Gustav update: The clean-up begins
Our michellemalkin.com commenter CantCureStupid, who is a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, wrote me last night with a Hurricane Gustav update:
I just wanted to give you a quick update (from my cell phone, in fact) before I catch a couple of winks.
We lost power in my area at about noon, and we’ll be lucky to get it back in the next 24 to 48 hours. Winds were strong enough to uproot a massive oak tree behind our armory (which is about 60 miles NW of New Orleans… not exactly a coastal parish). Soldiers and families are safe, but at least two of my troops suffered catastrophic tree damage to their homes while they were on duty. My house got a little banged up as well, but my husband assures me that it can be easily repaired, thank God.
There are National Guard soldiers and airmen all over the state helping to get things ready so that people can get back home and assess any damages, which we all hope are minimal. We are also beyond grateful that New Orleans seems to have come out of this in much better shape than anticipated.
Thanks to you and all of your wonderful commenters for the prayers and well wishes. I would only ask that you not forget us just yet, as the clean-up is just beginning.
With deepest respect and warmest regards,
CantCureStupidP.S. Michael Moore and Don Fowler can truly kiss my a$$.
Har. Gov. Bobby Jindal has posted the following message on his site:
Message from the Governor Today, we stand together as the impact of Hurricane Gustav continues to be felt throughout our state. We are thankful that most residents heeded the warning to evacuate before the storm. Local, state, and federal officials are working closely together and are fully prepared to deal with the critical issues that face our state in the coming days and weeks.
We have been through trying times before, and now we will endure them once again. We are a resilient state, and always have been. My prayers go out to the families of those affected by Gustav. We will work together to recover from this latest storm, and show the world once again what makes Louisiana great. Thank you for all the support that has already been shown by the rest of the nation and the world, and ask for your continued support as we work to recover from Hurricane Gustav. Louisiana is home to some of the most unique places and people in the world, and there is nothing that a storm can do to take that away.

Glad to hear you and your family are doing well, CantCureStupid. I’m also glad to hear your house is still intact. Lots of people weren’t as lucky. Hope you’re back posting soon. We’ll miss your comments. Stay safe and God bless.
What a difference an (R) makes! Good job, Bobby!
Some people may ding me for this but I thought there was a lot of whoop-dee-do over Gustav with trains, planes, national guard & even postponing part of the convention in MN, yet how much aid was there for the people of Iowa with their recent disaster? I guess they muddled through on their own somehow.
The best part about Gustav was that it wasn’t as brutal as anticipated.
Another “best in show” was Germaldo making a complete a$$ of himself on live T.V. “Look Martha! there’s more!” pointing to white caps on water. not to mention the GD part and telling someone to shut up…..
lol, what a dipstick.
aj, I wanted Geraldo to dive into the canal himself. That bit was hysterical and they still don’t admit that, uh, it was planned by the Coast Guard. Geraldo always provides comic relief in a hurricane.
All the best down there, CantCureStupid.
This also applies to all Louisianans.
What? No $2000 debit cards hurricane victims can use on strip clubs and beer?
Damn you Republicans.
Any time Mother Nature unleashes her fury, there is only so much we can do. But when the people on location are prepared and lead the right way, the situation will no doubt be better than if that leadership was not there.
Bobby Jindal led properly. And Ray Nagen had no choice but to improve on what was essentially negligence and ignorance leading up to Katrina. The Federal Gov’t did better, but it has to start locally. And it did this time. They got people out, as CantCureStupid pointed out. (Thank you by the way… [salute]!!!!)
I won’t be holding my breath waiting for liberals or ANYONE in the lib media to praise President Bush’s handling of this.
And yes… Michael Moore had his idiocy on display for the world to see… with his “there is a God” statement about a hurricane hitting La. What an ignorant moron. I hadn’t realized just how stupid the man wa until now. He must be SPECTACULARLY dumb.
Here’s hoping the people in the stricken area are safe.
I don’t recall Hurricane Dolly blogged about here. Please stop trying to turn this natural disaster into a propaganda point.
God be with you, CantCureStupid.
Lindsay,
I’m surprised he didn’t act like he was going to actually “rescue” or attempt to save his life somehow instead of screaming at the camera man to get the poor sap drowning.
