Bobby Jindal is on the ball
Pay close attention to how GOP Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is working ’round the clock to prepare his state for Hurricane Gustav. As the nutroots wish ill on conservatives and pray to God for our demise, Gov. Jindal is on the ball, working feverishly to ensure the safety and comfort of his residents. No Blanco-like whining or finger-pointing. Action, not talk. I pointed to his 4am coastline evacuation order this morning. He held a press conference with DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff this afternoon, after he visited Lakefront Airport earlier today to thank the National Guard for their support in evacuating medical patients out of South Louisiana. He also signed a memorandum of understanding between Louisiana and Missouri and Tennessee for the use of their National Guard forces assisting evacuation and response operations; coordinated special needs shelters with several other states; and worked with seven states and the feds to stage evacation support, utility workers, and search and rescue teams.
This is how to be prepared:
· The state has 700 buses contracted – these are all within a 500-mile radius.
· These 700 buses will accommodate 35,000 people.
· These buses will be supplemented by an air and rail evacuation plan, which is led by FEMA.
· The state has up to 10,000 spaces for Critical Special Needs evacuees – these are individuals that have no transportation of their own. These shelters are state run.
· Additionally, the American Red Cross, in conjunction with local parishes, have spaces available for up to 68,000 evacuees in parish locations throughout the state.
· The state has 564,000 MREs pre-positioned in Louisiana.
· The state already has 525,000 liters of water pre-positioned in Louisiana.
· The state is ready to provide food and water to 350,000 responders and folks who remain in the state because they cannot evacuate
· FEMA has contracts in place for additional supplies, and they are currently working to load up these supplies and move them to Louisiana.

