Bristol Palin chooses life. Now leave her alone.

The Palin family values the sanctity of life. They talk the talk and walk the walk. It is driving the Left absolutely insane beyond the farthest reaches of unhingedness. Now comes the news that 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant. “News” that wouldn’t be news but for the nutroots P.D.S. conspiracy theories that won’t die.
The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
The official family statement on the McCain website:
“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”
What will the bottom-feeders do next? Investigate their dating history? Hound them during their pre-natal visits a la Alan Colmes?

“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.
One ticket sees this as a blessing. The other sees it as a curse. Could the core differences between the two be any starker?

She’ll be able to address it with empathy instead of the pseudo-sympathy the left is famous for.
Teen pregnancies are not ideal, but hello, this has been happening forever. You love, you make mistakes, you see the blessing for what it is and decide to not only make the best of it but live a joyful and successful life anyway. Welcome to normal human existence.
The only way Sarah Palin would have been found lacking integrity is if she had thrown her daughter out of the house or urged her to run out for an abortion.
As it stands, Mrs. Palin is still on the right side of the issues. She still gets my vote. Let the haters on the left embarrass themselves with their comments…it’s what they do best!

I thought Barry Obama’s daddy had several wives at the same time. Maybe we should have that come up in a national debate since families are apparently fair game.
Good on Palin’s kid. She’s young, but she’s responsible. And I hate to break it to those in big cities, but lots of women are preggers by 17. Especially in smaller towns. It certainly doesn’t make them anything but real young mothers.

Do you understand the words in the headline here? “Bristol Palin chooses life.” That’s pretty key. She wasn’t forced to do anything. She chose to have a baby. It’s her decision and an example of how important choice is.
The whole story is a non-starter to me. Who cares? The only part I’m uncomfortable with is the shotgun marriage. The divorce rates for young married couples is staggering.
And, just so it’s on the record, more lies from Atheling.
Teen pregnancy just recently went up for the first time since the 1990s. And the increase was statistically insignificant. It was newsworthy since teen pregnancy has been decreasing steadily since the late-80s. In fact, one year ago, teen pregnancy was at the lowest rate since they started keeping track of these things in the 1950s. Comprehensive sex education and condom availability can be linked to this decrease.
It’s none of my business, but I doubt that two teenagers were looking to conceive. This is probably a happy accident. A happy accident that could have been prevented if someone had a condom.
Bristol Palin is lucky to be in a loving family of means. Most aren’t so fortunate.
Mark my words, this will not become an abortion debate. It will become a debate about sex education.

Good point. Kids make choices that are contrary to what their parents taught them. Parents cannot be held responsible because kids are allowed to make choices on their own.
Also have an example: My friend from high school addicted to meth and coke and a few other substance despite being raised by a wonderful Christian couple. Now he’s got Hepatitis. Anyone want to blame his Mom and Dad for it?

He joined the Navy and they were both 2000 miles from home so they couldn’t run home to their mommies and daddies. That was in 1960 and last weekend they went camping together in the mts. Sometimes it does work out.

All I’m talking about is parents (mostly) and schools (in a very specific and pretty limited way) advising kids NOT to have sex, but if they do make that mistake, then also telling them that they better damn well use a raincoat.

Learning from those mistakes and facing that adversity are how we grow that humanity as individuals …
Responsibility for actions rather than excuses and claims of victimization are the true reflection of one’s upbringing and values …
Doing the right thing to be true to one’s self and beliefs rather than the expediently easy thing that goes against those beliefs takes courage and conviction …
Bristol and Levi have made those decisions and need to be respected for making those decisions for themselves …

Living in a county where every elected official is a Democrat, almost every poster to local blogs is a Democrat, and having children out of wedlock is the norm (the schools all have daycare centers), it will be interesting to see what kind of garbage this produces from those local bloggers.

With all due respect, were you ever 17? “Should have” takes a back seat to, well, the back seat. Hormones generally do a fine job as overpowering the centers of logic and reason in a 17 year old’s brain.
Is a teen pregnancy responsible? No. But it is how one handles the situation that allows them to do something responsible about it.
The liberal left mocks the concept of a marriage in this situation, and instead condones eliminating the “problem”. While they argue for a woman’s right to choose, the choice in question does not include choosing to have the child.
The left cannot fathom the concept of strong family values. Strong family values centered around personal responsibility. They cannot understand the concept that unplanned does not mean unwanted. To them, unplanned means an interruption in one’s own lifestyle that should not be tolerated. And they will never understand the concept that taking responsibility for one’s actions in a devoutely Christian family means accepting the lot life has cast through marriage.
If most of us look back on our teens in an objective manner, we would be shocked that we survived those years.
It is no news flash that a teenager got pregnant. And it should not be newsworthy.

