My syndicated column today takes a broader view of those suffering from Palin Derangement Syndrome and assesses the longtime signs and symptoms of progressive Conservative Female Abuse by the Left. There’s something about outspoken conservative women that drives the Left mad. It’s a peculiar pathology I’ve reported on for more than 15 years, both as a witness and a target. Thus, the onset of Palin Derangement Syndrome in the media, Democrat circles, and the cesspools of the blogosphere came as no surprise. They just can’t help themselves.
Liberals hold a special animus for constituencies they deem traitors. Minorities who identify as social and economic conservatives have left the plantation and sold out their people. Women who put an “R” by their name have abandoned their ovaries and betrayed their gender. As Republican officeholders and conservative public figures who are women have grown in number and visibility, the progression of Conservative Female Abuse has worsened. The astonishing vitriol and virulent hatred directed at GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the most severe manifestation to date.
The first stage of Conservative Female Abuse by the Left is infantilization. Right-wing women can’t possibly believe what they believe about the sanctity of life, self-defense, free markets, or foreign policy. They must be submissive little dolls of the White Male Hierarchy. Or, as a far Left (is there any other kind of Left in San Francisco?) San Francisco Chronicle columnist wrote of First Lady Laura Bush, they must be put in their place as “docile doormats” with no brains of their own. True to form, no sooner had John McCain announced Gov. Palin as his veep pick than jeers of “Palin = neocon puppet” sprouted across the Internet.
The second stage of CFA is sexualization. A conservative woman is not merely a sellout. She is an intellectual prostitute. Unable or unwilling to argue with them on the merits, detractors resort to mocking the physical appearance of their ideological opponents in skirts and denigrating them with vulgar epithets. MSNBC hosts insulted former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson’s accomplished wife and mother of two, Jeri Thompson, as working the stripper pole. Newspaper cartoonists Ted Rall, Pat Oliphant, and Jeff Danziger caricatured Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a mammy, thick-lipped parrot, and Bush “House Nigga” armed with “hair straightener.” New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd derided former GOP Florida secretary of state Katherine Harris for applying “her makeup with a trowel.”
True to form, Dowd was first out of the box to snicker at Gov. Palin’s beauty pageant past, ridicule her “beehive and sexy shoes,” and compare her path to the vice presidential nomination as a “hokey chick flick.” Joe Biden backhandedly praised her as “good looking.” And left-wing bloggers worked overtime on lurid photoshops of Palin as a bikini model and porn star. At the Democratic Underground, a highly trafficked liberal website raising money for Barack Obama, members held a contest to come up with nicknames and posters to slime GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — and then to “spread [them] all over the ‘net.” Among the “nicer” entries: “Cruella,” “Gidget,” “Governor Jesus Camp,” “VPILF,” “Fertilla the Huntress,” “Iditabroad,” and “KILLER PYSCHO FUNDIE BITCH FROM HELL!!”
The third stage of CFA is demonization. When the Left tires of hurling whore insults, it turns conservative women in the public eye into nefarious creatures. Bill Maher called Laura Bush “Hitler’s dog.” George Carlin attacked Barbara Bush as “the Silver douchebag.” A Huffington Post website member wrote of Nancy Reagan: “Like her evil husband, she has lived far too long. Here’s hoping the hag suffers for several weeks, then croaks in the tub.” Another added: “I feel no pity for the bitch who took delight in watching thousands die of a horrible disease and watching the poor having to eat out of dumpsters because of her husband’s political beliefs.”
True to form, rumors of Palin being a crypto-Nazi surfaced on the Internet and the fringe media. And liberal critics used her gun-rights record to smear her as bloodthirsty.
And the final stage of CFA is dehumanization. Conservative women aren’t real women according to the liberal feminist establishment’s definition. Remember when Gloria Steinem called Texas Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison a “female impersonator?” Or when curdled NOW leader Patricia Ireland instructed Democrats to vote only for “authentic” female political candidates? Or when Al Gore’s fashion consultant Naomi Wolf described the foreign-policy analysis of Jeane Kirkpatrick as being “uninflected by the experiences of the female body?”
Echoing the bottom-feeders in the liberal blogosphere, mainstream journalists and Obama water-carriers now question Palin’s commitment to motherhood and even challenged her pre-natal care decisions in an effort to destroy her. Forget about questioning their patriotism. I question their sanity.