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal met with the unified command of the emergency operation center at GOSHEP to receive an update on the state’s preparedness efforts surrounding the possible impact of Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana.
The Governor’s briefing from the National Weather Service reported that the center of the storm was broken up and has re-strengthened as it is approaching Jamaica. Currently, it is projected to be in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and move toward the Louisiana coast on Tuesday morning.
Governor Jindal said, “At this point, projections show that we could see tropical storm force winds along our coast as early as late Sunday night. This could potentially affect anywhere from New Orleans to Lake Charles, depending on the direction of the storm. Plaquemines and Iberia Parishes have already declared an emergency in their parishes, and other parishes are expected to declare emergencies today and tomorrow.”
The Governor added that 150 of the 700 buses on contract for an evacuation are arriving in the state today, and the state has requested federal help to assist in standing up the newly constructed shelter in Alexandria. Governor Jindal also ordered the Louisiana National Guard to be ready to deploy more than 1,500 guardsmen to New Orleans as early as tomorrow to assist in securing the city as citizens begin to evacuate their homes, should an evacuation be triggered.
Additionally, the Guard has requested possible aircraft assistance from Oklahoma (1), Colorado (4), Illinois (8), Nebraska (5), Pennsylvania (1), Ohio (1), Maryland (1), and Kentucky (5). The Louisiana Guard already has satellite equipment positioned in Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Saint Bernard, and Orleans Parishes to assist in first responder communications on the ground. Additional satellite equipment will be positioned in Southeast and Central Louisiana today.
The US Army Corps of Engineers was a part of the emergency operation center briefing today, and they reported that they are working to monitor levees and canals in coastal Louisiana. The Corps will ride out the storm in Louisiana and will then fly with the Coast Guard to assess levee conditions after the storm passes.
The Governor also announced today that the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) is beginning to get twice-daily updates from nursing homes and hospitals to ensure they are on track to evacuate patients in need of assistance. DHH is executing their contracts today for ambulance assistance, and they will be receiving 150 additional, requested ambulances from FEMA to assist in the evacuation of patients from nursing homes and hospitals. DHH will have mandatory evacuations of hospitals and nursing homes if the storm reaches a Category 3.
The Governor added that the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is stopping their road construction projects today, in preparation for a possible evacuation. Due to the updated projections of the storm, the Governor updated the timeline of possible state events to include the beginning of phased parish evacuations as early as Saturday.
Also on Saturday, critical needs and medical needs shelters are set to open, including the PMAC at LSU. Pet shelters would also open on Saturday and some hospital and nursing home patients would begin to be evacuated. On Sunday, contra-flow could be activated to assist in evacuation efforts. The state has requested four urban search and rescue teams from the federal government, along with a command center, and their arrival is expected this weekend. This is only a possible timeline of events to prepare citizens, and will be updated as the storm continues to move.
DSS UPDATE on Shelter Locations: People who are evacuating on their own and who do not have an alternative shelter should stop at shelter-information points along the evacuation route to get the most up-to-date information about which shelters are open.
The shelter-information points (also listed on the Louisiana evacuation guides) are located at:
· Tourist Welcome Center, U.S. 65 & 84, 1401 Carter St., Vidalia.
· Tourist Welcome Center, 836 I-20 West, Tallulah.
· Paragon Casino, 711 Paragon Place, Marksville
· Sammy’s Truck Stop, I-49, Exit 53, 3601 La. 115 West, Bunkie.
· Med Express Office, 7525 U.S. 71, Alexandria.
· LSU-Shreveport, P.E. Gym, One University Place, Shreveport.
· Pickering High School, 180 Lebleu Road, Leesville.
· Mowad Civic Center, Fifth Avenue and 10th Street, one block off U.S. 165, Oakdale.DSS also will assist with the registration of New Orleans area evacuees who require city and/or state assistance in evacuation at the Union Pacific Terminal in New Orleans.
DHH UPDATE on Special Medical Needs Shelters: Five locations are preparing to open as Special Medical Needs Shelters, located in Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Monroe, Bossier, and Hammond. Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport is being prepared for Critical Transportation Needs populations and for pets, should this population be asked to evacuate.
Agriculture and Forestry UPDATE on pet evacuations: A pet evacuation center for residents with critical transportation needs will be open in Shreveport in accordance with the timeline set by the local parish OEP officials. It is only for evacuees with critical transportation needs, and those residents are instructed to coordinate with their local OEP offices to arrange transportation for themselves and their pets to the shelter. Pets under 15 pounds that are carried in a pet carrier will be allowed to travel with their owners on the bus transports (soft-sided carriers are preferred). Larger pets will be placed in size-appropriate pet carriers and bussed separately from their owners to the pet/owner shelter. Other shelters for self-evacuators for pets and owners will open as storm and evacuation conditions dictate. Pets must have proper identification – preferably something permanent like a microchip or tattoo. Dogs and cats need to have proof of annual rabies and other vaccinations. It’s also very important to have collars, leashes, harnesses and kennels for confining animals when necessary. Muzzles may be appropriate for animals that are apprehensive in unfamiliar settings. Pet owners should bring at least a three-day supply of food, water and medications for their animals.

So, in essence – “we’ll wait until after the disaster and come up with…something, maybe.” Some preparation from The One, there. I feel safer already. Is this his National Security plan too (we’ll stay away from all that “preparation” stuff, and come in to lay blame for not being prepared”)?

As a professional engineer and part of the FEMA network for NY State , I wish I was working for Jindal right now.

Revisit the time line regarding response to Katrina by Blanco’s administration and that of the Jindal administration today.
If you can sift beyond all of Blanco’s finger pointing, her administration appears to have been criminally negligent at most…woefully incompetent in the least, and the MSM was as eagerly negligent in their biased coverage.
I disagree. Nagin and his staff are being investigated for using city credit cards for personal use and that I’m afraid is only the tip of the iceberg.

Ever since I’ve learned about him, I’ve been very impressed with Jindal, and have no doubt that he will someday be in the running for president.
He has certainly done a great job, as MM has said.
The damaging effects of this event may still be occuring thru Thursday – after all the flooding rains have ended.
One emergency worker being interviewed said – “we are much better prepared – but for something like this -you can never be prepared enough.”
They just said they expect at least a 38 billion dollar property loss with this storm.

