Bobby Jindal is on the ball

Pay close attention to how GOP Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is working ’round the clock to prepare his state for Hurricane Gustav. As the nutroots wish ill on conservatives and pray to God for our demise, Gov. Jindal is on the ball, working feverishly to ensure the safety and comfort of his residents. No Blanco-like whining or finger-pointing. Action, not talk. I pointed to his 4am coastline evacuation order this morning. He held a press conference with DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff this afternoon, after he visited Lakefront Airport earlier today to thank the National Guard for their support in evacuating medical patients out of South Louisiana. He also signed a memorandum of understanding between Louisiana and Missouri and Tennessee for the use of their National Guard forces assisting evacuation and response operations; coordinated special needs shelters with several other states; and worked with seven states and the feds to stage evacation support, utility workers, and search and rescue teams.
This is how to be prepared:
· The state has 700 buses contracted – these are all within a 500-mile radius.
· These 700 buses will accommodate 35,000 people.
· These buses will be supplemented by an air and rail evacuation plan, which is led by FEMA.
· The state has up to 10,000 spaces for Critical Special Needs evacuees – these are individuals that have no transportation of their own. These shelters are state run.
· Additionally, the American Red Cross, in conjunction with local parishes, have spaces available for up to 68,000 evacuees in parish locations throughout the state.
· The state has 564,000 MREs pre-positioned in Louisiana.
· The state already has 525,000 liters of water pre-positioned in Louisiana.
· The state is ready to provide food and water to 350,000 responders and folks who remain in the state because they cannot evacuate
· FEMA has contracts in place for additional supplies, and they are currently working to load up these supplies and move them to Louisiana.

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal met with the unified command of the emergency operation center at GOSHEP to receive an update on the state’s preparedness efforts surrounding the possible impact of Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana.
The Governor’s briefing from the National Weather Service reported that the center of the storm was broken up and has re-strengthened as it is approaching Jamaica. Currently, it is projected to be in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and move toward the Louisiana coast on Tuesday morning.
Governor Jindal said, “At this point, projections show that we could see tropical storm force winds along our coast as early as late Sunday night. This could potentially affect anywhere from New Orleans to Lake Charles, depending on the direction of the storm. Plaquemines and Iberia Parishes have already declared an emergency in their parishes, and other parishes are expected to declare emergencies today and tomorrow.”
The Governor added that 150 of the 700 buses on contract for an evacuation are arriving in the state today, and the state has requested federal help to assist in standing up the newly constructed shelter in Alexandria. Governor Jindal also ordered the Louisiana National Guard to be ready to deploy more than 1,500 guardsmen to New Orleans as early as tomorrow to assist in securing the city as citizens begin to evacuate their homes, should an evacuation be triggered.
Additionally, the Guard has requested possible aircraft assistance from Oklahoma (1), Colorado (4), Illinois (8), Nebraska (5), Pennsylvania (1), Ohio (1), Maryland (1), and Kentucky (5). The Louisiana Guard already has satellite equipment positioned in Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Saint Bernard, and Orleans Parishes to assist in first responder communications on the ground. Additional satellite equipment will be positioned in Southeast and Central Louisiana today.
The US Army Corps of Engineers was a part of the emergency operation center briefing today, and they reported that they are working to monitor levees and canals in coastal Louisiana. The Corps will ride out the storm in Louisiana and will then fly with the Coast Guard to assess levee conditions after the storm passes.
The Governor also announced today that the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) is beginning to get twice-daily updates from nursing homes and hospitals to ensure they are on track to evacuate patients in need of assistance. DHH is executing their contracts today for ambulance assistance, and they will be receiving 150 additional, requested ambulances from FEMA to assist in the evacuation of patients from nursing homes and hospitals. DHH will have mandatory evacuations of hospitals and nursing homes if the storm reaches a Category 3.
The Governor added that the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is stopping their road construction projects today, in preparation for a possible evacuation. Due to the updated projections of the storm, the Governor updated the timeline of possible state events to include the beginning of phased parish evacuations as early as Saturday.
Also on Saturday, critical needs and medical needs shelters are set to open, including the PMAC at LSU. Pet shelters would also open on Saturday and some hospital and nursing home patients would begin to be evacuated. On Sunday, contra-flow could be activated to assist in evacuation efforts. The state has requested four urban search and rescue teams from the federal government, along with a command center, and their arrival is expected this weekend. This is only a possible timeline of events to prepare citizens, and will be updated as the storm continues to move.
DSS UPDATE on Shelter Locations: People who are evacuating on their own and who do not have an alternative shelter should stop at shelter-information points along the evacuation route to get the most up-to-date information about which shelters are open.
The shelter-information points (also listed on the Louisiana evacuation guides) are located at:
· Tourist Welcome Center, U.S. 65 & 84, 1401 Carter St., Vidalia.
· Tourist Welcome Center, 836 I-20 West, Tallulah.
· Paragon Casino, 711 Paragon Place, Marksville
· Sammy’s Truck Stop, I-49, Exit 53, 3601 La. 115 West, Bunkie.
· Med Express Office, 7525 U.S. 71, Alexandria.
· LSU-Shreveport, P.E. Gym, One University Place, Shreveport.
· Pickering High School, 180 Lebleu Road, Leesville.
· Mowad Civic Center, Fifth Avenue and 10th Street, one block off U.S. 165, Oakdale.DSS also will assist with the registration of New Orleans area evacuees who require city and/or state assistance in evacuation at the Union Pacific Terminal in New Orleans.
DHH UPDATE on Special Medical Needs Shelters: Five locations are preparing to open as Special Medical Needs Shelters, located in Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Monroe, Bossier, and Hammond. Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport is being prepared for Critical Transportation Needs populations and for pets, should this population be asked to evacuate.
Agriculture and Forestry UPDATE on pet evacuations: A pet evacuation center for residents with critical transportation needs will be open in Shreveport in accordance with the timeline set by the local parish OEP officials. It is only for evacuees with critical transportation needs, and those residents are instructed to coordinate with their local OEP offices to arrange transportation for themselves and their pets to the shelter. Pets under 15 pounds that are carried in a pet carrier will be allowed to travel with their owners on the bus transports (soft-sided carriers are preferred). Larger pets will be placed in size-appropriate pet carriers and bussed separately from their owners to the pet/owner shelter. Other shelters for self-evacuators for pets and owners will open as storm and evacuation conditions dictate. Pets must have proper identification – preferably something permanent like a microchip or tattoo. Dogs and cats need to have proof of annual rabies and other vaccinations. It’s also very important to have collars, leashes, harnesses and kennels for confining animals when necessary. Muzzles may be appropriate for animals that are apprehensive in unfamiliar settings. Pet owners should bring at least a three-day supply of food, water and medications for their animals.

