Hi Michelle.
I’m a new member to the site and a big fan, and right now I’m experiencing a brief (and rare) moment of downtime. I am a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and we are up to our nostrils in preparations for Hurricane Gustav. There is a lot going on right now in south Louisiana, but mostly we are watching this monster bear down on us and hoping for the best. I wanted you to know, as a soldier who also had to suffer through the cluster that was Katrina, that we are 1000% better prepared (God Bless Bobby Jindal!!), and that while hoping for the best, we are completely prepared for the worst and ready to do what needs to be done to ensure the safety of the people of this state.
I am sure, as a fan of your site, that the vast majority of your fantastic commenters are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. Most of us are very aware of how sick the rest of the nation must be to hear the namby-pamby cry baby stuff that still comes out of the New Orleans area three years after Katrina, but I would ask for prayer and support for my soldiers, who have nothing to do with politics and who show up and serve whenever called upon.

New Orleans is under mandatory evacuation orders this morning. Here’s a disaster preparedness round-up from Glenn Reynolds. And Weather Nerd and hurricane blogger Brendan Loy is tracking the latest developments.
Per Gov. Bobby Jindal’s order at 4am this morning: “As directed by Governor Jindal, Louisiana State Police will initiate contraflow at 4:00 AM Sunday morning. For the first time in history, the entire Louisiana coastal population will be evacuated due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gustav.”
We know who won’t be praying for their success and safety: tolerant, peaceful liberals wishing the worst on Republicans in Gustav’s path and laughing about the possibility of grave destruction.

Nah, I still outrank you, Scrapper – I’m a pretty rank fellow, har har. One of my older bros was/is an electronics geek who assembled an Altair 8080 from a kit in the 70s and I dabbled with that guy a bit. Wasn’t much compared to the what came along in the 80s, but still cool in it’s day with it’s lights and switches.
And I know about feeding those endless lines of BASIC code into a cassette. Did it with Commodore, Radio Shack (TRS-80), Sinclair and a few others that escape memory just now. It really sharpened my algerbraic skills!
I have some of those old PCs in the storage closet. I love “old” technology and still think “Pong” is a great game.

Ray Nagin is telling people that if they don’t evacuate they are on their own. So what else is new? He left everyone on their own the last time. That’s par for the

I heard Gov. Jindal last night say he has evacuation plans set and in operation now…as Mayor (numb nut) Nagin is looking for a map, New Oreleans to Dallas, his new home after Katrina.
I hope that republicans use this video to show just what kind of slime bags now permiate the dems. What kind of sick minds are gleeful over the suffering of others simply because it may cause them to gain more power?

It’s also interesting to note so many people here, presented with the chance to appear holier-than-thou (where “thou”=”liberals”), criticizing Dems for not putting aside politics at this moment to pray for those in the path of Gustav. And yet, the number of times I’ve seen on this site a consensus among commenters about the notion that Hurricane Katrina victims were overwhelmingly criminals and drugs and garden variety ne’er do wells undeserving of pity or empathy — along with the implicit suggestion that they somehow deserved their fate — is innumerable. It’s an interesting about-face, and smacks of the same cynical political opportunism of which the Republican party is now being accused.
Absolutely. All conservatives aren’t racist, and this statement shouldn’t be twisted to suggest that the speaker means to imply so. But white supremacists, pretty much as a rule, don’t vote Democrat.
I’m sure someone here will post about how black supremacists vote for their own, with the requisite citation of the number of African-Americans giving their vote to Obama. But that’s not solely about race; if it were, Alan Keyes would have seen the same turnout. This is just STUPID! Life does not stop in the rest of America because a hurricane makes landfall somewhere! Is this to be the new “polically correct” norm from now on? All baseball, football, and other sports events, all movies, all weddings, all birthday parties are to be cancelled in Maryland because a tornado touches down in Kansas? An earthquake in California requires the cancellation of all activites in Texas out of respect for the victims?
I don’t recall baseball games being cancelled after Hurricane Andrew devastated my area of South Florida. I want compensation for the insults of the rest of the nation for not stopping their lives because we got nailed. I don’t recall basketball being cancelled for the duration after the Nortridge earthquake.