Wow! What a powerful article, Michelle. This is a must-read for anyone voting this year. It shows what the base of the democrats is really like. They seem to run on nothing but their hatred of ideals contrary to their own and the people who stand for those ideals.
The anti-Palin frenzy on the Left is proof positive that she was a homerun pick.

As always Michelle, you have nailed this! I have become increasingly annoyed the past few days over this. Had it been contained to the nutroots, perhaps it would not have bothered me so much but bleeding over into (what laughably!) constitutes our MSM, it fills me with despair. This was a wonderful column! It’s got me so fired up this morning! People in our country have a short attention span and you have all of those wonderful links to remind everyone of the bias and hypocracy of the left. I am going to forward this to everyone I know in hopes that they can use it as a tool to combat the PDS that they might encounter every day.
Way to go Michelle! You have quantified every one of your points in a manner that my 5yr old could understand, meaning it will still be a mental stretch for any of the Kossacks or other MSM types to understand.

I was a tepid McCain supporter. Meaning I was going to vote for him, but do nothing to promote him. After Fred Thompson’s speech last night and this column this morning, I am a changed woman. I feel now we have something to vote for not just vote against. Way to rally the troops, MM.
I just forwarded this article to friends, family, etc. Even some possible Obama supporters.
McCain should have known this was coming. “Race and Gender traitors” are obviously completely unacceptable to the unhinged lunatics of the left.
Every good liberal knows that a “real” African Americans or females can only be authentic if they believe the party line. The very notion that there are conservative women and African Americans is impossible for them to accept and those who refuse to be good liberals must be destroyed.
They did it to Thomas and they will try to do it to Palin. I just hope we, as a nation, can see through their vile and obscene sexist and racist ranting.
I read on an Amazon message board that the science was in: race was a social construct. I think too, gender will become a social construction, where the women will be considered democrats, and the men republican. Because only recently have I learned that you’re only a true woman if you are Pro-choice and pro-Palestinian. Go Figure.

You’re so right, aj. I think it was Rusty who said that it was a horrible pick for McCain and we “hardcore” supporters just can’t see the writing on the wall. I think that if they were ignoring Palin, we’d have a problem. The mere fact that they are attacking her with such ferocity is a testament to your quote above. I just really feel sorry for her family, but I think they must be strong enough to deal with the lies, otherwise they wouldn’t be in politics.
The Left doesn’t really care about these issues, their hope is that they can undermine the person with the Conservative base and thereby keep/get/retain their power.
The Left is the American Taliban, enforcing rules on others they themselves will not observe. All in the name of power for themselves to create a more “perfect” society.
To paraphrase Michelle Obama; for the first time in my life I am proud of John McCain.
I was going to hold my nose and vote against Obama/Biden, but now, I’ll be at the voting booth when it opens to vote for America’s first Woman Vice President and our future first Woman President.
So the real question IS… what are we going to do?
They have had this well oiled attack machine in motion for so long.
I don’t want to be the same as them, but there has to be a way to get the message out just as clearly as they manage their lies.

Let these idiots rage. I want to see Gov. Palin pummel Greasy Joe in a debate.
I’ve found that when speaking with libs it is best to pose all speech in the interrogative. In other words, I ask questions…over and over and over again. My (prolly naive) hopes are that the person with whom I am speaking will come to an understanding when they answer the question. You know…the old light bulb moment.
However, what I am getting from reading the lib blogs, DK, and other lib media, is that they have their fingers in their collective ears, spewing spittle as they scream lalalalalalalala.
As usual, another strong, insightful column, Michelle. These people are beyond reprehensible, and in my humble opinion, the silent majority will demonstrate their displeasure with them on November 4. I think Rush had it right when he made that prediction on his show yesterday.
BTW, did anyone see Bob Beckel this morning on FOX? He actually drew a false parallel between that New Yorker cover, which was actually a slam against conservatives and their perceived views of Obama, and US Weekly’s utterly despicable Sarah Palin hit-job. It was Alan Colmes-like in its contortions.