You have a very valid point. Are we going to have to continually pay to evacuate, house, feed and then re-build for people who live below sea-level? If I live in a flood plain and do not purchase flood insurance, I am screwed. We have probably already spent enough to move a large portion of the NOLA’s populace. Where will this end?
Speaking only for me: This is not a federal government function (at least as I read the constitution) – so NEITHER.
Trav and Rus,
thankyou! this is NOT what conservatism is about. okay sure lets do it now and end it off season.

After the incompetence and corruption that resulted in lives lost and property destroyed during the Katrina mess, the next most disturbing aspect of that event was the general acquiescence in the accompanying gun-grab.
The hesitance of the NRA and others to speak out against that gross violation of the people’s constitutional rights was shameful. The Heller decision should prevent a recurrence, but it is tough to defend your family and your property with a Supreme Court decision.
In a disaster like this, folks need real implements of self-defense, not the prospect of a successful lawsuit.
Tomorrows Headlines:
The evacuation was a disaster. Most of the evacuees that left by car were white and the majority of the evacuees moved out on busses were black. The Meals Ready To Eat did not take into account people who did not want to eat preserved food. The carbon footprint was huge — all the fuel burned by the cars and busses, the paper products, the plastics, etc. Instructions passed out to evacuees were not on 100% recycled paper. There were no special busses for trans-gender evacuees. Bush is an idiot. He wanted black people to die, Jindal is his lap dog, and Nagin saved the day.
Blah, blah, blah …
and Nagin saved
the dayhis new suits. If there are major problems today It will be our Michelle’s fault.
Obama: Let’s hope lessons from Katrina were learned. Guess that’s the best he can do from afar. He did call Jindal, FEMA, and Nagin. I am sure they were thrilled.
Biden: “It looks like they’re incredibly well prepared, much better than they had before.” Uh, yes, look at who is governor now: Bobby Jindal (R).
Firstly, nobody should be living there behind levees on land below sea level…unless they do it on their own dime at their own risk.
Secondly, people have survived living in the region for hundreds of years with no government evacuations. Is this some kind of new stealth entitlement? Hey, I want evacuated too! Can I have a few thousand bucks, food stamps, and one of Warren Buffets trailers too?
No, Nagin was busy getting Jidal’s boot from out of his backside. School Bus Nagin owes Bobby BIG for making him look not so much like the tool that he is. And gee Nagin is such a tough talker. “You looters are gonna be in trouble when…I mean…if you loot”. Sheesh! Just shoot the thiving bastages.
That would be “thieving”.
It is great to see what a real leader can do at the state level when given ample warning of a coming disaster. Hopefully former Governor Blanco is actually learning something by watching the proactive actions of the sitting Governor Jindal. I’m sure the inept mayor of the Chocolate City has been told to sit down, shut up, and follow orders to evacuate those that obviously (from observations made during Katrina) can’t or don’t know how to help themselves.
Just remember to not put put Governor Jindal on too high a pedestal. The higher up you put the man the easier it is for his enemies to see any small flaw and throw him down.

At the time of Hurricane Katrina, the federal government could not come in for disaster relief unless the state asked for such assistance–as President Bush publicly told her and everyone else, but the usual suspects wanted to blame the administration. Thanks to Gov. Blanco’s failure to act and failure to ask, that law has been changed so that the feds can come in without being asked if they can see the need.

I don’t know about at the time, as I was out of the country, but afterwards the NRA spearheaded efforts to change the laws so that local authorities could no longer do that. New Orleans and Mayor Nagin fought that new law and all related lawsuits tooth and nail, and were adjudged in contempt of court more than once.
So TMoney resurfaces to spew ill will towards the people of the Gulf Coast. TMoney, the one who called for the destruction of New Orleans and death to its citizens on this very site.
On March 8th, 2008 at 9:05 am, TMoney said:
Katrina, you B****, come back and finish the job for which my car is warming the globe! A category 8 should do it.
I dontated money and clothes to NOLA after Katrina hit; now I’m ashamed that I did, but at least I have room in my closet for a new gun safe.
Yeah, I know they only go up to 5, but I want the job done).
For all those outraged by the Moore and Fowler comments on the Dems gloat and guffaw thread, where’s the outrage towards TMoney comments? Is it OK when conservative wish parts of America destroyed?