The economic hit my city (Minneapolis) is going to take is enormous! The hotels, the restaurants…! It does seem a bit crass, however, to celebrate when New Orleans and other cities are being hit so hard. I don’t know what the answer is at this point, except perhaps they could just have the convention as planned, just tone it down. We are going to take criticism no matter what we do. If we are enthusiastic about our candidates, the dark side will say we are typical republicans, no sympathy for the plight of the hurricane victims. This is a really tough call!

To look at this issue with a critical eye, just let me say that while their idiological brothers in Cuba were enduring the hardships of Hurricane Gustav, some even dying, the Democrats “partied hardy” at their convention. There, as far as I am aware, was NO mention of postponing their event.
While it is true that the Cuban’s are not US citizens, we DO have a military base there, there are currently WOT prisoners held there, and since Obamatron claims to be a citizen of the world, where was his concern for his idiological brethren, and the military personnel he desires to command?
Ex-expat…I would LOVE to see that ad! It would be a really good one. But I agree, it won’t be run. And why? Because they would fear the accusation that McCain is using the disaster for political gain. It is sad that we can’t tell it like it is these days.

Changing the subject slightly to the actual topic of the videos, I can’t see how this hurts the Republicans. All levels of government get a chance to redeem their showing from Katrina (thank God for Bobby Jindal) and it gives McCain a chance to act presidential, which plays to people of thought far better than Obama acting like a Greco-Roman rockstar in his convention.
I’m a firm believer in substance outweighing style, and despite the MSM’s best efforts, this could play out showing the true difference between the two candidates. Now all McCain has to do is handle it right….this is his chance to win the election.

As a Louisiana resident who’s pretty much glued to the tv and internet for the next 24 hours watching the doom and gloom inch forward, I don’t have a problem with people celebrating and looking ahead to the future. Right now my focus is on the hurricane because it impacts me and my friends and family directly. But I realize that life goes on for everyone else and we need people who will continue to celebrate all the good that goes on in spite of others’ tragedy. It gives people like me hope that even when things are tough, they won’t always be that way.
There’s plenty of people who are focused on Louisiana right now, those who don’t have a direct personal interest in the situation need to focus their energies on other aspects of our country’s future. We know you’re thinking about us, now go on and make sure there’s something else out there to continue to give us hope and a positive outlook.

I know we are blasting Fowler for his remark. However, I am actually seeing his side of this a bit. First of all, it was a private conversation. Secondly, he was taking a jab at Jerry Falwell’s statement that Katrina was a punishment from God..or was it some other disaster…I don’t remember! Anyway, if he said it in that context, I can see that he was trying to be funny, even though he wasn’t! Never thought I would defend a crazy liberal, but trying to be “fair and balanced”. On the other hand, there is no excuse for Oberdope and Moosey Moore saying what they did. They are both beyond contempt.

CNN’s Rick Sanchez is such a tool. Calling on Bob barr to admit that McCain was a fool not to ask Jindal to be his VP (Jindal refused early on). He goes on to ask “Why didn’t the Fed govt fix all the levies?” What an idiot this guy is. How cynical and partisan is it for CNN to use Bob Barr as a foil to criticize the RNC during this unfolding tragedy? And the left goes hysterical because Fox news even exists. True character is revealed in a crisis or when a person thinks no one else is around to hold them accountable. Fowler, the DNC and a number of left wing nut jobs have revealed their underbelly and it smells pretty bad. Fowler is less of a man when he has to evoke the mistake of a deceased person (who apologized) to try and mitigate his own moral corrupt failures.

Dressing for church this morning, I decided to wear the Blue Roof pin made by Lisana’s Glass House in Louisiana that the teens from our church sold as a fund raiser for one of the two summer missions trips they did in New Orleans. We all hope and pray that there will be far less need for those blue tarps this time around, but most of all, we pray that everyone is safe.

Geraldo is asking if she is bitter she was blamed for the failure of her admin during Katrina. At least she is not whining that she was blamed incorrectly. She is taking credit for fixing everything, and claiming credit for this disaster going correctly.
She is not admitting it was her fault and Mayor Nagin that caused the problems, but at least she is not as whiney as Geraldo.
That was about as much an apology as Dana Jacobson gave for her F Jesus comment.