And yes, Fred(!) did us all proud last night. I was jumping up and down and cheering as if I was at an Eagles game.
I do agree with Nina Easton on one thing, though. In spite of some differences with President Bush and as much as I loved the Reagan tribute, I would have liked to have seen some sort of tribute to W., focusing on the War on Terror. Especially in light of the awesome news regarding Anbar Province, that would’ve been an excellent chance to remind America that the man has kept us safe since 9/11. They could’ve tied that in with McCain’s call for the surge.
And another (slightly OT) thing: Mort Kondracke continues to display a complete lack of awareness regarding the Sarah Palin pick, deriding her as “far right.” Does he actually believe that the 12% of the population that call themselves “independents” would carry McCain to victory if much of the Republican base stayed home? No one challenged him on his assertion, not even Kristol, which kind of surprised me.
Mort was just so ticked off that his buddy Joe Lieberman didn’t get the VP nod. He was actually mad that the crowd gave Joe a warm reception and yet would’ve been opposed to his selection as VP. Does he not get that while conservatives admire Joe for his pro-America foreign policy stance, there is little else we agree with him on? Or that conservative audiences (unlike most liberal ones)are capable of being respectful and polite?
Regarding Maureen Dowd, Dowd is even far worse. She was posing as a political reporter for the New York Times back in 1984 when Geraldine Ferraro was nominated to VP by Mondale. At that time, Gerry was regarded as a liberal hero (That was before Obama called Gerry a racist and the
MSM went along with Obama). Dowd wrote article after article about the hypnotic effect Gerry had on the voter, how people swooned over her. The articles are all still available. She even wrote one front page article for the times with the blaring headline: “On the hustins, she’s terrific”. Dowd detailed how Gerry went to Hartford, Ct to campaign and grown men, tough working class guys, were practically swooning and fainting over Gerry. Of course, Reagan took Ct. by a landslide so that shows how “objective” Dowd was, then and now.
On the subject of Dowd, she was quitely corrected by the Times when she wrote a false story about how a Democratic congressman supposedly asked General Petraeus about why there were so few Democrats in the military. According
to Dowd, General Petraeus winked and said “There are more than you think”. However, Dowd never heard the conversation and never verified it with the General. This was worse than anything that Jason Blair ever did yet the Times would not discipline Dowd. It only issued a hidden correction. My guess is that Dowd said she would call it sexist if she was disciplined and the Times backed down.
Great job, Michelle! May the left get exposed for all that it is. GO SARAH!

I read the “article” which contained the phrase “she courted the group for years” two times. I’ve never been on that website before, but that seemed more like an OpEd than an informational piece. There’s a big difference between listening to a speaker once and being friends with a guy who blows up government buildings and belonged to a group who advocated killing parents.

This is getting to be truly nauseating. I have yet to hear anyone simply express honest disagreement with Palin– folks on the left seem not so much opposed to her policies as offended by her existence. How can you even have a serious debate on the topic?
When it comes to female abuse, the left are bereft of character and class and all that remains is a big hairy @ss.
In Howard Kurtz’s column today, he wrote about the McCain campaign’s “war against the press.” In it, he quoted Campbell Brown who browbeat Tucker Bounds on Monday on her CNN program. Brown said, “Experience is a legitimate issue when John McCain raises it about Obama, and it’s also legitimate for us to raise it about Palin.” Apparently, it does not occur to Brown or to Kurtz that it was their job to raise the issue about Senator Obama. They seem unable to see the difference between the pass they have given Senator Obama and the scourging they are giving Governor Palin. It is willful blindness.