Puhleease! First of all you can’t be serious. Anyone reading this blog for any length of time will see that we (conservatives) detest any ill will toward anybody. And we will call you on it. Not like your Kossack brothers and sisters who only back off the vitrol because it makes them look stupid. They just don’t stop soon enough.
Second, TMoney doesn’t have a constituancy of Americans. He/she/it is a single voice that has a somewhat skewed opinion. Fortunately that is not a crime yet just a sad commentary on a single individual. Contrast that to Fowler who is accountable to the people he purports to represent. I refuse to believe that his “people” believe much of what he said and call his stinking self on the carpet.
Third, Moore who? If you mean that fat, unkempt, assbag who is noted for his propensity for being untruthful and uncouth he only matters because people like you worship his work. Like sheep to the slaughter.
Kevin K …
You are correct … that was a part of an 1878 law regarding “Posse Comitatus” which was designed to prevent the federal government from arbitrarily sending federal troops into the states without a request for assistance from the state government …
Unfortunately when the state officials are assinine idiots that refuse to ask for assistance things like Katrina happen …
Nagin and Blanco were the main problem during Katrina … not that FEMA was totally without blame … but as evidenced by the “timely” evacuation this time around the busses got used instead of sitting with a lame excuse of having no drivers … as if none of the people wanting to get out would have been capable of driving a bus … a direct result of an idiot mayor and governor having a turf war over control instead of saving the people …
Good one. Also, instructions were not printed in all the 142 languages people in NO speak. People’s civil rights were trampled upon by this mandatory order. Their lost incomes were not fully compensated. Entertainment of the quality in NO was not provided in their evacuation zone. And so on..
I am another Massachussetts Conservative so you are not the last one.
you can blame President Bush and FEMA all you want, but the fact still remains that Blanco did nothing but go on TV and cry and Nagin did nothing but blame the feds for not doing his job. I think they should have been the Democratic ticket instead of Obama/Biden. The results would be the same.
The real fault of the fiasco during Katrina was two fold.
The initial problem of not being prepared and setting up its citizens for disaster (like having them go to the Superdome where there was nothing – still not sure how there wasn’t a charge of manslaughter for Nagin). The state of Louisiana and the city of NO, bastions of socialist utopia at its finest, had no ability or compassion to deal with such a problem.
However, the second such problem was not really FEMA as much as it was the Bush administration and their inability to turn the tables and reverse the liberal tide of bailing everyone out in times of ignorance. I am not saying that the federal gov’t should not have moved in to save those that needed to be saved. Instead, I am saying that the “saving” extended well beyond the typical definition of it, and with every extension of the term, it grows and grows.
It is the gov’ts responsibility to protect its citizens, not to bail them out in times of need. That should fall upon the fellow citizens of the city, county and country, which happened as well, but not in its entirety.
Bush failed to uphold conservative values and especially his own “compassionate” conservatism. He allowed FEMA to be thrown under the bus and he allowed the government to appear to be the bad guy, not because they didn’t respond, but because they supposedly did not respond fast enough. Instead of stepping forward and emphasizing the fact it is not the federal gov’ts responsibility to do so in these matters and eloquently expressing how it should be done and by whom, he instead promises it will be better, recognizes mistakes and missteps and in essence sets the gov’t up to be an even larger part (and thus more of our own tax dollars) in both the efforts to restore “the city under water” and in the efforts to expend even more money during the next disaster.
When does the gov’t ever do LESS the next time? Never, it is always attempting to outdo what it did last, plus then that president can boast that they spent the most money in disaster relief ever. And we are supposed to be happy with that?
No, the media won in Katrina and when that happens, everyone else loses and the fight for personal liberty took the heaviest losses.
Faux News Alert from the AJ Network …
Appoximately 15% of the people in N.O. did not evacuate … La Raza is upset as it appears the majority remaining behind were non-English-speaking and undocumented … La raza claims none of the radio-tv broadcasts or newspapers gave the warning orders in Spanish … they also said that the immigrant community had been informed that the Bus drivers were actually ICE agents and by getting on the busses they would be extradited back to _______ (fill in the blank with your favorite country of illegal origination) …