A lot of people think that Barack Obama got the Democratic presidential nomination primarily because he is black. Rush Limbaugh even said that this was affirmative action run amok. Does the same argument apply here with Palin? Is she really the most qualified person to be on the presidential ticket with McCain? If I were one of the vastly more qualified men in the Republican party, I would be questioning why I was passed over. With regard to the daughter: this brings back memories of how the right wing attack machine accused McCain of fathering an illegal black child in the primaries during the 2000 election.

My point was simply that IMHO, abstinence only sex ed is ineffective for many of the reasons that have been stated in this thread (ironically by folks who probably advocate the same). What this young girl was taught by mom and dad (yes, I’m making an assumption based on Palin’s stated views on the topic) DID NOT work.
Smart of the McCain/Palin campaign to announce this today. (Hurricane Gustav) The news will barely appear on network and cable tv. This will be treated with kid-gloves. I agree with Palin’s statement that their daughter will need lots of support from their family. Teen pregnancy is the fast track to adulthood and incredibly life-changing.
My god, can’t you people leave these two kids alone? They made a (very common) mistake and they are dealing with it as adults. This is a family problem which should be totally off limits to both nutty bloggers and the MSM. To bad that in this case the leftwing nuts won’t leave it alone.

Mpchops and all: as teens my wife and I were in the same situation as Bristol and her young man. We got married, kept that child and all subsequent. Sure we made a mistake and God and our family never stopped loving us. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary this year and have 4 grandchildren. Unconditional love still exists and flows from God to all who will receive. Instead of judging her, pray for her and the tough challenges they will be working through.

The issue was not raised as a matter of “moral equivalency”. No one is trying to justify the situation by pointing to a similar situation. The issue was raised to show the hypocrisy of the left. It would be very difficult to substantiate a claim of hyposrisy without mentioning the equivalent scenario that formed the basis for that claim.

It’s pretty obvious that what mom and dad taught her didn’t work. But that doesn’t mean other methods are better. I teach high school, and I’ve had several girls who ended up pregnant who were using some sort of preventative measure.
Besides, there were plenty of things my parents taught me that I didn’t do. That doesn’t make them wrong.

If anything this could be an argument about the culture war. The left is all for spitting out P Diddy and Britney and exposing teens to all sorts of counter culture crap.
This shows that even in the best of families having to compete with the crap hollywood and the media throw out everyday is a challenge. And that more of the same with just passing out condoms isnt the answer.
Politics is very dirty and nothing is off the table. I’m disappointed with this revelation, but it is just as important as how the family dealt with it which speaks to the creditability of the Palins. I encourage the Palins and all of us supporters to take what the left dishes out and remain standing and move forward to victory.

Actually I’m pretty pleased with our ticket. It made it three days without melting down. As for Governor Palin, I’m not suggesting women belong in the home (I actually voted for Hillary), just that — in purely political terms — she has gone from gimmick to distraction and that, given the circumstances, she might want to put everything on hold until she gets a chance to run for Stevens’ seat in a couple of years (against the Dem or after he steps down).
I don’t find the Folsom Street crowd particularly offensive, just boring, though they seem to have your number, which is what they want. Do you have kids? You do realize that everything they do is as calculated as your six-year-old pushing your nine-year-old’s buttons on a car trip. Your outrage is their reward. Just ignore them.
Nor are my sensibilities offended by the pregnancy.
What is offensive is the preening moral superiority Republicans bring to politics. That our ideas of sex education encourage teen sex and so on. I’m hoping we can observe a cease-fire in this regard, and that Dobson can finally be muzzled.

This doesn’t have anything to do with the the people involved in the election. This young woman is not running for office. I think her privacy has been invaded more then enough. Candidates do not deserve to have their children, any of their children made part of the campaign.
The Kos wouldn’t know what is in good or in bad taste, if it bit them on their “collectivist” bums.

Purdue and Troll, not saying that this one example makes this argument. The irony of the situation in light of Palin’s stated views on the subject is pretty striking, however, you must admit. Here’s what I’m saying should be taught to kids (and what we’ve told our teenagers in no uncertain terms): DO NOT have sex, but if you make a bad choice and ignore that edict, DO NOT compound your mistake by not using birth control. Kids obviously many times choose to ignore the second edict as well and make the mistake anyway, but when utilized correctly birth control works and teen pregnancy rates go down.
Like virtually the entire black population of the country? I though libs approved of that sort of thing. At any rate, according to the statement, she’s marrying the father. I know that’s the part you really disapprove of.
