R”.
I like Palin, but I REALLY dislike McCain and his anti-conservative policies!
This knocks the Obama coronation off the front page.
Waiting for the MSM to spin this their way.
Lots and lots of excitement I am reading from anti-McCain folks who now will vote!!!
So he’s grown a brain at last. Let’s see if he retains his sense through the rest of the campaign.
McCAIN PALIN makes me feel a bit better about pulling that lever.
Beats the tar out of OBAMA BInlaDEN
Interesting move. This race has gotten very complex.
Are some of you folks suggesting that disgruntled Hillary voters with switch, just to get a woman in the White House? Wouldn’t that be shallow and sexist?
Anyway, I did not see this coming, and have no idea how it will play out. The lack of experience could backfire, but if she has leadership and vision it could balance out.
The VP debates should be very interesting too. Joe Biden is a rabid pitbull in debates, but how will that play if he’s going after a woman. That may not sound PC, but I refuse to ignore the psychological qualities of issues like this. I gotta give McCain credit for a bold choice. He’s laying all of his chips down. We likely are scrambling and regrouping on the Left. I do believe the debates will decide this election.
He could have done worse. Going for the disgruntled Hillary voters, going for the gun guys, that anti-abortion crowd and those that want a “Country’s First ______ President/Vice President”
And she is pretty hot too.
This is going to stuff The Golden Calf and anything he has to say today onto page 26.
O.K. I’m willing to give the benefit of my doubts and just wait and see. I have been concerned about her lack of experience, but she has so many things going for her…and the other choices were so predictible and, frankly, boring. This will breathe new life into his campaign and give us a better shot at the win.