Jindal is on the ball,
No stuck on stupid here.
He is just doing the right thing.
We need more politicians like Jindal and less like Obama.
Sarah Palin is one of those who do the right thing not the self-aggrandizing thing.
Obama Sputters, Gustav Maxes, Palin Building
Jindal is everything Blanco was not. The media has made Gustav a referendum on the Bush Administration, but Jindal clearly has shown how to handle a crisis. If Blanco wouldn’t have been so inept, things would have gone much better. Not waiting for the MSM to talk about that…
No way will the MSM ever get anything that Bush did right.
They will bash him to their graves.
Jindal will help to redeem the Republican Party along with the likes of Sarah Palin.
Obama Sputters, Gustav Maxes, Palin Building
Glad to meet you MDT. I thought I was alone. I wonder if Michelle Malkin will let me change my name to Next To Last Massachusetts Conservative.
News Alert:
Obama monitors storm from Chicago.
MDT and Last Mass – if you include my wife (who lives at another blog) this would make four. Nice to have you here.
BSR
I smell a Palin/Jindal ticket in the future.
Can’t we awwwwwwl just get along? How about a compromise: TMoney wishes for the destruction of just one square meter of American soil…and les promises to stand in the middle of that square.
Win-win!
And now the left, having blamed W for the aftermath of Katrina, and now having seen New Orleans well prepared for and unscathed by Gustav, will demonstrate the apex of intellectual dishonesty as they deny the Army Corps of Engineers, the Republican Governor Jindal and the President their due share of the praise for a job well done.
It is sick to think that many on the left were hoping for catastrophe in order to both upset the convention and damage the right.
The very definition of malice.
Thank God for grown-ups like Jindal.
AMEN. Our state IS in good hands.
We spent the last week cleaning up trees off our boat and truck and spoiled food in our freezer but I am so very thankful that my family is all accounted for and safe.