I saw a Jindal press conference at about 7 EST. He seemed extraordinarily well prepared. Competence in action is a beautiful thing to see.
I envision comparable competence with McCain-Palin (or as much as possible given Pelosi and Reid), but I see more Keystone Kops with Obama-Biden. Both are such f***-ups.
Neither was governor of LA. This governor is doing his job. The previous governor was not.
But since ignorant lefties never take responsibility, I’m sure it is acceptable for leftists to continue to lay all blame on the feds, not the mayor of NO or the governor of LA.

I was talking about Blanco/Nagin. Bush tried to offer help and advised evac before Katrina hit, and the dastardly duo basically told him non-so-nicely to “shove off”. Then after the devastation, the finger pointing ran amok.

Lets look go back 3 years and look at this from the liberal’s method: Hate Bush – so can’t work with FEMA; stall evacuation to maximize daily graft; embezzled funds at risk of exposure – so don’t evacuate nursing home patients; nepotism in place – Billy Bob chickened out and left so no one to coordinate bus evacuation of the poor; criminal negligence – money for the levee improvement spent on strippers and booze; begin coverup – start with blame Bush; falsify murder and mayhem reports to delay rescue crews so as to prolong people’s suffering for great TV; arrest some volunteer out of state doctors and nurses and charge them with murdering critically ill patients – so no volunteers will ever come again – the folks need to understand salvation only comes from their ward chairman.

Are the feds supposed to take care of all of us all the time? If even the local officials were unprepared for the severity of the damage, how could strangers far away make it all better?
Kathleen Blanco went on Fox News with Geraldo and said the only reason it was going so well was because of all the work she did after Katrina! What a witch!
Jindal also ran on a reform platform, like Sarah Palin. We need reform in the GOP and in D.C., and I have hopes for this now with their appearance.
I have to thank John McCain for listening to us and choosing Sarah Palin. I hope he will continue to listen, regarding the building of The Fence. (I’ve decided to start capitalizing it)

Some people say that Jindal will be the next Reagan and I think they are wrong. I think he will be even greater!
I remember watching the news coverage 3 years ago when Katrina was cruising through the Gulf of Mexico. The news was reporting how FEMA was moving supplies into Birmingham, Jackson and other cities. There was reporting that LA and NOLA were behind in executing the evacuation orders and the Feds were trying to get them to move.
If I remember correctly Nagin waited until about 48 hours before the storm to hit before he signed the order. Based on the Posse Comitatus Act the Feds can’t do anything before the local authorities give them permission.
Not that “Brownie” was on the ball either. But the MSM ignored Nagin’s and Blanco’s incompetance and everything was Bush’s fault.

What happened three years ago in New Orleans was a major embarrassment to the the United States. Bush and the federal government received most of the blame.
But is was the failure of the liberal mayor of New Orleans and a Democrat state governor who were responsible for this disaster. They were incompetent.
But the biggest reason for this disaster was the lack of personal responsibility. The R word, a politically incorrect word. Personal responsibility would destroy the Democrat party and probably socialism, Marxism through out the world.
New Orleans has a very large population who are dependent on the government. A population dependent on welfare and public assistance. Welfare is a opiate. Welfare and poverty are very addicting. And once addicted to this social drug, they are dependent of the pusher man, the government. And once dependent on the government, and that government fails or is not around to regulate the addicts, chaos happens, anarchy. Looting, rapes, arson, murder and according to CNN, cannibalism.
Those who don’t practice personal responsibility are doomed on depending on the government. And when that government isn’t around to tell you how to survive, what to do, to feed and shelter you and how to protect your self and your property, $#!t hits the fan just like what happened three years ago.
Another example was the Los Angeles riots during 1992. The police were no where to be found. The businesses that weren’t looted or burned were the businesses who’s owners defended their property and life’s with guns. Those business owners who weren’t armed lost their business or life’s.
But on the first day of the month, the day the welfare check were to be delivered, peace and calm spread out all across Los Angeles County.
Senators like Kennedy, Boxer, Obama and people in the House like Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Shelia Jackson Lee are just drug dealers who deal in social addicting life styles, addiction to the government.
I just heard Gov Jindal asked for 16,000 more national guard. I hope some of those guard can teach the method of using the water with the MRE heater packs so the users of the MREs have hot meals. A bunch of folks at the Superdome during Katrina couldn’t read directions and figure that out.

