Some history for Puff Daddy

By see-dubya  •  September 1, 2008 07:53 AM

Sean “Diddy” Combs isn’t too impressed with John McCain’s choice of running mate, and accuses McCain of “bugging the f— out!” As for Alaska, he wonders whether there are even any black people in the state.

Well, Diddy, there are:

A black woman was a member of the party that founded Eagle City, Alaska, in 1897, and a black man was one of the first inhabitants of Valdez. Blacks were living in Alaska as early as the mid-1800s, but it was the military and the gold rushes of the late 1800s and the early 1900s that brought the largest numbers. When the gold rushes ended, there were about 209 black people living in Alaska. Then the construction of the Alaskan Highway in 1942 brought in a large number of black families, mainly due to the fact that black infantry units played a big role in the development of the highway. By 1960 the black population was at 6,711. In the ’70s the oil boom and the construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline increased the state’s population among all races, including blacks. The 1990 census recorded more than 22,451 blacks in Alaska.

A new tour company in Fairbanks is about to market the Last Frontier to African Americans. Starting in June, Alaska Ebony Tours will give a statewide tour of five Alaskan communities: Anchorage, Seward, Denali National Park, Fairbanks (whose mayor is black) and a native Alaskan Village. In addition to exploring the natural wonders of the state, the tour will focus on the history of African Americans in Alaska and the role that they have played in the state’s development.

“I think there have been some misconceptions among African Americans in the rest of the U.S. on what Alaska is really about,” says Grady O’Bryant, an eight-year resident of the state and the president of Alaska Ebony Tours. “I want to show them what a beautiful state it is in terms of natural wonders and the friendliness of the people, and why my family and I chose to make our home here.”

Knowing that, I’m sure that “Diddy” will want to reconsider his opposition to Palin.

I live in Minneapolis. I don’t have any boots on the ground in St. Paul, which is just across the Missisippi River, about 10 minutes away. However, I do know there was an arrest of a bunch of people calling themselves the “welcoming committee”. They had guns, bombs and bottles of urine. Sorry. I like Palin, a lot, and I say that as one of the 10% who was familiar with her before the nod. But she’s not actually running for a position of power. McCain is just using her as a trojan horse.

The race isn’t Palin / Obama. I wish with all my heart that it was. It’s pro-amnesty Juan McCain vs pro-amnesty Obama.

Sean “Diddy” Combs complained about the “… too high” price of gas and pleaded for free oil from his “Saudi Arabia brothers and sisters” in a YouTube video posted Wednesday.

The hip-hop mogul said he is now flying on commercial airlines instead of in private jets, which Combs said had previously cost him $200,000 and up for a roundtrip between New York and Los Angeles.

“I’m actually flying commercial,” Diddy said before walking onto an airplane, sitting in a first-class seat and flashing his boarding pass to the camera. “That’s how high gas prices are. I’m at the gate right now. This is really happening, proof gas prices are too high. Tell whoever the next president is we need to bring gas prices down.”