I hope he studied the tape and uses it as “real men” 101 instead of going back to the pansie he is.
You mean like the Katrina debacle?
nj-aviator,
don’t leave out Olberduffus, he was right there lapping up Moorons every word.
Piano Man
Game set match.
lmao, I can’t believe he said that, gimmie a break. The use of Katrina is in the every speech.
I hope Michael Moore sees that there really is a God in heaven…and not for the reasons he claims, but because God heard the prayers of His people and spared them.
God be with all of the Gulf Coast residents who will return soon to their homes!
I am so happy about this guy and Sarah Palin. McCain has brought dynamism to the party and a look to the future by picking Palin and Bobby Jindal’s star is beginning to shine very bright indeed. Now let’s find one or two more like these guys and really grow our country to even greater greatness! I say to hell with turning down the thermostats and bicycling to work. Lets leave a better world for our kids & grandkids!!
I had a nice talk to a FEMA worker here in Iowa. The entire town of Cedar Rapids ended up under water. The water was up to the second story downtown. This flood was 12 feet higher than the “500 year flood”, some 15 years earlier. Yet there were no fatalities and no casualties.
The difference between Cedar Rapids and New Orleans during Katrina is that the people got out of town. They also started cleaning things up immediately.
Thanks to a new attitude by the local politicians and citizens of New Orleans, they also got out of town. I think Jindal deserves a lot of praise, but I think Nagel does to. He was a different mayor this storm.
Also New Orleans dodged a bullet. After 3 years the levees are still not strong enough for a direct hit by a cat 3 hurricane. Hopefully none will come along.
Now we must prepare for Hanna which could hit Charleston the end of the week.
Great job, Gov. Jindal (R)!
What a difference … Good thing Louisiana tossed the last Gov under the bus.
Watched a lot of coverage yesterday… Never saw a more DISAPPOINTED bunch of MSM weatherman wannabes… Truly dejected and down in the mouth, because GUSTAV was not the KILLER they all hoped for… Well, MSM, we still have HANNA, and now IKE to hope for…
Amen, CantCureStupid! Amen.
Good point. I forgot about his remark right before Fat, Dumb and Happy started to speak. I can’t remember it precisely but it was something like..
“…and with the Federal Gov’t trying to pretend they’re on top of this…”
Olberman is also a poster child for stupidity.
We can’t help it. It’s our Inner Kos showing through. Ow-oooooo!
Speaking of your Inner Kos, a little Metamucil will help you get rid of it.
Maybe someone can help. I am sick with worry. I’ve searched the web and newscasts for word of Sean Penn and his row boat. However, I have found no reports anywhere.
Surely he is out there somewhere making his contribution to the Gustav mission. I can’t believe he would sit this one out.
Lord I pray he and his row boat hasn’t been blown out to sea. But if he has, I pray he has Michael Moore, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and a whole mob of Hollywood celebrities with him, and that their towing Osama Bin Laden through the waves on a rope behind them.
Jindal is speaking now, he’s a natural born leader…. unlike the Dem candidate he’s actually done /is doing something in a perfect mold of quailities this Country needs, NOT just hopey changey.
I hope things work out for the best for you there, CCS. Kudos to you and to everyone else in LA working hard to bring things back to normal, especially those who are taking care of others in the midst of dealing with their own problems. Stay safe.
Geraldo diving, driving or jumping into the canal $1.29. Geraldo staying in the canal -bottom of- Priceless. Not that we do not love Dear Geraldo, absolutely not.
With good people such as CantCureStupid, Governor Jindal and thousands of others we see how these things should be handled. They even managed to drag Mayor Negative Nagin out of his hidy hole. Were they able to secure Wal-Mart and the liquor stores from the Nwlans Police?

Hey Obama-What to see Bitter?
Look at your wife.
WE SHOULD BE CIVIL-WE CONSERVATIVES?
Not a chance.
Bill O. tried to get a field report from Geraldo but there was no sound with it. I sent Bill an email telling him Geraldo sounds better when his microphone isn’t working.
I just think it was rather patheticly funny to watch Obama jumping up & down like a kid who was to short to see the show over all the adults throughout the storm..
