Aside prayers answered, let's hope this city finally gets its act together and whip up an alternative to the absurdity of having to evacuate an entire "advanced" American city each time there's a big wind. Time to use the lessons of more stalwart cities around the world.

I wish you people would realize that there's a lot more to LA than N.O. I rode out Gustav in Baton Rouge and it was NOT a pleasant experience. I was fortunately to have no damage to my townhouse and just a few downed small tree limbs and a lot of debris. Lots of people weren't so lucky.

The power went out about 12:30 p.m. then the wind picked up and it blew and blew. When Katrina came through, we were able to go outside sometime around 5 p.m. Not so with Gustav. There was still high wind through the night. Try sleeping with your windows open (because there's no electricity, it's 80 degrees, give or take, and humid) with what's left of your neighbor's carport bucking and sounding like my carport was being torn apart.

There was no electricity in the entire parish (county to all you non-LA folks). Everything from the giant feeder lines to the local neighborhood distribution lines are damaged. No idea when we are going to have power again, although as I left town this morning, there were reports of power in a couple of areas.

I left home at 11:30 to travel west to my parents' house so I could have power and computer access, but I traveled through very heavy rain and strong winds 24 hours after the storm came through.

Parishes more south sustained even more damage.

Please don't think that this storm was "nothing" just because NO didn't flood. We're grateful that we got less rain than expected, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't a lot of damage.

While significant advances have been made as a result of Katrina (biggest one possibly being the election of Bobby Jindal), the single most important reason why this storm was not the disaster that Katrina was is the fact that it was less powerful. Gustav was a cat 2 upon landfall, and it was still able to just barely overtop the levies. A category 3 or stronger storm could easily have been deja vu all over again. New Orleans is still a fundamentally flawed city that is just begging for catastrophe. I am against the federal government providing any relief to New Orleans that is not fully repaid. Basically, I refuse to subsidize the stupidity that is living several meters below sea level while surrounded by water on 3 sides in an area highly prone to severe hurricanes. If people there think that the benefits outweigh the risks, then they can cover the many tens of billions of dollars of renovations and improvements necessary to make the city safe in the event of a storm, or they can just live with the risks.

Yesterday I saw O'bama on tv and listened to his advice on how to help the victims of Gustav: "send $15 to the Red Cross and pray". What a stroke of genuis. Is this the way that O'bama plans to solve all of our problems, by donations and prayer? I can see it now:

California on the verge of bankruptcy because of illegal immigration.
Solution: Send $5 and pray.

Gas prices soaring.
Solution: Send $10.95 and pray.

Iran attacks Israel.
Solution: Send $14.50 and REALLY pray.

Terrorists set off dirty bomb in New York City.
Solution: Send $20.75, pray, and move upwind.

Healthcare faltering, hospitals bankrupt and forced to close doors because of non-paying patients.
Solution: Send $50,000, pray, and repeat over and over "Be happy, our government will take care of us, be content, our government knows what is best for us".

If I had to watch one more network lead the news with the non-starter storm from N.O. I would vomit...that stupid Harry Smith pretending to be blown down the street. Get OFF my TV.

So, get to the RNC & the anarchists causing trouble outside...Bobby Jindal has gotten it all under control.

DieHippieDie; does the laxative work for over-exposure to networks' circle orgasms over the tropical storm too?

Gotta love that Gov. Jindal, all our best to our troops helping out.
Geraldo was his classic idiot self as usual. Fox has joined the ranks of tabloid BS, if not for sports, I'd dump my TV's. CCS thanks for the update and stay safe.

Geraldo diving, driving or jumping into the canal $1.29. Geraldo staying in the canal -bottom of- Priceless. Not that we do not love Dear Geraldo, absolutely not.

With good people such as CantCureStupid, Governor Jindal and thousands of others we see how these things should be handled. They even managed to drag Mayor Negative Nagin out of his hidy hole. Were they able to secure Wal-Mart and the liquor stores from the Nwlans Police?

Maybe someone can help. I am sick with worry. I've searched the web and newscasts for word of Sean Penn and his row boat. However, I have found no reports anywhere.

Surely he is out there somewhere making his contribution to the Gustav mission. I can't believe he would sit this one out.

Lord I pray he and his row boat hasn't been blown out to sea. But if he has, I pray he has Michael Moore, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and a whole mob of Hollywood celebrities with him, and that their towing Osama Bin Laden through the waves on a rope behind them.