Sounds like Jindal has already done more than Nagin and Blanco combined and the hurricane hasn’t even arrived yet. I hope for the best down in Louisiana.
Jindal has fixed everything. He has evacuated every living thing south of Arkansas, personally prepared gazillions of MRE pound cakes, lowered the wind speeds of Gustav 300 mph, and will soon redirect the storm towards Iran via N. Korea, and all with only ten months of “executive experience”. Still McCain picked Sarah because with her 20 months of “executive experience” she stops tropical hurricanes from coming anywhere near Alaska……….
I saw a few clips of Ray Nagin in TV today. He was talking about how it is much better this time because if what they learned from Katrina.
Apparently Blanco/Nagin just thought the issue would solve it self the first time, then when it didn’t they blamed everyone else. Now we see leadership and as a rust of the leadership people are leaving the city before the storm, instead of shoving them the Super Dome after the fact.
How much press coverage of the handling of Gustov do you think will be credited to Jindal, McCain and Palin?

Obambi will show up long after the show (along with sean penn in his rowboat) and they’ll get all the coverage.

All due respect to Gov. Jindal, it would be really, really hard to blow it as bad as Katrina. Certainly, lessons must have been learned by everyone down there.

Should Blanco and Nagin been more prepared, of course. But the scale of the flooding was beyond the capabilities of the local or state government. And you ask how could strangers far away make it better, I’ll let Henry J. “Junior” Rodriguez Jr., St. Bernard Paris President at the time of Katrina answer that question for you:
“You want to talk about the cavalry riding to the rescue, the Canadian Mounties got here the second day, the feds, we didn’t see those [S.O.B.S]… until the fifth or sixth day.”

What makes Jindal remarkable is he’s a man of integrity in the most corrupt state in the union.
I’m not trying to make excuses for the Bush admin here, but I believe they did all they technically could at the time before Katrina. Blanco did tell him to keep his hands out of it.

What this shows is that Jindal is prepared, and will not hesitate to do what he thinks is necessary…no matter what color his constituents are. I recall a lot of claims of racism during Katrina, mostly directed at Bush.
…while Nagin and Blanco cowered or pointed fingers.
Another huge difference that many people continue to forget, or choose to forget, is that Jindal appears to have requested federal assistance in advance of the storm.
Many ignore or forget the fact that Blanco did not issue any such request admitting she didn’t want the feds (and Bush) telling her what to do. It didn’t take her long to change, and actually request help. By that time, most of the left were busy telling lies anyway, and pointing fingers at Bush.
This finger-pointing was happening BEFORE the request for federals assistance, and a day or two after the White House made it very clear that Blanco was required to request assistance, she finally did.
Gov. Jindal barely stopped to take a breath during his press conference! He put out a lot of information in a short period of time. (And he did it, I think, without even one “uhhh….”)
He’s going to make an amazing president one day.

But the point of your initial comments distinctly sounded as though the feds should have been able to magically forsee all the damage and been ready before the first raindrop fell. That is not a fair criticism.
It seems several other commenters here have beat me to the punch and reminded us all that the governor didn’t want the feds in it before the flooding.
My humble opinion: you’re just looking for one more thing to gripe about Booosh about.
Again, Blanco was REQUIRED to request federal assistance PRIOR TO the feds showing up, and she pooched it badly.
I’m not saying the feds actions were stellar throughout, but we are seeing now how much better reactions can be when the request is prior to the storm, and a hell of a lot of pre-positioning/evacuation can be done.
Upon completing his time as governor, Gov. Jindal will make a fine Presidential candidate in 2012. This is a guy who’s resume isn’t just a regurgitation of his past and present job descriptions. He’s completed his time with distinction, excellence, and sound principle. This is the sort of man for whom I’d vote. Godspeed, Governor.
These libs want the govt to take over health care, but love to complain about Katrina. Do you really think they’re (govt) going to ever be that efficient and are you prepared to possibly stake your life on it?