You can’t. The left doesn’t want honest debate. They don’t want anything they believe questioned because they know they’ll lose. So, instead they attack and smear their opponents.
I watched this and wanted to jump through the screen. She did this a few days earlier to another McCain spokesman (dark-haired guy, can’t remember his name). The funny thing is that Brown called Tucker “Tucker baby” at the end of the

Wasn’t there a movie made a few years ago about a lib president filling his vacant VP post with a woman? Didn’t that movie portray the Republicans as attacking her based on her looks, fitness as a mother, sexual history, etc.

You have to sympathize with Beckel. If I had run Mondale’s 1984 campaign, I’d pay to prevent that fact from getting out.
After the 1984 election there was a distinguished conservative pundit (whose name escapes me, unfortunately) who proclaimed that Reagan’s victory was proof the MSM power was overrated and fading. A generation later I am forced to conclude the gentleman was in error.
One has to stand in awe of media power. In but a few days it can launch an appalling series of coordinated attacks, a media blitzkrieg actually, against Palin or anyone it now perceives as a threat to the One. Given its loathing of the non-left and its adoration of Obama, I wonder if the growing point spread between Obama and McCain is indeed the result of the MSM attacks. If so, this is bad news. It will take a miracle for the Republicans to win.
What’s most sickening for me is all the women I know who claim they are “liberal” yet happily jump on the bandwagon attacking Palin. When I point out that most of their attacks promote sexism (i.e., “mothers shouldn’t work”), they just respond with a “well she’s pro-life” or “well she’s a Republican” excuse.

That statement above highlights the hypocrisy of the left and the fact that their only conviction of the day is what supports their current argument.
Their mantra for years has been to diss motherhood and stay at home moms who are nothing more than slaves to their husbands and then turn around and criticize Sarah Palin for not “staying home”, raising her kids and baking apple pies but trying to do it all.

In my experience when they attack personally the are out of arguments and have lost the debate. They’re just trying to save face.
There was one member of a forum who viciously attacked Ann Coulter for her physical appearance. I told him to tell me where he differed with her on the issues and where exactly she was wrong. He never responded.
The left has lost the Palin argument and they know it.

And, speaking of the Obama: his father, his mother, his wife, his wife’s decades old college thesis and his extended family in Africa have all come under intense scrutiny. Despite a brilliant record of achievement, he’s been painted as some kind of underserving affirmative action nbaby. Despite a rough upbrining, he’s called an elitist, as though he’s a fourth-generation millionaire like George Bush or some 7-home-owning Arizona Senator. His 20-year-old chemical habits — which he admitted a decade ago — have been brought up repeatedly. He’s been called a muslim, a terrorist, a Maoist, a communist and a Nazi — often on this blog. His patriotism has been questioned because he didn’t wear appropriate jewelry. He’s been called uppity, a celebrity, a lightweight. His ex-pastor has been used to paint him as some sort of Malcom X mates with Angela Davis — people seriously think that his followers are contemplating armed insurrection.
Well, it all comes with the territory. If Palin (as with Oboma) didn’t expect this, she’s not smart enough to be Vice President. Who’s treating her like a fragile little girl, now? You. A bit sexist, I’d say.
The process isn’t necessarily fair or right or gentle or nice, but it’s the same for everyone, on both sides.
Either Governor Palin is as tough and smart as you say she is, and she can handle it without you playing the gender card, or she’s not and she should bail now.
Unlike caribou, the media is a carnivorous beast.

Michelle’s four stages of discrediting conservative women reminds me of the first weeks in a military boot camp. You must demonize the opposition in war. A soldier needs to react on impulse when body parts are flying around you. There is no place for this desensitizing in civil discourse. The left and right should be ashamed if they participate in this type of politics.

By who? The only people who are willing to look into these legitimate issues are people in alternative media, not the MSM. Take a look at what’s been going on with Sarah Palin the last few days and I dare you to come up with something as sickening and shameful as the treatment she has had. And guess what? I think she’s going to handle herself with grace, despite all of it.
Not because of not wearing the flag pin, but because of what he said the reason was he didn’t wear it.
No one here has claimed Sarah Palin is not capable of handling this, in fact, many of us claim the exact opposite.
