While Louisiana prepares for Hurricane Gustav, Dems gloat and guffaw; RNC opening night cancelled; Fowler apologizes; Gustav hits land

Scroll for updates…RNC opening night cancelled…McCain via Bloomberg: “We are facing a great national challenge,” McCain said in remarks sent by video from St. Louis to Republicans gathering in St. Paul, Minnesota, for the nominating convention. “We have to do away with party politics and we have to act as Americans”…Fowler apologizes…Gustav slams into La. coast…

First, please read this e-mail from michellemalkin.com reader/commenter CantCureStupid, who is a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard. She asks for your thoughts and prayers as the people of his state ready for the storm:

Hi Michelle.

I’m a new member to the site and a big fan, and right now I’m experiencing a brief (and rare) moment of downtime. I am a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and we are up to our nostrils in preparations for Hurricane Gustav. There is a lot going on right now in south Louisiana, but mostly we are watching this monster bear down on us and hoping for the best. I wanted you to know, as a soldier who also had to suffer through the cluster that was Katrina, that we are 1000% better prepared (God Bless Bobby Jindal!!), and that while hoping for the best, we are completely prepared for the worst and ready to do what needs to be done to ensure the safety of the people of this state.

I am sure, as a fan of your site, that the vast majority of your fantastic commenters are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. Most of us are very aware of how sick the rest of the nation must be to hear the namby-pamby cry baby stuff that still comes out of the New Orleans area three years after Katrina, but I would ask for prayer and support for my soldiers, who have nothing to do with politics and who show up and serve whenever called upon.

God Bless America and God Bless Louisiana!!!

New Orleans is under mandatory evacuation orders this morning. Here’s a disaster preparedness round-up from Glenn Reynolds. And Weather Nerd and hurricane blogger Brendan Loy is tracking the latest developments.

Per Gov. Bobby Jindal’s order at 4am this morning: “As directed by Governor Jindal, Louisiana State Police will initiate contraflow at 4:00 AM Sunday morning. For the first time in history, the entire Louisiana coastal population will be evacuated due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gustav.”

We know who won’t be praying for their success and safety: tolerant, peaceful liberals wishing the worst on Republicans in Gustav’s path and laughing about the possibility of grave destruction.

Exhibit A: Michael Moore (via Allah).

Exhibit B: Former DNC chair Don Fowler (via redstate diarist Absentee, who caught Fowler and Democrat Rep. John Spratt’s candid, malicious comments on a plane from Denver to Charlotte. Transcript via Ed Morrissey.

The hurricane’s going to hit New Orleans about the time they start. [Chuckle] The timing is — at least it appears now that it’ll be there Monday. That just demonstrates that God’s on our side. [Laughter] … Everything’s cool.

God is not on your side, gloating sleazeballs.

Our Louisiana Army National Guard’s screen name says it all: Can’t Cure Stupid.

So it is no surprise they are hoping and praying that many people die and that as many homes and businesses are destroyed this time around. . .then they can try to blame President Bush and “global warming.” They think it will be funny.

The MSM won’t ever report what Dems really are and always try to cover for them.

However, there are campaign commercials and footage from the one with those two Dems gloating would make a great and educational ad.

Republicans: Doing their best to evacuate the coast and make sure there is little life lost. Praying to God that life is spared.

Liberals: “Praying” that thousands die and for massive destruction, so they can bring up their religion–global warming–and use the destruction for political purposes. This is comical for them and they have no regard for human life. Life is expendible as long as it fits into their political agenda.

I had prepared myself for Michael Moore but was sandbagged when I clicked and Olberman appeared on the screen. I’ll have to write a check to a conservative cause to soothe my nerves.

Conservatives for the most part put aside politics at a time like this and ask God to look kindly on those in danger. Liberals pray for further devastation to befall those in danger so they can demagogue the issue for their own benefit. Can there be a greater contrast between the two philosophies?

This may well turn out to be a Wellstone moment for them if they keep cheering on the hurricane and gloating over the “dilemna” John McCain finds himself in.

As far as that dilemna goes, crisis often provides an opportunity for leadership qualities to come to the fore. I’m certain of which candidate that would benefit.

The operative phrase here is BELOW SEA LEVEL. They are below sea level and are trapped between the gulf and Mississippi River. The area is actually sinking and the coastal marshes are deteriorating.

No matter how big and good the levees and pumping stations are someday they will fail. The big nightmare is an early storm on the gulf and late flooding on the Mississippi. It is a case of 1+1=2 and in this particular case 2 is a terrible number.

These people are disgusting. While they like to think that Katrina exposed some sort of racial/economic divide, what it really exposed was the difference between those who do the right thing and make the right decisions (i.e. get the hell out of Dodge), and those who blame otheres for all their problems.

Certainly, Katrina was a huge natural disaster, but the blame game that followed was a perfect metaphor for the Democrat’s platform of “you cannot take care of yourself, without our help.”

I have to say this to les:
I have family in Mississippi where the Gulf Coast was reduced to slabs after Karina. Unlike many in Louisiana their friends pulled themselves up and either moved or rebuilt with the help of the US government, insurance, and grants. They did not attempt to stay in hotels in Houston at the govenment’s expense for almost two years, they did not spend the initial $2000 help in bars, on beer, or on strippers.

Katrina was not a Democrat or Republican contest, it was a contest of who had been raised on the teat of welfare, dependent on the government for generations, and who accepted the risk of living near a body of water and doing the best with what they had.

Hurricanes hit Florida almost every year. Andrew flattened Homestead and parts of South Florida and people moved on. There was the contrast, les. It is not about politics, it is about welfare and pandering to welfare for generations.
