For those of you following the Peggy Noonan drama, here’s the latest. In her latest column, she wrote of the insular “Bubbleheads” who populate Beltway punditry.
Let me say of myself and almost everyone I know in the press, all the chattering classes and political strategists and inside dopesters of the Amtrak Acela Line: We live in a bubble and have around us bubble people. We are Bubbleheads. We know this and try to compensate for it by taking road trips through the continent — we’re on one now, in Minneapolis — where we talk to normal people. But we soon forget the pithy, knowing thing the garage mechanic said in the diner, and anyway we weren’t there long enough in the continent to KNOW, to absorb. We view through a prism of hyper-sophistication, and judge by the rules of Chevy Chase and Greenwich, of Cleveland Park and McLean, of Bronxville and Manhattan.
And again we know this, we know this is our limit, our lack.
All I’ll say is this: “We” are not all like that.

Contrasting her resume with that of the Democratic presidential nominee, she says: “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago in the 1980s before attending Harvard Law School. Palin was a two-term mayor of the town of Wasilla, Alaska, a small town of about 5,000 people.
She also contrasts Republican presidential candidate John McCain with Obama.
“In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change,” she says.
…”I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone,” she says.

She accepts the nomination. More huge applause.
Palin talks about son Track headed to serve in Iraq and another family member enlisted. She introduces her daughters and baby son to the crowd. Addresses families of special needs children. “I have a message for you: I pledge to you that if we’re elected, you’ll have a friend and advocate in the White House.” Introduces Todd Palin. “Two decades and five children later, he’s still my guy.”
Introduces parents. They taught me that “This is America. Every woman can walk through every door.” Honesty, sincerity, dignity. Hard-working Americans: “They love their country in good times and bad and they are always proud of America.” Jibes the Scranton poseurs vs. the San Francisco back-biting.
Take that, Snobama.
Delivers her pit bull/hockey mom joke. The difference? Lipstick.
Palin is letting it rip. For those who don’t know what the job entails, let me explain what small-town mayor entails. “I guess it’s like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Shreds Obama’s bitter/clingy remarks.
Palin dives into substantive policy issues: ethics reform, fiscal discipline, energy policy, chief executive policy. Takes on the anti-drilling crowd. “Starting in Jan., we’re going to lay more pipelines, build nuclear plants, move forward on alternative sources. We need American sources brought to you by American ingenuity and produced by American workers.”
10:55pm Eastern. “This is a man who has authored two memoirs, but not a single legislative reform.” This is a man who never uses the word victory, except when he’s talking about his own campaign. When the cloud of rhetoric has passed…when those styrofoam Greek columns go back to some studio lot…what exactly is our opponent’s plan?”

10:59pm Eastern. Palin impales Obama on his bogus presidential seal. The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of personal discovery. Obama and Biden go on about fighting, but let’s face it: There’s only one man in this race who has ever really fought for you….where winning means survival and losing means death. This evening Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican Party’s vice presidential nominee, will address the 2008 Republican National Convention. Excerpts from the governor’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, are below.
On her experience as a public servant:
“I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
On why she is going to Washington, D.C.:
“I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. On energy policies that the McCain-Palin administration will implement:
“Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines…build more nuclear plants…create jobs with clean coal…and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.”
On John McCain:
“Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”

Not one media outlet has noted that this is the FIRST TIMEE in our country’s history that a female VP choice has spoken at the Republican convention! Not one!
Although I am a journalist by trade (for car magazines) I am ashamed and embarrassed by the Media’s treatment of this historic moment. Their bias is so completely displayed for the world to see and, for once, I hope the landslide in November goes to the Right!
They’ve got all day to do analysis. They should shut up when something is actually going on. They want us to trust their analysis when they’re not even paying attention to what’s going on?
It sounds like they borrowed Rush’s bumper music.

Awesome speech by Mit, I especially loved his dig (and twist) at the self professed anti American Michelle Obama.
I would have supported Mit Romney more except when ever I see him all I can think is “Bruce Campbell”. Not that it’s a bad thing I hope… then again seeing Fred Thompson and Joe Leiberman last night all I could think of was “Penn and Teller”.

As I started watching the convention tonight, my daughter said “I wish they would just pick the President now!”. I asked her why — she said she is tired of hearing all the talk about all the bad stuff.
She’s 8.
I asked her who she wants to see elected. She said John McCain. I asked her why. She said because — and these are her words — “Because Obama and Hillary have been … we’ve seen so much of them for so long I’m tired of them. John McCain doesn’t seem to be trying to get people to vote for him. He’s just doing his job. Obama seems to always be talking. And Hillary is … I don’t think selfish is the word. She seems to just want people to vote for her.”
Those were the views of an 8 year old.
I asked my 16 year old niece the same questions this past weekend…”Who do you want to see elected?” Her answer – “Obama”. Ok…I’m open minded and am willing to accept opinions other than my own if they are well thought out. My follow up question: “Why do you want Obama elected?” Her honest-to-God answer: “Because he has a cool name.”
Sadly, my 8-year old daughter gives more thought to the process than someone who will be voting in the next election cycle. Suffice it to say, I spent the entire weekend using “teaching moments” as to why she needs to give serious thought to the issues.
MSNBC showed Romney’s speech in whole so I’m assuming they’ll show Huck’s and Rudy’s as well.

As a resident of Dayton, OH, I was disappointed to be out of town when McCain swung through and made the stunning decision of choosing Palin. On the up side, I was in Las Vegas at the time. I’m looking forward to hearing her speak tonight, and I think she’ll be able to weather this firestorm pretty well, as ridiculous as it all is.

I’ve read Pop Mech for 40 years. Objective journalism at it’s best. How fast, how far, how new, how it works, who invented it, etc. Why slum it in the political arena where everyone has an ox to gore?

I don’t recall the extent of the allegations relating to Franken, but think they were more serious than keeping incorporation papers filed with the state. I have been a small business owner and had to deal with red tape and know how onerous it can be. As an attorney you should know that small businesses are prone to oversights on corporate documents. It is not a felony to miss filing an annual report or to be late on paying a licensing fee. One will receive notice from the state of incorporation, and then react by filing the report and paying the fee, with penalty added of course. Case closed, unless you choose to ingore the warning letter. Then your corporation could lose its ‘legal entity’ status and the resulting protections from personal liability for you as a principle. No felonies here. Give it a rest.

McCain and the GOP were very respectful of the Dems last week and the favor should be returned. What did we expect?

Chuck Knobloch’s biggest fan over at MSLSD just felt the need to point out “errors” in Huckabee’s speech. Don’t remember him doing this in Denver. He added up Biden’s primary vote total. Obviously, Huckabee meant more votes in Iowa as we had heard earlier.
Fred’s speech was not aired by the big networks.
Yes but there’s always the delicious potential of a catfight breaking out on the set and I don’t want to miss it. Plus, I find the dynamic between Rachel Maddow and Pat Buchanan fascinating.