Don’t be silly. If Algore was President, Katrina wouldn’t have formed in the first place because he would have outlawed global warming. I fully expect to hear that the Chosen One will make a stand on an oil rig in the Gulf and order Gustav to get lost. He has that power, you know. He IS the Messiah, after all.
Right, Katrina wouldn’t have happened if Algore was Prez, cuz he would’ve signed the Kyoto Protocol and there would be no more storms.

The more I read about Gov. Jindal, the more I’m in sheer awe. He’s got the mind, the character, the experience, the leadership credentials, and the intestinal fortitude to get the job done. I can only hope that he runs for President in 2012.

I have two relatives who traveled to NO for post-Katrina clean-up, one delivering FEMA trailers and supplies to “residents.”
They contributed their time and efforts and experienced the attitudes firsthand. Not that some people weren’t grateful but the vast majority were simply waiting for others do give them them everything without their doing much of anything.

I listened to an interview Geraldo did last night with Kathleen Blanco the former Governor (I’m remaining restrained and polite to only refer to her as that). The entire conversation was laced with “…before I left office, I did this….and that, et al”. She made it sound as though the preparedness they are seeing now, is ALL her doing.
It was frankly very difficult to listen to, and I dont’ normally watch Geraldo but CNN only had Rick Sanchez on so it was a toss up.
I watched Gov. Jindal’s news conferences. The one held last evening was text-book leadership. This guy is double tough. Bright, decisive, forceful, in charge. And the look on Nagin’s face and the tone of his voice said it all, he was a bystander.
Well done Gov. Jindal. May God Bless you and all in harms way.
I’m on the Jindal and Palin bandwagon in any order at the moment. Add Steele to the mix and I’m a pretty happy camper, indeed. Those wastes of skin and air, Nagin and Blanco, can now – opps, forgot Geraldo – can now sit back and watch what leaders do in times of trouble. The lead, not whine and point fingers. I submit that they are “stuck on stupid.”
Now, as a perreniel wet blanket, let me ask what good it 525,000 liters of water? If one person neeeds a gallon of water each day for necessities – I know we can all do with less, but for the argument I’ll use the standard requirement – and a quarter-million folks are sucking on the teat, that comes up short. They mention 350,000 responders and people who can’t get out?
Looks to me that the reports are using liters to make it sound better. Pretty much the same with the MRE’s. I’m convinced the area is better off this time, but I have these dark glasses on.
On the conspiratorial side of the equation…it’s fun to make them up. That’s why I write.
Perhaps all the money that was geared for the recovery of Katrina and Rita never got spent because – TaDAAAA – the Democrats planned this storm to coincide with the convention in Minnesota.

Jindal has been great in his preparations. He is worried about his entire state and not just the Chocolate City like Blanco and Nagin. At least they won’t let 700 school buses get flooded this time and maybe they won’t try to confiscate everyone’s guns used for protection.

Why do taxpayers have to rent 700 buses
to evacuate people 3 short years after katrina, pay for their housing and to feed them and pay for their return?

Bobby Jindal is a conservative of the Reagan mold and will probably be President of the USA in the near future. He is what we need to restore the ‘core conservatism’ so many of us crave in our country’s leadership.
As to comments about how Jindal spoke clearly and concisely without all of the irritating, “uhhhhhhhs”, and without use of a teleprompter, it is proof of one of 2 things: he is either a natural-born public speaker or he knows he is telling the truth each time he speaks and therefore does not need to worry anout getting caught pandering (lying). It could be some of both. He was obviously well prepared and knew his message. Did anyone happen to watch the Saddleback foruma couple of weeks ago? It was so obvious that McCain could answer quickly and succinctly, because he has a core and a moral base to operate from. His message is pretty consistant, even if we do not like some of his views. Obama has to hem and haw, because he must be sure he is regurgitating the positions that his handlers told him the polls supported at that point in time. It is so clear who has the best interests of this country at heart and who is only seeking power for the “Party” in order to further their own agenda.