It was like he wasn’t even here for most of it.. Too funny..
My Speech! What about my speech!!?
CNN did throw him a little bone though. They did the usual: Ask softball questions & don’t challenge any of his “ludicris” answers..
Yes. I agree.. and his style of speaking is becoming nauseating… I’d describe it like this…
“I’ll speak slowly and calmly.. so you get the impression that I actually know what I’m talking about.. despite the fact that I’m either reading from a script someone else wrote.. or I’m making this up as I go along… giving the the illusion of competence.”
Yes.. illusion of competence as Olberman puts it.
Gotta love that Gov. Jindal, all our best to our troops helping out.
Geraldo was his classic idiot self as usual. Fox has joined the ranks of tabloid BS, if not for sports, I’d dump my TV’s. CCS thanks for the update and stay safe.
If I had to watch one more network lead the news with the non-starter storm from N.O. I would vomit…that stupid Harry Smith pretending to be blown down the street. Get OFF my TV.
So, get to the RNC & the anarchists causing trouble outside…Bobby Jindal has gotten it all under control.
DieHippieDie; does the laxative work for over-exposure to networks’ circle orgasms over the tropical storm too?
Yesterday I saw O’bama on tv and listened to his advice on how to help the victims of Gustav: “send $15 to the Red Cross and pray”. What a stroke of genuis. Is this the way that O’bama plans to solve all of our problems, by donations and prayer? I can see it now:
California on the verge of bankruptcy because of illegal immigration.
Solution: Send $5 and pray.
Gas prices soaring.
Solution: Send $10.95 and pray.
Iran attacks Israel.
Solution: Send $14.50 and REALLY pray.
Terrorists set off dirty bomb in New York City.
Solution: Send $20.75, pray, and move upwind.
Healthcare faltering, hospitals bankrupt and forced to close doors because of non-paying patients.
Solution: Send $50,000, pray, and repeat over and over “Be happy, our government will take care of us, be content, our government knows what is best for us”.
While significant advances have been made as a result of Katrina (biggest one possibly being the election of Bobby Jindal), the single most important reason why this storm was not the disaster that Katrina was is the fact that it was less powerful. Gustav was a cat 2 upon landfall, and it was still able to just barely overtop the levies. A category 3 or stronger storm could easily have been deja vu all over again. New Orleans is still a fundamentally flawed city that is just begging for catastrophe. I am against the federal government providing any relief to New Orleans that is not fully repaid. Basically, I refuse to subsidize the stupidity that is living several meters below sea level while surrounded by water on 3 sides in an area highly prone to severe hurricanes. If people there think that the benefits outweigh the risks, then they can cover the many tens of billions of dollars of renovations and improvements necessary to make the city safe in the event of a storm, or they can just live with the risks.
I wish you people would realize that there’s a lot more to LA than N.O. I rode out Gustav in Baton Rouge and it was NOT a pleasant experience. I was fortunately to have no damage to my townhouse and just a few downed small tree limbs and a lot of debris. Lots of people weren’t so lucky.
The power went out about 12:30 p.m. then the wind picked up and it blew and blew. When Katrina came through, we were able to go outside sometime around 5 p.m. Not so with Gustav. There was still high wind through the night. Try sleeping with your windows open (because there’s no electricity, it’s 80 degrees, give or take, and humid) with what’s left of your neighbor’s carport bucking and sounding like my carport was being torn apart.
There was no electricity in the entire parish (county to all you non-LA folks). Everything from the giant feeder lines to the local neighborhood distribution lines are damaged. No idea when we are going to have power again, although as I left town this morning, there were reports of power in a couple of areas.
I left home at 11:30 to travel west to my parents’ house so I could have power and computer access, but I traveled through very heavy rain and strong winds 24 hours after the storm came through.
Parishes more south sustained even more damage.
Please don’t think that this storm was “nothing” just because NO didn’t flood. We’re grateful that we got less rain than expected, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a lot of damage.

Aside prayers answered, let’s hope this city finally gets its act together and whip up an alternative to the absurdity of having to evacuate an entire “advanced” American city each time there’s a big wind. Time to use the lessons of more stalwart cities around the world.
